What's on YOUR tombstone?
Wow... this is a little weird, I think. ManKitten found an ad in American Funeral Director, a publication for the mortuary industry, promoting a product to help you remember your loved one for the important things in their life... and the example they put together involves Halo 2. Go check out the picture. (Louis Wu 13:08:43 UTC)

Immaturity Reigns
Wow. One of these days, I need to pay attention to our rules; they're set up for a reason. When we automated our Links section, we got over a hundred submissions in the first few days - we set up a rule saying 'no more front-page mentions for new sites' because we didn't want the front page to be nothing but new site mentions. Yesterday, we got email asking us to front-page 2old2play, a splinter group of the Geezer Gamers. I declined - but was sent a series of emails over the course of the afternoon, hounding me to reconsider. So this morning, mostly to make the emails stop, I did. Now I'm getting emails from folks who stayed in the original Geezer Gamers, telling me that the split was pretty unfriendly, that the information we posted wasn't true, and that we needed to set the record straight on the slander. Let this post stand as notice that never again will we EVER post news about a new site, unless there is content that WE believe warrants a post. NO exceptions. Don't ask - because it won't happen. I refuse to participate in he-said, she-said games. (Louis Wu 21:45:13 UTC)

Battle of the HUDless shots!
Wow. Yesterday afternoon, Mast3r posted a pair of gorgeous HUDless shots (one shot, two sizes) - today, prometheus unveiled his own versions of the same view (started several days ago, and covering much more territory). Great minds think alike. They're ALL beautiful! Check out both links. (Louis Wu 16:00:17 UTC)

iGod... Holy Halo
Wow. Now THIS is something... I haven't seen before. A collection of south Texas religious groups (they might all be the same entity; I can't tell - but we've got Fuzion Church, Crossroads Baptist Church, and Chi-Ro Ministries) has put together a series of Halo-based machinima to promote a Christian weekend retreat - and to promote Christian principles in general. Movies are in QuickTime format, and available in a couple of different resolutions each. Definitely points for innovative use of modern technology to get across an age-old message... thanks to HaloPlanet for pointing this out. (Louis Wu 13:15:39 UTC)

Comic Invasion
Wow... must be comic time. We've been told about three new ones this weekend:

  • 2401 is sort of a One-One-Se7en-esque strip from Guilty Spark - humor is a bit spotty, but it's early yet. As of this writing, there are 7 strips in that thread.
  • Halo In Paradise has just a single strip up - and apparently, something went terribly wrong when he saved it (so it's really small). Strip 2 coming soon.
  • This Island Earth is a merging of Halo and a classic 1955 B-movie from Andrew Gaynor of Black Art Studios; there are currently two pages up, with more coming soon, homework allowing.

In addition, we got mail from Über-Chief 69 about bandwidth problems with Resolute (mentioned a couple of times recently in our news). If anyone wants to help... hmm. I'd tell you to contact him via his website, but there doesn't seem to be any contact link at all there. Oh, well. (Louis Wu 21:44:20 UTC)

Halo 2 LE for cheap
Wow. Amazon.com is selling the Halo 2 Limited Edition (well, actually Tiger Direct is, THROUGH Amazon) for $35 plus shipping. What a deal! Thanks, Joystiq. (Louis Wu 13:35:53 UTC)

Eggsponential Disclosure
Wow. Bungie has decided to help out the egg hunt - apparently, a number of fun Announcer snippets have been hidden in Halo 2 multiplay so well that nobody's found them. An interview with Max Hoberman about the philosophy of egglaying is followed by these snippets, coupled with their triggers in-game... go listen... then try and find them on your own! An Open Letter To All Those Who Cheat
I didn't write it. IcedPitchBlack did. You should read it, though. Update: Wow... this seems to have hit a nerve. 165 responses in 11 hours... there are some dissenters, but in general, it seems a LOT of people agree with the sentiment that Halo 2 multiplay should be about FUN, not 'leveling up'. The Samurai Spirit
Hehe - took almost a week - but Bungie finally posted the post-mortem of last week's Halo Humpday Challenge, during which they were murdalized by the GunShin clan, a group of Japan's finest Halo warriors. Man... the idea of a two man team, one with plasma pistol, the other with a battle rifle, working together faster than a single person can switch from one to the other... wow. Go read. Thanks to JHG, who noticed it before I did. (Louis Wu 22:06:01 UTC)

