Bene, bene...
Hehe - Bungie's Tru7h and Reconciliation site has been updated - the Gallery contains clips from 6 different foreign-language builds of Halo (well, 5 plus English, for comparison), as well as new Storyboards of the final scene. (The quality of the translations seems to vary pretty widely - or maybe it's the voice acting; some seem very much in character, while others...) Check 'em out! (Louis Wu 01:57:38 UTC)

EL-E-VA-TION!
A new mirror for What Goes Up has gone up (heh) at Rampancy.net's web site, to complement the copy on their Hotline server. All the mirrors so far can be found on our WGU Mirrors page. (Count Zero 19:24:48 UTC)

Battle of the Bay
Heh - take your lanfest to the Next Level. The Bay Area Halo Players Group have put together a pretty slick website for the Battle of the Bay, an upcoming lanfest in San Francisco. They're looking for 48 Halo players to participate - they've got Bungie-supplied swag to give away, and the Official Xbox Magazine is talking about filming some footage for inclusion on their monthly DVD. The only catch? It ain't free. (Admission fee is $20, or $15 if you supply hardware). If you live in or near San Francisco, this sounds like a killer event! (Thanks to Rico for the heads-up.) Warthog on the bridge!
Heh - very cool. Deimos™, of Subnova, has managed to get the Warthog back to the very start of the level Halo - follow this link, then head to the bottom of his 'Halo fun page' for a pic. (We'll be adding this to the One-Shots page in the near future.) (Louis Wu 14:49:15 UTC)

Boom!
Heh - Aaron Suhr made a short movie showing a pretty nifty way of killing a Banshee. I've never had that sort of luck... (Louis Wu 15:06:34 UTC)

Halo movie poster

Halo on an AIM Buddy icon
Heh - Ben Bayes writes to say that badassbuddy.com has just put up a new AIM Buddy icon showing the Master Chief doin' his thing. Amazing what you can fit in to 50x50 pixels... (Louis Wu 20:28:40 UTC)

Yeah, yeah...
Heh - Mark Levin points out this page, devoted to an Xbox emulator. Sounds exciting... except that the screenshot of the emulator showing Halo in action looks... somewhat familiar. Okay, REALLY familiar. In fact, I don't think you can actually REPRODUCE this scene in the shipping version of Halo. Ah, well... careful what you download. More info: Further investigation by folks who are good at this sort of thing (read further down in the thread) suggest this is nothing more than a hoax, and a poorly done one at that. Amazon pushes Halo
Heh - turns out the Editor of Amazon.com's 'Xbox Delivers' feature (a newsletter delivered to over 100,000 Amazon visitors) is a Halo fan - this week's note is devoted to Halo, and all the goodies you can get with it. Take a look! (Louis Wu 02:36:34 UTC)

The Spirit Awakens
Heh - Mr Bill Jr V asks on our forum, 'Is there too much Fan Fiction?' Half an hour earlier, though, he submitted 'The Awakening', a sequel (of sorts) to his earlier 'The Spirit'. You can find these (and many many more - too many?) in our Fan Fiction section. (Louis Wu 02:35:58 UTC)

Confusing, those games...
Heh - The Seattle Post-Intelligencer put up a shot of Ed Fries, as he

its in front of a photo of Munch, a character from Halo, one of the games made for the recently released Xbox.

Um... no. Thanks to Devin O'Reilly for the entertaining heads-up. (Louis Wu 01:21:18 UTC)

They're never wrong...
Heh - bonus screenshot! Max tells us we're confused - a short update on the T&R site:

You imagined that duplicate screenshot. Go check for yourself. Us, slipping? Never!

(He's referring to a comment we made last night...) Upshot - everyone gets a surplus screenshot. It's a pretty nice one, to boot! (We've added it to our Screenshots database... but the original is still there, to remind those guys to keep on their toes...) Thanks to mnemesis for the heads-up. (Louis Wu 21:26:25 UTC)

FoR (sort of) reviewed at Xbox365
Heh - Xbox365 has written a rather confused review of Halo: The Fall of Reach. While it's nice to see the book get some press of its own, it would be nicer if the reviewer got the facts straight...

Ever wondered where the cool storyline in Halo comes from? Did you really think that the dudes at Bungie & Microsoft came up with the Covenent, MasterChief and the curvy Cortana? Think again. Halo, The Fall of Reach is the original book from Eric Nylund that introduces Halo, and it's amazing powers.

(As a matter of fact, the dudes at Bungie and Microsoft DID come up with those things... and Eric Nylund worked closely with members of the team to flesh out parts of the storyline and create a complementary novel. A pretty good one, even.) The rest of the review suffers from more of the same confusion... but again, it's nice to see it being hyped at all. Thanks to Miguel "I was only joking" Chavez for the heads-up. (Louis Wu 19:17:10 UTC)

PA gets tired of Halo
Heh - the boys of Penny Arcade seem to be over their infatuation with Halo; today's comic (and indeed the news) suggest that they never want to see it again:

I've heard people say it's too short. That's a hard case to argue - in fact, quite the opposite is true. This is a game that feels as though it was unduly lengthened by committee, affixed to some perverse device, warped and stretched to near infinity. I'd put forth that a game is only too short when you still want to play it by the end. [slight spoiler snipped - go read it at PA] I've never actually groaned before when a game's protagonist implies there will be a sequel. That's something I can't say anymore.

