HGN Preview - for everybody
The Halo Graphic Novel preview hit comic stores in the US a few days ago (Wednesday was the release date); I hadn't realized this, but it was supposed to be a freebie. My local comic store was charging $.99/copy (not much, but when you want to grab enough for your buddies in Europe...), and comic stores elsewhere were doing similar things. Our policy on scans is that we will not put them up until the magazine they're from is off the shelves - because we're not interested in eating into anyone's legitimate profits. In this case, however, it was supposed to be free to begin with. So we're making it free. The scans aren't super-high-res - but they're big enough to read, and that should be a start, no? Go read. Or download. This stuff rocks. (Louis Wu 21:35:10 UTC)

Tasty Weekly Update
The Weekly Update is up over at Bungie.net, even though they had a major power outage today (probably that enormous bank of cooling fans in the back going rampant) - info about Video Games Live (and PLAY!, a different series altogether, though you wouldn't know it from the way Frankie wrote it up tonight), plus much more about playlist changes, and some really tantalizing stuff about an upcoming documentary short. And a really cool ASCII Mister Chief. Go read! (Or read it in our Weekly Update Archive, where it's actually formatted better. OMG it's update 77!) (Louis Wu 00:16:31 UTC)

BOLLing for soup-erman
Over at Bungie.net, there's a very cool interview with BOLL, a community member who tends to stand out if you pay any attention to community members. Go read about what makes him tick - I apologize that somehow, I can't find an original picture of his elite carving; I remember telling him to mail it to us as an entry for the Pillar of Art contest. (He decided it was too expensive to ship.) And what would a BOLL piece be without a cool Flash tidbit? Go read. Update: Heh - good to know at least ONE person kept that original stuff. Here's a screenshot of Battleground: Halo's front page (they're now HaloPlanet) when BOLL's carving was featured back in 2002, and here are the three cam shots (0902 | 0903 | 0904). Ah, memories... The Last Invitation
I shouldn't have been here THIS long - I've got two different Memorial Day parades to attend - but I wanted to post the next in our series of celebrity One One Se7en strips - this one comes from Gruntsbane, and features the wonderful (and sorely missed) Halo Babies characters. Go read! Then (if you live in the US) get out and appreciate our men and women in uniform. (Louis Wu 14:59:26 UTC)

News Flash - there are at least 10 islands on Earth.
The Weekly Update this week is available at Bungie.net (or in our Weekly Update Archive) - there are some bits about Halo 2 Vista, and some bits about changes to the XBL playlists... and then a bunch of random user-submitted questions (with answers that range from pretty cool to KP-quality). Go read. (Louis Wu 01:18:07 UTC)

That Hand! That's... a Dead Man's Hand!
Dweezle86 dropped by our forum to let us know that there's a bunch of new content at Dead Man's Hand; aside from the article we mentioned a couple of days ago, there are interviews with Damian Lacedaemion of THis Spartan Life and Mintz of Halo: Portable, along with a number of Halo-related (or not related) articles. Go read! (Louis Wu 18:45:41 UTC)

When Art and Business Clash
Over at Rampancy.net, there's a fascinating piece that looks at a new book by Dean Takahashi, entitled "The Xbox 360 Uncloaked: The Real Story Behind Microsoft's Next-Generation Video Game Console", and how that book relates to Bungie, and to the development of Halo 2 and Halo 3. Great excerpts, great analysis. If you've ever been interested in the behind-the-scenes stuff that went into these games, go read. (Remember - this is Takahashi's take on events.) When are you TOO successful?
AJ Ardovino pointed out an article entitled 'The End For All', over at Dead Man's Hand - it asks the question "does Halo's popularity impact the success rate of other games?" Are other XBL games failing because too many people are playing Halo instead of exploring what else is out there? You could also ask "is anyone going to create an online game that makes people want to play it?", I suppose... Go read. (Louis Wu 21:14:30 UTC)

