I should print that... for my nephew
Wow. ManKitten posted a bunch of scans from a coloring book he made in one of his illustration classes last year. They're just from screenshots - but they're beautifully clean. I'm lovin' em. (I'd love to see the hi-res versions he mentions...) Update: ManKitten sent along those higher-res scans, and I've posted the whole lot in a single post; swing by to see what's worth grabbing! Too many planes in too few hours
I'm back - thanks to Ding for minding the store while I was gone. I did a pretty silly thing (though not one i regret for a second) - I went on a spur-of-the-moment trip across the US to attend the moving-in party Bungie was holding at their new digs in Kirkland, WA. (We've mentioned the move a couple of times - you can check our news for more info.) As I mentioned in a forum post last night, I was pretty darned impressed with the new space; it's gorgeous, well-thought-out, spacious, and productivity-enhancing. And such. Anyway, I'm home, and though I'm taking the evening off to attend a function with my wife, I WILL be doing my best to catch up on all news since Friday - probably tomorrow. For those who missed it, there was a Weekly Update posted at B.net last night, as usual - as of 3 pm yesterday afternoon, there were over 8500 Hurricane Katrina shirts sold, for a Red Cross donation total of over $120,000. WOW. (I got a look at some of the auction items that will be made available soon - man, I hope these go for what they're worth, because that will be a LOT of money.) There's also info on the Halo movie, music, stuff they won't talk about, and Matchmaking playlists. And of course, a Mister Chief piece - in fact, one you'll be able to bid on soon. Go read! Bow chicka bowwow...
Red vs Blue Episode 58 has officially kicked off Season 4 - it's now online for both sponsors (in Hi-res) and the general public (in low-res). Caboose is smarter than he looks. (Not much, but...) And Tucker... Tucker shows his true colors. 4:22, a great start to the season. 10 - 43.5 mb, depending on flavor. (Louis Wu 12:24:07 UTC)

Now THAT is amazing.
We've mentioned the Twin Galaxies Legendary Run competition a couple of times before - yesterday, Cody Miller posted on our forum that he'd completed the challenge: Halo 2 on Legendary, with no deaths. All I can say is... wow. Read his post for details. (Louis Wu 19:50:25 UTC)

Launch Line Ep 1 - Blood Gulch
Wow. TheGhost posted a vid on our forum - he's modified multiplayer grenades in HaloCE to act a lot like campaign grenades... and he uses them to perform some amazing launches on Blood Gulch. I liked this so much I'm hosting both his original WMP9 version (26.4 mb), and a new QT version (27.4 mb). Grab this and be amazed. I was. (Louis Wu 00:05:21 UTC)

Greasemonkey Web Linker
Wow. PEZ has adapted an existing script for Firefox that, when installed in your browser, will add links to any bungie.org or bungie.net page that contains keywords with corresponding pages on the Halowiki.net website. If this doesn't make a lot of sense, go read the page he's put up about it. I just installed the Greasemonkey plugin and his web linker script... and both Bungie.net and bungie.org just got a whole lot more linked for me. (The new links to halowiki content are differentiated from existing links by a dotted red underline - so you'll know which ones are ones we put there, and which ones are supplementary info.) Cool! (If you don't use Firefox - any platform - this is useless to you.) (Louis Wu 13:18:12 UTC)

The Retail Game
Wow. If you're a gamer (at least in the US, but likely this stuff holds true worldwide), you owe it to yourself to read this series of articles. Not specifically Halo-related... but definitely eye-opening. Thanks, Deanero. (Louis Wu 21:06:07 UTC)

Halo 2 is G-Phoria King
Wow. As we mentioned a couple of weeks ago, Bungie was up for 7 honors this year in G4TV's G-Phoria awards - the ceremony took place last night (though it won't be aired for another couple of weeks), and Bungie swept all 7 of those categories! Nice! Gamespot's got an article with more details - thanks to altodarknight, who was beaten for the heads-up by Google News Alerts by only a couple of hours. (Louis Wu 15:20:33 UTC)

One Ugly Noob
Wow... this is one of the odder Halo-related sites I've run across. Jim Sinicropi pointed us to WannaPartyUp.com, a site devoted to collecting Halo 2 postgame lobby conversations from Xbox Live. They range from run-of-the-mill insultfests to really bizarre comments. Everything's in mp3 format. (Louis Wu 14:54:20 UTC)

