Prayer
Wow. OboeCrazy wrote an English Horn solo with some Oboe and experimentation with guitar pedals... and Elnea added some background effects... and the result is haunting. Go listen to 'Prayer', a "Covenant prayer to their Gods for the Great Journey...a prayer essentially for death, and filled with Flood." (It's unlikely that there'll be bandwidth problems, but if there is, we'll be happy to mirror this.) (Louis Wu 15:09:02 UTC)

Tricking Up a Storm
Wow. Ducain pointed out this newspost at High Impact Halo - seems a bunch of crazy HIH tricksters figured out a way to get a vehicle into the Index Chamber in Halo 2's Quarantine Zone. If you're thinking "yeah, so?" read the explanation of how this came about in grumpy's post. That's some pretty serious dedication, there! (Louis Wu 13:40:20 UTC)

Halo 3: It'll beat on your server.
Wow. I think we might have weathered the storm. Last night, we helped Bungie host "Our Favorite Things", a trailer that should pump you up for the Heroic DLC (whether you have it or not) - We served nearly 25,000 copies of it from three separate pipes in the past 12 hours, eating almost a terabyte and a half of bandwidth. I know that some of you went away empty-handed - I'm sorry about that. The load on all three servers is down a bit right now, and the YouTube version Bungie posted last night did, eventually, show up. For those who watched it - what did you think? If you haven't seen the Weekly Update yet (which provided great new pics of Avalanche, details on when you'll hear more about the third new map in the upcoming Legendary map pack, a reminder that Team SWAT is going strong for the weekend on LIVE, and a link to the new Bungie podcast, featuring Chris Butcher, in addition to the movie itself), you should visit Bungie.net and do so (or read it in our Weekly Update Archive). Crazy night! (Louis Wu 13:46:00 UTC)

MS says sorry
Wow. Remember a couple of weeks ago, when Bungie made a bad situation better by sending a huge box of schwag to the guy who'd had his artwork erased when he sent his Xbox in for service? It doesn't end there. Microsoft sent him ANOTHER box of stuff - this one contained a surreal amount of compensation. There's a 360 with signatures from most of the people who signed the first one, plus a bunch of people who didn't (including Bill Gates), plus a load of games, bumper stickers, and more. Me? I think it's a bit overboard... but hey, it's certainly a happy ending for Nathaniel. Thanks to SPARTAN 294 for the heads-up. (Louis Wu 18:40:05 UTC)

Your case was a MESS - I cleaned it up for you.
Wow. This is a sad story - mostly because it didn't have to happen this way. Thanks, Hawty. (Louis Wu 20:13:57 UTC)

Halo 3 Guitar - for sale on eBay
Wow. If you swing by Hawty McBloggy's latest post, you can find a link to one of those Ibanez Xiphos Halo 3 guitars (only 20 were made, and a few were given away during promotions leading up to Halo 3's release) on eBay - you can't really buy one, so if you want one, here's your chance. Take a look! (Louis Wu 21:33:35 UTC)

Weta Goodness
Wow. x1zero pointed out some new (to us) shots at the Weta Workshop website - there are a bunch of action shots, clearly taken from the Halo 3 shorts filming done last year, but there are also a bunch of weapons pics. Go look! (Several of these weapons were seen in a recent Bungie Weekly Update.) (Louis Wu 20:24:58 UTC)

The next ARTFX MC
Wow. SaGA sent us a link to a Japanese site with pics of a new Kotobukiya figure - it's called 'Field of Battle', and it's still pending licensing, but it's gorgeous. Currently aimed at a June release for 9800 ¥ (about $92 US). Awesomeness. (Louis Wu 17:59:56 UTC)

That's not a job I'd take in a million years.
Wow. Here are some guys with ambitious goals. Grant Harrison is the vice president for the integrated consumer experience at Humana, and it's his job to bring health information media to the masses. He knows it's boring, and complicated. His goal? He wants health care providers to make health information and activities "entertaining."

"It should be as fun as playing Halo 3, or watching Flight of the Conchords."

Um... you've got a long road ahead of you, Mr. Harrison. (Louis Wu 15:39:24 UTC)

A second chance at a great poster
Wow. A couple of years ago, we helped Bungie auction off a bunch of cool schwag, with proceeds going to help Katrina victims. One of the items was a Halo 2 poster, signed by the majority of the Bungie team. Final price was $1736.70. It's back up on eBay again, this time with a starting bid of $2500. (The original buyer is selling off a lot of his Halo collectible stuff; hit the 'View seller's other items' link on that page for many joyride figures.) (Louis Wu 19:53:24 UTC)

I'm a coffee man, myself.
Wow. Looks like teabagging - the act, virtual or otherwise, of lowering one's crotch on the face of another - is being blamed on Halo, at least according to one New Jersey school board. Never mind that the practice has existed for far, far longer than Halo's been around... thanks, Charley117, who found it at Kotaku. (Louis Wu 16:39:31 UTC)

