I think I'll call you... Pumbaa.
The Bungie Weekly Update is up over on Bungie.net - and it does a bunch of stuff. It tries to talk reason into people screaming about how much Bungie sucks for cutting online co-op (heh - yeah, right), it teases you with a 'regular schedule' for the Bungie podcast, it tantalizes with information about new behaviors of the Energy Sword, it transmogrifies reality with images of a real-life Warthog, it triggers excitement in people living in (or near) specific cities, and it tortures you with Mister Chief 'artwork'. (And even more, but I ran out of T words.) Go read - either at Bungie.net or in our Weekly Update Archive. (Louis Wu 23:58:03 UTC)

Some of the best games you'll ever see
411Mania.com has a summary of the best of E3, and although they felt that Microsoft had blown their chance at locking up the console wars, and although they were VERY unhappy with the Halo 3 trailer, they STILL rated Halo 3 as Best of Show. Heh - not bad. (Louis Wu 12:19:12 UTC)

Virtual Virtuosos
The Dallas Morning News has a tongue-in-cheek editorial about video game pros; while it pokes fun at the whole idea, there's a grain of truth running through the article. However much the mother in question would like to ridicule the kids who are making a living (heh - in some cases, better than your average living) 'twiddling their thumbs'... they ARE making it work. Give it a read. (Louis Wu 15:12:36 UTC)

Heh - a fun take on an overdone concept. Thanks, Major.Dump. (Louis Wu 12:05:06 UTC)

Calamity
Heh - we got word from Trevor Mack that there was a monster montage at Halo3Forum; 22 minutes, 350 mb, gameplay from a host of players. I told him that we generally don't front-page H3F montages unless the request comes from the site owner - and that 22 minutes is pretty ridiculous for a montage anyway. Curious, though, I downloaded it; I mean... 22 minutes? I gotta say - I was floored by the gameplay. Some INSANE kills. Tweak is astoundingly good with noscopes from the back of a Mongoose. Not too long after that, I got a note from Z, asking if we'd announce this very montage - so there you go. If you love montages, and have the time (and disk space) to grab a 350 mb movie... go get Calamity. (Louis Wu 20:14:52 UTC)

Whippersnappers
Heh - a reporter for the Edmonton Sun challenged Tom 'TSquared' Taylor to a 1v1 match on Lockout. Here's his side of the story - and here's MLG's take. Funny stuff. Thanks, 3Suns. (Louis Wu 21:40:22 UTC)

Still Sharp
Heh - Stuntmutt might be caring for a newborn (well, with help), but he's still got time for teh funni - he stopped by the ARG forum yesterday to post a bonus shot at the ARG, and at a community regular - and he used the AutoMagic 117 Stripz script to do it. (Scroll further down the ARG thread for a pic of the little 'un and daddy.) (Louis Wu 12:59:45 UTC)

That Terrible Grip
Heh - the boys at Penny Arcade turn their sights on the Halo 3 ARG - always good to get the cynical viewpoint. Thanks, Russ Robey. (Louis Wu 13:20:13 UTC)

Oh, Piss-boy...
A few months ago, KP took his mandatory break from Bungie (contracted employees must take three months off after nine months on) - and the way things worked out, he was hired back not by Bungie, but by Xbox.com, working under TriXie and organizing the cool content they bring to you. What sort of cool content, you might ask? Well... things like an interview with KP, conducted by TriXie. Heh. (It's a funny read, and mentions Halo a LOT, making it relevant here even if it wasn't about KP.) (Louis Wu 11:40:11 UTC)

Galactic Warrior
Heh - I'm not sure this won't cause a rush to find these outfits before they get pulled off the shelves... but Kotaku has a story about a Master Chief-looking costume for sale in K-Marts in Australia. It sure doesn't look Microsoft-sanctioned... but we've received more mail from people looking for buyable Halo costumes than nearly any other subject, so I'm guessing the market won't care a whole lot about whether these are approved or not. (Maybe if Microsoft actually got a licensed version out there...) Thanks, Littlebigman. (Louis Wu 14:55:59 UTC)

Halo 3 Beta - beaten by GoW and Crackdown
Interesting. According to Major Nelson, the Halo 3 Beta was the 3rd most-played title on Xbox Live last week - behind Gears of War and Crackdown. (Heh - I guess all those people playing Crackdown while waiting for access to the beta added up... thanks, BrentGamer. (Louis Wu 21:09:24 UTC)

Press Roundup
A few new Halo 3 Beta Impressions articles out now - Gamespy, Game Feed, Paul Thurrott's SuperSite for Windows (heh - gettin' in on the console action, I guess). The beta's certainly picking up its share of press... Update: Here's one more, pretty extensive, from Ciarán Walsh (from our forum). Update 2: And another one, from GameDaily. Spoons
Heh - Yesterday, VG Cats put up a Halo-related strip... this is definitely one of the biggest problems with the Mongoose, just ask Joe Staten and KP. Thanks to Pak in the #hbo IRC channel for the heads-up. (Louis Wu 12:34:36 UTC)

