Shikai Wang Interviewed.
A week ago, Bungie artist Shikai Wang was interviewed by the Australian official Xbox site - it's got some nice background info on Bungie's interviewing process, and a look at what was needed, artwise, to get Halo out the door. Check it out! (Thanks to Benjamin Swinbanks for the heads-up on this one.) We've added this (and yesterday's Chris Carney interview) to the Interviews database. (Louis Wu 10:53:27 UTC)

You've got questions? We've got answers.
In response to a slew of questions sent to us (and asked on our forum) about the Pillar of Art contest, we've added a Frequently Asked Questions section. Check it out, and don't hesitate to send us mail if your question isn't answered. We've also reduced the maximum size of paintings to 5' x 6' - still rather large, but not the enormous 10' x 12' we'd originally listed. Apologies if this confounds anyone's plans. Goin' on Safari
Early adopters of Apple's new Safari browser have discovered that they can't view spoiler-laden posts on this site, because Safari won't save the cookie that allows access. Steve Rice, a kind reader, has sent in a fix. Check it out. (Louis Wu 14:16:51 UTC)

50 States, 50 Chapters - redux
In early December, emildux posted some information about an effort to pick the top 50 chapters in the US (one per state). Today, he points out that this list has been overhauled... he's keeping up on activity (the HBO Junkies lost our spot in Connecticut because we haven't been doing anything), so if you're looking for active chapters in your state, this is a great place to start. Check it out! (Louis Wu 13:23:15 UTC)

Hedge Interviews Marty O'Donnell
About a month ago, Hedgemony, a forum regular (absent now for a few weeks), was in the middle of a project to catalog all the dialog in Halo. He wished out loud that he could ask Marty O'Donnell all sorts of questions about the sound in Halo... well, Marty's a pretty good guy. Hedge wrote up the questions, Marty answered 'em. It wasn't overnight, but then, it was the holiday season... In any case, the interview is now available for the public. I've been unable to reach Hedge to let him know about it, but I have no doubt he'll be back online at some point to check it out for himself. If you have any interest in some of the background issues in the Halo aural scene, read this interview! (It's far more of a 'how does this work?' interview than a background 'who are you, and why do you work for Bungie?' interview.) (Louis Wu 04:16:50 UTC)

Halo Soundtrack Remix, from the Netherlands
Nadorst points out that there's a Halo remix on the Dutch Xbox site Xboxworld.nl that we've never mentioned before. It's pretty powerful - and rather nicely done. I don't read Dutch, and there doesn't seem to be any way to contact the creator of the piece... but you can download it from Xboxworld.nl either at the above link, or directly from the download page. It's 3.9 mb, in zipped mp3 format. Check it out! (Louis Wu 21:22:31 UTC)

Bonk comes back from a pretty long absence with a new cutscene blooper vid; 10.5 mb, 2 and a half minutes, in QuickTime 5 format. Messin' with the Master Chief in the Shafted cutscene... to see what you can do with Bungie's prescripted stuff, go check it out at iBonk.com! (Louis Wu 05:09:00 UTC)

Of Men and Machines
Whoa, interesting. Mark Levin has whipped up a Circular Room Grand Tour with pictures and commentary about the indoor portions of Assault on the Control Room. This is the first really intense look at the possible meanings behind the structures on Halo... and there are some interesting speculations. Check it out! (Louis Wu 04:34:17 UTC)

There was a fourth. You couldn't have known.
While it's true that the Tricks queue has languished for months and its maintainer should be taken out and summarily shot, folks are still discovering cool stuff about Halo. Case in point: Finn, stalwart Halo Story page pillar, has discovered an unexplored area in Halo; a fourth Pulse Generator on Two Betrayals. It's not fully operational... but the architecture is complete. Some of the areas are spooky in their darkened state. Check it out on Team 7hr33's website! (Louis Wu 03:22:22 UTC)

Halo and Marathon... again
Game Girl Advance has posted an article called 'Halo: Original Game, or Sequel?' While we strongly disagree with the conclusions drawn in the article (we - the staff of HBO, not just me), I'm quite pleased they were able to find the info they needed so easily. (The screenshot of Keyes was taken from a pre-release movie put out by Gamespot in October, 2001.) Check it out! (Louis Wu 00:12:01 UTC)

Have you got a savage breast?
Back in August, Silverbrin turned in a piece of music called 'Mahdrigalo'. It was well-received... but SB has built on it.

A few months ago I uploaded a piece of fan music called "Mahdrigalo". It was a combination of the Halo gregorian chant with the Siege of Madrigal. Both (in my opinion) are some of Marty's best works. Both songs are also on the Halo soundtrack. After releasing the somewhat crude midi, I got a surprising amount of requests to rework the piece into a more high quality audio effort. Months passed and I came to own some new software. I decided to start from scratch and bring the old piece to life through more powerful software; the way it was meant to be heard. After a a few days of tinkering I was able to recreate the original Mahdrigalo and maintain a duel Myth/Halo aura. The main differences between this sequal and the original include a much higher quality of audio and a new ending. I hope you enjoy Mahdrigalo2.mp3.

From where I sit, it's definitely a more polished piece of work... check it out, it weighs in at 4.8 mb. (It's currently hosted here, but if bandwidth issues get in the way (and we'll only know if you tell us), we'll move it to another server.) (Louis Wu 14:45:44 UTC)

Whoa. The Gameplay Tips section, somewhat neglected in recent weeks, has had a facelift. 40+ new tips, plus (some much-needed) sorting functions! The site map has been updated, as well. As far as I can tell, Cybrfrk has left out some of the SupaMegaTricksta-type tips that we get... which is a fine thing, SMT is in a class by himself. Go check it out, and improve your gameplay today!
