There oughtta be a law...
Bungie's Number One Fan Miguel 'Freewill' Chavez competed in the first round of the Halo National Tournament... and has written up his experiences, complete with pics. Check it out at Bungie Sightings! Correction: Miguel competed in a warm-up event, not the actual tournament. Silly me - the tournament doesn't even start until next week! (Louis Wu 04:37:26 UTC)

Mac Hall and the Xbox
Not fully Halo news... but it's pretty funny: This week's Mac Hall comic at Inside Mac Games focuses on the inline safety release built into each Xbox controller from Microsoft. (Interestingly enough, the Mac Hall general response to this feature characterizes them strongly as PC (as opposed to console) gamers - almost every console gamer I've talked to about this thinks it's brilliant, and that every controller should contain this feature. Hell, I thought it was silly... until the first time I backed away from the screen, trying to avoid that charging Hunter, and accidentally knocked my chair over backwards; that inline release saved a lot of equipment that day (as well as my game; instant pause until I reconnected, giving me time to regain my equilibrium.) It's a good thing, I think... but that doesn't mean it's not fodder for the Mac Hall Funny Machine. :) Plus, it gives 'em a chance to take a shot at the size of the Xbox...) Thanks to Vector40 for the heads-up. (Louis Wu 16:03:12 UTC)

GamingNoise.com says Halo is GotY
Mastasnypa writes to say that GamingNoise.com has given Halo its Game of the Year title - we tried to verify this, but it's actually in a 8.4 MB, 75 minute mp3, and after 6 or 7 minutes of... stuff (none of which had anything to do with the awards), I decided I couldn't listen any more. If you want to listen, though... go for it. Update: Apparently they didn't give Halo Game of the Year awards... just Xbox Game of the Year. (Grand Theft Auto 3 won the whole enchilada.) Thanks to Nijhazer for the heads-up. Second Update: Mastasnypa wanted it clear that the misunderstanding was mine, not his - he stated that GN gave Halo the Xbox game of the year title, and I misread his email. (It's STILL a silly report.) (Louis Wu 05:32:03 UTC)

More Halo oddities...
Deimos™ writes to say that he put sleep ahead of honor and chose to wait until this morning to point out this page at Subnova, a collection of Halo bugs and oddities. Silly man... you can sleep when you're dead. Included are shots from the top of 'Halo', weird rendering bugs, and another picture of the infamous 'secret marine' on 343 GS. (If you don't know what this means, don't follow the link - he's more fun to find on your own.) (Louis Wu 14:38:36 UTC)

Shadow animals?
Lophan points out a fun read - GamesFirst put up an article called 'Notes Scribbled in the Dark While Playing HALO'. That's exactly what it is... some of 'em are great.

Okay, this is silly. The Warthog should be able to climb this hill, but all it does is spin out. Oooh, pretty dirt clods.

Okay, that wasn't the best one, but I didn't want to ruin the ending for you. (Louis Wu 01:26:50 UTC)

Command THIS!
Occasionally, mention is made of Halo's ability to take absurdly high-resolution screenshots. We thought, when we saw the 1920x1440 shots posted by Daily Radar in March, we thought we were seeing an example of this. How silly we were... Bungie has kindly sent along an absurdly high-resolution shot - the original (440K) is 2664x2562 - and this one is obviously shrunk from its original size. Here's the new yellow commander, in all his multi-toothed glory... for those who want more manageable sizes, we've created a 1024x768 version (92K) and a 1280x1024 version (178K) - both padded with black to make the non-standard size fit your desktop. Enjoy!

