X-Day at IGN
Wow. Yesterday was X-Day. Microsoft stopped by the offices of IGN as well as Gamespot...and not one, but four IGN staff writers wrote up their impressions. Attitudes can be summed up in one word - awed. Lots and lots of spoilers here... but lots and lots of info for those starved for Halo details. Story details, gameplay details... go read it. Wow. (Thanks to CrimsonT for the heads-up in our forum.) (Louis Wu 11:09:22 UTC)

New Halo Preview at Gamespot
Woohoo! Fuolornis Fire Dragon points out a new Halo preview at Gamespot... and it's a doozy! Seems they spent a goodly chunk of time playing... and have revealed a couple of previously unknown facts. (Folks who don't like any spoilers at all should stop reading now.) One interesting tidbit: after you leave the Pillar of Autumn,

It's up to you to escape with the ship's AI, which is saved conveniently onto a credit card-sized device.

That's a nice way to explain why YOU have access to Cortana, but the rest of the fighters don't... There's quite a bit more, so go read it for yourself. (Or don't, if you want the whole thing to be a surprise on November 8.) (Louis Wu 01:51:48 UTC)

Halo Developer Diary, Part Three
PlanetXbox has put up part three of its Halo Developer Diary series (part one and part two were mentioned earlier), an interview series with Jaime Griesemer about the process Halo is going through on its way to release. This installment is a fascinating look at interactive scripting, and shows how Bungie's working on getting you to forget you're playing a game:

The communication system constantly monitors the game, looking for any of the dozens of hooks it can use to call combat dialog. Just to give you an idea of the complexity of the system, it knows who damaged who, what their respective races were, what weapon was used, how bad the damage was, and what the other characters in the encounter were doing when the damage was dealt, and it can call different lines of combat dialog based on all of these parameters. This means we can have someone say "Eat lead" and be sure he's not firing a flame-thrower. Sometimes they even laugh at each other's jokes or comment on something somebody else said in the heat of battle. This gives our characters real personality and believability.

There's also a little snippet that answers a longstanding question:

The entire first level revolves around the defense and eventual abandonment of the Pillar of Autumn...

It's been speculated that we'd see the PoA only in a cutscene at the start of the game; when the Halo Updates started mentioning some modeling of the ship itself, folks wondered if that meant it would be a battleground instead of a movie - this seems to confirm that it will be. Go read the whole thing - it made me tingle. (Louis Wu 12:27:57 UTC)

Better Gaming Through Physics
This week's Halo Update is here - and while it's mostly bugfixes and tweaks, there's a bit of provocative stuff in there. What's green and gooey and eats through the ground? (Happy Birthday, Other Mehve!) Go read all the goodness for yourself - it'll be in the Halo Update Database in a few minutes. (Louis Wu 02:15:21 UTC)

FAQ updated - GO READ IT
Mark Levin, walking repository of Halo knowledge (and other infectious stuff), dropped a note on our forum to let folks know that he's updated the HBO FAQ. Always nice when we're up-to-date! Thanks, Mark. (Louis Wu 00:32:31 UTC)

Bob's Big Date

It was all over in a moment. The sharp pain he felt in his chest and neck turned to dull warmth as it tore him to the ground, ripping limb from limb, guzzling his intestines and other organs.

Poor Bob. This guy needs a smiley-face sticker, don't you think? Go read Chapter 3 of Hermes Trismegistus, over in our Fan Fiction section. (Louis Wu 20:18:17 UTC)

Bottomless Clips and the Money Shot...
This week's Halo update is over at Rampancy.net... thanks to Acrappa for getting it up in the face of adversity. The Mighty Chris Butcher is mighty no longer... but Chucky just got Swarthy. (Yo-ho-ho...) A new name pops up - Eric Arroyo. And the shotgun gets bigger... go read all the groovy details for yourself. (Louis Wu 02:05:08 UTC)

Ed Fries interview at TeamXBOX
Thanks to Char, who pointed out an interview with Microsoft's Ed Fries over at TeamXbox.com. It's a pretty interesting read, full of enthusiasm about the future (what a surprise, eh?). When asked how Microsoft is helping developers get the most out of the Xbox, Fries pointed out that

We have strong internal development teams with great programmers who know every Xbox trick and we send them out to help our partners. People like Jason Jones, lead programmer for Halo, have had a huge influence on many other games in development.

