Maybe if the callouts had been quieter...
Heh - some guy showed up at at New York public library, with his Xbox and a monitor... and put some effort into setting up the gear so that he could leech off the public wifi to play a little Halo 3. According to the person who snapped the photo, it took him 20 minutes to set up, and 2 minutes to get booted. Dude... try Starbucks. (Louis Wu 22:55:34 UTC)

Halo - a decent selling point
Heh - looks like Halo's being used to sell PC motherboards these days! Linken91 noticed an ad on the Asus website advertising the Rampage II GENE motherboard. As Psychophan7 points out, it's common for PC manufacturers to use images from games to help sell their products - what makes this different is a pair of factors: 1) the images are clearly composited from more than one game (most images are simply taken from a game's assets - on the same website, Asus uses shots from Crysis: Warhead to sell similar products), and 2) there's an amusing statement at the bottom of all of the ROG pages: "All images strictly copyright asustek 2009 all rights reserved. Any from [sic] of unauthorized use of the contents of this site is prohibited." It's one thing to borrow someone else's design to help sell your product - it's another thing entirely to say it's yours. (Louis Wu 18:51:58 UTC)

Facebook with Guns
If you're into social networking, there are plenty of choices these days - the Facebook Nation has more citizens than Brazil, Twitter lets you describe your activity in real time. These aren't really aimed at gamers, though. Even a site like Rooster Teeth (where I spend most of my social networking time), while oriented towards gamers, is more about bringing gamers together with shared interests (not necessarily related to games) than about providing gamers with a place to organize gaming. Enter The Hive Project. Built from the ground up by a bunch of long-time Halo fans (and Halo fansite veterans), this site is designed to give you, as a gamer, a way to hook up with other gamers. You can form groups that others can join - and since each group has its own private forum, The Hive Project can work as free clan hosting. Advertise your latest event, share your favorite photos, write up a blog post, interact with others just like you. They've just kicked off an Open Beta - swing by and sign up, and see what they've got to offer! (Louis Wu 15:18:44 UTC)

The RFID Skull Project
Heh - VERY cool. a website called 'I Make Projects' contains information about a working, real-life Halo oddball skull, for use in Airsoft/laser tag games (or whatever). The skull contains electronics that read the RFID tag that each player wears - so you gain time by holding the skull close to your chest, with both thumbs in the eye sockets (so you can't shoot). You have to hold it in a certain way - I'd assume there's no easy way to trigger two separate tags at once. There are full details and a movie showing how it works, along with plans to make your own. Awesome! Thanks to Dan O'Neil for the heads-up. (Louis Wu 16:16:10 UTC)

When Gold Bars Aren't Enough
Heh - for those who feel that Bungie's limits on Rank (Grade 4? pfft) are too hobbling, HaloCharts has cranked up the options - to Grade 7. Or even higher! Swing by this page for details on these expanded ranks. Thanks, Pete Venkman. (Louis Wu 04:26:13 UTC)

Joystiq vs. Bungie: A Mythic Halo 3 Challenge
Heh - Joystiq and Bungie are facing off in a Mythic Halo 3 challenge this week... and Joystiq is trying to make sure their deck is stacked. They're looking for the best Halo 3 players in the community to play on their team - chosen members will receive a Mythic Map Pack code for their troubles, plus Recon armor if they win the game they play in. If you'd like the chance to participate, add a comment to the story and list the information they need to make their decisions. Can Joystiq beat Bungie at their own game? We'll see! More on Halo Comics from Marvel
CaptainTony stopped by with a couple of links that shed more light on the 'two new Halo comic series from Marvel' story we mentioned last week. Marvel News has a publicity piece on the series, and IGN did an interview with the writers behind the comics. Salient points: The first series will be called 'Halo: Helljumpers', and it will focus on ODSTs. Both series expand the existing Halo storyverse. And (maybe most intriguingly... or maybe not), as of the date of the IGN article (Feb 8), Issue 4 of the long-delayed Uprising series "is in the process of being colored, and [...] a firm release date will be announced in the near future." Heh. We'll see. (Louis Wu 16:28:05 UTC)

Halo: Your Beer Is Your Own
Heh - this was a funny little quote I ran across; it's got Halo relevance, so I figured it was worth posting. Nathan Fillion (Firefly, Serenity, and of course Halo 3) was discussing his upcoming role in a new animated series of 'Wonder Woman'... and had some wise words to say about Halo:

I'm a Halo guy. The Bungie folks were kind enough to have me do a voice for Halo 3. So there's nothing like sitting down to a nice game of Halo and shooting at myself. I like to get online, and the reason I like it is I've got a lot of friends in Canada and New York, all over Los Angeles and at great distances. Sometimes I take off for months at a time to go work, and my social time is on that box. You put on a little headset and unwind with your friends. You hang out, you laugh, it's good times. And when it's all done, you don't have to send anybody home. No one's drunk all your beer. You just say, 'Good night, I'm going to bed,' and it's off and it's done.

The man's got his priorities straight. (Louis Wu 19:00:51 UTC)

Rumors, probably fake
Over at NeoGAF, Stormtrooper30 pointed out a rumor that popped up on the Europe-Nintendo forums (heh) suggesting that in the next few months, Microsoft would begin patching original Xbox titles to retroactively add achievements. First on the supposed list? Halo: Combat Evolved. Before you get your hopes up, Luke Smith immediately chimed in with a sobering comment: "That's nothing we've heard of." It's POSSIBLE that Microsoft is doing this without Bungie's knowledge... but not horribly likely. (Luke also pointed out how much work it would be to retrofit an older game with achievements. As he says, "don't hold your breath.") (Louis Wu 14:53:40 UTC)

Man, that's big.
Heh - Stephen Loftus shows that, as mentioned in the Art of Halo 3 book, a UNSC Pelican is large enough to fit an Abrams M1A1 Main Battle Tank in its troop bay (though Bry would argue the semantics of 'fit'). Fun discussion! Update: a few cool details have been added by Lorraine 'mehve' McLees. (Louis Wu 23:47:08 UTC)

A Drawn-on Life
Heh - Kotaku has a story about Matt 'mothergoat' Cox, who has produced a rather large body of work in the Halo fan community and is now a lead designer at 5TH Cell. Apparently, he went on vacation recently, and while he was gone, his coworkers pranked him by wrapping his entire desk in brown paper (which they then lovingly labeled). Even the Master Chief Legendary helmet on the shelf got wrapped! Fun stuff. Thanks, ArteenEsben. (Louis Wu 15:02:42 UTC)

It's easier to build a base with existing planets.
Heh - prescient, or just lucky? NiTrOuS 343 ran across an article at Yahoo News that discusses the Epsilon Eridanus system... and how scientists think they've found evidence of a planetary system there. Reach just got more feasible! (Louis Wu 14:59:52 UTC)
