Halo 2 The Movie
WINBIG24 sent word about a trailer for download over at HaloMods. It was created by ShadowX, and it uses our Cutscene Library (and a War of the Worlds trailer) to paint a grim picture of invasion. 5.9 mb, in WMP9 format. (Might have been better to keep the widescreen aspect of the originals, though...) Update: Seems ShadowX posted a link on our own forum - silly me for not checking first. (Louis Wu 14:50:56 UTC)

Multiplayer Launching... oddness.
Wow. Devin Olsen posted a pair of vids last night that... well, go watch 'em. Bizarre multiplayer glitch leads to some really, really odd (but fun-to-watch) behavior. c0ld vengeance suggests this might have negative effects on gameplay - but I'm having trouble seeing how, at the moment. For now, it's silly but fun. (WMP9 format; if there's enough demand, I'll whip up a QT version.) (Louis Wu 18:31:59 UTC)

Maybe he needed a ruby.
MereCatfish decided to write up his OWN Halo 2-buying experience. See how many times you ask the screen "what... are you an idiot?" (I think I got to 6.) (All in fun, Mere - but man, you DID do some silly things.) (Louis Wu 03:22:20 UTC)

Reviews and news
Last Thursday, BOLL sent us a note about a Halo review at Tom's Hardware; they didn't actually have the review up, they had a page that said 'we're not sleeping until this review is finished! Keep refreshing this page!' Every day, I went back. Nothing. Finally, today, Zaknafein pointed out that they'd put a review up - at a different URL! Doh. (If the URL is anything to go by, they posted it on the 13th.) There's no overall rating - but they loved the audio and gameplay, liked the graphics, weapons, A.I., and story, were okay with the vehicles, and thought the level design needed work. Other reviews around the net today:

And geez, while we're here, let's get the Halo 2 press from around the net out of the way:

  • BYU NewsNet - release coverage
  • Paly Voice - release coverage
  • Daily Times (Philadelphia) - Halo 2's popularity
  • IGN - A Second Look (Editors revisit their thoughts)
  • GamesIndustry.biz - Halo 2 has sold more than a quarter million units in the UK in its first week (3rd fastest selling title on record)
  • The Daily Northwestern (Illinois) - silly article about people having Halo stolen (among lots of other stuff)

I'm sure there'll be more as time goes on. (Louis Wu 14:25:40 UTC)

Silly old duffer, eh?
rockslider has added a Halo dictionary to his site - it's called 'Halo in a nutshell', and it's pretty dang funny. Go read some. (Louis Wu 21:27:56 UTC)

IGN - Filling the Days
IGN has decided to prepare for Halo 2 by posting Halo 2 content every day until release. The first article is 'Ten Things To Do While Waiting for Halo 2'. It's pretty much as silly as it sounds. (There's also an article about the Halo 2 soundtrack, but most of it is the explanation Marty posted on our forum, and then later again on The Marty Army chapter of the 7th Column.) Halo 2 German Launch Promotion
Markus Tacker lets us know about a Halo 2 launch promotion in Frankfurt, Germany:

this morning I noticed a black Poster on a wall in the subway station Hauptwache showing the Master Chief and the headline "Are you ready to save the world?" (in german). On the bottom there were snippets to be ripped of (similar to these announcements searching for apartments) with an accesscode and the website url http://www.rettediewelt.com printed on it.

The access code is 010678DR.

You will find a nice flash with great sound and some silly games (text is german) promoting the launch party in munich.