(This is one of the reasons Jason cited when asked why he wanted to work on the Xbox - the opportunity to shape the console.) Another interesting tidbit:

Almost all of our TV advertising will be devoted to specific games, not generically to the platform. I got to see a very early version of a Halo TV commercial the other day and even in its rough form it totally rocked. It was 95% footage from the actual game and it looked great.

Go read the rest of it - there are some choice nuggets in there. (Louis Wu 19:26:41 UTC)

Halo a runner-up, says Gamespot
Gamespot has put up their 'Top Games of E3 2001'... and Halo takes runner-up in the Xbox category to Gun Valkyrie, an action-shooter from Smilebit. Gamespot was clear:

Halo's one-player mission was engaging and challenging, but the slowdown in the four-player split-screen mode was unavoidably visible.

They have not, however, lost hope:

While the framerate in multiplayer was a little rough, we expect that Halo will clean up nicely by the time it's released this November.

Go read the whole thing! (Poking around on Gamespot's site also pointed out this E3 2001 Preshow Hands-on that we seem to have missed from last week... they're pretty psyched about the AI. Check it out.) (Louis Wu 02:13:20 UTC)

The start of a new fan fiction
Well, almost buried in the 100-odd posts of the most amusing flamewar to happen on our forum in a long time, Anonymous Coward has posted the first four paragraphs of what he calls 'Work in progress...'. I'm gonna hold off adding it immediately to the Fan Fiction section, in the hopes that he'll add to it first - but it's a pretty nice start, go read it! (Louis Wu 01:22:58 UTC)

New (sorta) fan fiction available
Early last week, we got a Fan Fiction submission with a subject line of 'stupid fanfic I wrote'. Wirehead figured, if the AUTHOR thinks it's stupid, how good could it be? It got resubmitted a couple of days ago, with an altered subject line, and I found it this morning. Moral of the story - don't tell us your work sucks - we'll believe you. :) That said, go read our latest Fan Fiction, 'Ambush!'. (Louis Wu 13:27:11 UTC)

Matt's Weekly Update posted
Thanks to Matt Soell, who didn't hold our feet to the fire TOO long for Marty's update last week - he sent us this week's update as scheduled. And it's a tasty one. So tasty, in fact, that I logged in from a place where I have to PAY by the minute for my internet access to bring it to you. (Yeah, yeah, you Brits, stop your whining.) Crux would have posted it, but he was eating fish, or something. In any case, go read about a model for Cortana, a whole bunch of stuff that brings on Marathon flashbacks, better AI, and more multiplayer art. What are you waiting for? This is costing me! (It'll make it into the Halo Update Database in the next day or two.) (Louis Wu 03:53:51 UTC)

Halo Preview at Gamecritics.com
Gamecritics.com has put put up a Halo preview that's worth reading. There's one new screenshot (pretty nice, though unfortunately small), and a reasonbly good analysis of the current position of Halo. There a couple of notable problems with the review, however, which make you wonder... for example, on Page 4, there's this passage:

It's also worth mentioning that many of the weapons won't actually look like guns. As a Microsoft rep has said, "In order to be sensitive to the needs of the mainstream consumer market and curb recent trends towards violence."

Readers with good memories will recognize this information as coming from R.net's April Fools Day post... if the author was taken in by THIS info, what ELSE is wrong? Go read it and decide for yourself. Update: d-trexx writes to say that our 'new screenshot' isn't new at all - PlanetXbox has had it in their archives since Gamestock. Guess we just missed it... Update 2: DOH! It's been in OUR screenshots section since March 20 - I put it there myself! It came from Bungie's new Halo site. I gotta stop using those aluminum pots to cook my tomato sauce in... Halo Update posted at Haloplayers
Matt's Halo Update went to Haloplayers this time around - go read it. The AI can now determine the differences between types of fire, and act accordingly. The Multiplayer design doc has grown. There's a Covenant dropship. And Capture the Flag is working well. Mmmm... (Louis Wu 00:18:12 UTC)

There IS a PC version, Virginia
We've received a bunch of mail today from folks who got email notification from EB World that the PC version of Halo was cancelled, and they could have their deposit back. Nick also posted a note to our forum about this issue. Matt Soell has once again jumped into the breach, and offered some words of encouragement:

The "PC Halo is cancelled, we have reliable information from inside Bungie/MS, let's all freak out now" story is still bogus. It was bogus a couple weeks ago, and the time before that, and so on. The next time it pops up, it will still be bogus.

