Wow... that's REALLY high.
See... now THIS is why I love the Halo community. Cocopjojo let us know about a way he and a friend had stumbled on getting out of multiplayer levels in Halo... it's ingenious. And the results are pretty darned interesting to look at. (Louis Wu 13:23:29 UTC)

News Summary - Catch-Up Mode
I woke up to a mailbox full of older Google News Alerts - a few dozen messages from Saturday through Tuesday, that all came in together. Much of the news they contained has already been mentioned, but here's a roundup of the interesting tidbits we hadn't gotten to:

  • MSNBC.com has an article about how Halo 3's launch affects average people.
  • Siliconera posts the first part of a retrospective looking back over the launch event in New York (fun pics).
  • Practice Management Blog looks at Halo 3... the Lawyer?
  • The Harvard Crimson has a writeup of a Microsoft-sponsored Halo 3 tournament - those guys were playing for some nice prizes!
  • Unconfirmed Sources has news of a guy who ported Halo 3 to his iPhone. I'm thinking shooting's gonna be a problem...
  • VideoJug has a video containing some basic Halo 3 tips and tricks; if you find yourself more dead than alive, this might be worth watching.

Wow... that's a pretty random collection of bits! (Louis Wu 11:58:35 UTC)

Trot out the 'experts', it's time to bash games again
Wow. I'm as disturbed by the fallacies presented by last week's The Morning Show as GamePolitics is. Someone needs to open a dialogue like this when there HASN'T been a school shooting in the past few days; we need people to be thinking rationally when they're making decisions on concepts like this. Thanks, GryphonOsiris. (Louis Wu 21:32:46 UTC)

Turn down the retardation.
Wow. Sep7imus was faster noticing the Bungie Weekly Update than my RSS feed was. Happy Birthday, Luke and Frankie! (Ya big cheaters!) This one is mostly housecleaning: explaining how the ranking system works (again), working on why the Marathon Man achievement doesn't unlock for everyone, an explanation of Bungie Favorites, some lack of pants, a hint about upcoming downloadable content, a look at the EXP cheating issue, and a clarification about armor permutations. (All those people who said they've unlocked the Recon armor? Bungie says "nope, you haven't.") Don't wanna read it at Bungie.net? Check our Weekly Update Archive. (Louis Wu 23:40:56 UTC)

R.net - keeping me on my toes
Wow... if I don't visit Rampancy.net for a couple of days, I miss a lot. (This is true for you, too - remember that.) Lessee what we got...

I guess that'll teach me to stop by every day! (Louis Wu 15:39:06 UTC)

Custom Female Spartan Statue
Wow. Joseph Ryan pointed us to this one-of-a-kind hand-sculpted Halo statue on eBay; polymer clay, almost 12 inches to the top of the sniper rifle. 10% of the sale price goes to the American Breast Cancer Foundation. Opening bid is $200, you've got just under a week. (Louis Wu 10:47:51 UTC)

Launch Writeups
Wow. So I was going through mail that came to email addresses other than halo@bungie.org, thinking that I'd make a summary of all the news that hadn't gotten posted in the last couple of days before I STARTED posting - but the list is so enormous that I'll never get through it unless I just start. So - I'll do my best to combine like items, but beware the news flood! First up, some release night shenanigans around the country (and the world):