CD or DVD - depends on market penetration
This is NOT to get your hopes up, or down, or whatever - this is information. Jon Kimmich, Product Planner for Halo, has just begun to look into the format that the PC version will be released in. (The choices are multi-CD or DVD.) Read his post for caveats, and realize the decision will be whatever makes most sense at the time... but also remember that HE'S THINKING ABOUT THE PC VERSION RELEASE. It would be silly for the Halo Product Planner to be thinking about the PC version release if there WASN'T going to be a PC version to be released... so all you doubters out there, heed. TeamXbox Trailer mirror update
TeamXbox trailer mirror update: The files (both the .asf and the .mpg) seem to have disappeared from thecorpse.com... but The Junkyard moves in to fill the void. Ryan 'Mhaddy' Matthews writes to say that the .mpg version is now available on the Junkyard's Downloads page. Thanks, Mhaddy! Update: Silly person that I am, I mistyped the URL to thecorpse.com's mirror page - it's up and running, and has been all day. My mistake - there are more sources than ever for these movies! somethingawful.com goes to E3
Thanks to carbon, who noticed an E3 report over at somethingawful.com. Lowtax didn't like Halo very much:

The climax-inducing title Halo, which has been causing gamers across three universes to collectively wet their Spider-Man underoos, looked like crud. Take a generic FPS, add the maps from Giants, subtract 80 frames a second, and you've got Halo. But hey, you get to drive in a JEEP! Around a LAKE! Wow! It's as revolutionary as everybody claimed it would be! JEEP + LAKE + ALIENS + GUNS = GOOD.

It's a funny read, even if it's silly. (Louis Wu 18:35:18 UTC)

Second round of Gamestock Q&A posted
Took a few days, but Matt's sent along the second round of answers to some of the questions you guys asked with regard to the Gamestock material. Some good news, some bad news, some just plain silly news. An interesting tidbit:

For Gamestock we put in an artificial framerate cap at 30 FPS because we didn't want to demo with an FPS rate that varied widely from moment to moment. That artificial limit is actually well within the limits of the hardware, as you might imagine.

Go read the whole thing, and discuss! (Louis Wu 23:09:11 UTC)

The Lion Awakes
Has nobody got faith in your trusty webmaster? Bungie.net is running a new quick poll:

All this talk of rioting in the streets has led us to wonder which of the following fans would win in a fight. Who'd you put your money on?

  • Miguel 'Freewill' Chavez
  • Tyson 'Ferrex' Green
  • Claude 'Louis Wu' Errera
  • Hamish 'Godot' Sinclair

Good Lord... even Hamish has more votes than I do! I'm a monster in the cage... they wouldn't stand a chance! Go cast your vote for me, and show that silly Yeroen guy who's boss. (Louis Wu 14:07:56 UTC)

Matt says Listen the first time!
Tempest in a Teapot, Part Deux: Okay, this has nothing to do with the other rumor discussed recently... but it sure is silly. Recently, Matt Soell went on an answering spree at Rampancy.net... and tossed out this comment, in response to a question about what operating system the bungie.net servers might move to:

We've spoken to a couple people here who've made snarfy comments about us not using an MS server for b.net and we've ignored them. The most important thing is the integrity of the product. If MS were to produce a server OS that ran faster and crashed less than any of the unix variants out there in a series of independent tests, we'd use it.

Inside Mac Games picked up the comment this morning, and by lunchtime, it was on Slashdot. There are now over 200 comments about that article there... many assuming the worst. Matt clarified the original comment at R.net, for those who missed the point the first time... we ALL need to remember that the rumors that fly sometimes are just that... rumors. Bottom line: bungie.net runs on linux servers now, and will continue to do so, despite the fact that they're running at Microsoft. And Matt's getting tired of being misinterpreted. :) (Louis Wu 20:26:40 UTC)

Microsoft says Mac and PC... of course!
Thanks once again to Luxor, of the Vault Network, who found this Microsoft press release that confirms Bungie's commitment to bring Halo not just to the Mac, but to PCs. Silly rumors going around... as Ed Fries says,

"We are particularly pleased to honor Bungie's commitment to make ground-breaking games like 'Halo' available to gamers on all platforms, including the Macintosh."

Shame on all you doubters! (Louis Wu 13:35:27 UTC)
