Identity Theft - Subnova Style
It was just a matter of time... Boxer points out that the latest Subnova.comic totally rips off - um, pays homage to Stuntmutt's One One Se7en. Wow. It could even BE a One One Se7en... except it's not here. Check it out. (Louis Wu 18:55:32 UTC)

Halo Armor - almost ready!
Wow. We got mail from Webshift, one of a team of what looks to be pretty talented folks. They've got a site called 'NightMare Armor', and if you click on the Gallery link, you'll see some astounding pics of Halo armor. There's a Store link (currently empty), which suggests they might be selling this stuff before too long... Whoa. (Louis Wu 22:07:51 UTC)

Wow. Just... wow.
Okay, so this one's WEIRD. Late last week, we got mail from Billy Oliva, talking about a bizarre glitch in Truth and Reconciliation (the third campaign level). Right after entering the ship, he came across a stack (literally) of covenant, piled up against a door, waiting to attack. he sent screenshots... but they were small, and not great, quality-wise. I held off, because I wanted to see if I could reproduce this. 24 hours later, we received ANOTHER mail, this time from AfroRyan, claiming to have found the same thing, in the same place. I was really suspicious, because not only did he send similar pictures, but they were the same (non-standard) size, and with the same filenames as those sent by Billy. (Afro, I apologize for not believing you. :) ) Then, 24 hours later, Ben Roth posted pictures he found on the Gearbox forums, showing THE SAME THING. Both Billy and AfroRyan sent in saved games... but it took me until today to find time to reinstall 1.03 (1.031 hosed saved games, so I couldn't use them). I made films from both saves - but the one you'll see came from AfroRyan's save, because he had TWO piles of baddies, not just one. I took much more footage than can be seen in this film... but most of it is useless; if you get too close to the piles, framerates drop into the low single digits, you can't tell you've thrown grenades until they explode (usually ON you), and there's no way to manouver. The save I was given was on Easy - you'll see why that's a GOOD thing after you watch the movie. Here's the movie; 45 seconds worth, enough to show you some out-there piles o' baddies. It's QuickTime format, 640x480 (so you have a good view), and weighs in at just over 10 mb. You can also grab AfroRyan's profile (with the savepoint inside) - 2.1 mb - if you want to play with it yourself. (You MUST work with HPC 1.03, not 1.031, to use this. Drop the unzipped folder into your savegames folder, and you're set to go.) Thanks to both these guys - Billy was first with the notice, but again, his bucket-o-covies was smaller, so I didn't use it. I'm guessing something was accidentally changed during the 1.03 patch development process... because I saw no reports of ANYTHING like this before now. (Louis Wu 00:57:05 UTC)

Santa Claws - moist.
Wow. Yesterday was spent at a Halo lanfest in New York, hosted by the gracious Miguel Chavez at the Selkirk Gallery in Manhattan. I'm sure there'll be some writeups soon, and nukedude got some pretty good video... but there's a game I want to point out: it was team oddball, rockets, on Hang em High, with one ball and 15 minutes needed to win. The kill numbers were ASTOUNDING. Here was the screen I was playing on (40k) - and I'm adding this one because Jynx, the high kills guy, didn't have enough balltime to make the first one. I'll be slowly working my way through piled-up mail and forum stuff over the course of the day, in between Christmas preparations and dealing with the new snow... but I wanted to say that even though I didn't get home until after 3:30... it was a blast. An absolute blast. (Louis Wu 15:24:51 UTC)

Now THAT'S grandeur.
XLNC posted three spectacular screenshots today - 1600x1200, no HUD, no weapons. (He explained how he did it in this post, if you want to make your own.) Wow. (Louis Wu 15:39:00 UTC)

Gearbox loses one.
Wow. Dave Mertz, lead designer on Halo PC for Gearbox, resigned as of yesterday. Details can be found in this forum thread on Gearbox's forum. Hmm... I wonder what this means for the 1.03 patch, or the Editing Tools package? Thanks to progamerz for the heads-up. (Louis Wu 22:17:19 UTC)