I think we should probably call it a day after those; I'm sure there are HUNDREDS of writeups of local launch things (there were, after all, over 10,000 stores in the US, 1,000 stores in the UK, and uncounted numbers in other countries all open for this event), but we'll say this is representative. Just call him AntiQuixote.
Wow. Jack Thompson is back in court - this time, he's trying to have Halo 3 declared a 'public nuisance' so as to block its release in Florida. Yeah, good luck with that, Jack. Thanks to Ben Ritter for today's dose of surrealism. Update: Ouch. As much as I hate to say it... I'm guilty of a lack of research. I took my writeup for this piece directly from the GamePolitics analysis, rather than reading the full complaint for myself. Jackson doesn't want to block release of Halo 3 in Florida... except as a tactic to force Best Buy to honor the ESRB rating of Mature, and stop selling this game to minors. Since I have no problem whatsoever with that goal (I don't think M-rated games SHOULD be sold to minors - I think their parents need to decide if they should be playing them, and do the buying FOR them), I find myself in the rather uncomfortable position of agreeing with Mr. Thompson (though only in his ultimate goal; I still believe his tactics are absurd). Thanks to Alekat for gently suggesting I might have missed something. Update 2: Gameshout has some more details. (Louis Wu 00:36:30 UTC)

Halo Helmet - High Quality, High Price
The frenzy for high-quality Halo armor continues. (Remember that suit of armor we mentioned on September 11? The auction closed yesterday... for a mind-boggling $21,149.00. I mean... Wow.) Cpl. Fin Aeros points out another auction containing material from the same artist - this time it's just a helmet, and the bidding currently stands at a bit over $1000, with almost 9 days to go. Read up on how he did the work, watch his videos... and if you're wealthier than the average bear, toss in a bid! (Louis Wu 10:32:37 UTC)

A close look at Jasman's Energy Sword
Jasman's Plasma Pistol and Rifle have been news on the toy front for a long time - but until now, I haven't seen a picture (or a price) for the upcoming Energy Sword. BigBadToyStore is preselling all three - but it's the $120 sword that surprises me. They're not promising that this is the final retail price... but even so, wow. Thanks, BARBARIC RAGE. Museum Delivers
Wow. The press for the 'Museum' ad is simply amazing. Joystiq says "we're not sure if we've ever been so moved by a Halo commercial". Ars Technica says it's "stunning". Be A Design Group says it goes way beyond marketing to gamers - It's "emotionally bigger, and almost too big at that" than Halo. I'd agree - with all of these. It's a very powerful piece, and one that has much wider appeal than a game-specific ad. 2OpGaming (thanks, Avateur) and GamesIndustry.biz both have informational articles about the piece itself, that go into greater detail than the simple page at Yahoo. There's also a nice description over at Xbox.com's Believe page - thanks again, Avateur. If you haven't watched this one yet, do so. And show it to your non-Halo-playing friends/family, and see what their reaction is. Update: Hmm... maybe it isn't ALL positive. Delta found this commentary at Canada's National Post - you can't please everyone. Update 2: GhaleonEB pointed out that the full press release (visible at Gamerscoreblog, Kotaku, 2OpGaming) contains a new campaign shot (local mirror). (Louis Wu 19:48:13 UTC)

Taking Leaks Seriously
Wow. Not really sure how to explain this one succinctly. Start at The Hushed Casket, I guess (thanks, Rampancy.net), to learn how a bunch of people got unauthorized access to the Halo 3 Epsilon. Then swing by homicidal insomniac to see the followup - Microsoft banned both the gamertags, AND the Console IDs, of those involved. (Permanent bans on both, invalidating both a $50/year Gamertag and a multi-hundred-dollar console, at least for Live use.) THEN, follow the Xboxic forum thread link in that last article to hear from one of the guys involved - and realize that he's one of those people who buys busted (RROD) consoles, fixes 'em, and resells 'em... but he plays on 'em, first. So know that if you buy a used console, you might just find that it's been permabanned from Live. Oh, so many lessons in one little story! (Louis Wu 19:59:04 UTC)

When Shipping Departments Screw Up
Wow. nash--housewares found a thread on an Italian forum with some pictures that, if they're what they look like, do NOT bode well for keeping Halo 3 secrets until launch day. We're looking into this - but if it turns out to be what it looks like, I'm thinking we'll probably close the forum down for 3 weeks. Starting... really soon. Stay tuned. Update: MGS marketing has confirmed that those pictures are the EMPTY pre-order/promotional boxes. No game discs have shipped to any retailers yet. Thank goodness! (Louis Wu 19:29:26 UTC)