I tried that access code, and got rejected; there were more prompts, but I couldn't read them. If you read German, give it a shot! Update: I guess it matters which browser you use. Worked fine in Firefox. If you can guess your way through the answers to the subsequent quiz, you can get a Halo 2 countdown wallpaper. Thanks to everyone who helped out. (Louis Wu 10:43:05 UTC)

Wallpapers
A couple of months ago, I cleared out the Wallpaper and Misc Art queues, and vowed not to let them get so backed up. Then I went and made a silly promise to someone - that I'd finish the backlogged Movies database before I added any more new content to either of these sections. This, of course, guaranteed another backup. Today, I begin the cleanout. I'll be adding 10 wallpapers a day to the Wallpaper section until we're clear. The first batch is up now - follow that link. Quashing Typos Before They Matter
Before anyone goes overboard... 1up.com has recently overhauled their website, and one of the things that changed was the listed release date for Halo 2. (They currently have it listed as December 15, 2004.) Normally, silly release dates on random websites are ignored by us... but 1up is a pretty big site (they're the web presence for several major gaming magazines (Electronic Gaming Monthly, Computer Gaming World, Xbox Nation), and this listed date is newly changed, which might lend credence to the date even among people who normally would scoff. Not to worry - Bungie has confirmed (as of about 5 minutes ago) that the date has NOT changed - November 9th is still the day of reckoning. (Louis Wu 17:35:28 UTC)

Halo2.com gets updated
Microsoft's Halo 2 splash site (Halo2.com) has been updated - all the new Game Informer screenshots have been added, as well as that amazing Eddie Smith artwork that showed up in the Swedish SuperPlay print article. (It can be found under 'Screenshots', which is sort of silly... but I guess they don't have a 'Wallpaper' section.) There's also a new section on awards and press accolades. Thanks to Fuzion for pointing out the wallpaper (and getting me to look through the site again). Update: there's a higher-res version of the Eddie Smith art (1600x844, with no black border) in the Bungie.net Halo 2 Print Art section. Thanks, Tocki (of Halo Orbit) and Deimos (of Subnova)! No silly title necessary
At the conclusion of Microsoft's press conference, a ton of new Halo 2 content hit the net. Firstly, Bungie.net has 8 new screenshots from the Zanzibar level being shown off at E3. Secondly, there's some info on the Halo 2 Limited Edition, which was only just revealed at the event. Thirdly, TeamXBox was the first site to post a shakycam video of the Halo 2 portion of the event, which is available in 4 parts here. That ought to keep you all busy for a while :P (Count Zero 06:19:39 UTC)

Who's got the better armor?
Battleground: Halo points out a Grudgematch on the front page of PlanetAVP; 'Halo vs The Exosuit'. (I guess they probably mean 'MJOLNIR armor vs The Exosuit' - it's sort of silly to pit an entire game against a single item from a different game.) Whatever they meant, I find it amusing that as of right now, Halo is beating AVP on its own site (53% of 726 votes). (Louis Wu 13:30:41 UTC)

Content, Content, Content
The Bungie Weekly Update this week went to... well, Bungie. (NEPOTISM!) You can find Frankie's musings on the Underground, Bungie's very own public forum. It's short - but it's tasty. The tidbit on realism on 'an Earth level' left me drooling for actual gameplay... the bit about Jaime fine-tuning Enemy AI got me intrigued, and the bit about Marty had me laughing. And oh, yeah, the Mister Chief artwork hits new edges of quality. And if the update weren't enough, there's also (finally) a new, hi-res screenshot, the one that's been floating around the net for a couple of weeks in illicit magazine scans. All the arguments about 'is that really a needler?' and 'wait, who's falling?' and the like seem rather silly now, with a 1600x1200 reference piece to look at... what? You're still here? Why aren't you at Bungie.net, reading? (Louis Wu 00:56:30 UTC)

Best Buy Bundle - now cheaper
Back in November, we reported about a bundle being marketed by Best Buy - a controller and a DVD with Halo material on it. At the time, it was $19.99. (The DVD contained no 'new' material - but it did contain a hi-res version of the 'Inside the Xbox' documentary that showed at X03 last year, and that we put online in December.) By Christmas, we had reports that this bundle had jumped up to $39.99; it wasn't such a great deal at $20, it seemed like a silly purchase at $40. Well, Bentllama, your friendly neighborhood Halo 2 animator, happened to notice that TechBargains is reporting that Best Buy has dropped the price to $8.99, shipped free. Now it's not such a bad deal! (Louis Wu 10:28:40 UTC)

