Dreaming...
SteelGaribaldi noticed that Halo showed up in today's Foxtrot. Heh. (Louis Wu 18:54:39 UTC)

Plasma Pistol for Sale
Gryponosiris found a Covenant Plasma Pistol replica (heh - as though there's a REAL one I need to differentiate from) on eBay; two days left, starting bid of $99. I guess this is becoming big business! Bungie has said, more than once, that the day might come when they crack down on this stuff... so if you're interested in this sort of thing, buy it while you can! (Louis Wu 13:56:40 UTC)

7 on the 7th - next phase
Heh - it's been so long, many of you have probably forgotten... but the 7 on the 7th Halo Joke contest closed its doors to submissions last night, and judging has begun. Even after tossing the stuff that's not Halo-related, there is still a HUGE list of jokes to go through... but never fear, we'll pick 7 winners soon, and announce them when we do! Goliath
Another very cool piece from Bryn 'ofthehi77' Casey - this one is a space battle tidbit known as 'Goliath. Sizeable (325k, and just about big enough for a monster screen wallpaper)... but definitely worth the look. Check it out! (Louis Wu 21:46:51 UTC)

Stupid Halo Tricks, indeed.
Heh - you need an account at Red vs Blue to read this... but it's worth it. Burnie wrote up a journal entry showing off one of the tricks they've figured out recently; it turns off dynamic shadows in Halo 2 multiplayer - or adds them, selectively, to characters not affected. He's offered a reward (unspecified) for anyone who figures out how they did it. (I warn you now; there are over 300 comments in the thread, and most of them will numb your brain; figuring out what's already been suggested is non-trivial.) The pictures are really cool (there are more spread throughout the comments section, as Burnie has added new examples), and there's a short video showing the effect in the green room on Lockout. (Be aware that you are not seeing an unbroken stream of action there; the video was edited to show before and after, but the 'during' is gone.) Cool stuff! Update: Burnie created a new journal entry to explain the solution; basically, the 'camera' looks at the target in the desired lighting, and then the target moves to the new location (with different lighting) without the 'camera' watching. Once there, he stops moving - and when the camera gets there, he sees the target in the original lighting. There's a movie showing this at work if this is too confusing. Pretty cool glitch, and really useful in some machinima situations! (Louis Wu 14:22:19 UTC)

G'night... finally.
And THAT ends my posting spree. Why the rush? Well, because in less than 4 hours, I get in a car and drive to the airport, and fly to a place that's far, far away. (Where we're going... there are no roads. Wait, that's wrong.) For the next 8 days, you're in the capable hands of the REST of the HBO staff - I MAY pop in now and then, IF I can find a net connection, and IF I get bored of drinking mai-tais on the beach... but likely, not too much. What does this mean for news submitters? Send your news to halo@bungie.org - or be prepared to wait a week for it to be posted. (Heh. I bet I get a news item sent to lwu@bungie.org in the next 15 minutes.) Enjoy yourselves, behave, and don't rattle the Count's cage. I'll send a postcard! (Louis Wu 05:35:21 UTC)

HEH - for CS
DKN2 found a new version of Hang 'em High, built for Counter-Strike (the original, not Source). Check it out! (Louis Wu 22:27:16 UTC)

It holds the universe together.
Heh - cool. gunluva created a bunch of Halo weapons out of duct tape, cardboard, and some popsicle sticks - you can see pictures in his Red vs Blue profile's images section if you have an account there, or direct-linked in this forum post if you don't. (Louis Wu 15:17:01 UTC)

How long has THAT been there?
Heh - Larry Peterson found this picture, and wondered... have the Forerunner been building in Mexico City? (Louis Wu 20:02:38 UTC)

Duck Season
A little birdie pointed out a trailer over at apple.com for a movie coming out next month: Duck Season was made by Mexican director Fernando Eimbcke, and covers a day in the life of two fourteen-year-old boys. The Halo angle? Heh. Watch the trailer. (Louis Wu 18:13:00 UTC)

Heh - this is pretty funny. Flash, just over 6 minutes long. Thanks, Caz. (Louis Wu 23:50:26 UTC)

The Pungent Aroma of Bananas and Malt Liquor.
Heh - over on Bungie.net, Frankie points out a new batch of Letters to the Webmaster. (Oh, hey, look, he was first on our forum, too.) For the record, the 'Louis' who asked the final question was as made up as the info in the answer. (Louis Wu 03:00:52 UTC)

Is that Kate Jackson under that helmet?
Heh - Samantha sent us this picture a little while ago - maybe this should be the default vehicle of IBO? (Louis Wu 20:32:51 UTC)