Bioshock vs Halo 3?
Wow. Games Radar has put up an article comparing Halo 3 to Bioshock; according to GR's senior editor, Joe McNeilly, Bioshock pwns (their choice of words) Halo 3 in Story, Setting, Art, Multiplayer (!?!!), and Combat. Go see if you agree. Thanks, Charley117. (Louis Wu 23:00:38 UTC)

Win a Halo 3 360, if you're down under
Wow. If you live in Australia or New Zealand, you need to check this out. Pidgeo is giving away a Halo 3 Special Edition Xbox 360, plus a Halo 3 poster, signed by Frankie and Lars Bakken - all you need to do to win is send your best Halo or Halo 2 gameplay story (100 words or less) to him before September 15. Go read more details at his site. I found this on the Delicate Genius blog. (Louis Wu 12:06:48 UTC)

Wow. Very interesting article about new flame-related weapons in Halo 3 - the flamethrower is IN, and so is the Firebomb! Go read at IGN. Thanks, TheSneak. (The 3D view is great!) Update: Nice call by Flashman - I honestly hadn't noticed the significance of the name. (Louis Wu 23:20:06 UTC)

How do these people get jobs?
Wow. There's a pretty astoundingly rude editorial over at Daily Game today - I can't call it news, because it reads more like a forum rant than anything else. I'm actually sort of surprised to see something like this on a big-name gaming site.

But you, in turn, must fully understand that online co-op was quite the only feature missing from Halo 2 that we wanted in Halo 3. Well, and an ending. Recorded videos? Optional. Shiny, HDR-lit barrels? Optional. New vehicles and weapons? Optional. Give us online co-op, Bungie. Prove to us that you're not so wrapped-up in your own perceived greatness that you actually listen to your consumers.

As one of those consumers, I've got to say that some of those 'optional' features are NOT optional for me - but the difference is, I understand that I speak for me, whereas the author of this piece believes he speaks for the Halo community. (There's nothing wrong with making your wishes known. DEMANDING features in an upcoming game - with an empty threat of brand abandonment behind the demand, and with snide comments about how Bungie's not actually doing anything except eating pizza in their studio - is just plain foolish.) This Online Coop thing is making me crazy.
Wow. Before I get to actually posting news today, I would like to beg for a little more rationality in the gaming press. I simply CANNOT BELIEVE how many articles are out there this morning that say "Bungie has cancelled online Coop!" (To be fair, there are a number of sites that present the news as a possibility - which it is, of course - and some sites, like Kotaku, who are even reasonable about it all - but for the most part, it's all gloom and doom this morning.) The facts: this information is coming from the September issue of EGM - an issue that isn't even printed yet. Someone at the printer grabbed unbound pages and snapped blurry photos of them - EGM is taking a HUGE hit for this, and I hope that when this issue hits the stands in early August, folks buy it, because they've been robbed. But that's really a side issue, I guess. The comments on online coop, made by Frankie to the EGM crew, were made a month ago - they were collecting info for this article during the week of June 19. It's POSSIBLE that that particular info is still accurate - but it's equally possible that it's not. (Magazine print deadlines make it hard to keep up on fast-changing info. This is the primary reason there are embargoes on press information; if they didn't exist, magazines could never compete with online sources, because the info would have been published weeks earlier. Bungie does a great job of making sure that what you read in magazines is, for the most part, news to you - but if the subject is a work in progress (like online coop), there's only so much prediction that can go on.) Bottom line: in mid-June, online coop was not working very well. Whether that's changed in the intervening month, we don't know - we won't know until either Bungie makes a public statement (possible, but I wouldn't hold my breath), or Halo 3 is released. What you can't say with any confidence is that "AS OF RIGHT NOW, ONLINE COOP IS OUT" - because that comment is a month out of date. (Louis Wu 13:22:24 UTC)
