Old movie resurfaces - longer
Wow. I'm not sure how... but it looks like Xboxyde has gotten hold of (a mediocre version of) the very first E3/Zanzibar vid released. This is the vid that the 20 seconds of hi-res gameplay was cut from during E3 itself. This one's only 320x240, and a bit dark and blurry... but it's 20 minutes long, and 72 mb large, in DivX-encoded AVI format. The Download page at Xboxyde has a direct link (this one's hard to get) and a BitTorrent link (a much better bet). Thanks, Carlos Castillo. (Louis Wu 11:00:14 UTC)

The Zero Shot Revolution Continues
Goatrope continues his quest to blow people away in Vidmaster style... he's completed 343 Guilty Spark, Legendary Difficulty, taking zero shots, and dying zero times. The movie is 11:44 long, in DivX-encoded AVI format, and 32.6 mb large. Nice humility, even. All I can say is... wow. (I'm really, really impressed that he didn't instinctively pull his AR's trigger a few times in the helmetcam room...) (Louis Wu 18:02:45 UTC)

More Images for your Desktop
Wow. We cleared the Wallpaper queue. I can't REMEMBER the last time I could say that. Check the Wallpaper Section for 10 new pieces (14, actually, if you count size variants), including a few really nice creations. Wow. I'd hate to say I was catching up... because you folks would just up the rate of submissions. Hmm... Update: Eep, we yanked one of the images, because it used (without permission) some artwork created by ANOTHER fan. (The original artist asked us to pull it.) If you decide to use artwork you find on the web for your submissions here, you really need to make sure you have permission of the original creator; we take a pretty dim view of IP appropriation. (In most cases, if you find it on HBO, there's an email address associated with the original; if there isn't, you can drop US a note, and we can pass the note along.) Thanks! haloTV headsets - first 6 out
Wow. WhoKnew, a regular on the #hbo IRC channel and a member of Alpha Base, wanted a Plantronics headset so badly that he wrote a song about it, and submitted it to haloTV. They liked it (it's the Video of the Week), and he got his headset. (So did 5 other people, but more randomly.) Nice! (WMP9 format, streaming.) (Louis Wu 14:09:45 UTC)

Good things are coming...
Wow. Got mail from AEG, a PR firm that handles a lot of Microsoft's promotions; there's a BIG contest launching Wednesday, September 15, at 9 am PDT. We don't have a lot of details yet... but I do know it involves Halo 2, and Xbox Live, and as soon as the full contest announcement has been sent out, you'll be able to read all the details here. Stay tuned! Update: There's been a timing change; the announcement will happen at 1 pm PDT, not 9 am. Keep your eyes peeled! (Louis Wu 01:01:15 UTC)

Deviance
WOW. Another really cool Halo-related image on the DeviantArt website - VegasMike (otherwise known as Adam Vehige, who won our Pillar of Art contest last year with a similar image) posted an image called 'Halo 2'. Very, very nice. Thanks to Guardian for finding it. (Louis Wu 04:06:30 UTC)

Halo Stats - Lots of Stats
Wow. BlackOps, of the Imperial Army clan, posted a note on the Gearbox forums, announcing a new (not quite available yet) stats system for Halo PC, based on an open-source Unreal Tournament 2003 stats tracking system. There's a link to their own website, showing you what these stats look like; they're amazingly complete. Check it out! Thanks to MasterGrief for the heads-up. (Louis Wu 03:35:22 UTC)

Zanzibar - it won't go away.
Wow. I hate for the front page to be dominated by a single file - but I guess this one is pretty big. The MLG Zanzibar Halo 2 Mirror page now has quite a few direct download links, if you've had trouble with BitTorrent - and Two Degrees, another peer-to-peer sharing network which made its HBO debut last winter, is back as well. (As of this writing, BitTorrent has served over a terabyte worth of files in about 18 hours - not too bad.) I've also put up a 320x240 version, for folks on slower machines (some computers can't handle 640x480 video), and for those on slower connections, there are representative rounds; you can download either a full 3 minute Offense or Defense round, in either 640x480 or 320x240 sizes. Filesizes on these get as small as about 10 mb, so almost everyone should be able to handle them. (If you've already got the large file, you gain NOTHING by downloading the segments; I just cut them out of there. Please save our bandwidth by NOT downloading, in that case.) If you feel you can mirror any of these versions, go ahead and send the links, we'll add them. mrsmiley, the player in the vid, has also written up his experience over at Halo Babies - and included ANOTHER 8 minute video (WMP9 format, 32.1 mb) which gives some flavor for the day. This will be the last I mention this today - check the Mirror page for new links, if you're missing anything. (Louis Wu 11:37:33 UTC)

