Four - eep, three new goodies from Hawty McBloggy
Hawty McBloggy's been busy lately - swing by her digs for speculation on E3 announcements from Bungie next week, a heads-up on a pretty spectacular mini-weapon you can buy with a custom LEGO figure, and a discussion about Halo 3's call signs. What are you waiting for? Go read! (She counts better than me.) (Louis Wu 20:09:07 UTC)

The Man With The Iron Skull: Part One
Narcogen has posted a new article - this one focuses on the Iron Skull, and how it affects gameplay. It's an interesting collection of observations and comments - it's made me look more closely at my playing style on Campaign levels. (Although we came close, we (the Halo community) didn't hit that magical 7 billion number by yesterday - as of this moment, there are still more than 46 million kills required, which will likely take the rest of the week. My taste for Campaign play has been rejuvenated, however, and Narc's comments about the Iron Skull have made me curious; it's just a matter of finding the time to jump back in.) This article only makes it through Crow's Nest - he's got a ways yet. Go read what he has to say in Part One - and add your own thoughts! (Louis Wu 17:12:48 UTC)

Bungie Day. It's Coming.
A full day and a half ahead of schedule, the July 4th edition of the Bungie Weekly Update is online - and trust me, you want to read it. It starts off with some warnings for folks abusing the Halo 3 File Share feature, and reminds us that the deadline for the 7 billion by the 7th challenge is fast approaching... and then moves into Goodies territory. New podcast is coming next week. Cold Storage is coming next week, and it's gonna be free. Gamerpics are coming next week. A new playlist is coming next week. And there's STILL more. Go read it - either at Bungie.net, or in our Weekly Update Archive. (Louis Wu 17:06:20 UTC)

The Architecture of War II: Sandbox
Ascendant Justice has posted a new analysis piece - this one is called 'Sandbox' (there are two parts), and it looks at the goodies (weapons, equipment, etc) we're given to play with in the Halo series. How do the toys we're handed help feed our enjoyment, and how has the series evolved since Halo was released in 2001? Interesting questions, and intriguing answers from vociferous. This is Part II of the Architecture of War series (The Environment was Part 1), and it leaves Part III (Enemies) yet to come. Go read! Thanks, mendicantbias00. (Louis Wu 12:46:46 UTC)

The Battle Rifle, Cold Storage, and More
Last night, Bungie posted their Weekly Update (available, as always, in our Weekly Update Archive in addition to Bungie.net), and it contains a monster writeup of the Halo 3 Battle Rifle, and how it was designed to work. (This week saw a lot of discussion around the net about how the battle rifle is 'broken' - its bullet spread is too random at long range for many hardcore users. The explanation in the WU makes it clear that this is by design - and only affects the weapon at long range. Bungie wanted the BR to be used primarily as a mid-range weapon, with long-range tasks (like pinging a sniper to pull him out of scope, or finishing off an unshielded target), but without the ability to be used as a universal "I can kill anything on the map with this puppy, regardless of location" tool.) Past this very detailed writeup, there's also information about the San Diego Comic Convention, mention of a couple of dates to keep track of, and a couple of gorgeous screenshots of Cold Storage (nee Chill Out). Large versions of the Cold Storage shots are available in Bungie's Screenshot Gallery. Go read! It's a good 'un. (Louis Wu 10:38:03 UTC)

Solo, Legendary, All Skulls On. Yeah, Baby.
Wow. NOKYARD sent word that Pahis (Pahat Pojat) has done some amazing Campaign work - first up, he beat the Million Point Challenge using just three levels; The Ark (443,175), The Covenant (415,230), and Cortana (168,075). (This blows away the first instance of that challenge being beaten, back in October - that one needed six levels.) Go read the news post at High Speed Halo for download links (or grab the runs themselves from Pahis' FileShare). That October news post, with the challenge getting beaten the first time? I asked if anyone wanted to try for two million points - Pahis has done that, with a combined total of 2,243,974 points for all nine levels. These runs are done Solo, Legendary, All Skulls On - as of May 2, only two people had completed the game in this mode. According to NOKYARD, he holds the High Score record for all Campaign missions, the SLASO record for each mission, and has completed the entire game in SLASO style in 4:13:22 (though not in a single sitting). Insanity. Go watch some of it. (Louis Wu 18:50:27 UTC)

Bungie Weekly Update - Short and Sweet
Last night's Bungie Weekly Update (viewable, as usual, either on Bungie.net or in our Weekly Update Archive) was pretty simple - Luke and Shishka are off in San Diego for MLG's tourney there - it covered banning fun, some cool user-created content, a hint about late summer, and a warning about Big Team Battle.
