PC Halo details surface
Gamespot has put up the most comprehensive information about PC Halo to date. Highlights:

  • Solo campaign won't change
  • Project is "40 percent done"
  • Minimum graphics card to be supported - GeForce2 MX
  • Multiplayer will have all new maps, up to 32 players per server
  • Unlikely to see play between PC and Xbox
  • Difficulties will be tweaked (read: increased) to compensate for mouse/keyboard

There's tons of good info in here - go read it for yourself. Thanks to all the folks who let us know, either via email or on the forum, about this article (looks like Parias was first). (Louis Wu 06:19:14 UTC)

Gamers.com previews Halo 2
Gamers.com has put up a Halo 2 preview. It's a word-for-word reprint of the 2-page spread that came out in the Winter 2002 issue of Xbox Nation magazine (we won't be able to bring that to you until January 21, when this issue is no longer on the stands), and most of the information has been seen before... but there are a couple of interesting tidbits. It states (rather than suggests, as other previews have done) that the Master Chief will be visiting another Halo... and it mentions an overhaul of the Human pistol. Go read it! Thanks to Andrew Katz for the heads-up. (Louis Wu 01:49:07 UTC)

Halo audio discussion at Music4Games.net
Music4Games.net has put up a discussion between Marty O'Donnell and Aaron Marks, a freelance composer/sound designer and author of 'The Complete Guide to Game Audio', about the use of audio in Halo and Halo 2. A snippet, Marty discussing how he managed the job for Halo:

Part of my ability to manage the whole thing came because I had no other project to work on. Until Halo, I had been running my own business and had other clients and projects. With Halo, I thought of nothing else, probably almost to the point of obsession (I'm getting help, don't worry). But this enabled me to pay attention to every detail of implementing audio. Jay Weinland, my right hand man here at Bungie, and I shared the same vision for Halo's audio and it was a relief to know that someone else was being as compulsive as me.

A pretty good discussion... go read the rest! (Louis Wu 18:23:26 UTC)

Boatloads of words
Six pieces of Fan Fiction for you today, three from new authors:

The Fan Fiction section has been enhanced a bit - there is still a limit as to how big a story can be and fit into the database... but it will only appear once in the story listing. (Immediate impetus was Andrew Golightly's 130k story, but this has been on the to-do list for quite some time.) Go read! (Louis Wu 17:06:14 UTC)

FF Activity
Some Fan Fiction material for you... Lord Dagon has turned in part 5 of his Halo 2: Return of Death series, and hipboyscott has turned in a sketch of the rifle from his Have Design, Will Build series. He says this:

the rifle design is my own, and this is a basic render. I had more in depth drawings, but they were deleted in the thunderstorm that half-fried my hard drive. If I ever can replecate them, I will turn them in. This is basically to add depth to my story, by showing what the new thing looks like.

This is actually a model with an integrated Grenade Launcher which WILL make an appearance. however the one desribed so far lacks this explosive feature.

Go read and look! (This will be the last post for a while... headed up to Thanks-Killing for the day.) (Louis Wu 15:59:11 UTC)

Jaime Griesemer talks to CVG
Computer and Video Games has interviewed Jaime Griesemer, Halo 2 Lead Designer... and there's some good info to be had.

CVG:Something that really impressed about Halo was the non-player AI, especially that of the marine allies. What sort of improvements are you making in this area for Halo 2?

Griesemer: In Halo the AI was only concerned with shooting and not being shot. In Halo 2 the AI will have a much greater awareness of their environment. They will be able to adapt to it, and more importantly, they will be able to actively manipulate the environment to serve their ends. They'll knock over objects to create cover, they'll climb walls and leap between floors to get into a better position, they'll even destroy the cover the player is hiding behind to force him into the open.

Go read the rest (including another variation of the 'bacon' quote) at CVG! (Thanks to Harry Al-Shakarchi for the heads-up.) (Louis Wu 17:52:38 UTC)

All audio more better
As a followup to last week's 'Making of the Halo Trailer, Part 1', Bungie has posted 'Part 2' at their Tru7h and Reconciliation site. It's a pretty amazing read, if you've ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes, soundwise. Beyond the electronic magic, there were 35 live musicians involved in what you hear, including Jay Weinland playing oboe and english horn, and Marty O'Donnell and his wife joining 12 others for the choir singing. Go read it - and then see if you can find a Dolby 5.1 version of the trailer that works for you. (Louis Wu 09:36:53 UTC)

Lanfest writeup

Marathon/Halo connections
There's a new article over at Bungie's Tru7h and Reconciliation site today, which focuses on the ties between Marathon and Halo. Are any questions answered? No, not really. It's a good overview for those who don't know much about Marathon... but the Bungie skill of saying a lot without saying anything is very much in evidence here. Oh, yeah, and go read what Hamish Sinclair had to say about it, over at the Marathon's Story page... Thanks to mnemesis for the heads-up - though I should have seen it myself on the Story page... shame, shame... (Louis Wu 19:24:01 UTC)

Again, with the schmatte
Macgamer.com has put up an interview with Peter Tamte, of Destineer Studios... and while this shouldn't even need to be said, it does:

One thing which Mac Halo naysayers tend to focus on is, even though Bungie has stated repeatedly that Halo will come to Mac, Microsoft pulls the financial strings (suggesting that it's not for Bungie to say one way or another if a Mac version can or will get made). When you say that you "know this to be true" about Halo for Mac, is this because of Bungie's assertion of it or because Microsoft has been clear with you about it? Or something else?

Anybody who has asserted that Microsoft will prevent Halo from shipping on the Macintosh is not well informed. Making Halo available for Macintosh is a promise that was made by Ed Fries, the VP who manages all of Microsoft's games software, on stage with Steve Jobs at Macworld Expo.

This, of course, won't actually make a difference with the hardcore doubters... but hey, we don't have a copy of PC Halo to rub their noses in yet, so this'll have to do. Go read the rest of the interview - it's good to hear what Tamte's got going! (Louis Wu 18:32:29 UTC)
