Halo Wars Update - a little late
Bah. Michael Smith let us know several days ago that the Halo Wars crew had posted a new Update on Halloween. It even included a link to a video at a local TV station, where they were featured. Unfortunately, I totally spaced on posting it... and when Trindacut reminded me of it this morning, it was already too late for the video - the station has moved on, and is no longer serving it. Go read the update anyway, though; you can see what Ensemble's latest ideas are for improving the gameplay of the upcoming release. (Louis Wu 12:56:15 UTC)

UK tourney in two weeks
MatchBox360 is hosting the MatchBox360 XL Tournament in Birmingham, England, on November 17 and 18 - and it looks like XLEAGUE.TV has just signed on as a sponsor. (I can't link to the actual article, because the whole front page of MatchBox360 is javascript-driven, but it's currently the top article.) The event will be filmed, and they've tossed in £1000 for a Halo 3 FFA tourney, as well. Go read more at MatchBox360 (Louis Wu 18:07:53 UTC)

Gaming4Others raises money for sick kids
Awesomesauce. kilaMOMjaro let us know about the Gaming4Others charity tournament - money raised will go to Child's Play, a charity set up by Penny Arcade a few years ago to bring video games, toys, and movies to sick kids. They're running two ladders - one for GRAW2, the other for Halo 3. It's a 4v4 tourney, but teams can have 5 people on them. Registration is $50/team, and the top team in each game will go home with 5 1-year Xbox Live subscriptions. Go read more on the G4O website... you've got until November 10 to register! Even if you don't want to play, you can still sponsor a team, or simply make a donation directly to Child's Play. (Visit the Donations link on the G4O website.) (Louis Wu 11:17:27 UTC)

Naughty and Nice. (Mostly Nice.)
Last night's Bungie Weekly Update was a pretty cool shout-out from a bunch of Bungie employees to the people (family and friends and fans) who made it worthwhile for them. (There's also a mysterious warning to folks doing something they shouldn't be doing.) Go read! Roflsalad was first. (As always, it's archived in the Weekly Update Archive as well.) Halo 3's Saved Films/AI Behavior - an Interview
Saved Films functionality is a HUGE part of the wonder that is Halo 3; it lets you relive spectacular moments, it let's you figure out exactly HOW you died (and which walls that bullet ricocheted off before it went through your skull), it lets you create gorgeous machinima with a minimum of setup. In order for it to work, though, Bungie's gameplay has to be incredibly predictable... and if it's incredibly predictable, how can it be fun? The answer to this question, and questions like it, require an understanding of how the Saved Film system works - and how Bungie's AI works. So we went to Max Dyckhoff, one of Bungie's AI engineers, to get the skinny. This ain't an interview for people who just want to play the game - this is for people who want to understand how it WORKS. Go read what he told us. (Louis Wu 00:26:00 UTC)
