You had something they didn't.
Heh - here's an interesting use of Halo 3 audio, in a trailer for a new video series honoring Kobe Bryant. Thanks, LD2k. (Louis Wu 14:49:19 UTC)

Atari Modern Classics
Heh - gunluva noticed (via Kotaku) a feature on The -Minus World that's funny, and has Halo content to boot; what more could you want? (Me, I wanna play that version of Bioshock.) (Louis Wu 20:35:27 UTC)

Halo = Video Game
SnowJP 360 noticed a minifeature on CNN that looked at what life might be like in 2020... and the slide that discusses virtual gaming uses a Halo graphic for display purposes. Heh - CNN has a lot of faith in the Halo franchise! (Louis Wu 12:43:31 UTC)

Breaking AotCR
Heh - Ash continues his Assault on the Control Room antics. Way back in July 2002, someone discovered that you could alter the ending cutscene (but not the final outcome, actually) to this classic Halo level by bringing a baddie with you as the scene ended. Lennox did it with a Hunter, Warbow did it with a Banshee... but nobody (until now) has managed to do it with a Gold Elite. Why? Because the Gold Elite you USUALLY fight near the end will die spontaneously as you enter the doorway, if he's still alive. That's not true if you bring one from somewhere else, though... and unlike Warbow's banshee case, if the Gold Elite kills you in the Control Room, it DOES break the rest of the scripted cutscene. Check out Ash's movie at FileFront. This trick is 6 years old - and it's STILL not tapped out! That's amazing. (Louis Wu 14:49:46 UTC)

Fable 2 LE comes with MC
Heh. Microsoft released details of the Fable 2 Limited Collector's Edition - and one of the bonuses is a medieval Master Chief. Swing by FileFront for the story, and a fun pic. (Louis Wu 19:15:00 UTC)

From Dogs to the Universe
Heh - sort of a stretch, but pretty cool. Old Mattacus pointed us towards this article in a recent issue of Harper's - it's not really about Halo, but a small piece is related, and intriguing. It's a discussion of a contagious form of cancer in Tasmanian devils, but about halfway through the article, the author discusses other forms of contagious cancer, and focuses on Canine Transmissible Venereal Tumor (CTVT) - an organism that is more related to tumors in other dogs with the malignancy than it is to its own host.

In other words, CTVT can be conceptualized as a single creature, a parasite (and not a species of parasite, but an individual), which has managed to spread itself out among millions of different dogs. Research by molecular geneticists suggests the tumor originated in a wolf, or maybe an East Asian dog, somewhere between 200 and 2,500 years ago, which means that CTVT is probably the oldest continuous lineage of mammal cells presently living on Earth. The dogs may be young, but the tumor is ancient.

As OM suggests, life sometimes imitates art - CTVT is an awful lot like the Flood! (Louis Wu 18:07:05 UTC)

Keeping It Clean
Heh - over at Tied the Leader, you'll find a fun exposition on the woes of wearing Recon in Matchmaking (made me smile), and a level-headed reminder that the subject we find ourselves up in arms about occasionally is, after all, only a game. Thanks, XerxdeeJ. (Louis Wu 10:14:45 UTC)

Stage Five - sooner than expected
Heh - fans have spoken up in the missed announcement situation, with respect to the game that Bungie didn't tell us about at E3 this year. Mega64 takes Bungie to task for their failed promises (hilarious, thanks, StormyTheRabbit), and Impervium uses net resources to tell a happier (for Bungie, at least) story. (There are variants further down in that thread, as well.) I'm glad people are laughing about it all! (Not everyone is laughing - Narcogen, over at Rampancy.net, has taken a pretty hard look at the LA Times article that came out a couple of days ago, and the pettiness he found made him angry. Worth a read - some things that make you go 'hmmmmm'...) (Louis Wu 11:30:51 UTC)

Recon for Recon
Heh - cool. Bungie has issued a bizarre challenge - spot an unidentified employee as he (I'm pretty sure it's a 'he') travels across the western US, wearing one of two specific shirts, introduce yourself while holding a copy of Halo 3, and you'll get Recon. There are some restrictions - read the post for full details. (Louis Wu 21:24:19 UTC)