A Rocket Launcher You Can Hold
Wow. Master Chief Cutter has put together a full size rocket launcher. It doesn't actually shoot... but that's probably a GOOD thing. It's over 4 feet long, and there are a bunch of blurry pictures on his website here. (I grabbed local copies, so someone should drop me a line if this dies; we'll put up a mirror here.) The lengths fans will go to... Update: Local copies are here. (Louis Wu 14:50:35 UTC)

$70K... for playing Halo?
CPL has announced its Summer 2004 Extreme Championship, with a $70,000 Halo PC CPL-Assault tournament. Wow. 4000 players (it's bring-your-own-computer), July 28th-August 1st in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Thanks to SketchFactor, over at Bungie.net, for pointing it out. (Louis Wu 20:48:56 UTC)

To Screen or Not To Screen
241 new screenshots have been added to the Screenshots Database, covering all reviews listed to date and bringing us to the present. This brings the total number of Halo PC shots (1279) to within striking distance of all the Xbox Halo shots to date (1312) - wow. (Louis Wu 17:29:42 UTC)

Cold hard cash for modding
Whoa. Halo Maps Mods and More is offering $1000 for the best modded map submitted by December 10. These are not the same guys as you'll find at Halomods, I don't think. And there's zero information (that I could find, anyway) about the rules for this competition. But wow... $1000 is a lot of money. (If they follow through, of course.) Posted on our forum by ToolNIN. (If you have any questions, be sure to add 'em to that thread.) (Louis Wu 20:19:05 UTC)

Because we hate to see goodies go to waste...
Wow. It looks like folks have pretty much given up on the Great Halo Scavenger Hunt... and that makes me sad. There's a post on our forum that MIGHT summarize what the problem is - but I know that the puzzle is solveable, since several people have solved it already. So here's the deal: we're gonna give you one of the trinkets. This was the first one found, and it was posted on our forum at least twice, so I don't feel too bad giving it away. If you visit Battleground: Halo, and stop by their FAQ, a text search on the page will turn up a question that isn't linked at the top. It's down in the last section, and it asks 'What is the fifth trinket?' and the answer is 'East'. They're not all in plain sight like that - but (with a couple of exceptions) they all mention 'trinket', which should make things a bit simpler. Remember - you're looking for 10 of these, and you're looking on Halo-related websites for them. In the process of finding them, you should ALSO find clues about what to do with them. (At the start, don't worry about what to do with them - just keep track of them. It really will become clearer.) Only 3 of the 28 prizes have been claimed at this point... there is still a LOT of schwag to grab! (Louis Wu 10:05:47 UTC)

MS Halo Support Site Live
Wow. Don't ask me how... but somehow I missed the official Microsoft Halo PC Support site going live late last week. Boatloads of info about video issues, sound issues, framerate issues... go read it. (Louis Wu 00:01:39 UTC)

Wow. Patched before most even have it.
Speed is everything. The Halo v1.01 patch is already available for download from WorthPlaying.com. It's 3.6 mb, but WP doesn't know what, exactly, it addresses. Thanks to Tocki, of Halo Orbit, who's already put up a mirror. More details when we have them. Update: It's mirrored at Halo Universe (in Germany), as well. Thanks, Marc! (Louis Wu 14:35:01 UTC)

New Campaign Screenshots at AVault
Wow. Adrenaline Vault seems to be first out of the gate with new screenies from Halo PC; I'm guessing this is a near-final or final version, since no recent betas that I know of included Assault on the Control Room. 28 shots (one is actually from 343 GS's opening cutscene) at a gorgeous 1280x1024. Thanks to Target4Hire for pointing them out. (Louis Wu 02:07:24 UTC)

