H3DA - Online and Functional
Lyca let us know that the Halo 3 Data Archive has finished a pretty monumental task; they've categorized and documented all released info about Halo 3 to date. Every tidbit is attributed to its source - if you ever need to figure out whether what your buddy is telling you is actually released info, or just rumor... this is a great place to look. (Needs a search function! Heh.) Check it out - but be warned, you can lose a lot of time here... (Louis Wu 09:45:53 UTC)

Fan-made HEH
NeuroKoNeza had been working on a remake of Hang 'Em High for Halo2Vista - he was shooting for a Colossus-type environment. You can see a couple of shots of his work in progress over on the Gearbox forums - looks like he's not sure whether to continue work, or simply let the Bungie version step in. Mark April 17 on your Calendar
Over at Bungie.net, you'll find a new Top Story - it's a look at two new maps soon to be available for download ($4 for the pair). Tombstone and Desolation are remakes of Hang 'Em High and Derelict, respectively, and there are screenshots in the Halo 2 Gallery. It'll be really interesting to see if Certain Affinity has managed to solve some of the problems that kept HEH from being ported 3 years ago... but I must say, it sure LOOKS gorgeous. Check 'em out! Thanks to TheBadgerWithin, who noticed 'em pretty quickly. (Louis Wu 16:17:14 UTC)

RvB Episode 92 Director's Commentary
Rooster Teeth has posted Episode 92 with Director's Commentary for sponsors - swing by to see how they did some of the trickier shots in that episode! Good stuff. (Heh - how long until some of this pops up in a dozen Halo machinima pieces?) (Louis Wu 02:00:52 UTC)

MS Stands Up for Crackdown
Reuters has an article up today in which Microsoft defends the placement of a Halo 3 beta invite in Crackdown boxes.

"People are definitely saying "I'm getting a free beta with 'Crackdown,' not the other way around," Evans said. "The 'Halo 3' beta isn't going to push the game's sales into the millions. 'Crackdown' is going to push its sales into the millions."

He's right, you know. You shouldn't buy Crackdown unless you WANT Crackdown - and there's more to it than many people guessed. Already, a couple of long-time bungie fans have retracted their originally negative comments about Crackdown, after playing the demo. Heh - as the February 20th release date of Crackdown gets closer, I bet we see more of these articles. (Louis Wu 15:06:18 UTC)

Halo 3 Beta Phase Two now closed
Microsoft has begun sending out emails to everyone registered back in December for a shot at the Halo 3 beta; these notes basically say that all 13,333 invites have been distributed, and if you haven't gotten one yet, you're not going to. (It also suggests that you can still get into the proram by buying Crackdown.) To those who made it - congratulations. To those who didn't - not ALL non-Crackdown slots have been filled yet, though if you absolutely positively don't want to miss the beta, it's certainly your best bet. Update: Heh. Bungie's Matchmaking Should be Shared
Interesting article at 1Up.com - Luke Smith reports that according to Phil Spenser, Head of Game Development for Microsoft Game Studios, Microsoft would like to spread Bungie's matchmaking code around to most (all?) first-party 360 games; the reason it didn't make it into Gears of War was a timing issue, not a code protection one. Heh - so right about the time that other games are catching up to where Bungie was in late 2004, we'll be seeing the NEXT evolution of their user interface in Halo 3. Sounds about right... The Community Awards show
Sigafoos dropped us a note about The Riot's First Annual Community Awards podcast, now available at Second Foundation. Awards are presented by community luminaries (heh), with a musical guest and everything. Congrats to all the winners - and in fact to all nominees; this community is only as strong as the people who help build it. 24 minutes, 10 mb. (RVideo has started a thread on our forum, if you have comments.) (Louis Wu 13:36:39 UTC)

A familiar grin
Heh - rapture found an image from Shadowrun that makes him wonder how close the FASA and Bungie studios really are... it's an image that's older than both of them, but still... (For the record, I'd have to say that his speculation about what this might mean in terms of the FASA engine is totally out of the blue.) (Louis Wu 13:31:29 UTC)

More Gender in Halo 2
Heh - this is one of the reasons I like this community so much. Cody Miller resurrected an older post from DanteThePoet, about gender usage in Halo 2... and the resultant thread is actually pretty highbrow, given the potential for crude humor. If you're interested in how women are portrayed in Halo 2, you might want to join in. (If you're looking for bathroom humor or boob jokes, you should probably go elsewhere.) H2Vista - Achievements Supported
In an official press release from Microsoft at CES, there's a comment about Halo 2 Vista, and its Live capabilities:

"Halo® 2" for Windows Vista (Microsoft Game Studios/Bungie Studios) will also support Live, including enabling Windows gamers to communicate with Xbox Live gamers and earn Achievements in the famed "Halo 2" campaign - a first for any "Halo" title on any platform.

Heh - will this convince Achievement-happy gamers who might otherwise have passed on this release to upgrade to Vista after all? (Louis Wu 14:28:25 UTC)

Video commentary from Defy at MLG
Over at MLGPro.com, you can find player match commentary from Defy, in video form. (Heh - was probably filmed a while back; he starts by saying it's a match between top-rated Final Boss and his own second-rated team... been a while since Carbon hasn't been in one of those two spots.) Halo Base interviews Cody Miller
Legend, from Halo Base, sent word about an interview with Cody Miller, the Halo world speedrunning champion (heh). It's primarily a discussion of his 3 and a half hour Legendary No-Deaths run that won this year's Twin Galaxies challenge - it's a fascinating read! (The Halo Base staff confused Cody with Mike Miller at one point, and Cody didn't correct them directly, but otherwise, they got it right on.) It's available in both English and German - read the one that's easier for you! (Louis Wu 21:00:15 UTC)