Wow. Just... wow. G4's X-Play has a video called 'Tyler Perry's Halo Family Reunion'. Thanks (I think) Grey Wolf. (Louis Wu 12:33:13 UTC)

Gorgeous Halo Artwork
Wow. Brian Curry found a bunch of Halo 3 paper giclée prints (Wikipedia can help if you don't know what giclée is) over at Entertainment Earth - they're gorgeous. Check out Jolly Green ($89, in stock), Prisoner ($89, in stock), Dismount ($110, preorder only), and Chief and Arbiter ($89, out of stock, but orderable). Just... wow. (Louis Wu 19:11:11 UTC)

High Tech Halo (not really)
Wow. Cody Miller converted one of the later cutscenes of the game to ASCII video, with 8-bit mono sound. It's amazing you can even tell what's going on... intriguing just for its WTF factor. (Louis Wu 15:08:14 UTC)

Wow. Voting took a bit of work - but we've whittled down the 127 entries to the Seven on the Seven(teen)th contest to our 7 top choices... you can find the images on the Results page. Congrats to the winners - and to EVERYONE who submitted; almost 50 images got votes from at least one of our dozen judges. (Louis Wu 18:31:03 UTC)

When life gives you lemons, make cubist art
Wow. Thos looks like he might be facing a video card failure in his Xbox 360 - but he's making the best of a bad situation, by snapping some pretty cool screenshots! (Louis Wu 15:29:34 UTC)

MLC works on Halo Armor
Wow. We got pointed to a bunch of pictures at PrintRoom, showing off the work of MLC - he's been doing Star Wars stuff for a long time, and is now getting into Halo armor. Fiberglass, documented to within an inch of its life... check it out! Thanks to Xavier, from the 405th.com, for the heads-up. (Louis Wu 13:01:57 UTC)

The Word on Forged Map News
Wow. Okay, there's no WAY we're going to be able to satisfy everyone's desire to be front-paged with their latest Foundry creations - we've gotten dozens of announcements about map remakes, or fun gametypes, or whatever... our front page just isn't that big. Someone really needs to set up a database somewhere for Forged creations; I realize there are sites like Forge Hub and H3Forge, but there is nothing that lets people upload pictures and descriptions of their maps, that folks can easily search for what they're looking for. More importantly (for this post), we don't have the resources to be that place. You''re welcome to announce your creation on our forum - but please don't ask us to front-page it. Sorry! Custom-Made Spartan at Urban Art Central
Wow. Mike Carson pointed out a 1/6 scale model of a Spartan, custom-created by Eric Barclay, aka callous. Now, we set up a page for callous' work last year - but we had no idea he was this far along at this point. Check it out! (That page will be updated in the not-too-distant future.) Update: the original article seems to have been posted at figures.com - more pics there! (Louis Wu 20:47:40 UTC)

Wired's Halo 3 Supergeek Contest - Winners Announced
Wow. Somehow we totally missed the fact that Wired Magazine was running a Halo 3 Supergeek contest, looking to give away cool schwag to the biggest Halo 3 geek out there. I found out about it today, when they posted the winners. I'm guessing we've got readers that could have cleaned up... (Louis Wu 20:22:54 UTC)

CPL's Winter Tourney purse loses 90% of its value
Wow. You might remember that a few weeks ago, the Cyberathlete Professional League made huge waves by announcing a Halo 3 tournament in December with a one million dollar purse. They've made a few changes, it appears... the one million dollar tournament is being moved to the CPL Summer Event (next July), and the winter tourney now has a $100,000 purse. The announcement suggests that the changes are due to shenanigans involving other professional gaming leagues... hmm. Anyway, just a heads-up in case you were planning on attending. Halo Dialogue Statistics, from the source
So recently, we've been getting a lot of email asking for information about the lines of dialogue recorded for each of the three Halo games; it's unclear to me whether there's a trivia contest going on somewhere, or if everyone just had the same idea at the same time. Either way, it seemed prudent to check with the only folks that could say for sure - the Bungie audio crew. Jay Weinland has all the files on his hard drive, so it was easy enough to look at stats:

  • Halo: 8,087 files produced
  • Halo 2: 21,090 files produced
  • Halo 3: 39,377 files produced

These numbers include alien speech, such as Jackals, Hunters, etc. And Marty wanted to clarify that not all of these are actually triggerable - the numbers that you actually have a chance of hearing are 15-20% below those numbers. Still, even if you can only hear 32,000 of them... 40,000 lines recorded for Halo 3. Wow. (Thanks, guys.) (Louis Wu 21:09:43 UTC)

Sandtrap is not a natural formation.
Wow... Hawty McBloggy speculated about how interesting it might have been to have had Cortana as the final unlockable in Halo 3. Personally, I'm guessing I'd go crazy after a day or so... but it's an intriguing idea. Go let her know what you think! (Louis Wu 09:54:04 UTC)

Jordan117 found another real-world link between Bungie's in-game assets and Africa. This sort of attention to detail (on Bungie's part) is awesome. And on Jordan117's part... wow. (Louis Wu 20:03:44 UTC)