Weekly Fanfic - and an out-of-character rant
Weekly Fanfic update is a couple of days later than usual, due to E3 and some really unpleasant experiences on airplanes - but it's up now. 23 new pieces. Go read. (To the two idiots (you know who you are) who wrote to bitch that it wasn't posted before now - keep a sharp eye on the content you DO submit; there might be some subtle editing in the future. No, not really - I'd never do that - but you guys really are jerks for not even bothering to read the front page to see if there might be a reason the update was delayed. And because of you, i'm instituting a new policy: Fiction updates will continue to be on Friday, unless something comes up that keeps me from being able to post. If the update is NOT on Friday, and someone writes to complain that their piece hasn't been posted, not only will I delete the piece they're asking about, but I'll ban that username from posting to the section again. (This won't keep you from changing your username, but it WILL stop you from continuing any ongoing series.) Seriously - you guys, as a group, are the biggest PITAs I've ever dealt with, anywhere. And that's my rant for today.) (Louis Wu 16:57:58 UTC)

The Trailer, Dissected
One quick last post, before heading off to DeanFest 2006 - the Weekly Update is posted over at Bungie.net, and it's a doozy. It might just contain the most real information about a Bungie product, ever. Amazing collection of solid answers. Go read. (And then stop harping on the silly stuff in our forum, and start speculating about the REAL meat!) As always, it's available in our Bungie Weekly Update Archive, as well. (Louis Wu 23:44:39 UTC)

Shirty.
Who'da thunk it? One One Se7en turned three years old today - nicely timed with the use of artwork on the first HBO shirt. Stuntmutt took advantage of the announcement to show off one of my favorite shirt designs (that we passed on, because it required more colors than we could afford) in a special Sunday Strip. He also wrote up a blog entry which mentions the shirt (along with a TON of other related stuff) - definitely worth a read. Go read, go laugh, go buy a shirt. (Louis Wu 17:08:57 UTC)

WHAT? HBO has a SHIRT?
There were those that said this day would never come... I was one of 'em. But times change, and opportunities arise, and if you're really, really lucky, you can grab 'em as they're going by. That's true for us... and it's true for you. (Wait - what's he talking about?) I'll tell you what I'm talking about. HBO got together with some of its favorite artists, and put together some amazingly cool stuff for you. We have some totally unique posters that you can't buy - but you can win. We also have a spectacular new t-shirt, thanks to our friends at splode, that you can't win, but you can buy. In fact - if you want a shot at the posters - you HAVE to buy! Go read all the details on our E3 Goodies page. (There's also an opportunity to get invited to the infamous DeanFest (I'm not sure it has a real name yet this year, but search our news for 'Plasma Fiesta' for reports of last year's version) - you have to be in the LA area for this one, but a raffle for this, too, is available to all shirt buyers.) Before I crash into bed for the night, I'd like to send out a HUGE round of thanks to all the folks who made this possible - the artists, Dustin at splode, and Miguel Chavez, the Peruvian version of the Tasmanian Devil, without whose energy none of this would have happened. Enough blathering. Go check out the cool artwork, go buy a shirt, go register for cool stuff. We love ya. (Louis Wu 07:18:38 UTC)

Swollen Internets
The Weekly Update is available now at Bungie.net (thanks, Frankie) - and the best news of all is that there won't be any more Pimps at Sea fakery after this! No, actually, the best news of all is that they're making an Excel spreadsheet with all the game variants in use on XBL available - go grab it! There's also some great new schwag at the Bungie Store, a HINT of movie news, and a nice Mister Chief sketch. Go read. (As usual, you can choose to read it here at HBO, in our Weekly Update Archive.) Telling Stories through Games
Roger Wilco noticed a great article at Gamasutra, discussing storytelling and game design (and how they're inter-related). Halo 2 is held up as a 'mixed success' - some of the storytelling is done in-game, but some of it is done via 'agency-violating cutscenes'. Go read! (Louis Wu 13:44:30 UTC)