Closing in on Two Hours
Wow. Cody Miller posted a note on our forum about the project over at Highspeedhalo.org to put together a sub-2-hour Halo Speedrun; recently, he and goatrope shaved 6 minutes off 3 levels, bringing the 10 level total to 2:09. They're getting close - go visit and see if you can help! (Louis Wu 12:53:38 UTC)

A home for your toys
WOW. If you're a Halo action figure collector, you want to know about these guys - Out of Reach Constructions, an Australian firm specializing in Halo-themed display structures for your action figures. They ain't cheap (the two existing structures are A$160 plus shipping and handling, with four new prototypes on the way)... but they're beautiful. The site contains photos of the various models, plus info about the manufacturing process. I want! Thanks to Halo Planet for the heads-up on this. (Louis Wu 21:51:46 UTC)

Look - Flamingos. And Penguins!
Wow. Fire Team Charlie has posted Episode 18 for members - currently DivX-only (74.5 mb), but QuickTime coming soon. With all the machinima coming out these days, and no updates since mid-January, you might have forgotten about these guys... that would be a mistake. A great blend of Halo footage and humor, with just the right amount of mod effects. This one was all Benny - and it rocks. (Should be up for the masses by Wednesday.) (Louis Wu 16:04:33 UTC)

How to Witness Using Halo 2
Wow... now I've seen everything. There's an article in the Christian Post about using Halo 2 to get the word out about Christianity.

"Jesus came to this planet to save the planet from a group much worse than the Covenant (the aliens) and from a fate much worse than physical death."

... I don't know what to say. (Louis Wu 18:51:29 UTC)

That thing just won't stop selling.
Dang, still going. Halo (the original) moved into 7th place in overall game sales for the week of February 20-26, according to the NPD Group (as reported by Evil Avatar). Halo 2... ain't on the Top 10 list. Wow. Thanks, 3Suns. Update: Oops... that was the PC list - no WONDER Halo 2 wasn't in it! My bad - thanks, Borgboy. (Still pretty cool; the game is a year and a half old, with TONS of stuff released in the interim!) (Louis Wu 01:55:42 UTC)

That's just too much money.
Wow. Blind Sniper005 noticed a Halo 2 Kubrick toy (distributed for free to early purchasers of Halo 2) on eBay - with a starting bid of $75. OUCH! Update: Item sold early via a Buy it Now bid. All gone! Thanks, Jammerfer. (Louis Wu 15:35:42 UTC)

Light at the end of the tunnel
Wow. The Movie Conunundrum I laid out yesterday has turned into a monster thread, with lots of decent ideas coming from lots of people. If you've offered your services as a volunteer 'watcher' - please be patient; I've recorded all names, but we won't do anything with them until the new upload system is built. So if you don't hear anything back in the next few days, it doesn't mean we've said no (or yes, for that matter) - it's just that we've not made any decisions yet. The outpouring of support, however, is heartwarming - thanks. (Louis Wu 14:41:49 UTC)

Wednesday's Reading
Fourteen new stories for you in today's Fan Fiction offering - and a milestone for me; the first post that I can remember where I didn't need to delete a single entry! Wow. Go read. Update: There's a fifteenth now, because someone... made noise. (No, this will not become a habit.) (Louis Wu 13:50:59 UTC)

