The Case of the Missing Story
Wow. I'm not one for rumors, generally (have you noticed?), but when the BBC gets involved... Apparently, there was a link on the BBC front page that claimed that Halo 2 PC would debut on Windows Vista (the successor to XP). The article was pulled almost immediately - but Joystiq got a screenshot of the link (though not the article itself; it had already been pulled by that point), and addict3d.org saw it in time to actually summarize it. If this is true... wow. We've been telling people that we doubted a Halo 2 PC would ever come out. This is one time I wouldn't mind being wrong. (At this point, it's JUST A RUMOR. The only information has been pulled from the web almost faster than it was put up. We know nothing, and it could easily be a mistake (or a prank) on BBC's part; in fact, if it were anyone less reputable than the BBC, we probably wouldn't even be mentioning it. Goes to show you, though... it's really, really, REALLY hard to keep stories quiet - even mistakes.) Thanks, Muskie, for the heads-up. Update: Holy moley - it's REAL! We just got the press release from AEG. Update 2: Turns out the article is still on the BBC website - it was just at a different link. Thanks, Dark Knight and Brandon Smith. I'm not sure I could fit that on my wall.
Wow. Xbox Australia is selling that huge, huge Halo 2 Coke sign that hung in King's Cross - the auction goes live next week, and the proceeds benefit the Make-A-Wish foundation. More details can be found in Frankie's writeup on B.net. Thanks to Vironex for pointing it out. (Louis Wu 20:19:24 UTC)

Man... if I had that on XBL...
Wow. A couple of weeks ago, we pointed out the DeviantART gallery of lhs - today, MattKnight01 noticed a new image in that gallery. That's one heckuva gun! (Louis Wu 15:09:08 UTC)

Driving Keyes
Wow. This guy doesn't stop. Last week, we mentioned that scurty had finished the level Keyes in under 3 minutes on Easy, and under 4 on Legendary; he's pared that Legendary time down to 3:09... with no shots fired. Video quality isn't so good (looks like he's been using the same VHS tape for the last 300 runs or so - heh), but the shortcuts are incredible. Check 'em out! (We've put up mirrors - WMP9 | QT - to save on mythica's UserUploads bandwidth.) And thanks to insidi0us for keeping track. (Louis Wu 17:28:09 UTC)

Hunt THIS.
Wow. Thanks to mr_mcmurder, who found this bad boy, and this one, over at Craig Mullins' website (posted 3 days ago - geez, you guys are slow). I've sent off a request to add them to his Halo gallery here, but in the meantime, you should browse around his site... because, well, he rocks. (Louis Wu 04:18:13 UTC)

Flattery? Nah.
Wow, I've seen sleazy... but this is pretty amazing. Over at a site called 'JonsModding', they're SELLING (yes, selling) three maps for your Xbox, which they're willing to install for you. These maps come from "the programming department teamed with JonsModding", and they "have programmed the maps to use the old halo 1 weapontry and we have even added a new vehicle called 'The Wasp'." The three maps? "We have named them Immature, Anxiety, and Corrupted." Whoa... that sounds a lot like the names of the three maps released by Mothergoat back in September! (Well, except for the Immure/Immature typo - but that actually gets corrected later on down the page.) And hey - those screenshots look the same, too! Oh... no wonder... JonsModding simply linked to the images on mothergoat.net. Dang, they couldn't even be bothered to localize the images they stole. Wow. These guys have a forum - maybe some of you want to discuss this issue with them? (Louis Wu 11:52:16 UTC)

Over Jumping
Wow. Over at High Impact Halo, there's a link to a new Jump Tactics vid focusing on Over Jumping - a new kind of jumping that doesn't involve any aided jumps (no rockets, no grenades, no other people), getting its participants to pretty ridiculous places. If you're a fan of jumping, you've got to go watch this. (Louis Wu 17:51:32 UTC)

Halo Zero, Revisited
I was gonna let this one go... but everyone and their brother is writing about it, so I guess I need to say something. A couple of days ago we mentioned that Halo Zero, a fan-made sidescroller, was #10 on Gamespot's most popular game list. Yesterday, it shot to number 1 - and it's still there today. The reason I didn't want to say anything is because you're seeing synergistic feedback in action - the game is very high on the list of most popular games (and it's the only non-commercial game there), so people visit the page to see what it's about... which raises its popularity, which makes MORE people go look at it, and so on. It's a fine game - a pretty impressive effort for a fan-made product - but it's not the best game on the planet, and the expectations that are being built because of its position on Gamespot's list are unfair. (There are lots of forum threads over there about how crappy this game is - which it's not... until you start comparing it to Metal Gear Solid or GTA3 or WoW.) So: it's really fun that it's gotten to the top of the Most Popular list... but at this point, folks need to let it fall off again, or nobody will EVER enjoy it. (Louis Wu 18:46:11 UTC)

