A nice tip o' the hat.
Lionhead Studios, creators of Black & White and Black and White 2, has put up a page with questions and answers for the developers about the making of B&W 2. If you scroll down to the section entitled 'Blooming and Trees', you'll see that the inspiration for this technique came straight from the original Halo. Nice! Thanks, HookMeUpImLocal. Targeting Tidbits
Interesting. Sniper 058 posted a small movie showing the shotgun reticle changing color (and thickness) as it passed over a nearby enemy. A bunch of forumites suggested it was just the layering effect of the HUD on the screen... until Dave Candland (the designer of that HUD) stepped in and confirmed that yes, indeed, the reticle will get fatter when passing over a zone of 'weakness' (like, say, the orange spots of a hunter). He also explained why there's no dot in the center of a reticle always, just when you're in head-shot range. Nice! (Louis Wu 22:11:49 UTC)

Shot replication
Hehe - sort of fun... STB has tried his hand at replicating a few Halo 2 screenshots, using Halo CE. Might have gone better with Elites in the pictures... but they're still nice! (Louis Wu 13:02:08 UTC)

On the internet, nobody knows you're an underdog.
AYB Fonzi, a member of the Str8 Rippin clan, has been interviewed over at MLGPro.com. (Interestingly enough, the interview was conducted over XBL, via headsets - nice!) An interesting story about a group of guys who came together over Xbox Live, and challenged the upper crusts of the Halo Pro scene. Give it a read - and be sure to check out the streaming footage from MLG Houston, kicking off this weekend! (Louis Wu 15:40:22 UTC)

The Essential 50
1UP.com has posted its Essential 50 list, the top 50 Most Important Games Ever Made. Halo pulled in slot 50 (they're listed in 'roughly chronological order' rather than ranking). Nice! We got this from Rampancy.net, who got it from Joystiq. (Louis Wu 22:22:25 UTC)

X-Play gives Halo 2 the nod
WhitebeardedGnu pointed out that G4TechTV's X-Play had their 'Best of 2004' episode on last night (next showing is today, 4pm ET/1pm PT). Halo 2 was nominated for Best Shooter and Best Game of 2004; it lost the Shooter award to Half-Life 2, but won the Best Game award. Nice! (Louis Wu 16:38:27 UTC)

Halo as an education at Sundance
According to Slashdot, the Red vs Blue crew will participate in a panel discussion on machinima at the end of January at the Sundance film festival, presenting a live demo showing how they produce RvB. Nice! Thanks, full-bore. (The 'feature in the January 2005 issue of Wired' mention has to do with Rooster Teeth's The Strangerhood series, not RvB.) (Louis Wu 20:18:58 UTC)

Upping the quality, and a Kilimanjaro to boot!
TheTaintedOne posted a true widescreen (16:9) video (WMP9 format) captured of a game of FFA Melee Ball (the rules are explained in the forum post). He explained how he created the film in this thread on the HaloTV forum. Takes some higher-end video-editing software... but the results are quite nice! (Louis Wu 03:07:56 UTC)

Third Person View, FOV Increase
Wow, nice. Over on the Gearbox forums, bitterbanana has released a mod that works with both HaloCE and HaloPC - it expands your field of view (works nicely on widescreen monitors) and lets you view yourself from behind (third-person camera). Nice! Thanks, VerdaFolio. (Louis Wu 14:45:33 UTC)

Lothar Hex points out that Gamespy has named Halo 2 its Game of the Month for November 2004. It beats out Half-Life 2, Metroid Prime 2, and Metal Gear Solid 3 for that title. Nice! (Louis Wu 10:37:35 UTC)

Archiving your old XBL stats
There's an interesting news post over at Bungie.net - it addresses some of the fears and desires fans have expressed about long-term stats. Currently, there's no easy way to archive your old stats when Bungie does a purge... and even between purges, there's no way to look at your CUMULATIVE stats (total kills in all games, etc). Bungie.net user Clustered Index has put together an Excel worksheet that helps solve these problems - you can read about it (and download it) from his website. Nice! Update: Apparently, the XML tools needed for this don't exist on all versions of Excel. focused7 sent mail saying you needed "Excel 2003 with a Microsoft Office Professional install" -I hadn't realized things were quite so spread out on the PC side. (On the mac side, you can buy Office. Period. The version of Excel that comes in it uses this worksheet without problems.) Update 2: Eep, I'm wrong; I can VIEW content, but not import it. In order to use this worksheet, your copy of Excel will need XML Import tools. Sorry! (Thanks again to focused7 for setting me straight.) (Louis Wu 13:52:08 UTC)

