The snarkiness of critics
Wow, what a nasty shot. Some guy writes a daily blog on MS stuff - and in a paragraph making fun of MSN as a portal (and some of the silly things they tried in an attempt to gain market share), he made this snide comment:

Those days are largely laughed about today, in the same way that we might make fun of such other ill-advised products as Microsoft Bob or the Halo 2 Soundtrack (the latter of which, inexplicably, includes little actual music from the game).

He must have been talking about Volume 1, since Volume 2 is ALL game music (and since its Amazon Sales Rank was #154 in Music - out of three quarters of a million titles)... but still. Geez. (Louis Wu 00:39:24 UTC)

What? No Pony?
IGN has put together yet another Halo 3 wishlist - and if they got everything they asked for, Halo 3 would be a pretty silly game. (It would probably also be able to make you a margarita during play - which might not be a bad thing.) IGN's gotta sell pageviews, though, and you can't do that without creating content - so no matter how silly it is to suggest that you should be able to pilot a starship in a first-person shooter... there you go. Thanks, Jackal Fister. (Louis Wu 16:16:25 UTC)

April Fools - the Wrapup
So, yeah. It's April 2... which means the silliness that is April 1 is over again, for another year. For those who might be more optimistic than discerning, the following stories were (for better or worse) not real: Halo on the PSP, Halo - the MMO, One One Se7en: the Book (I think), The Squadron Ep 17, Halo for the DS, the Helljumpers' pink makeover, the silly Xboxic story, and Halo 2 on OSX. Everything else was legit. If you wondered why HBO didn't seem to do anything this year (even the MMO press release wasn't ours - Ross Mills wrote that), it's pretty silly - we DID do something, but it got spoiled at the last minute by someone posting it on our forum. I didn't have any time left to paper over the damage - so it was easier to just pass on it. Seems silly to totally waste the work, though - c0ld, KP and I spent a goodly chunk of time on it (some of us more than others)... so you can view it here, for posterity. It ain't perfect... but it was sort of fun. Maybe next year we'll have better luck. (Louis Wu 03:59:10 UTC)

Eddie Smith is AMAZING.
Short (but pretty sweet) update this week, over at Bungie.net - soon-to-be-updated playlists, detailed info about the Soundtrack Volume 2, some KILLER artwork, and some nice case mods. And a Mister Chief that makes me wonder what Frankie does on his off hours. Go read - either at Bungie.net, or right here, in the Weekly Update Archive. I haven't even had time to visit the forum, but I'd BET there's a 'First!' from Frankie there... of course there is. (Silly me for even talking about it.) (Louis Wu 01:01:54 UTC)

I cannae hold her, Captain!
Okay, I'm thinking of changing the website name:

Don't be silly.

What do you think? A couple of days ago, Kotaku posted this note, suggesting that Gamestop stores around the US got an email stating firmly that Halo 3 would not be out in 2006. (A million of you sent this in, linked from many sites - I was going to ignore it altogether, until...) Yesterday, a DIFFERENT site (HEXUS.gaming? Never heard of 'em) posted a note stating that Halo 3 was actually finished, and held at the replicators, awaiting the go-ahead from Microsoft before being manufactured and delivered. We've got a 'too early' and 'too late'... I'm waiting for Baby Bear's prediction. Do I need to remind you that until Bungie says something, everything you read is subject to correction? I hope not. He's Sorry. Really.
Last night, the MPRRS failed - by a tiny margin - a submission by our own Cybrfrk. (I think they penalized him for lack of vowels.) I watched the film... and it was silly. Silly enough to make me laugh. I have a soft spot in my heart for the song that makes up the majority of its soundtrack. You can grab it in WMP9 format (10.7 mb) or QuickTime format (10.8 mb). And if you find it silly, too... good. Update: Looks like Cybrfrk had planned to resubmit this, incorporating the feedback of the reviewers. (Whoa - surprise... the guy who RUNS the section actually believes in the ideas behind it!) My bad - he's going to have a fixed version up soon. We'll swap it in for this (and make a note of the swap) when he's done. Update 2: Links are back up - sorry for the delay! (Louis Wu 19:29:04 UTC)

Looks like false advertising to me...
In the spirit of silly things done by retail stores to get your business, Pat Hillman took a cameraphone snapshot of a box he saw in his local FYE. This, to me, seems to be going just a bit too far... (Louis Wu 14:27:08 UTC)

