MC plays C-S
Whoa - Halo in Counter-Strike... nearly there! Check out the images of strykerwolf's latest work in this forum post. I just... wow. (Louis Wu 16:49:49 UTC)

Halo Symbology, on a platter
Wow. Over the past couple of years, there have been a number of posts concerning the various symbols visible in Halo (and a theory or two)... but never have they all been put together in so pretty a format as Team 7HR33 has done. Check it out! (We'll be adding this to the Halo Story page in the near future, hopefully.) Speculation as to meaning may begin! (Warning: these could be considered spoilers, to some.) I want that Engineer!
Wow. TheDarkRaven13 went to the trouble of transcribing the entire EGM interview with Jason Jones, and posting it to the IGN forums. Some good stuff in there! (You finally get the other half of the 'I would have been your daddy' quote...) Thanks to gdnt for pointing it out. (Louis Wu 01:41:08 UTC)

Massive Review Boost
Wow. Dan Rudolph pointed out this page at Game Rankings, containing a list of 40 Halo reviews, a whopping 11 of which weren't on our Reviews page. We've added them now... and placed a running aggregate score at the top of the page. (Halo currently holds a 95.2% rating over those 55 reviews.) Later tonight we'll add some extra screenshots, and a pair of movies, found on the new pages. (Louis Wu 21:57:01 UTC)

First Halo Commercial at AdReview
Wow. Thanks to Mike Flacy, who was the first to send us word of the first Halo ad - it's linked to this column, which tears into gamers as a bunch of 'absolute freakin' morons'. Don't mind the insults - watch the trailer. It's tiny, and in streaming Real format... but it's pretty astounding. (There's already a decent-sized thread on our forum about it...) Arny Staten lays it down
Joseph Staten stopped in to rag on Marty's anility, and to second Marty's suggestion that you ignore (if you can) the Gamespot movies, to keep from becoming jaded. He also, almost as an aside, passed along the tidbit that the Certification that Microsoft is putting Halo through at the moment is a two-week process... so that Gold Master isn't as close as we thought. Hmm... two weeks... started on the 16th, or so... that means assuming no problems, they've got just over two weeks for manufacturing and distribution of at least 350,000 DVDs. Wow. (That number, btw, came from Ed Fries' estimation that 70% of Xbox preorders include Halo, coupled with a WAG of 500,000 units available at launch.) (Louis Wu 02:06:05 UTC)

Departing Twilight... worth the read
Wow. Go read Gordi's latest story, 'Departing Twilight', the second chapter of his as-yet-untitled series. This one's good. (Be sure to comment on it, and other Fan Fiction, so that authors can get a feel for how their work is percieved.) (Louis Wu 18:17:41 UTC)

How much do YOU see?
Wow. I can't remember when a single screenshot was subjected to the sort of scrutiny that the 'Cortana shot' is enduring... there are threads on our forum, at Rampancy.net, the Marathon's Story page, Battleground: Halo, and probably a few other places around the net. Add your thoughts to the discussions! (Or simply marvel at the effort going in to the analysis of one single screenshot...) (Louis Wu 15:03:50 UTC)

Interview Video not to be missed
Wow. Go visit the new Microsoft Halo site, hit the Cortana Transmission link, and watch the the Interview Video. It's in .wmv format and painful on a mac (can anyone convert this to a downloadable version?)... but it's amazing. Almost 7 (!) minutes of banter between Marty O'Donnell and Joe Staten, with all sorts of new footage, backstory, information about gameplay... a goldmine. (Louis Wu 20:19:11 UTC)

X-Day at IGN
Wow. Yesterday was X-Day. Microsoft stopped by the offices of IGN as well as Gamespot...and not one, but four IGN staff writers wrote up their impressions. Attitudes can be summed up in one word - awed. Lots and lots of spoilers here... but lots and lots of info for those starved for Halo details. Story details, gameplay details... go read it. Wow. (Thanks to CrimsonT for the heads-up in our forum.) (Louis Wu 11:09:22 UTC)

Hi-res versions of OXBM images at IGN
Wow. Xbox.ign.com has posted hi-res versions of the images that appeared in the OXBM magazine preview included in last month's PC Gamer and this month's NextGen magazine. These are clean versions - no text from the article; the only overlays are IGN's stamps. Check 'em out! (Thanks to Charthepirate for pointing them out on our forum.) (Louis Wu 20:51:09 UTC)

The Ring Gets Built
Wow. Ian Mankowski, who has submitted a few pieces of artwork to HBO in the past, drops another spectacular work in our laps. Titled 'Under Construction', it shows the building phase of the Halo - wild. Check it out in our Miscellaneous Art section. (Louis Wu 16:51:23 UTC)

Halo on BBC
Wow. Thanks to fAt1, of MPZ Halo, who pointed us to a pretty nice mainstream press mention of Halo - the BBC ran a piece on how the Xbox is challenging the PS2, and Halo is one of two Xbox games shown in play (and the only one mentioned by name). The 2 minute long video (sorry, only a few seconds of Halo) is available here in Real Media format. (Louis Wu 10:23:40 UTC)

The skull's getting teeth
Wow. You'd think that they'd take a break after E3... just to calm down. (I suppose since the actual programmers didn't even GO to E3, it's understandable that they didn't... but it's still surprising.) This week's Halo Update is over at Rampancy.net... and it's chock-full of goodies. New multiplayer options, a new team member, more effects than you can shake a stick at, and some PID-like wounded, information-toting Marines. Go read till you drool! (Louis Wu 02:28:17 UTC)