New Group themes at Bungie.net
Dolbex points out that there are two new themes for groups over at the Seventh Column. I've switched the HBO Junkies to use the Mullins Halo 2 theme, and Dolbex has set Been Mawed to use the Column WW theme, so you can see them both in action. Nice! (Louis Wu 17:27:23 UTC)

Tour Bungie, Help Kids
Gabe, of the Penny Arcade team, posted a note about a charity dinner for Child's Play, an organization devoted to bringing games to sick kids. One of the auction prizes: "Tour of Bungie - How does a monster game like Halo 2 get made? This is your chance to meet the developers and see where the magic happens." Nice! Thanks to Bonekin, who was first with the heads-up. (Louis Wu 11:27:37 UTC)

Kubrick Figure
Several people have pointed out a page on the Japanese Xbox.com site that seems to be about the Halo 2 Kubrick figure; if anyone wants to summarize what the page is about, we'll add it here. (Thanks, enigM@.) Update: Kaboris translated this nicely on our forum. (Thanks, Kaboris!) Apparently, it's a contest open to anyone who bought one of the original 30,000 Limited Edition copies in Japan. (If you bought your copy outside Japan, you're not eligible.) 4000 of these people will get a mini-Kubrick figure; register your serial number to enter. Winners will be notified by mail around January 18, with prizes to be distributed in February. Nice! (Louis Wu 14:30:41 UTC)

Can you read this much news?
There are dozens upon dozens of Halo 2-related stories out there today - here's a sampling:

I tried (with the exception of the New York Times, which SHOULD be an exception) to stay away from articles that required registration to read. There are also new reviews:

  • X-Plays (5/5 - thanks, Frensa Geran)
  • ETBGaming (10/10 - thanks, Anthony Manley)
  • Gamereactor (Swedish, this time; 10/10, thanks again, Victor - and again, beware of spoilers)
  • Update: The BBC gave Halo 2 a 9.5 - nice! Thanks, Stephen Smith

And, of course, comics:

  • Crtl+Alt+Delete (Lothar Hex was first
  • Penny Arcade (thanks, Ross Mills - who also was unhappy by the 'spoiler content' in the attached news article - though I'd suggest that it's only a spoiler if you think it is; you STILL don't know anything)

Whew! That's a lot of news to get through in one shot. (Louis Wu 14:18:41 UTC)

More details on the MTV special
We mentioned this a couple of weeks ago, but the official press release came out yesterday, so here's the word from the top about the upcoming MTV special:

New York, NY - October 27, 2004 - MTV: Music Television today announced that "Making the Video Game: Halo 2" will premiere on MTV on Friday, November 5th at 11:00pm ET/PT, and MTV2 on Saturday, November 6th at 9:00pm ET.  The special will give viewers an unprecedented inside look at the most anticipated video game of 2004.  "Making the Video Game: Halo 2" will go behind the scenes to discover the secrets, the storylines, and the graphics that will keep every last obsessive Halo fan glued to their TV.  The special will also include interviews with the game developers, celebrity Halo fans, and the bands involved in the new soundtrack including Incubus and Hoobastank.  Both the game and soundtrack hit stores on November 9th.

"The MTV audience is the gaming audience," said John Shea, EVP, Sponsorship Development and Integrated Marketing, MTV, VH1, and CMT.  "Halo 2 is destined to be one of the biggest video games of the season and we're excited to give fans a behind the scenes look."

The press release also contained the first official (as far as I know) notice that Halo sales have passed the 5 million mark. Nice! (Louis Wu 10:33:29 UTC)

Top of Boarding Action
Foxygrandpa, Silverspoon, and Ms. Man have made it to the top of Boarding Action. There's a bit of extra hardware involved - some sort of box that allows control of multiple players. There's a video - 32 mb, WMP9 format - showing the details. All this and more can be found in the forum thread at High Impact Halo. Nice! (Louis Wu 20:18:58 UTC)