Halo really IS big business
Wow. There's an article from the Seattle Post-Intelligencer today that talks about the big-business aspect of video game development... but buried in it are a bunch of tidbits that I haven't seen anywhere else yet. It talks about the newest job opening on Bungie's Jobs page - they're looking for an AI Engineer (we haven't mentioned this one yet). It discusses average salaries for programmers, artists, animators, and designers - a subject that came up very recently on our forum. It mentions that Microsoft will likely get about 2.5 percent of its sales and 7.5 percent of its profits from video games in the current fiscal year - pointing out the extreme profitability of game titles compared to MS's other products. And it quotes J Allard as saying that Bungie will DOUBLE its current staff of 65 people to work on 'the next installment [of Halo]'. THAT is a bombshell - if true. Go read! (Louis Wu 11:50:57 UTC)

Movies, movies, MOVIES
Wow... lots of vids posted to our forum while I was gone. I'm taking them at their word and assuming there's enough bandwidth to go around. (We have a bunch of stuff in the queue, hopefully that I can get to soon - we're going to have to let these stand or fall on their own.)

  • CollaterHalo - the club scene from the movie Collateral, reproduced on Midship/Headlong. Hosted by Vypers.net. WMP9 format, 22.3 mb.
  • Monkeys Gone Wild - a tour of all the trees in Halo 2 multiplayer maps (and how to get into them). Hosted by vypers.net. WMP9 format, 17.9 mb.
  • Anti-Cheating PSA - from Rampant Stupidity Productions, a look at cheaters and why they suck. It's in AVI format, but recorded with the WMV3 codec, so it won't play on a mac. 12 mb, hosted by Rampant Stupidity. (Update: And here's a 15.3 mb .mp4 file, thanks to Chester)
  • Devin's GreenRoomEffect - another Devin Olsen montage. Nice work. WMP9 format, 33 mb. Hosted by syeren.
  • WaLKa's Montage - some pretty amazing sniping, and general gameplay. WMP9 format, 24.7 mb. Extra mirrors can be found in this thread on the MLG forums.
  • Outpost 2 - the second episode of Outpost: Coagulation. Covenant politics... or something. WMP9 format, 21.2 mb, ALSO hosted by vypers.net. (Here's hoping they hold up... that's a lot of vids.)

Wow... will that keep you busy for a few minutes? (Please - if you try one of these links, and it's dead... you don't need to mail us. There's not much we can do about other people's bandwidth.) (Louis Wu 16:03:12 UTC)

Nightmare Armor - maybe your last chance
Wow. Webshift (the original webmaster for the Nightmare Armor website, but someone who left the team a ways back) is selling his personal Master Chief full body armor on eBay. Starting bid is $2000 (less than half the price a set would have cost you direct from Nightmare Armor, even if they HADN'T stopped selling it), and there's almost 7 days left in the auction. It's silver, and comes with undersuit and boots, and a storage bin. Check it out. (Louis Wu 06:18:02 UTC)

Now THAT'S a lot of pictures.
Wow. Didn't think it was going to happen - but I've cleared out the desktop queue again, and updated the Wallpaper section. Almost a month's worth of submissions - there are 23 new entries, but if you count all the variants (color, size, etc) there are over 50 new images. Check 'em out! (Louis Wu 00:01:20 UTC)

Death Cameras - Delineated
Wow. Frogblast has taken the time to compile a list of almost all the death cameras in Halo 2. What's a death camera, you ask? When you die, the camera jumps to a preset angle, depending on where you were and which direction you were facing. Froggie's pinned these down. Go look; as he says, this could be pretty useful information for egg-hunters. (Louis Wu 00:00:08 UTC)

Custom Tourneys - and More
Wow. Frankie pointed out a new article on Bungie.net that gets down and dirty with RSS feeds - it's an interview with the guys who run the DeFAS.org website about the tools they're developing that use Bungie's RSS feeds in new and innovative ways. Go check it out! (Louis Wu 01:32:19 UTC)

Thanks to Cody Cress, who pointed out that there is a new jump session at http://www.jukesbox.com/. This one focuses on slide jumping... wow. 9.5 mb, WMP9 format. Go watch. And come back to this news post later today. (Louis Wu 15:47:04 UTC)