Halo - played by masters.
Wow. Sir Dan points out a link to a vid (streaming WMV format) of the final round of Halo50K, TDT vs DM, CTF on Battle Creek. It's 5:16 long, and shows the entire match (3 captures). Video is hosted by Video CD Productions, and shows some truly impressive teamwork... check it out. (Louis Wu 14:31:20 UTC)

Long-overdue egg update
Wow. It's taken a LOONNG time, but the Easter Eggs page is finally up-to-date; two eggs (the Megg, and the Chinese seven on the pistol) have been added, and one egg (the Gametypes screen, as corrected by ZechsGX recently) has been updated. Dunno why I hadn't done this before... (Louis Wu 16:15:44 UTC)

Very Late 'Paper
Wow. It's been 11 days since we've updated our art sections. We've received 11 desktop images in that time for the Wallpaper section. Sorry for the delay! Update: Make that 10. We've yanked one because it's a tweaked version of an existing wallpaper - the author went to the trouble of asking the original creator for permission, was turned down, and SUBMITTED IT ANYWAY. People - don't do stupid stuff like this. (Louis Wu 22:16:01 UTC)

That Grunt head rocks.
Wow... these costumes are great. Cosplay.com has put up a bunch of pictures from Comic Con International, held last month in San Diego... and one group came as Halo characters. Nekomusume has kindly linked to all four relevant pictures in this forum post. (Louis Wu 10:27:02 UTC)

Fer the luv o' Pete...
A long time ago, some screenshots of the Halo Flamethrower (in the Xbox version) floated around the net - speculation from Bungie employees at the time revolved around someone with access to an XDK (Xbox Development Kit), and the willingness to break their Non-Disclosure Agreements. When pushed, the producer of the shots in question backed off - and the matter was dropped. Well, this morning, PfhorSlayer (programmer behind Aquaduct, the Macintosh tunneling app) popped into our forum with some surprising pictures. A couple of hours later, Nick posted more of his own. Nobody in the thread was willing to answer HOW this all happened... and speculation raged about whether this was a hoax or not. This afternoon, BOLL got some info from Phforslayer, and recorded a movie that would be very, very hard to fake. You can't hurt anyone with this (since the code was yanked, there's no damage information), and it looks... unfinished (as well it might be), but it's certainly real. And it was accomplished with just a modded off-the-shelf Xbox (NOT a Dev Kit), and a bit of ingenuity. Wow. (If you have a modded Xbox, Macegac has written up a short tutorial on how to get this for yourself. If you don't have a modded Xbox... please don't ask us how you get one.) Update: BOLL points out that you CAN kill people with the flamethrower... but only if they're in a ghost. (Well, other vehicles might be possible, as well; he and Macegac only tested a ghost.) Oddness continues... (Louis Wu 19:44:05 UTC)

21 pieces (yes, that's 7x3) of Fan Fiction for you today - including one (M31, part 12) which somehow DIDN'T get approved last time around. Get to work:

Halo's auto-aim... up close and personal
Wow. BOLL was trying to capture some footage, but the cameraman was low on health... and wouldn't stand still. Check out the film in this post - it shows how huge a difference there is in the auto-aim boost between a 1-bar player and a full-health player. Now THAT'S a helping hand! (Louis Wu 20:49:12 UTC)

Preorder Halo PC - get cool stuff
Wow. Looks like if you preorder Halo PC at Gamestop, you get a mini Blue Master Chief action figure, free. We're not usually big on preorders... but this one seems like a pretty good deal. Thanks to Jonah for the heads-up. (Louis Wu 19:41:50 UTC)

The Fat Lady has Sung
Wow. That didn't take very long. About 20 hours ago, I posted a note about a contest sponsored by gwdp....to, involving getting in to the separated room on Chill Out. Almost 2 hours ago, Macegac posted a movie (with BOLL's hosting help) showing the completion of that challenge - and this is something that folks on our forum have tried to do, on and off, for almost a year. Guess sometimes it just takes cold hard cash to motivate the hardcore. Nicely done, all around! (Louis Wu 21:39:49 UTC)