Hi, I'm Isbe 'Uwudee... who are you?
A week or so ago, in a lighthearted forum thread, Wado SG pointed out a silly little app that would give you your very own Bond Girl name. Stuntmutt was entranced. Unfortunately, he's an artist and a comedian, not a programmer. Hmm. Let's try that again. Unfortunately, he's not a programmer. There we go. Anyway, he contacted BOLL, our resident... something, who whipped together a little tool; now, thanks to these two, you can have your very own Elite Name! (Color, too.) Check out the HBO Elite Namelizer... fun for the whole family! (Louis Wu 09:58:48 UTC)

Grunt Plushys for All!
Okay, in general, I think online petitions are silly. However, I'm willing to make an exception this time... because of the subject, and because of who's putting it forth. SketchFactor jumped on our forum yesterday to suggest that the reason there's never been a Grunt Plushy is because the marketing folks don't believe there's a demand... and he offered an online petition for interested parties to sign. If you, like me, would love to get your hands on a soft Grunt Plushy collectible... sign this now! (There are 155 signatures as of this writing. Let's crank that up a notch.) Halo Reviews
A couple more reviews for you - Hatekill loved the AI, thought the graphics were too simple, Gametactics thought the 2-gun limit was bogus. Also, Gamestar Magazine (in Germany) reviewed the game, and gave it an 87% (though they're running a silly petition to get Gearbox to add coop play - as though Gearbox wasn't ALREADY doing their damnedest to add it). Thanks, Shacknews, Blue's News, and Uriel.Update: Malcolm Owen, the author of the GameTactics review, writes to correct my interpretation of his opinion on the 2-weapon system.

[...] I meant it as in it is an interesting game ruling which forces the player to think and work out which weapon outweighs what depending on their circumstances.

Sorry about that; his biggest complaint is actually that the game isn't as impressive as it would have been a year ago. (Louis Wu 09:49:44 UTC)

Cookie weirdness...
Sorry, folks. You may have noticed that your spoiler settings reverted recently to 'No Spoilers' - though you hadn't done anything about them. This is due to the September 30th, 2003 expiration date that cookie held. Silly me. It's been reset (to December 31, 2004 - we'll figure out if things need to change before that date arrives); in the meantime, simply hit the 'Change this!' link above to reset your spoiler cookie. (You may have to run it through twice; the first time resets the date, the second time the cookie grabs. It seems to vary by browser; when your banner shows green on the main page, all is well.) Hosting, and not hosting...
Okay, it's been a while since I've found time to rummage through the submissions - and for that, I apologize. Lots of people have been waiting for substantial chunks of time to see their work displayed for the Halo community... and I've been lax about getting it up there. However, our uploads folders (and email) are filled with material which we have to toss, as well... and this makes me sad. Some of it is just that folks aren't paying attention to the existing guidelines... but some of it is that we've never outlined what isn't acceptable. So I'm doing that now. First up, some rules to remember:

  • Movies that are submitted in WMP9 version ONLY (that is, without a corresponding MPEG, or AVI, or whatever) will not be posted. This rule is in effect until Microsoft releases WMP9 codecs for operating systems other than their own.
  • Movies that are simply collections of tricks, or that are rehashes of existing films we've posted in the past, will not be posted. You're welcome to find your own hosting, and send us a link; we're happy to announce it to the community. We cannot provide you with bandwidth, however.
  • Items that are uploaded to our ftp or http uploads folders without attribution will not be posted. If we don't know who you are... we're not putting your work up. We'd like an email address (even if you don't want it listed with your work; we're happy to withhold it)... but we NEED a name, at least.