Library Learns from Halo LAN
Heh - the Plumsted, NJ public library has discovered that you can attract a little-seen demographic (young adults) by hosting a Halo lanfest. (The article mentions that young MALE adults were brought in - but the picture accompanying the story shows a mixed audience.) The question is, are they checking out books before they leave? Blind Wolf - in Spore
Heh, cool. Remember the Blind Wolf? It made its first appearance in 'Evolution', a retrospective look at Halo's development, and then showed up as concept art (screenshot, 60k) in the 'Cutting Room Floor' feature of the Halo 2 Special Edition DVD. This morning, KraZi Chief sent us a shot taken from within the Creature Creator demo for the game Spore - nice start! (KraZi Chief complained about the color palette and the lack of resources remaining - and hinted there might be more 'Halo-esque critters' coming later on. Even with the limitations, this looks great!) (Louis Wu 13:11:17 UTC)

No Mail for Cortana
Heh - Anton P. Nym noticed that Willamette Week, a Portland, OR weekly newspaper, interviewed Jen Taylor, because of a role she's got at Portland Center Stage right now... and when the conversation turned to Jen's experience voicing Cortana for the Halo series, she said that she doesn't get any fan mail related to the character. Steve (Mr. Nym) wonders if she hasn't inadvertently opened a floodgate or two... (Louis Wu 15:18:48 UTC)

How to Suck Less at Halo - a Series
Geekscape Games is running a series of articles called 'Teabag Prevention' - they're there to teach you how to 'suck less at Halo'. Week 1 was published back on April 22, and focused on the Legendary maps. Week 2, published a day later (heh), contains Sniper Rifle tips. Week 3, from May 2, helps you with a Battle Rifle, and Week 4, posted just a couple of days ago, provides tips on grenade placement. They're definitely not going for the crystal and linen set with their presentation - but then, that set doesn't play a lot of Halo, anyway. Go read! (Louis Wu 15:07:43 UTC)

Halo 3.5 (sort of)
Heh - VelocityTino was given an assignment in a video class - dialogue was supplied, and he had to produce a scene using it. He decided to create a live-action Halo short. Amazing work for one guy. Check it out! (Louis Wu 19:10:53 UTC)

M Squared.
Heh - Maluu and MrOllie are back to their old Trick-Jumping ways, with a JumpTactics entry into the MLG Pro Film Festival Contest. It's short, and it makes extensive use of tweaked damage settings... but it's beautiful. Go watch. Thanks to RVideo for the heads-up. (Louis Wu 14:33:17 UTC)

This Transformer is Not a Natural Formation!
Heh - Hawty McBloggy noticed another Halo-related custom Transformer on eBay; this one changes from the Master Chief to a Warthog (sort of). I got a lot of flak the last time I posted a Transformer auction - folks were suggesting it was a total ripoff, all the guy had done was paint a transformer and add an MC head. That's as may be - if you think it's worthless, don't buy it, don't bid on it. The simple fact is, finding some of these figures at ALL is hard - and not everyone's got the time to custom-paint one. If you're the type of person who'd rather buy than make... check this out. (Louis Wu 18:38:36 UTC)

Writing dialogue with no reference
Heh - bizarreness. Narcogen also noticed an interview with Eric Trautmann over at Earth's Greatest - he talked about writing a lot of the dialogue in Halo in a really short time... and under absurd conditions.

So, we had three days to bang out some ridiculous amount of dialogue, but they wouldn't actually let us LOOK at the game (which is why some of the dialogue doesn't make total sense; I conservatively estimate we got it about 80-90% right, which I think is an accomplishment given how blind we were flying).

I'll betcha a dollar that Cortana's "this cave is not a natural formation!" line is explained by this situation. Pretty neat to see behind the scenes after the fact... sort of amazing it turned out as well as it did! (Louis Wu 15:08:00 UTC)

That's gonna leave a mark.
Heh - The Onion Radio News has a piece (it's labeled 'podcast', but it's only a minute long) on 'blown skulls and nearly-fatal bowel movements' seen since Halo 3 was released. Funny. Thanks, dzejms. (Louis Wu 19:47:09 UTC)