Lots of pretty pictures
Wow... that took a LOT longer than I'd expected - but the Wallpaper queue has been cleared out. 23 entries - 38, if you count all variants. Some are amazingly good. These have built up over the past two months in our uploads folder, our email, the forum... go see what you can find! (Be sure to check the ones you like - some have color and style variants hidden on the display page.) (Louis Wu 00:12:28 UTC)

Now that's a good lookin' Chief!
Chris Bryan continues his rendering efforts on the Master Chief - you'll find a test render in this post, and another in this one. All I can say is... wow. (Louis Wu 20:31:03 UTC)

Zee Smack, she eez coming!
Wow. Go check out Bungie.net - there's a new article up, explaining how tomorrow, July 20, Autoupdate 4 will be released - if you've got modded content on your box, and you connect to Live, you'll be banned from matchmaking. Period. Permanent, no appeals. You've been warned... (There's more info, including details - go read. And comment on our forum!) (Louis Wu 22:54:44 UTC)

War of the Species
One film that didn't make it through the MPRRS recently was called 'War of the Species' - most reviewers liked it, but a couple gave it low-enough scores that it didn't clear the passing hurdle. However, one of the reviewers liked it enough to offer hosting on his own - NINJ4, of the HBO Forerunners clan, has made it available on his site. 9.7 mb, WMP9 format. It uses Halo 2 cutscenes from the Cutscene Library combined with a soundtrack from the War of the Worlds trailer - it's different than the one we mentioned here (which is unfortunately no longer available). Nice scene choices, in my opinion. Update: this has now been mirrored by trigger119 at Halomachinima.com. Thanks! Update 2: ShadowX pointed out that his video IS still available - you can find links to copies at GameTrailers in this forum post. Grab it, and compare the two! (Louis Wu 19:51:15 UTC)

Happy Fourth of July!
Wow. A fitting place to take a break from Halo updates for the July 4 weekend... Dark Helmet released a Halo vid showing some truly amazing hog launching on the level Halo. If there's demand, I'll put up a QuickTime version - but for now, it's 37 mb, WMP9 format. And very, very nicely done. (Louis Wu 18:16:20 UTC)

Soundtrack news - and it ain't great
Wow... this is a little disturbing. A couple of days ago, sh33p asked, on our forum, about the Halo 2 Soundtrack, volume 2 - and when it might be coming out. His guess was that it would be released with the map pack next week - but Excalibur quoted a forum post from Marty himself on the Marty Army forum (not viewable by the public, so there's no point in linking to it), suggesting that this wouldn't happen. Since then, that private forum thread has received ANOTHER ominous note:

70 minutes worth in 12 movements (suites if you will). I just hope MS lets it happen...

I wonder how many people would care if it never came out?

(Um, lots.) He hopes MS will let it happen? What does THAT mean? More when we hear about it... but I, for one, would be REALLY sad to find that this product had been cancelled. (No, it's not time for a mass email campaign - yet.) (Louis Wu 10:06:10 UTC)

Film Oasis Overviews - Relic
As promised, the Hi-Res Film Oasis flythrough/overview of Relic is up for your enjoyment - man, I love the timing in this one. Marty's music is SO well incorporated... wow. And the imagery and camera work give you a fantastic sense of the epic feel of this map for CTF games. Go grab a copy! (Louis Wu 22:43:28 UTC)

Violence Isn't The Answer
Wow. I simply couldn't pass this up. Bonekin posted a video entitled "Violence Isn't The Answer" - it's a full Rumble Pit Training game of Foundation King, in which Bonekin wins by a healthy margin... without firing a single shot or meleeing a single opponent. Zero kills, zero assists, zero shots fired, playing on a level where the hill doesn't move, and is normally a grenade death trap... but he took the match by more than a full minute. Pacifism... the choice of a new generation. (Louis Wu 11:03:23 UTC)

The Studio Stunt
Wow. So a couple of months ago, the rumor making the rounds was that a Halo script was being written for the big screen by Alex Garland, who wrote The Beach and 28 Days Later. And then we heard nothing. Until today. Defamer has a piece that says that couriers dressed up in Master Chief armor have been bringing the script around to all the major studios to be read (and bid on) today. If we get word on how this turns out, we'll be sure to let you know. Update: Looks like it didn't go over so well... an updated blog entry at Defamer suggests that the script... well, is not so good. Thanks, Anton P. Nym. (Louis Wu 01:30:19 UTC)

