Halo 2 Cutscenes - in one package, via BT
Wow. If you want to get all the high-res Halo 2 cutscenes at once, without having to download them one at a time... HALOChat has made them available in a single 478 mb bundle via BitTorrent. Link can be found in this forum post. (I'm not sure how much demand there is for this... but certainly if you're starting with none of them, this is the easiest way to get 'em all.) Sucking out the will to live a normal life
Wow. There've been articles out there before about how wives and girlfriends are 'widowed' by Halo... but I've never seen one like this. Well-written... but FULL of stereotypes. Originally in the New York Observer, now a cover story for the Charlotte Creative Loafing. It'll either amuse you, or anger you... but it's a fun read. Thanks, Rich Cutter. (Louis Wu 22:03:09 UTC)

2004 Game Sales, By the Numbers
Tons of articles out there right now about the NPD 2004 numbers (the NPD Group keeps track of gaming sales, and yesterday released their top 10 game sellers in 2004 list) - first one I saw (and one with a nice Halo slant, to boot) was at MLGPro.com; thanks, Dolbex. Halo 2 sold more units than any other game in the US except Grand Theft Auto (which had almost a month's head-start on sales for the year). What's really interesting is that the FIRST Halo is still on the top 10 list - over 1.1 million units sold in the US. Wow. If you can't get enough of the number-crunching, there are articles at Gamespot, IGN, TeamXbox (thanks, John Rivas), and The Seattle Times. I'm sure there'll be dozens more as the day goes on - but we'll stick with these. (Louis Wu 09:47:27 UTC)

Back - with RPGs
Wow... I'd spent the entire day on a plane yesterday, and the evening with my family; I figured when I got in this morning, I'd be swamped with stuff to post... but the mailbox was almost empty! I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing... but let's start going through what IS here, because it looks like there's a bunch of house stuff I need to get to today, as well. First up: The7thWar is working on Halo: The RPG, several months into production, but still a long way to go. There's a 'press release' on our forum with some more info - if you've got questions, add 'em to the thread. (Louis Wu 16:17:34 UTC)

Busy Bungie Bees
Wow. When they're not running around for PR, those Bungie boys are busy. Two new articles for you over on Bungie.net (since I left for lunch, even): there are 3 new themes to customize the look of your Group pages (I'm pretty partial to Halo Babies, myself), and they've got a link up to GamePro's Reader's Choice Awards, now accepting votes (Halo 2 is up for Best Combat/Shooting Game and Game of the Year). Go read! (Louis Wu 19:23:08 UTC)

Gates highlights Halo 2 success at CES
Halo 2 was big enough to get a mention in Bill Gates' keynote speech at the Consumer Electronic Show in Las Vegas. 6.3 million copies sold to date... wow. This has been reported in a number of places - I found it easiest to read at Eurogamer. (Louis Wu 12:40:38 UTC)

Multiplayer Launching... oddness.
Wow. Devin Olsen posted a pair of vids last night that... well, go watch 'em. Bizarre multiplayer glitch leads to some really, really odd (but fun-to-watch) behavior. c0ld vengeance suggests this might have negative effects on gameplay - but I'm having trouble seeing how, at the moment. For now, it's silly but fun. (WMP9 format; if there's enough demand, I'll whip up a QT version.) (Louis Wu 18:31:59 UTC)

The Brick Gulch Chronicles
Wow. Buxton has recreated the first episode of Red vs Blue... with Lego bricks. It's nearly flawless - attention to detail is amazing. So here's a game (Halo) that was so good it inspired a group of guys to make a movie based on (and using) it... which was so good it inspired someone to reproduce that movie in an entirely different medium. It's an onion, I tell you. Thanks, Legolaso111. (Louis Wu 16:22:03 UTC)