Thanks to R.net, for catching this one first. (Louis Wu 16:42:37 UTC)

More comparisons...
Heh - people see funny things. :) A month ago, we wondered whether Captain Keyes (as rendered in the game) might bear some resemblance to Joe Staten... now septimus prime, over on the Marathon's Story page forum, is wondering if the storyboard version of the Captain (visible on Bungie's Tru7h and Reconciliation site) might not be modeled after the Story page founder, Hamish Sinclair, himself.

separated at birth?

You be the judge. (Louis Wu 21:18:52 UTC)

Hack that Xbox!
You know, one of the coolest things about Bungie employees is that sometimes, they think like fans. :) Yesterday, a forum visitor asked about IPX through IP tunneling, as a way to connect Xboxes across the net (while making them think they're LAN-connected) - and the response of a Bungie network programmer?

my thoughts are I'm glad to hear people considering this :O)

Heh - and to think someone told me this evening how easy it is for an innocent comment to spin out of control on these boards... (Louis Wu 05:25:42 UTC)

Fan art in the oddest of places
Heh - sometimes, you just gotta get your content where you can find it... I was hunting through the Xbox.com.au site to see if I could find an official release date for the Xbox in Australia (no luck there) - and I happened across the Halo page. They have a pretty fun little Flash animation to show off some of the cool stuff in Halo... but the funny part was, it finishes up with a copy of this desktop image, created by a fan way back in 1999! Ken, if you're still out there... you're famous! :) (Louis Wu 21:05:11 UTC)

Halo preview at VoodooExtreme
VoodooExtreme has posted a hands-on Halo preview - they took issue with the controller, and mentioned the framerate concerns, but mostly, they just liked the game:

The writing is great, the story is solid, and to be honest, Halo is hands-down the best action game I've ever played in my life.

A full review will be coming on November 15 (heh - VE and 80 million other sites) - go read the preview now! (Louis Wu 09:15:09 UTC)

Marty's gonna scalp someone...
A boatload of updates coming... bear with me as I write 'em up, one by one. First up: the TGS movie. Many people have been complaining about a couple of features of this movie - first, that there are three separate cov kills at the start that use the same bit of soundtrack (same covenant grunt, same background chatter), and second, that the Covenant commander who's taken down with a pair of sniper rounds (and a miss between them, to boot) doesn't show a lot of smarts in terms of saving his own hide. Matt Soell was kind enough to jump into our forum with a pair of responses - here's what he had to say about the repetitive soundtrack, and here was his AI reply. Hope this clarifies a bit! (And for those who were wondering about the much-vaunted Covenant commander, taken down with a measly pair of sniper rounds:

Which brings up another point: whoever was playing in this footage was playing at something less than the normal difficulty level. It's not that easy, folks.

Heh - makes me wish even more for a film mode. :) Go read 'em for yourself! (Louis Wu 01:16:07 UTC)

Mike Salmon on Halo's quality
Heh - FunXbox interviewed Mike Salmon, Editor-in-Chief of the Official Xbox Magazine, and the last question was pretty amusing:

FunXbox: How much of an ass do you feel like giving Halo a lower predicted review score, after having played it more recently :) ?
Mike Salmon: I consistently feel like an ass - I've just come to accept it as being me. As for the Halo "guestimate," we gave it great scores. The Official Xbox Magazine isn't going to give every game a 10 and we're going to use the whole scale. In my opinion if every single game gets an 8 or above then why do you even have a 1-7 on your scale? We'll be fair, but we'll be tough. That being said, the latest build of Halo is absolutely amazing. Ed Fries and his team delivered way beyond our expectations.

(Mike's a pretty nice guy when it comes to interviews - he talked to us way back in April 2000 about Halo and what he'd seen of it on his tour of the Bungie offices. At that time he was EIC of PC Accelerator, a magazine which went under soon after. We don't think we had anything to do with that.) (Louis Wu 01:35:42 UTC)

Matt's got a secret...
Heh - the gooey green stuff is a big-enough surprise that even being on the Halo Dev team doesn't guarantee you know what it is - Chris Butcher (over on the R.net forum) says even HE can't answer the question Matt asked yesterday. (Louis Wu 09:44:38 UTC)

Off to E3...
I'm leavin', on a jet plane... heh. I'm heading out to the airport in 20 minutes, to fly out to LA in time for tonight's Bungie Fanfest... today's news will be rather light, but we should make up for it over the next few days. Keep an eye on Wirehead - he's been acting funny recently. (Louis Wu 09:56:22 UTC)
