And it SHOOTS, too!
Wow. A couple of months late for our Pillar of Art contest (gallery showing tomorrow!)... but it's a killer piece of work. Chris Bryan has submitted a picture of a rifle he built; solid wood body, laser sight scope, co2 powered pellet gun - it's even the same scale as the actual 3d gun model! He's now off to work on the suit... (Louis Wu 14:25:17 UTC)

Wow.
A surprisingly deep collection of artwork today has been added to the Miscellaneous art section, including a nice faked Halo2 shot, an interesting take on Cortana, and a pair of simply gorgeous comic-style MCs from ZZoMBiE13 (I'd love to have these last two hanging on my wall!). Check 'em all out! (Louis Wu 21:46:45 UTC)

The WHAT team?
Wow. Either someone's smoking too much crack... or something got leaked. A representative of ArtSource (a digital media staffing agency with an office in Seattle) posted to the CG Talk Hiring forum, with a request that reads in part:

Are you a SENIOR 3D Max modeler (3+ years of work experience) with multiplayer map experience, texturing and game experience? Are you available for CONTRACT work in Seattle for 3+ months?

If you have an amazing reel of strong environment modeling, we need you to work with the HALO and MARATHON team. These positions start out contract but may convert to direct hire.

Longtime Bungie fans might be going a bit berserk right now, given that 'Marathon team' reference... but remember one thing: right near the top of Bungie's very own Jobs page, there's a disclaimer:

Note to Recruitment Agencies: In accordance with Microsoft's recruitment policies, Bungie does not accept applicants from recruitment agencies and will not pay a recruitment fee for any candidates.

So: Is ArtSource working in a sanctioned way with Bungie (or Microsoft) - or have they flipped? And how real is the 'Marathon team'? Speculation is welcome on our forum, and if we get any harder information than this, we'll be sure to post it right here. (Thanks to Ian Mankowski for finding this gem.) Update: Evil Otto clears up the situation with a flat "there is no Marathon sequel in our plans at this time." Read his post for more details on how this might have come about. Thanks, EO! Pictures, pictures, and a LOT more pictures
Wow. We haven't updated the Wallpaper section in almost a week... and now there are 21 new desktops for you. 10 come from kapowaz, and are just interesting renditions of opening screens on each campaign level. (Each one is available in 5 sizes, as well.) The other 11 (two of which come in multiple sizes) are individual submissions. Total number of new screens (including variations): 63. Wonga! Check the Wallpaper section. (Louis Wu 03:32:03 UTC)

Halogamers.com goes live
Wow. Every week, we get email from folks who want their site to be added to our Links list. We announce 'em all... but it's rare that I'm as impressed with one as I am with Halogamers.com. Clean design, good (unique) content, lots to explore... It's not finished yet, but it's well on its way. Check 'em out... and if you're near Eau Claire, WI, go play with 'em! Pitchford Holds Forth
The Randy Pitchford interview we mentioned yesterday has come to pass... and gawd, is it full of information. Everything from how Gearbox got the job to build Halo PC in the first place, to how they're getting around some of the stickiest problems in the conversion, to what WASN'T hard... wow. Go read this. Thanks to TankRamp, of the venerable Battleground: Halo, for the heads-up. (Louis Wu 19:08:31 UTC)

PC Halo - Revealed!
Wowowow. The promised Gamespy Halo PC article went online early this morning... and I'm still reeling. (There are actually two articles - the main one, and a separate one on the new multiplayer features available in the PC version.) Release date is tentatively August or September... and it's gonna be a winner. The 10 campaign levels have been translated faithfully from the original; with the exception of the higher resolution (it was demoed at 1024x768 for Gamespy, but the implication was that even higher resolutions should be supported) and the interface tweaks (there are more keys on a keyboard than buttons on an Xbox controller, after all), the solo campaign will be identical to the original. The differences will lie in multiplayer. There are 6 brand-new multiplayer maps, as well as the ability to use the covenant fuel cannon, fly the banshee, and drive a modified warthog (with a rocket launcher in the back). There are also new multiplayer modes, and the ability to tweak existing modes:

...you can give the Red Team a set of Warthogs that respawn immediately, while giving the Blue Team one Scorpion tank that only reappears after a minute.

The only feature of the Xbox version that's in danger of NOT making it over to the PC side is Coop play. Gearbox is hopeful they can find a way to implement it easily before Halo PC goes gold... but they can't promise anything. Oh, and the keyboard/controller debates can finally be decided, since they've included gamepad support; grudge matches are SURE to be played. Anyway, there are pages and pages of juicy content in the two stories, and 16 screenshots/concept art images... so go read! (Louis Wu 12:52:57 UTC)

Wow. Halo: The Flood has shown up on Publisher's Weekly's Mass Market Bestseller's List (number 11)! Wow. More details over at Bungie Sightings. Thanks to poenadare for the heads-up. (Louis Wu 17:15:43 UTC)

Mac Halo screens!
Wow. Yesterday, Eclarap pointed out a link to the PC Halo Strategy Guide. It's not for sale yet, but that was the first we'd heard that it even existed. (I, personally, figured that the Prima guide would serve.) There was a bit of speculation on our forum about the comments that there would be new vehicles and weapons in the PC version. (The common belief up to this point was that it would be more or less a straight port.) Well, a contact at Westlake (the development house doing the Macintosh port) contacted us late last night with a pair of screenshots to whet people's appetites. Now, I know what you're thinking - it's April 1, this is all a joke. What you have to realize is that we had nothing whatsoever to do with the timing here. Eclarap found that strategy guide yesterday, the day before April 1 - and the discussion about it generated the email that got us the images. I seriously toyed with the idea of holding off for a day, and posting these tomorrow, so that folks would KNOW they were real... but I figure there's enough in them to vouch for their veracity that people could look past the date we're putting them up. Things to notice:

  • The incredibly beautiful hi-res textures here. (blow up an existing screenshot and see what it looks like)
  • The new weapons. (Okay, they're not new - they're back. How cool is that?)
  • The aspect ratio. (Xbox shots are taken at 640x480, max... these are 1280x1024. The ratio is no longer 4:3, it's 5:4.)