Oh. No. What shall we do?
Wow. Sometimes you just have to be scared for the future of journalism. There's an article at Channelnewsasia.com about videogame addiction, and how it's 'America's newest social scourge'... and it quotes statistics from the website of MAVAV, Mothers Against Videogame Addiction and Violence. (MAVAV, you might remember, was a hoax website, put together as a school project by David Yoo in 2002.) Oh, how I miss the days when journalists actually CHECKED their sources... Thanks to Funkmon for the heads-up. (Louis Wu 18:35:46 UTC)

Halo Cutscene Library Opens
Wow. It's taken an inordinately long time to prepare - and for that I offer abject apologies - but as of today, the Halo Cutscene Library here on HBO begins to be built. (The Halo 2 Cutscene Library has been online for several months now.) Today, we offer you the opening scene from Pillar of Autumn, as well as a film containing all four versions of Sarge's speech to the marines (depending on difficulty). If you're on a high-bandwidth connection, you can grab the 640x480 versions, in either QuickTime or WMP9 formats... and for those on slightly slower connections, we're also offering 320x240 versions (in both formats). At the moment, we've got a pair of mirrors for each film, but we're happy to add any other mirrors; if you'd like to host these yourself, simply send us the link and we'll add it to the page. Enjoy! MPRRS - A Status Report
Wow. The Movie Peer Review Rating System turns one month old today - and I think it's surpassed our hopes for it already! In the past 30 days, our volunteer reviewers have rated 79 films, passing 21 of them - just over a quarter. That SERIOUSLY decreases the amount of watching I, personally, have to do - which was the impetus for the system in the first place. Several movies have been submitted more than once - the creator took the feedback given by the reviewers and improved the quality of the offering, often resulting in a passing grade the second time through. This was goal two of the system - to improve the overall quality of released materials. Review time hovers around 12 hours these days - a VAST improvement from the days or even weeks that movies once languished in our uploads folder, waiting for me to find time to download and watch them. And the system continues to improve. Our recent call for volunteers netted another 10 (soon to be 12, I think) recruits, with a rather large reserve for the next call. (If you emailed us this week about becoming a reviewer, and you haven't heard from us, sit tight; we now have your name in the standby pool, and the next time we need a batch of volunteers, you guys are first on the list.) We've begun to see videos submitted not for hosting, but simply for feedback from an organized system; we're fine with this, as long as you understand that what you're getting is just feedback. The behind-the-scenes tools continue to improve, as well, thanks to Cybrfrk; reviewers have access to their body of reviews, and can look for unexpected (or unwanted) trends, and correct them, if need be. All in all, this system should help EVERYONE interested in the Halo movie scene - content creators, viewers, hosts. We're thrilled by the enthusiasm, and hope you're happy with the results thus far! Sometimes, the hype is accurate.
Wow. This is a little off-topic... but not really. I've spent the morning running some tests with QuickTime 7, and the new H.264 codec. It blows away EVERYTHING I've used up to this point - I'm seriously considering making it the new 'default' QuickTime codec for HBO-released movies. (QuickTime 7 is a free download for all, though if you use QT6 Pro, you'll have to pay for a new Pro license.) This is mostly a heads-up. (Louis Wu 14:35:53 UTC)

Turf Walkthrough Now Up for All
Wow. Guess yesterday was a vacation day around here... sorry about the lack of news. First up: Red vs Blue released the fourth (and last) of their new map walktrhroughs - the WMP9 versions (high and low res) can both be found on their video downloads page; all are open to the public. We've also put up hi-res (15.9 mb) and lo-res (4.1 mb) QuickTime versions, for those that would rather use that. And it seems that the lo-res Sanctuary version I mentioned yesterday never actually got uploaded; it's there now. Apologies. (Louis Wu 12:12:55 UTC)

Major MLG Changes due to Auto-Update
There are a couple of important news items over at MLGPro.com for folks who play in their tournaments. The first points out that having the MLG Online League actually start competition the night the auto-update comes out might cause some headaches... so they've pushed the leagues back a week for folks to get used to the changes. (Thanks, Clan Fire When Ready.) The second warns anyone heading to MLG Orlando next week to NOT allow the Auto Update onto their Xbox, since the update will NOT be supported at the tournament. (All SUBSEQUENT tourneys will use it - but this one is so close that it seemed unreasonable to expect folks to change their playstyle overnight.) For practicing between Monday and the 23rd, they suggest XBox Connect. Wow... makes me glad I'm not organizing this stuff! (Louis Wu 13:16:08 UTC)