Driving Keyes
Wow. This guy doesn't stop. Last week, we mentioned that scurty had finished the level Keyes in under 3 minutes on Easy, and under 4 on Legendary; he's pared that Legendary time down to 3:09... with no shots fired. Video quality isn't so good (looks like he's been using the same VHS tape for the last 300 runs or so - heh), but the shortcuts are incredible. Check 'em out! (We've put up mirrors - WMP9 | QT - to save on mythica's UserUploads bandwidth.) And thanks to insidi0us for keeping track. (Louis Wu 17:28:09 UTC)

The Amoury - for sale
Heh, cool. Out of Reach Constructions (we've mentioned them a couple of times, they make pretty spiffy display cases for Halo action figures) is selling The Armoury, display setup for the extra weapons you get with your action figures, on eBay. What a gift this would make for the Halo fanatic in your life! Thanks, Flamechu. (Louis Wu 17:24:52 UTC)

20K want to play INXS
Heh - remember a week or two ago, when we mentioned that the next Game With Fame event on Xbox Live would be with members of the band INXS? According to this article in the Vancouver Sun, more than 20,000 people have signed up in hopes of snagging one of the 100 slots available. Wow! (Louis Wu 19:02:36 UTC)

Bryn Casey Delivers.
Bryn 'ofthehi77' Casey let us know about another pair of paintings he'd posted recently - we've added them to his gallery here. 'Terminal' is a great view of the Terminal garage... and 'Delta Halo' is... well, just what you'd expect. Really nice work - be sure to take a look! (Louis Wu 21:41:32 UTC)

A different take
Heh - Peter Moore talked to Computer and Video Games a couple of days ago, and discussed the next installment of Halo as though MS was actually holding it back on purpose. Reading his words, one might almost get the idea that the decision NOT to release Halo 3 as a launch title for the Xbox360 was made not so much because it wasn't done, but because they wanted the 360 to be able to stand on its own, and not be 'a Halo box'. How convenient, then, that Halo 3 isn't actually ready for release (or, in fact, even announced as in production)! Thanks, voregaffer. (Louis Wu 11:41:28 UTC)

Double You Tee Eff, Mate.
1Up.com has put up a piece called 'Top Ten WTF Moments of 2005' - and coming in at number 7 (heh) is 'Spartan in DOA'. The reason it made the list? "Because when you think of one-on-one, boob jiggling martial arts action, you think of Halo." Fair enough! Thanks, 3Suns. (Louis Wu 12:47:35 UTC)

Handicaps, Music, and the Forbidden!
Frankie's WWU is now up for public consumption. Short and sweet as he says, but it does contain some very nice nuggets of info. The office gets their hands on DOA4, Max talks about the often forgotten handicap setting which helps even players out, and we get a near-final track list of Volume 2 of the Halo Soundtrack! Go Marty, go!

Of course, with the good you get the yucky. In this case, bring along a pail, because the picture of one of our favorite cananimators is likely to churn even the strongest of stomachs. OMG!

Kudos to... ME for noticing it first! (ok, I'm sure someone emailed Wu before I noticed it, but I'm posting it here first!)

Update: Eep - didn't notice Ding got here first. I'll add the local BWU Archive link to his post, and yank my own. Hehe - didn't even OCCUR to me that other staff might actually be working tonight! (Ding 00:18:27 UTC)

Rise of the Elites
Heh - Frankie pointed out a thread on the Bungie.net forums yesterday, in which a fan has suggested that next week (January 9-15) should be Elite Week; folks should switch over to the Elite model on Xbox Live for the week. Heck... we've certainly done SILLIER things... (Louis Wu 18:34:25 UTC)

Lil Poison and Pro Cards at MLG
A couple of tidbits over at MLGPro.com - the Player of the Week this week is Lil Poison, the 7-year-old wunderkind; "pound for pound, Lil Poison is quite possibly the best gamer in the world." Heh. Nice interview. (Thanks, 3Suns.) And they've started a fun new feature - Pro Player Cards, where you can get all the stats on your favorite Halo pros. (It doesn't look like they're actually PRINTING these yet - they're just online. I'd be curious, though, if there were a real live market for this sort of thing...) Thanks again, 3Suns. Easiest way to make a new logo...
Heh. In Surfers Paradise, in southern Queensland (east coast of Australia), there's an attraction called 'Spacewalker' - their website, as noticed by lightinfantry, uses an image that is rather familiar to most of us here. (I've taken a screenshot, on the off chance that any legal interest generated by this news post actually makes them alter the site.) You gotta wonder... do people just think that something as big as Halo is simply public domain at this point? (Louis Wu 14:23:39 UTC)

Dark Horse did Oni, right?
Heh. Every time I front-page a forum post of mine, I get some flak from regulars about post-h00ring... but hey, you gotta do what you gotta do. It's a quiet day, and I'm hoping to get more people to weigh in on this subject... how cool would it be if someone were to create a Halo-based comic book... and what stories would get told? There are TONS of hardcore comic fans out there who play Halo - let us know your thoughts! (Louis Wu 18:13:06 UTC)