McDonalds, Cheetos, and Teabags.
Frankie wrote up a summary of statistics about Halo 2 on Xbox Live - and while it's chock-full of the normal things you'd expect (like what percentage of arranged games are played on each map), it's also got just plain silly stats, like how much money would have been earned if every hour spent playing matchmaking had been spent, instead, earning minimum wage, or how much you'd make if you had a nickel for every game, or how close to Reach you'd get if you stacked a penny for every second played. (Well, maybe not that last one. But that's only because he didn't think of it.) He's also inordinately proud of beating everyone to the punch with the news - cause yeah, he POSTED it. But he's like that. Go read. Update: Skavenger found a few more facts you might be interested in... (Louis Wu 01:47:13 UTC)

This is just plain silly.
You gotta love what gets harped on when Microsoft is involved... there's a story over at Stuff.co.nz focusing on the fact that the server farm that renders Weta's special effects is running Linux. Why is this news? Oh, because it means that Linux will play a major role in an upcoming Microsoft movie. Whee... Thanks to [HC]D-Man for the heads-up. (Louis Wu 13:22:20 UTC)

The Squadron Ep 5: Location Location Location
Broken Console Productions has posted Episode 5 of their ongoing machinima, The Squadron - grab it from their Videos page. Things are about to heat up... writing is a fun mixture of serious and silly, filming is topnotch. Go watch! (19.3 mb in WMP9 format, 18.1 in QT.) (Louis Wu 16:32:52 UTC)

Too many planes in too few hours
I'm back - thanks to Ding for minding the store while I was gone. I did a pretty silly thing (though not one i regret for a second) - I went on a spur-of-the-moment trip across the US to attend the moving-in party Bungie was holding at their new digs in Kirkland, WA. (We've mentioned the move a couple of times - you can check our news for more info.) As I mentioned in a forum post last night, I was pretty darned impressed with the new space; it's gorgeous, well-thought-out, spacious, and productivity-enhancing. And such. Anyway, I'm home, and though I'm taking the evening off to attend a function with my wife, I WILL be doing my best to catch up on all news since Friday - probably tomorrow. For those who missed it, there was a Weekly Update posted at B.net last night, as usual - as of 3 pm yesterday afternoon, there were over 8500 Hurricane Katrina shirts sold, for a Red Cross donation total of over $120,000. WOW. (I got a look at some of the auction items that will be made available soon - man, I hope these go for what they're worth, because that will be a LOT of money.) There's also info on the Halo movie, music, stuff they won't talk about, and Matchmaking playlists. And of course, a Mister Chief piece - in fact, one you'll be able to bid on soon. Go read! Story - and why it matters
There's a great piece over at Gamasutra, discussing the concept of Story in the context of video games - why the story is important, how games differ from the media that came before, what the developer can do to improve the experience for the player. Halo is held up as an example of Story Done Right (though I was amused to see a Bungie employee quote - about Halo, no less - used derisively as an example of how the industry has done things wrong up to now). Give this a read, and see if you agree! (Seems silly to point it out at this stage - but there are Halo-related spoilers in this one.) Thanks to 3Suns for the heads-up. (Louis Wu 15:41:00 UTC)

Bunker 27 Episode 1
Not long ago, Goose submitted Bunker 27 Episode 1, "In the Beginning", to our Movie Peer Review Rating System. The vid didn't pass, but he got a decent amount of useful feedback; he went back, re-edited the film to fix some of the problems reviewers noted, and resubmitted. Second time's the charm; this one made it through. Nice visual effects, silly humor, good filming. If there's anyone stupider than Donut out there... it's Goose. (The character, not the real-life filmmaker.) Grab this in WMP9 format (31.2 mb, mythica.org | bungie.org) or QuickTime format (27.8 mb, bungie.org | mythica.org) and enjoy! If you like it, they'll make more. (They'll probably make more anyway, actually. They said they would, anyway.) (Louis Wu 16:21:31 UTC)