The Twelve Night Siege
Jillybean has been creating Christmas stories for the past couple of years - and this year, she went a step further. She recruited some pretty talented artists from the Halo community to illustrate her holiday tale... and man, what a job they all did! The story is heartwarming, but when you add artwork from Theo Prins, Paul Davies, Shishka, Dillo, and several OTHER talented artists... wow. The images themselves will eventually be added to various collections around HBO - but for now, read the story in our Fan Fiction section, and check out the pics there (each of the thumbs leads to a larger version). Don't forget to leave your comments! (Louis Wu 16:23:12 UTC)

It's Just A Jump To The Left.
Wow... I could have SWORN today's One One Se7en was recycled... but the only Rocky Horror strips I could find were from Ross Mills, and they're not really the same thing at all. Anyway, the joke SHOULD have popped up before now... it amazes me how much fodder there actually is for this sort of thing. (Louis Wu 18:05:39 UTC)

When there's no news, make it up.
Wow. GamesRadar has one of the more bizarre 'news' articles I've seen in a while; they're suggesting that Halo 3 (a title that hasn't even been announced yet) might come on 4 double-layer DVDs. Where does this come from? Well, apparently someone is claiming that "one particular 'highly anticipated' Xbox 360 title is currently taking up four 9GB DVDs"... and, in GameRadar's words, "nothing is more anticipated than the next Halo." (Who is this someone? Heh. Your guess is as good as mine.) Wow... what a stretch. Thanks to Cybrfrk and ZiplocBodybag for pointing this silliness out. (Louis Wu 17:48:26 UTC)

Back from the Mackies.
Wow. Spent yesterday at the Machinima Festival, where Rooster Teeth went home with 3 Mackies (Excellence in Machinima Writing for P.A.N.I.C.S., Best Editing (for Strangerhood), and Best Independent Machinima (for Red vs Blue Season 3), and Chris Burke went home with Best Machinima Series for This Spartan Life. (Since we provide Chris with his movie bandwidth, I suppose you can say that HBO has award-winning bandwidth!) There were lots of other awards; these were the only Halo-related ones. Saw lots of friends, old and new, saw lots of good machinima, got inspired by panel discussions that suggested where machinima might be going in the future. All in all, a fantastic day. Put me a little behind, though, in terms of HBO... I'll do my best to catch up. In the meantime, enjoy your weekend! (Louis Wu 16:07:05 UTC)

Save the seeds. Dispose of the rest.
Wow. The deadline for entries to our 343 Guilt O' Lantern contest is coming up fast (just 3 and a half days left)... and we've got two brand-new prizes to toss on the pile! Both Steve Downes, voice of the Master Chief, and Tim Dadabo, voice of 343 Guilty Spark, have agreed to contribute the recording of a message on your answering machine (or your cell phone's voicemail, or whatever you choose); the first place pumpkin will get their choice of actors, the second place pumpkin will get the other one. Wouldn't you like the Master Chief telling your callers "I need a message."? (The message itself is completely up to you. They'll just bring it to life.) Tacked on top of an Xbox, and EB Games gift cards, and an I Love Bees DVD... if you're not carving a pumpkin, you're tossing away your chance at some awesome prizes. (Louis Wu 14:54:58 UTC)

A week and a half's worth of Podtacular
Wow. Looks like since they stopped telling us about them, we've completely missed the last few Podtacular podcasts. We mentioned Episode 12 on October 10... since then, they've released Episode 13 (Grenade Power and Burial Mounds), Episode 14 (Customs and Call-Ins), Episode 15 (high-quality update), Episode 16 (Coag and Combos), and Episode 17 (Customs and Call-Ins). Go catch up! (Louis Wu 13:45:13 UTC)