Babies, and bathwater, and all that stuff.
Wow. A a couple of different articles have come out recently about violence in video games, both including Halo 2 in with games like GTA: SA. As far as I can tell, they're not even about the same organizations... Gamespot reports about a 5-member coalition, including the Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility, the National Council of Women's Organizations, Mothers Against Violence in America, Center for Advancement of Public Policy, Justice, and Witness Ministries of the United Church of Christ, that is looking to harden the policies about selling Mature-rated games to minors. (It looks like they got their info from an ICCR Press Release - thanks, UNEXPECTED62.) Australia's The Age reports statistics from The National Institute on Media and the Family. (Thanks, Brett C.) Is a game that glorifies violence against women and the police really not any more dangerous to our children's worldview than a game that pits us against alien aggressors in an attempt to save our planet (and our race)? What a difference a week makes...
Wow. Remember when Halo 2 was second only to The Legend of Zelda on GameRanking's all-time best list? That slot is now held by Half-Life 2... and Halo has fallen to 11th. OUCH! (Louis Wu 15:48:00 UTC)

A cult phenomenon, I tell ya!
Wow. I stopped by misterchief.com today, just to see how things were going - I'm pretty amazed by the fan art this site is attracting. If you haven't visited... go. It's funny stuff. (Louis Wu 13:56:33 UTC)

Holy...
Wow. If you live in the Seattle area, read this NOW. Major Nelson, the Xbox Marketing guy, has a free ticket (one ticket) for someone to play Halo all day Thursday. Winner to be picked at random tomorrow night (Wednesday, 3 November) from the folks who send in entries. Make sure you follow all the rules on that page, and that you're eligible. Nice deal! (Thanks, Cybrfrk!) (Louis Wu 01:32:33 UTC)

A poll that's getting to people.
Wow... this must be a big deal to someone... I've gotten mail from Microsoft's PR firm AND from Bungie employees about this, AND it's on Bungie.net's front page. Gamespy is running a new Grudge Match - Which are you more excited about, Halo 2 or Half-Life 2? Right now, Halo 2 is winning - but it matters to a lot of people that it stays that way, so go vote! (Bottom left corner of the page.) (Louis Wu 02:54:42 UTC)

Dre'al takes a spill
Tina Leyk dropped by last night with another incredible piece of artwork - this one's called 'Close Call' - she says it started out as a random doodle (unrelated to Halo), ended up as that. You can find it on her art collection page here (last picture). All I can say is... wow. (Louis Wu 12:27:33 UTC)

Launching Halo in Finland
Another launch party - this one in Helsinki, Finland. Details (for folks who can read Finnish) on this page. There's gonna be an armored personnel carrier there? Wow. Thanks, Scanner Darkly. (Louis Wu 10:44:33 UTC)

Random Images
I was cleaning out my inbox (in preparation for clearing out the art queues, once again woefully behind), and found a few images that don't really have a place to go in our heirarchy, but are worth showing anyway. ragereset sent in a pair of photos (here and here) showing a bus he saw in downtown Sydney, Australia a couple of weeks ago. The second one is blurry because rr drives a manual transmission car, and it's hard to photograph and drive at the same time. And linus wanted to show us the depths of his love for Halo 2 - he actually painted a Halo 2 logo on his retainer. Wow... (Louis Wu 15:53:27 UTC)

Bottom to the Top - in one shot
Missed this over the weekend... but Ms Man, in his quest to finish the unfinished in Halo before Halo 2 comes out (I just made that up, I don't know if that's really his goal), has blasted his way all the way from the bottom of Halo (the level)... to the top. Wow. Movie link, and a forum thread to talk about it, can be found over at High Impact Halo. Thanks, Ducain. (Louis Wu 13:35:14 UTC)

These guys are nuts.
Wow. Dunno how long this is gonna last... but Halo Impulse is offering a MASSIVE (1.3 GB) map pack, containing 264 individual Halo CE maps. Close to every map created to date, I think (minus a couple still in development). If you've got a really big pipe - go get it! (Louis Wu 23:39:53 UTC)