We've been told (though we haven't seen for ourselves) that a modified Shadow (not the new one, but a version of the original Shadow) will be available in multiplayer games - and that there are two new outdoor levels to take advantage of this vehicle. Okay, enough talk. Visit our Screenshots database and check out the shots - one campaign, one multiplayer. Personally, I can't wait for summer! (For those still holding out, be warned - these do contain spoilers.) (Louis Wu 08:59:45 UTC)

Halo Cheats made easier - no modding required.
Wow. I wonder if this really has a market? A company called CodeJunkies has created a product called ActionReplay, a $39.99 package (£19.99 in the UK) that uses a specially-modified 8 MB memory card to move saved games from your PC to your Xbox and back. (The package comes with 'powersaves' - saved games from critical points in Halo, and other games.) More details can be found in a writeup at XBOX365, which was pointed out to us in our forum by Tomass. (Louis Wu 17:54:01 UTC)

War, the Stock Market... and Halo 2
Wow. The 'Not in 2003' news on Halo 2 is big enough to be reported by Reuters. Now that's impressive for a videogame release date status update... (Thanks to mnemesis for the heads-up.) Update: Griffon points out that it made the BBC news, as well. When was the last time you saw this sort of coverage for a videogame development status update? Update 2: Hehe - just to be complete, poena.dare (whose day it is not) has compiled a sizeable list of news sites that have grabbed this story. Wonga. (Louis Wu 13:20:50 UTC)

Wow. If you've got a phone with a polyphonic ringer, check this out. (Even if you don't, listen to the midi file. It's pretty dang impressive.) Thanks to Team Overkill for the heads-up. (Louis Wu 04:28:50 UTC)

Words fail me.
...Wow. I mean... wow. Update: upon consideration, I feel I should point out that at least two of these movies have pretty serious spoilers for REAL tricksters - they show things that might ruin one of the last remaining 'big' tricks left to do. Don't watch them if you're intent on doing this trick on an unhacked box. (Frogblast makes it clear which movies these are - this note is simply an attempt to help you resist the temptation.) Who is Cortana, anyway?
Wow. I thought I had a handle on Cortana... but I'm starting to wonder. The speculation today started with Mark Simmons - he brings up some pretty intriguing points. Even if you feel you can slough off most of what he says, though... check out barkbat's reply. Wow - there's some serious food for thought in there. (It should go without saying that posts like these are FULL of spoilers - but I'm saying it anyway.) (Louis Wu 22:05:18 UTC)

Now THERE'S a deal.
Wow. Are you a UK resident who hasn't been able to justify the price of an Xbox yet? Here's a deal you just can't turn down... £194.99 buys you

  • Xbox Console (with one controller)
  • Halo
  • Splinter Cell
  • Jet Set Radio Future
  • Sega GT 2002

(You can buy the same package, without Halo or Splinter Cell, for £35 less... but why would you want to?) Visit Gameplay's web store for all the details. (This package will be available next Friday.) Thanks to Nijhazer for the heads-up. (Louis Wu 21:20:59 UTC)

Halo Fan Music Rocks.
Wow. Justin Durban, who turned in a pretty cool reworking of the Halo theme about 6 weeks ago, has spoken again. Justin says:

Its hard to describe this one is like. I guess you'll just have to hear it. Basically the theme comes in and out and is even modified to a point. Perhaps Marty will do the same with his score.

It starts quietly, and builds to a beautiful finale - this is three and a half minutes of beauty. It weighs in at just under 5 megs... if you're a fan of the Halo 2 theme, you should grab this piece. (You can check out more of Justin's work at Edgen Animations, if you like what you hear.) (Louis Wu 09:10:03 UTC)

Now THAT'S off-roading.
We're a little ambiguous about posting info from the Edge scans leaked this weekend... but this picture was so cool, we decided we couldn't hold it back. Warbow has taken the new Halo 2 ATV and stuck it out in the American west... wow. You can find it in our Miscellaneous Art section. Update: seems Warbow forgot the shadow on the first version. Grab it again if you downloaded it already - it's better now. :) (Louis Wu 19:50:49 UTC)

When you want it, you want it...
Wow. Folks have noticed Halo 2 for sale elsewhere before... but Djoey154 found it at Amazon.co.uk. What blew me away was not that it was listed... but that its sales rank was 812. That's considerably higher than several RELEASED games! (Genma Onimusha, for example, is at 878.) Behold The Power Of Cheese. (Release date, for those keeping track of companies to snicker at, is listed as November 28, 2003. I looked carefully, but there was no mention of the hour.) (Louis Wu 10:59:23 UTC)

The Trickster's Awake
Here we are, coming up on the 10-month anniversary of the release of the Xbox... and major new glitches are STILL being discovered. Frogblast shows how to get to Keyes from the very beginning of the level Keyes... and how to get to the lifepods on the Pillar of Autumn long before you're supposed to. Wow. Tweeter LANfest described
Lophan has posted a Halo @ Tweeter Day postmortem on our forum, detailing the goings-on this past weekend of the Philly Halo Anonymous chapter of the Seventh Column... if you weren't there, you missed up to 15 players fragging each other on huge bigscreen HDTVs for over 6 hours. (Freewill, another attendee, posted a couple of pics recently.) Wow... a 2 hour, 6x6 CTF game... ouch. Go read it! (Louis Wu 03:00:47 UTC)