Halo-wood... gah.
Dry Ice, our reporter on the ground in Hollywood (heh), found a writeup of the Hollywood press event on Xbox.com - complete with video footage. Get a look at the place, the people, and watch an interview with Joe 'New0001' Tung, Halo 3's Multiplayer Producer (and notorious sniper whore). (Louis Wu 13:59:05 UTC)

[T]rickity Trick Four
Heh - cool. goatrope stopped by our forum to point out a new vid - [T]rickity Trick Four. Lots of jumping, a cool film glitch, and a hilarious use of a Bubble Shield on Snowbound - take a look! DivX format, 66 mb, hosted by Mythica. Update: some folks were having trouble with the encoding on that original release; there are now options. There's a YouTube version, there's an MLG-hosted embedded version in this post by synide, and we're hosting a QuickTime version. Watch it how you want. (Louis Wu 18:42:14 UTC)

Betalicious
MrJukes has been a part of the Halo moviemaking community since the very beginning; we still host an old mirror of his website, because his jumping vids ROCKED. If you swing by Bungie.net, you'll find a cool interview with the man - and a link to 'Betalicious', his latest piece of work. It's an ode to Halo 3 beta play (he works for Microsoft, so he's been playing on the internal alpha and beta for a while now) - it should pump you up for next week's beta kickoff. Because we know that a lot of people simply can't enjoy WMP9 versions, we've put up a QuickTime version - this is the second in our H.264 series (yes, it looks like we're FINALLY moving away from Sorenson3Pro, at least to some degree). Go read the interview, go watch the movie - and you can jump into a pretty big forum thread if you want to comment. Update: QT is now mirrored by Blackstar - thanks! Update 2: Wraith - Ops has offered a second one. (Heh - I think that's probably enough now...) (Louis Wu 02:58:04 UTC)

Simultaneous discoveries?
Heh - yesterday, we mentioned some posted, but unlinked pictures darthbob found on bungie.net - the thread got bigger, and a number of other shots were discovered (including a pair of mongoose pics. This morning, when I got up, Google news pointed me to TalkXbox, where an article posted today shows off all 5 new shots found yesterday. I can't imagine they'd just post these without attribution if they found them here, so I'm gonna say congratulations for the simultaneous discoveries! (Louis Wu 14:23:15 UTC)

Minds First, Hearts Will Follow

Told ya.
Heh - Yahoo has put up a feature called 'Games are Good for You', which points out some positive benefits that games have had (with specific examples). Halo gets mentioned as a tool to help students "understand the complexities of Homeric epics" (check out the original article at the University of Connecticut). Thanks, || Sgt Scope ||. Enjoy Your Trip.
In today's strip, One One Se7en shows off his superior mental faculties. *snort* Betcha Stuntmutt never thought he'd see that on the front page. Update: Heh, my own mental faculties are apparently even less than One One Se7en's today - I mangled something somehow in loading the strip, so it's not there yet. Let us all reflect on how much we miss Wu at times like this. ;-) (mnemesis [lame] 18:13:43 UTC)

Squeezing the Customers
Over at The Age Blogs (commentary from an Australian newspaper) there's a rant about the two new maps coming next week, and how they're an example of Microsoft's money-grubbing policies. The argument is that since the maps will show up in most matchmaking playlists, and if you don't have them, you won't be allowed INTO those playlists, they constitute an unfair twisting of the purse strings; you MUST pay an additional $4 to continue to play Halo 2 matchmaking. Heh - when the maps were announced, and it was suggested that they might be for the 360 only, I remember complaining that it was unfair that I would be required to pay an additional $400 to buy a 360, just to continue playing Halo 2 Matchmaking. I'm not sure I could line up against an identical argument, even though the money required has dropped by two orders of magnitude (to $4), without sounding like a hypocrite... but the truth is, $4 just doesn't seem like a huge price to pay, to me. Make up your own mind - read the article. (Louis Wu 12:57:44 UTC)

New Map Shots from CA
Wonga. Certain Affinity has posted a large batch of screenshots and concept artwork for Tombstone and Desolation (and there's more if you poke around... at least until they decide to close off directory browsing - thanks, MasterChief2829 and pillar of awesome). Gorgeous stuff - and you can get a really good sense for how they've laid these two levels out! Only a few more days until we can play them ourselves... Update: Heh - directory browsing turned off now. Sorry. (That took less than 15 minutes...) Update 2: I was going to leave this on the forum, but it seems a lot of people are interested. With Shishka's blessing, I mirrored the content on the CA server; you can see the pictures on the pages they've got up, but also a few that AREN'T there. This is everything that was available before directory browsing was disabled. (Louis Wu 17:45:49 UTC)

Guitar Hero Gameplay, Revisited
Heh - you might remember a post last weekend where KP and e tried hard to play Halo 2 with Guitar Hero II controllers; fugitivesoldier ran across a video of someone doing a whole lot better playing the ORIGINAL Halo with that controller. Check it out! (Louis Wu 11:23:44 UTC)