Sponsors vs Freeloaders Ep 8: Fiat Justitia
Today's the day for Sponsors vs Freeloaders, I think. Last night, the trailer for Silver Stars/Purple Hearts was released - if you haven't grabbed it yet, hang tight. They've also just released Episode 8 of Sponsors vs Freeloaders - and WOW. GREAT cinematography, great effects (the coolest one is something you might not even notice as an effect - that's one of the things that makes it cool). The storyline continues to twist and turn, the acting is great. This series is turning into one of my favorites. The WMP9 version is up now on their website; it's pretty big (90 mb), partly because the episode is ten and a half minutes long, partly because they've tacked the SSPH trailer on to the end of it. Their site is being hit pretty hard, so I'm going to make the QT version available from our server until they get it under control - it's 88 mb. If what you really wanted was the SSPH trailer alone, in QT format - I'll put THAT up, temporarily, too (though you really should grab SvF 8, because it rocks). Both of these will eventually be available from the SvF/SSPH sites, and when they are, I'll pull the temp links. (And likely update this news post.) Go watch! (Louis Wu 17:57:21 UTC)

HaloCE content - now and upcoming
Wow. Dunno if this is gonna hold up, over time... but over at the Gearbox Forums, TheGhost has created a RAR file containing the HaloCE complete tagset - giving you "access to every biped, vehicle, scenery item, sky, SP tag, and ALL SP AND MP SCENARIO FILES." It's a huge package - 362 mb compressed, over a gig uncompressed - and that's AFTER he deleted the tags that already come with the HEK. It's been up for a day or so, and nobody from Gearbox or Bungie has complained - yet - so if you're interested in creating new content for HaloCE, this is a resource you shouldn't pass up. (Thanks, DHalo, for the heads-up.) And while we're on the topic of cool CE stuff, check out this thread - Kornman and Lightning have managed to get Campaign working in HaloCE, and will be releasing stuff soon. (Thanks, merecatfish.) Could this be enough to turn around the HaloCE community decline? (Louis Wu 07:13:13 UTC)

Connection issues, and Halo Nation Podcast
Wow. So for those who didn't notice, the internet broke yesterday. Two of the big boys (Cogent and Level 3) had a falling-out... and much traffic was blocked from getting where it needed to get. If you want to know more about this situation, you can read this Slashdot article (and its comments). Some people STILL can't get here. Anyway, that's by way of explanation for why today's news is coming so late - I couldn't get here myself until a few minutes ago. So: first up, there's ANOTHER Halo-based podcast, Halo Nation... they're already up to episode 3. This episode is just under an hour, and weighs in at 43 mb. Check 'em out! (Louis Wu 13:00:47 UTC)

Executive Producer for Halo Movie Signed
There were rumors floating around that Peter Jackson might be directing the upcoming Halo movie - today, Bungie's posted an article that might just floor you. Jackson is on board - as Executive Producer. That means WETA, the special effects house behind the Lord of the Rings trilogy and Jackson's upcoming King Kong, will ALSO be on board, creating the sets and effects that will bring Halo to life. Wow. Just plain... wow. Joe says he and Pete Parsons are headed down to New Zealand next week to meet with Jackson... if you had fears that Bungie would abandon the movie to the heartless Hollywood machine, put them aside. Metal Gear Solid (Halo Style)
Wow. Jamie98s has put up a bunch of movies over the last four months - but this one might be my favorite. It's called Metal Gear Solid, and it's (as might be expected) a story starring Solid Snake, from the MGS series. Jamie's plot description: "Solid Snake is deployed to a secret miltary base to disarm a nuclear warhead and destroy a top secret project known as Metal Gear." Audio is from MGS, video is all Halo (with a few special effects thrown in). Fantastic job - simply fantastic. It's rather large (107 mb in WMP9 format, 100 mb in QuickTime format), because it's rather long (32 and a half minutes), so we're starting it off as a BitTorrent download. You can grab the WMP9 torrent or the QT one - your choice. We're also providing quite a bit of seed bandwidth (2000 kB/sec per torrent), so downloads should be speedy, and should STAY speedy if early downloaders leave BitTorrent open after they've gotten a copy. In a day or two, we'll provide direct download links, as well, for folks who can't handle BT. Enjoy it - I sure did. (Louis Wu 22:17:16 UTC)

Boxed In
Wow. Remember that cool box the Limited Edition of Halo 2 came in? The Inquirer has a story this morning about a company in Denmark that's suing Microsoft for stealing proprietary information about a metal DVD container, then passing it along to the rival company that ended up manufacturing the boxes. (Microsoft says it did no such thing.) It's still in court - but who'da thunk there'd be controversy about the BOX? (Louis Wu 13:25:40 UTC)