Halo Theme: Mjolnir Mix
Wow... very nice. If you visit nilerogers.com, you can listen to a 1:45 long snippet of the Halo Theme Mjolnir Mix - composed by Marty O'Donnell and Michael Salvatori, with guitars by Steve Vai. It rocks. Thanks, palatine. (The Flash popup that goes with the song is pretty nice, but if you're having trouble with it, the music is here.) (Louis Wu 00:18:17 UTC)

Open... or closed?
Wow. The email response to the closing of the forum has been surprising, to put it mildly. Folks writing to us have been overwhelmingly in favor of keeping the forum closed until November 9. However - I want to hear from the whole HBO community, not just those who bother to write emails. To that end, I've set up a simple poll - please cast your vote. Thanks! (Louis Wu 03:12:48 UTC)

Piracy Sucks - Still
Wow. Some scumbag uploaded a Halo attract movie to our ftp space; we served a lot of copies before someone was kind enough to tell me about it. I've shut down our ftp space for the time being - I don't have time to monitor it minute by minute, I'd rather it were offline than being used like this. Folks who need to upload files to us - feel free to email me, I'll give you a private, temporary link (use it or lose it). [Update: This does NOT mean you should mail me asking to see the video - it's people who do that make me wish I could reach through the internet and smack you upside your head.] It sucks that the majority end up suffering for the idiocy of a few... but that's the way it goes. In a similar vein, SketchFactor over at Bungie.net has asked for the community's help in shutting down sources of this leak; yeah, they'll keep coming back up, but the hope is, the number of people outraged will actually exceed the number breaking the law. Also, Deimos Fawkes, of Subnova, has posted an address where you can send mail; he'll do the job of weeding through duplicates and the like before forwarding to Bungie. Update: Apparently, the term 'attract movie' isn't as common as I thought. If you leave your Xbox idling on the start screen for Halo (or Halo 2), it will eventually cycle through several movies - showing solo, coop, and multiplayer gameplay. One of these movies, for Halo 2, was what was uploaded. (The name goes back to arcade games, I think, when 'attract mode' was the gameplay that would show on the screen to entice you to drop your quarter in the slot.) (Louis Wu 20:29:57 UTC)

Dialogue Databank - updated!
Wow. It took way too long - but I've finally cleared out most of the Dialogue Databank queue - there are 157 new entries today, including an entirely new Multiplayer section (really clean - thanks, Captain Spark!). There are large swaths of new Jackal and Elite sounds, as well. Go see what you can find! (Louis Wu 15:29:43 UTC)

Movie Bonanza
Looks like a LOT of movies were released yesterday; I'm gonna combine 'em all in one post for efficiency's sake.

  • Boneho Chane and Lockpicker made a movie with action figures (not stop-action) called 'Chicken on Fire Episode 1' - 15 mb, QuickTime format.
  • toyoungtodie posted a vid called 'Halo 2 Remix' on the High Impact Halo forums; it uses stock footage, but it's nicely put together. Large version (12.2 mb) requires registration at h2hq.cc, smaller version (7 mb) is hosted by Mythica. WMP9 formats. (Thanks, Ducain)
  • vshields ash points out another refinement of the hunterapult-across-the-shaft technique; this one uses only a single grenade. 2.2 mb, WMP90 format. Nice work, Wild3.
  • scabbronumber1 put up a note about his clan's newest vid; 8.5 mb, WMP9 format, some really great sniper action.
  • And last but CERTAINLY not least, FTC 14 has been released over at Xboxottawa.ca; public version is 39.6 mb, members-only hi-res is 165 mb. 6:03 of pulse-pounding excitement, and a heck of a cliffhanger at the end. Both are DivX-encoded AVIs - I'll get them some QT versions as soon as I can.

Wow... that's a lot of video footage! (Louis Wu 13:52:35 UTC)