And while we're at it... uploading halo.jpg or readme.doc or description.txt is sort of silly... remember that our Wallpaper section has almost 1000 items in it, Miscellaneous Art isn't far behind; name your work (AND its accompanying text file) appropriately. Thanks. Now as for things that we've not addressed yet:

  • Red vs Blue artwork (wallpaper, disc covers, logos, you name it) are really not appropriate for HBO. RvB has their own website, and a forum to post tribute work. Please use it.
  • Windows executables will no longer be accepted. Once upon a time, we took some mini-games folks created... but the last item we tried to test totally hosed the Windows emulator I had running here, and in today's virus-strewn world, it's simply not worth our time or effort to ensure that your mini-game is safe for public consumption. Please don't upload them - we won't post them.

Material listed above - the stuff we won't post - is simply discarded; we probably won't contact you to tell you we're not posting it. (In the vast majority of cases, we CAN'T contact you, because you haven't bothered to include an email address.) If you feel that you've uploaded something that we SHOULD have posted, but didn't - please don't upload it again - simply drop us an email, asking us what happened to it. (Be sure to identify it clearly.) We'll get back to you about why it wasn't posted, or post it if it was simply overlooked. (Because yeah, we do make mistakes sometimes.) Hopefully this clarifies the issue somewhat. I'll do my best to get the recent stuff put up soon. (Louis Wu 14:25:13 UTC)

You want movies? We got movies.
We didn't release any movies yesterday because I was out of town... but here are a few more from the queue. These have all been released on their own already - but bandwidth might have been tight, or you might have chosen not to download them because we weren't hosting them. (That may sound silly to some of you... but one side effect of our Movie Posting Guidelines is that if we choose not to host a movie, some visitors choose to conserve their bandwidth and pass on the movie altogether.) Anyway, here you go:

  • 300 Meter Flag Throw - SleekShadow has taken the trick shown in Maverick's recent CTF 2 movie and applied it on the Blue side of Blood Gulch - for a total distance of 300 meters (half again as far as the throw Maverick showed with the red flag). Original details are here. 6.6 mb, QT5.
  • Sidewinder Saga - series trailer. Original description is here. 5.8 mb, QT5.
  • FTC Episodes 1,2,and 3 - Fire Team Charlie has put out three very different (but all very funny) vids; we're mirroring them. (The originals are here. Video 1 was first described here, Video 2 here, and Video 3 here. Mac users will need to run these through DivX Doctor II to be able to hear them properly.

Hmm... let's see, that's 36.6 mb of videos - but luckily, some of you already have these. Grab the ones you don't! (Please, for the sake of our bandwidth, actually CHECK to see if you have these; don't waste Mythica's freely-given bandwidth if you don't need the files... it would be terrible if the resource were yanked because folks were too lazy to conserve.) Coming tomorrow - new content (that is, not seen before on other sites). (Louis Wu 19:00:00 UTC)

Sarge Rocks
lol - When I saw the headline from Bungie.net ('Happy (Belated) Warthog Day!'), I thought, in my Halo-saturated mind, that Bungie was paying tribute to the one-year anniversary of Randy Glass' Warthog Jump. Silly me - I forgot there's a world outside these walls! And every year on February 2, Punxsutawney Phil goes looking for his shadow... this year, in honor of the little 'hog, Bungie has posted a warthog-related comic, starring some of our favorite Halo characters. Check it out! (Louis Wu 09:19:12 UTC)

Don't try this at home
On October 25th, jackass the movie opened in theaters. Within three days, we'd received two submissions parodying this film. Our limited bandwidth resources required that we choose one... Kevin Kranzky has created a 6:45, 32.5 mb film that looks at stupid Halo stunts. Some of it's hilarious, some of it is kind of silly... but then, I'd guess that can be said about the MTv film, as well, right? It's currently being hosted by Mythica.org and the Psynjir.com hotline server, but it's a big'un, so if you've got space, and would like to help out, let us know! Update: CYBRFRK has put a copy up at Cybrfrk'n. Thanks! Update 2: GJ has supplied another mirror, courtesy of Fantazm. Woohoo! (This one's in Europe.) Full mirror list coming at some point.