Can't make it any plainer than that, folks... go read the rest of Matt's post for a few chuckles. (Louis Wu 20:01:02 UTC)

Gamestock impressions from PlanetXbox
Gawd... the every-day-checking of the PlanetXbox site for their promised hands-on report has finally paid off! There's some good discussion about the ease of transition to a console controller (they liked it), and a nice description of the mission itself... but the little tidbit that stood out for me was their description of the Halo as

...a giant world that, as Jones explained, spans over 10,000 kilometers in diameter.

A bit over a year ago, Matt Soell, in answer to a direct question about the size of the Halo, sent this:

I got an answer of sorts to the miles/kilometers question. Turns out that none of the figures discussed so far are accurate. Jason claims to not know where the 10,000 figure came from, as he's still doing the math.

If PlanetXbox's comment is literally true, it seems Jones has settled on the figure after all... Go read the whole thing for yourself! (Louis Wu 10:06:08 UTC)

Weekly Halo Update Goodness
Matt's weekly Halo Update can be found at Rampancy.net this week - as though we didn't have some idea already how Halo was doing. :) We got names for "here are two people working FULL-TIME on multiplayer" mentioned in the Q&A yesterday - Hardy and Michael - presumably Lebel and Evans, two big names from the Oni team... and we got teasers like this:

Marcus got the lovely gorgeous waterfalls working again and placed a couple of them on the first mission you play after you land on Halo. Of course that will be at dusk and you might be distracted by the enormous structures firing huge bolts of plasma over to the other side of the ring.

Goodness, if that doesn't pique your interest, you should head over to the Tribes 2 sites, or something. Thanks, Matt! Go read the goodness for yourself. (Louis Wu 01:58:07 UTC)

Jason Jones Interview at GSUK
Wow. Gamespot UK scored an exclusive interview with Jason Jones this week... there's a lot of good stuff in there.

GSUK: How has Halo's focus changed since last E3?

JJ: For a long time we were very focused on a very cinematic third-person network experience on the PC though some people might say those words are mutually exclusive. What we boiled it down to sometime after last E3 was a much more first-person experience because we're primarily interested in the action and a little bit less in the cinema. We've really got down to work on the AI, not only how you'd play against it, but how it would assist you too. Like it's really fun to drive around with that guy who just hoses people with the chain gun.

Go read the whole thing - it'll make you happy. (Thanks to Laura Stobart of Gamespot UK and to Massa, of Halo Network, for the heads-up.) (Louis Wu 12:53:33 UTC)

Another first-person account
Thanks to Char (IMG), who noted on the R.net forum that this thread in the ign.com forum contains another hands-on review of Halo, from a Team 17 member who was at Gamestock. His final summary:

he Conclusion: Everything I thought it would be, and more! It was so visually stunning on the Xbox. The jeep, the player, the aliens, down to the waves, all of it was so jawdropping. I was impressed to say the least.

Questions Answered: The presentation briefly discussed Halo singleplayer and the online features of the game. This should clear up anything with this strange rumor saying that there is no multiplayer. They also mentioned the split screen coop and deathmatch modes if it's just you and your friends.

Good news, that! Go read the rest - there's more in his post, and more in the thread, about controller use, among other things. (Louis Wu 02:18:41 UTC)

Hi-res shots, preview at DR
Wow. Daily Radar has the shots, as well... but they're HUGE. 1920x1440 pixels. You want Hi-res, you got hi-res!!! The preview they go with is worth a read, too...

The gameplay seems to be developing as quickly as the graphic improvements. The world is now populated with an interesting and imaginative assortment of alien varmints, many bent on your destruction. The single-player game is awe-inspiring, taking you all around the gigantic artificial ring-shaped world on a quest to defeat an alien race known as The Covenant. You'll engage them in straight-out blasting duels, attack Metal Gear-style in complete stealth, or even commandeer heavily armed vehicles to launch more destructive attacks (those vehicle modes switch to a third-person view).

Go read about it! (Louis Wu 21:17:01 UTC)
