Rifle-butting the aliens
Thanks to Zypper, who pointed out that this week's Halo Update is over at Haloplayers... and it sounds like they might just be ready for Gamestock. New music (this might be the bestest part), better AI, and lots of gameplay tweaks. Go read it for yourself... and brace for Monday/Tuesday's impact! (Louis Wu 02:27:50 UTC)

super-hi-res screenshots... mmmm.
Snow in Seattle didn't stop Matt from sending a seriously meaty Halo Update to the good folks of Rampancy.net... though it did make him rant a bit about SUV-driving wusses. Almost every point is tasty... but the two that got me were

  • The chain gun for the Jeep is now fully textured. Rob is working on a new gun intended for "fodder-type" opponents; the geometry is almost done and texturing should be another couple of days.
  • The script for Halo's single-player campaign is about 30% done. (Don't confuse this with the story itself, which is more-or-less finished at this point, and should completely satisfy those of you who like Bungie games for the story.)

Good story... that's key. What I REALLY want to know, though, is... what's a "fodder-type" opponent? And can I make my friends play as them in netgames? Go read all the details for yourself! (Louis Wu 02:08:26 UTC)

I'm too sexy for the breakers
Matt's weekly Halo Update went to Battleground Halo this week... and it's full of progress reports. A dev kit upgrade, controller issues, particle effects, cool new map editor features... and waves! We want to see waves (though we don't want to be close to Joe Staten when we see them...) Go read the details over at BGH! (This update will be added to our searcheable database sometime on Monday.) Indoor vehicles!
Matt's weekly Halo update is back up and running, and it's over at Rampancy.net tonight. Alien unit variations (we wanna see that energy shield!), indoor vehicles (jeeps on stairs? The mind boggles), and THE HALO TEAM WON THE PENTATHLON! Go Halo! Go read the gory details for yourselves. (Louis Wu 03:45:43 UTC)

First fanfest reports come in
Thanks to Appleicious, who posted a Fanfest report to our forum. Halo details included:

  • In [the] keynote, we got to see about ten exclusivescreenshots from the "old" Halo engine (exclusive = never before seen).
  • the Halo multiplayer design doc is almost finished and work on the network code will begin in February.

There's lots more, so read the whole thing for yourselves! Also, codetoad posted another report over at R.net, with these tantalizing tidbits:

  • there's 3 weapons finalized in halo
  • there will be a "halo invasion of the media" (due to MS money) very soon, and we won't have to worry about getting info on halo, because it will be ALL AROUND us. (Could this mean perhaps there is truth to the superbowl wild rumor? :-P)

Again, there is much more to that report, as well. As mentioned in both, Phoenix was officially announced... though there isn't much info about it yet, and won't be for a while. Ack. Why are you reading this? Go read those reports! (Louis Wu 11:09:28 UTC)

No Halo update this week or next
No Halo update this week says Matt on our forums. No Halo update next week too. Doesn't look like we'll get one on Friday January 5th either. Matt hints at a possible live Halo update at the Bungie fanfest. Go read his full posthere. (Wirehead 09:46:09 UTC)

XBOX365 gets wind of a leak?
As noted at Haloplayers, XBOX365 has put up a story in which 'Inside Informant' provides details of the finalized Xbox design. Now, take this as you will - read the comments below the story for some, um, alternative views... but one thing is clear to me - in the news post we put up last week, we seriously misinterpreted one of the features of the Xbox - the expansion port devoted to real-time speech has nothing to do with peer-to-peer communication; it will allow the Xbox to accept voice commands from the user. We're back to square one in terms of net communication. Anyway, go read the whole story - true or not, it's entertaining. (Louis Wu 20:15:34 UTC)

Matt's Weekly Halo update, at R.net
Matt continues his 5-week run of Halo updates, this week at Rampancy.net. It's not very long... but it's tantalizing in its implications. Ah, don't take my word for it... go read it for yourself! (Louis Wu 11:32:13 UTC)

Matt's October 27th Halo Update
Good Lord. 4 weeks in a row, Matt Soell's managed to write up weekly progress reports for the Halo team (and the Oni team, we should note, posted over at Oni Central). This one is chock-full of home-cooked goodness - lots and lots and lots of weapons, oodles of net game types, D&D research... the boys have been busy. Hey - the Producer position, open since Nathan left, has been filled! Welcome, Rick Ryan. And we'd be remiss if we didn't wish Alex S. a belated birthday. But enough rambling... go read Matt's words! Xbox news roundup
Slow Halo day... so we'll pass on some interesting Xbox tidbits. J Allard was interviewed over at GameSpot, and had some interesting things to say. Worth a read. (The bit on why they stuck with 'Xbox' is intriguing.) The Xbox specs have been finalized, and you can find them here, also at GameSpot. Sharky Extreme has a great article on nVidia's contribution to the Xbox... if you want your jaw to drop, go read ITS specs. Now go out and enjoy your Friday night! (Louis Wu 01:51:21 UTC)

Does Xbox have what it takes?
R.net has found an Xbox article on the New York Times website. If you don't have a NYT login, read the R.net news post for information on seeing this easily. The Times is a bit pessimistic on the Xbox; they think the console market might not last long enough to keep the Xbox afloat:

Brand and demographics may well conspire against Microsoft. Since July 1998, the penetration of video-game consoles in the nation's homes has begun to decline, to 35 percent from 37 percent.

The reason, according to the San Francisco-based market research firm Odyssey is that the home PC is also increasingly a game machine.

And they also worry that the rate of console speed growth could increase, putting Microsoft (a newcomer with no software titles) at a disadvantage:

While Microsoft will take the performance lead in 2001, it will be with a powerful machine and little software.

Sony could then trump Microsoft with a faster machine in a year or two that could spell trouble for the software publisher: if the video-game business becomes more like the PC hardware industry, Microsoft may find itself locked in a bitter war over profit margins in which it lacks the comfortable software cushion it enjoys in the PC business. Sony has not publicly acknowledged that it plans to speed up the pace but it has quietly sent signals to its developers.

It's almost certainly too soon to really judge the Xbox's chances in this lucrative market... but this article certainly brings up some heretofore unspoken fears. Go read it! (Again, check the R.net news post for instructions about access if you don't already have a login for the NYT site.) (Louis Wu 00:30:09 UTC)

Halo ambient lifeform spotted in PCZone Benelux!
Kudos to D'n'A for posting more info about the Halo preview in the July issue of PCZone Benelux (Dutch gaming mag). It's going to have a monthly Halo diary featuring new and exclusive never-seen-before pictures and interviews with the designers. Here's how D'n'A describes one of the new pics in the article:

There's concept art showing the strange ambient lifeform we saw in the BTV day three movie...the rolling one(maybe it was day four). On it's back there's some sort of jet-engine so it may also be concept are of a still to be shown Covenant race.

Go read the full thing on our forums. Thanks D'n'A. (Ding 15:48:51 UTC)

Quake-oriented Halo report
Kudos to Matt Hilliard for pointing us to a short Halo reportposted by a fan at TeleFragged, a Quake site. We snagged this piece:

The graphics were nothing short of incredible, with immaculate attention to detail, from bump-mapping on the player's suit of armor to little clouds of dust kicked up when he runs. The physics are on par with the best racing simulations -- the ATV bounces and leans just as if it were real. At one point, the Bungie employee accidentally tipped over the vehicle and had to reset it, which shows a greater attention to detail than most racing games which will absolutely prevent a car from flipping.