Escaped Convict
Wow. Talk about dedication. [-TLG-]Madrox and Monoxide got a Hunter to the bottom of the pit in the middle of the underground cavern in AotCR. How'd they do it? They gave him a ride on a Banshee. Vid is 5.5 mb in WMP9 format, hosted by Madrox. I've put a QuickTime version up on files.bungie.org. (Both versions are a bit hard to see; vid is a tad washed out. You can certainly get the gist, though.) (Louis Wu 23:31:23 UTC)

eBay of Pigs
Wow. I've seen sleazy before, but this is pretty audacious. Some slimeball on eBay was selling a digital copy of Zoe's farewell wallpaper; he removed Zoe's signature from it (though not the bungie.net watermark), and was selling it (in DIGITAL FORM, it's not even a print) as his own work. (He cancelled the auction this morning, 'because of an error in the listing' - but it's still online.) In case it gets pulled, we've put up a local, static (no working links) copy here at HBO. Remember that you can get this for free (from the legitimate artist) over at Bungie.net. Make a note of the seller's name, and be really, really careful what you buy from him. Thanks to Fluffmiester for finding this. (Louis Wu 14:32:04 UTC)

Now all we need is a wolf.
Ducain continues his 'I'm-gonna-get-hogs-EVERYWHERE-on-SC' campaign, with a movie showing how he managed to get three (THREE!) warthogs across the Shaft in Silent Cartographer - along with himself and a marine. WOW. (He started, nicely, with a teaser, letting people guess how he took the pic - but I wasn't around until the entire shebang was finished.) For those who don't like WMP9 (linked in the forum post above), I've made a QuickTime version as well. (Louis Wu 15:53:00 UTC)

And all with one figure. Wow.
Plasmanator continues the Action Figure Megabattle series started yesterday by Mintz08 - there was a funny one last night, and a pretty dang impressive one today. Check 'em out! (Louis Wu 18:30:44 UTC)

Halo Paintings are Cool.
Wow. Nice Halo painting - 20x30 acrylic on canvas. Pointed out by its creator, Stinogatron. He mentions that there are a couple of other Halo pieces in his DeviantArt gallery. (One of them is already in our Wallpaper section...) (Louis Wu 13:01:44 UTC)

Always Outnumbered. Never Outpunned.
Wow. 200 strips. And that doesn't count Sundays, or Holidays, or Guest strips, or Archived strips. There are a lot of things you can say about Stuntmutt, but fly-by-night isn't one of them. Today's One One Se7en has got to be one of the worst puns EVER. Update: That BOLL just COULDN'T leave well enough alone, could he? (Louis Wu 10:07:44 UTC)

Halo50k3 - whatta show!
Wow. Halo50k3 ended with a bang - Team FFA took the final 4v4 title by beating Team StK in a nailbiter of a match, 50-49. Dolbex promises that games will be rebroadcast soon - keep your eyes on mlgpro.com! There are more news articles and more pictures to see, right now. And speaking of pictures - Rapture uploaded another massive batch of photos yesterday - including some nice closeups of the Nightmare Armor helmets that each member of the winning team took home. (Nice bonus prize, eh?) Check 'em out! (Louis Wu 09:13:54 UTC)

The Fusion of Art and Technology
WOW. Xavier, a newcomer to HBO, pointed out a new skin he created, based on some fantastic Tina Leyk artwork, posted at HaloMC.com. (There was some trouble earlier getting to that forum, so if you can't see his post, he started from this picture, and ended up with this guy (a second pic is here). A local copy of the ppf is available here (145k). To apply this, grab a copy of Extion's HHHT application (a local copy is here, 532k) and apply this ppf to your copy of bitmaps.map (in the MAPS folder). From here on out, any instance of a Spec-Ops Elite (they occur naturally on Two Betrayals, Keyes, and the Maw, and can be injected into any OTHER level) will now have this skin. I took a couple of pics (one | two) after the cafeteria on the Maw - they're not great, but it was a way to see how easy it was to get this skin into the game. I gotta say... this rocks. All around. A Plethora of HUDless Screens
Wow. Halo Boy has posted an entire collection of HUDless screenshots - and they're very, very good. The entire set is hosted at Photobucket; if the bandwidth runs out because of this news post, drop us a line, we'll see what we can do about mirroring the files. (Louis Wu 11:27:28 UTC)

