haloTV headsets - first 6 out
Wow. WhoKnew, a regular on the #hbo IRC channel and a member of Alpha Base, wanted a Plantronics headset so badly that he wrote a song about it, and submitted it to haloTV. They liked it (it's the Video of the Week), and he got his headset. (So did 5 other people, but more randomly.) Nice! (WMP9 format, streaming.) (Louis Wu 14:09:45 UTC)

Halo leads the charge for Macs in Japan
Interesting... there's an article in Wired about Japan, and the scene for gamers with a Macintosh (it's nearly nonexistent). Looks like Microsoft is planning to change that - they're rolling out a whole series of popular Mac games, and calling it the Microsoft Mac Games Collection. First game on the block? Halo. It was released a couple of days ago.

In a cross-country launch at the Apple stores in Tokyo and Osaka, dozens of gamers battled each other using Halo's networking option and Apple's iChat AV.

Nice! There's more - go read it. Thanks, daedalus. (Louis Wu 12:51:10 UTC)

Halo CE - now with energy swords for all
DocOctavius has released a set of tags for adding the Energy Sword to your Halo CE map project - looks pretty nice! Thanks, MasterGrief. Update: Looks like there's info on our own forum now, too, including a short movie and a small test map. (Louis Wu 13:17:36 UTC)

New Mombasa Classic for Mac users
bobindashadows has managed to convert the New Mombasa Classic map (originally for Halo CE) to work with Mac Halo. (There's also an updated tool for installing custom maps available.) You can't actually play on Halo CE servers (Mac Halo can't see them) - but you CAN play the map itself, with other Mac users. Really nice! Check out the details at Mac Dev. Thanks to Brodingo for pointing it out. (Louis Wu 10:20:57 UTC)

More Transcribed Halo Music
Poop Scoop has transcribed another trio of Halo music pieces - 'The Maw', 'On a Pale Horse', and Edgen's 'Halo: Master and Chief' - and put up the sheet music (in pdf format), a midi version, and a Finale file for each piece. You can find all of this over at Rampancy.net. Nice! Update: I forgot; you won't see a 'download' link on the individual pages unless you're logged in. (Registration is free.) Hangar-X
(GT)Juggler posted a Single player to multiplayer conversion map of the Hangar in the Maw. It's Xbox-only, so you'll need to have a modded Xbox to use it. You can find pictures and a download link on HaloMods. Looks pretty nice! (Louis Wu 09:42:32 UTC)

The Hornet - in action
Hehe - d3fault_dot_xbe has taken one of Roger Wilco's concept models and begun to insert it into Halo CE. Nice! Heads-up goes to MasterGrief, who found it on the Gearbox forums. Remember - Roger Wilco created those models more than 2 years ago. Wonderful! (Louis Wu 14:43:50 UTC)

More Megabattle Pics
The technique pioneered by n00bles continues to inspire; J has posted a pair of screens - quite nice! Check 'em out. Update: and ANOTHER one, from n00bles again! This one is from Claustrophobia, a CE-only level. I've got to grab that... (Louis Wu 09:51:49 UTC)

Now THAT'S a Halo poster.
Dolbex got a poster he won after E3 back from the framers yesterday - you'll find some cool pics in this forum post. Yeah, those will likely be sold by Bungie/Microsft at some point. No, you can't have Dolbex's. Update: Sketchfactor chimed in to say that the licensing arm is close to making a deal, and that as soon as they know these (or posters like them) are available in stores, there'll be a post on Bungie.net. Nice! (Louis Wu 09:17:32 UTC)

deviantARTwork
Deimos, of Subnova, spent a LONG time hunting through deviantART and came up with a list of 17 unique wallpapers that aren't also hosted here. Some of them are quite nice!

(There are others, but they were either submitted to HBO as well, or stolen from other sites (unattributed to the original authors), so we haven't linked to them.) (Louis Wu 01:59:30 UTC)

Halo 2 Music Transcription
Rampancy.net has posted a transcription of the music from the Halo 2 announcement trailer, courtesy of Poop Scoop. 2.5 mb, due to the 8 pages of hi-res jpegs - and there's also a Finale Notepad file containing the whole score. Nice! (Louis Wu 16:01:33 UTC)

Halo breaks the mold
Adam Daniel found an interesting article on the New York Times website (free registration required) which discusses movie-to-game licenses, and why most of the games don't work. Halo is held up more than once as an example of how the model (that you need brand recognition, either because your game has a precursor or because it's based on a mass-market item like a movie) is flawed. Adam points out that we (online Halo fans) get props:

"Everyone is trying to make gaming more mainstream, but it's still the hard-core gamers that get it started. Look at Halo. That's not a franchise sequel or a licensed property, but the word of mouth from the hard-core community really drove the larger market and made it the success that it is."

Nice! Go read. (Louis Wu 15:48:17 UTC)

Time to go to the movies
Wow. Now THERE'S a fun fan. Spideroptics received a keychain countdown timer for 'The Day After Tomorrow' at the movies yesterday; with a bit of printing and cutting, he turned it into something pretty cool. Nice! (Louis Wu 10:48:53 UTC)

Map editing just got easier.
Xhzjang has created a new tool - HMMM, the Halo Map Meta Modifier. It's a patcher program for Halo Map files, but it works by modifying the individual meta files, not just making hex changes. This means you can make patches for multiple maps at one time. Nice! Thanks to Reppyboyo for the heads-up. (Louis Wu 10:09:36 UTC)