Movie goodness coming soon
Wow. Sometimes you just wanna see the game. Freewill filmed all the Xbox goodness last night at Bungie Fanfest V - we've been rendering the movies all night. There are three of 'em, and two should be up soon on both the Bungie Sightings page and the bungie.org E3 200l coverage page - but the biggest one will need mirrors before we can touch it. It's 60 megs, and shows 13 minutes of solo gameplay, with some focus on various weapons. If you've got a big pipe, drop us a line - when the list is big enough, we'll let the mirror sites grab the film, then put it up here, as well. (It's still a bit away from even being finished rendering - but we'll do our best to check mail from the show floor in a couple of hours.) If we can't get any mirrors, we're gonna have to pass on posting this - it's just too big for our puny T1. (The two that are going up will probably crush us.) In fact - any sites willing to mirror the OTHER two movies are welcome to do so, provided they give b.org credit for the film. (These, too, we'll leave up until the pipe collapses under its own weight - if no mirrors step forward, we'll have to take 'em down when access gets too slow.) (Louis Wu 17:38:19 UTC)

Jason Jones Interview at GSUK
Wow. Gamespot UK scored an exclusive interview with Jason Jones this week... there's a lot of good stuff in there.

GSUK: How has Halo's focus changed since last E3?

JJ: For a long time we were very focused on a very cinematic third-person network experience on the PC though some people might say those words are mutually exclusive. What we boiled it down to sometime after last E3 was a much more first-person experience because we're primarily interested in the action and a little bit less in the cinema. We've really got down to work on the AI, not only how you'd play against it, but how it would assist you too. Like it's really fun to drive around with that guy who just hoses people with the chain gun.

Go read the whole thing - it'll make you happy. (Thanks to Laura Stobart of Gamespot UK and to Massa, of Halo Network, for the heads-up.) (Louis Wu 12:53:33 UTC)

Hi-res shots, preview at DR
Wow. Daily Radar has the shots, as well... but they're HUGE. 1920x1440 pixels. You want Hi-res, you got hi-res!!! The preview they go with is worth a read, too...

The gameplay seems to be developing as quickly as the graphic improvements. The world is now populated with an interesting and imaginative assortment of alien varmints, many bent on your destruction. The single-player game is awe-inspiring, taking you all around the gigantic artificial ring-shaped world on a quest to defeat an alien race known as The Covenant. You'll engage them in straight-out blasting duels, attack Metal Gear-style in complete stealth, or even commandeer heavily armed vehicles to launch more destructive attacks (those vehicle modes switch to a third-person view).

Go read about it! (Louis Wu 21:17:01 UTC)

Xbox demoed at MSU
Wow. Microsoft demoed the Xbox at Michigan State University this evening, and we got not one, but two reports on what was said! There are some interesting tidbits in there... you should read both reports. And thanks to ironhorse and Fred Sharp for sending 'em in! (Louis Wu 05:30:03 UTC)

Serious details from a Sili guy
And more - SiliconDream weighs in with a pretty nice roundup, posted to the R.net forum here. (Where are all the b.org reports, that's what I wanna know?) Separate pistols for the player and the standard Marine, visual character variations between unit classes, evasive dives and rolls as part of the engine AI... and a playable build the next time we see it (maybe at E3). Wow. (Louis Wu 14:34:43 UTC)

Second Covenant rifle, revisited
Wow... you think you've gone through every screenshot ever released a million times... you think there's nothing left to find. You're wrong. :) Khaine pointed out to us that the second covenant rifle, which has been discussed recently on our forum, has, indeed, been seen fired... almost 8 months ago! We've put together a quick page to show what's currently known about this gun (minus the four frames in the Incite movie - check our Weapons Rundown for details on that). Thanks for the heads-up, Khaine! (Louis Wu 16:02:38 UTC)

Xbox 360 looks (barely) at Halo
Wow. This blows me away. Xbox 360, an Xbox news site, has recently (December 16, 2000) put up a preview of Halo. Given the date, and the focus of the site, you'd think they had current info, right? You'd be wrong. The few screenshots up are all using the pre-E3 models, the background (while nominally accurate) is all a year or more old... ah, well, to be expected from a review that promises

While no official list of weapons is available, several of them have been seen in action, and yes, one of them is a rocket-launcher.

I'm wondering if this article is a harbinger of a wave of under-researched pieces... was the early press Halo got going to be a hindrance? (Louis Wu 16:01:01 UTC)

Fansite precedes subject
Wow. Talk about quick... yesterday, Josh Inglima, aka 3of9, a regular to the R.net community forum, registered islandfour.org:

IslandFour.org is here to provide news, rumors, gossip and anything that seems somewhat related to the new gaming company Island Four.

OK, so it may seem a little premature to launch a news site for a company that isn't even officially named...but I have a good feeling about this one.

Now THAT, my friends, is confidence in a new company. Today, NetSol's database was updated to reflect that Nathan Bitner registered islandfour.com. Islandfour.net is still available. Thanks to Pallor for the heads-up. (Louis Wu 19:29:18 UTC)

Xbox, Xbox... that's not an Xbox
Wow... somehow we missed this last week, but it seems an image has been making the rounds, purportedly a leaked shot of an Xbox. Daily Radar has gotten word from Carrie Cowan, PR manager for Microsoft's Game Division, that this is totally false. Ack... by the time we hear the rumors, they've been disproved! (Louis Wu 03:30:43 UTC)

Fan Fiction section updated (again)
Wow... and another one. Chris Cox has sent in a story told from the Covenant side... a refreshing change. (Nicely written, too.) As Chris said,

Later entries might be decyphered and uploaded in the future, assuming this doesn't suck :)

We think there should be more... how about you folks? Check our Fan Fiction section for 'The Warrior'. (Louis Wu 21:07:05 UTC)

Wow. Three new Halo stories in one day. Neil Grattan has submitted part 2 of his Sniper story... with part 3 coming soon. Go check it out in our Fan Fiction section! (Louis Wu 19:38:37 UTC)