Miscellaneous Art - The Beginning
Wow. It's been a LONG time since the Miscellaneous Art section was updated. I decided it was time to stop putting it off... I process 86 entries today. Neither the server, nor folks on slower connections, can handle that kind of load, though, so I'm going to release them in 30-image batches. They're currently sorted by author (first name, because many people submit with just a one-name alias), not submission date (it was too much work to figure out what came from where) - so if you've submitted Miscellaneous Art in the past 3 months, and your name begins with A or B, your material is up now. Tomorrow I'll post C through P, and Saturday will be R through Z. It's going to be so nice to have an empty queue! Apologies to EVERYONE involved. This batch is primarily sketches - go see what's there! (Louis Wu 21:28:39 UTC)

Behind the scenes - Magazine Pimpage
Wow. Frankie has posted an awesome interview/picture cornucopia over on Bungie.net; a discussion with Jeremy Zoss, Associate Editor of Game Informer magazine (about GI's visit to Bungie in preparation of last month's article), and a collection of more than a dozen VERY high resolution images (screenshots and concept art) that were eventually used in the story. If you've read the magazine (or our press scan), you've seen the pictures... but not like this. Go read! First heads-up seems to be from Wolfy, of Sector 7. (Louis Wu 02:38:50 UTC)

Links page update
Wow. Seems like there was some pent-up demand, that's for sure - in the first day and a half since we posted our link submission form, we've added 50 sites to our Links page. We've had to reject a bunch of entries - folks who submitted sites with no Halo content, or sites that aren't running yet, or Seventh Column chapters - and in a couple of cases, sites which take more than 80% of their content from us, and even go so far as to simply LINK TO OUR VERSIONS of that content, rather than host it locally... but in general, I'd have to say this seems like a rousing success, and one that allows us to add your link to our Links page without the delay incurred by having to wait for me to find time to do this. Keep up the submissions! (Louis Wu 10:58:03 UTC)

The man is out of control.
Spideroptics might have said it best - "It's Bungie vs. BOLL. Who will win? Stay tuned." BOLL's latest shot over the bow is a custom 3d screenshot... and all I can say is WOW. (Hit left or right arrow, and watch the large plasma bolt's leading edge crackle.) Because BOLL's ISP sharply throttles traffic outside Scandinavian countries, you might want to look at our local mirror of this file (6.1 mb, Flash format), rather than the links in BOLL's forum post. (Louis Wu 02:13:35 UTC)

CE dividends for HPC users
Wow. Vram has posted a note on the Gearbox forums - grab a pair of dll files from the Halo CE distribution and replace the corresponding files in the Halo PC distribution... and the 'Crash on Map Change' bug will disappear. (This will NOT let you play Halo CE maps in Halo PC - it simply removes one of the more annoying bugs in HPC.) As always, back up your files before replacing anything, in case it doesn't work for you. Thanks to TURBO, on the #hbo irc channel, for the heads-up. (Louis Wu 17:10:00 UTC)

An exercise in physics
Wow. XBC player Scars has put together a film (you must be registered on the XBC forums to view this thread) called '50 ways to nade things to you in Hang 'em High' - and that's exactly what it is. 11:45 long, 30 mb large, WMP7 format, it shows you many, many different ways to get weapons to you using grenades on Hang 'em High. Where to stand, where to point your reticle before you throw... that sort of thing. 50 of 'em. Pwn your neighbors. Thanks, Smunchy. (Louis Wu 14:05:55 UTC)

Time to go to the movies
Wow. Now THERE'S a fun fan. Spideroptics received a keychain countdown timer for 'The Day After Tomorrow' at the movies yesterday; with a bit of printing and cutting, he turned it into something pretty cool. Nice! (Louis Wu 10:48:53 UTC)