Flame War - Blood on the Snow
Yesterday, Yaksha visited our forums to let us know that Sponsors vs Freeloaders, Episode 7: 'Flame War - Blood on the Snow' was available for download at their website. Downloads were painfully slow, though, due to demand... so they put up a smaller version. However, it's pretty darned impressive at full res, so we're tossing up a pair of mirrors for the high-res version (76.9 mb, mythica.org | bungie.org), and adding a pair of high-res QuickTime mirrors (68.9 mb, bungie.org | mythica.org). Go grab this; it's filmed in Halo CE, and it's really well done. (It helps if you've watched previous episodes; the storyline makes very little sense otherwise.) They've REALLY gotten away from their silly, mostly-for-a-lark roots; this story turns deadly serious near the end of this episode. Definitely up there with the best of 'em. Jump Tactics Spoof: Episode 4
A few days ago, Halogrid.com released Jump Tactics Spoof: Episode 4 - and at the same time, submitted it to our Movie Peer Review Rating System. The MPRRS reviewers are taking a bit longer than they used to to review films - but last night, they passed this video, enjoying things like the modded content, the lack of a HUD, and the silly humor. It's not so much of a real jumping vid spoof, as it is just a bunch of folks getting together and doing silly things... but they do a nice job, and it's put together well. It's 11:13 long, and weighs in at 73.1 mb (WMP9) or 75.0 mb (QT)... big! Go grab a copy. In addition to the four mirrors listed at Halogrid.com, we can add these two for the WMP9 version: mythica.org | bungie.org. Also, we've put up a QuickTime version for those who can't deal with WMP9 - you can grab it here: bungie.org | mythica.org. Enjoy! (Louis Wu 16:57:41 UTC)

Game On
XerxdeeJ posted a note about updates on Tied The Leader, his Halo-related blog. I swung by - and there are quite a number. Profiled XBL personalities, women gamers who can kick his butt, silly things you hear on XBL, a disturbing Halo 2 clan, and how multiplayer gaming has evolved over the years are just a few of the new bits. Go read! (Louis Wu 15:29:26 UTC)

Strong The Farce Is With This One.
With the release of Revenge of the Sith recently, there's been some silly Star Wars/Halo arguments on our forum (okay, maybe not silly, but... no, silly). Stuntmutt joins in with a new One One Se7en. (To be fair to him, he never really intended this to see the light of day - if it makes you groan, blame me.) (Louis Wu 13:49:55 UTC)

Moore on Xbox
Peter Moore talked to GameDaily - mostly it's about Xbox stuff, but Halo gets a few mentions; there's a discussion about the impetus behind the I Love Bees promotion, and a look at backwards compatibility, with Halo and Halo 2 being the only two named titles at the moment promised to work on the 360. There's also a clarification of the silly '1 billion users' quote from last week. (Louis Wu 09:49:18 UTC)

Halo 3 touted by Bill Gates
I woke up this morning to an absurdly-full mailbox. Yeah, there was a lot of spam... but there were also hundreds (literally) of notes about the Gamespot article which recounts that Time Magazine quotes Bill Gates confirming Halo 3, to be released at or near the release of Sony's Playstation 3 next year. Bungie STILL hasn't weighed in on this one - but it's a little silly to say 'even Bill GATES has no say in release dates'. We're still gonna keep you apprised of the OFFICIAL announcement, when it eventually comes... but please - we've seen this article, and the dozens of articles like it, all over the web; we've now front-paged the news... so you can stop sending us the link. New maps - available already
Word was that the downloadable content would be available by morning-ish, PST, today - but we just got a report (thanks, Jinno) that it's already up, at least in some places. Remember - they're staggering it, so you might not see it right away. Update: Doh - looks like folks have been downloading for hours. Silly me. (Louis Wu 12:12:30 UTC)

Noobs Gone Wild 2
Bonekin posted Noobs Gone Wild 2, a humorous look at silly gameplay (mistakes made both by him and by his opponents - everyone's speared equally) yesterday. (Download links are in the forum post.) We've put up mirrors for his WMP9 versions (hi-res | low-res), and added QuickTime versions that are roughly the same quality as his MPEG versions, but half the size (hi-res, 28.6 mb | low-res, 14.1 mb). Grab what makes sense to you! (Louis Wu 19:27:45 UTC)

File Mirrors
A couple of recent, large movies have been mirrored - if you've had trouble getting either of these, try again. Nirvana points out that the high-res version of the Ogres Halo 2 montage (previously only available via BitTorrent - though a lower-res version could be grabbed via http) is now mirrored at Halo-vids.tk (along with a second BT seed). And Halo Planet has mirrored the Jump Tactics' Techniques Tutorial Pt. 2 - you can find it on FilePlanet. Always nice to see extra bandwidth! Update: Eep - I almost forgot (silly me, I encoded it myself) - Jump Tactics has put up a QuickTime version of the video, as well; 23.5 mb. (Louis Wu 15:11:09 UTC)

Sales slowdown
According to this Reuters article, Halo 2 hit 6.4 million in sales worldwide today. (This seems silly; the article was posted at 4:30 am PT Thursday, and states that Microsoft 'said [this] on Thursday' - hopefully they meant Wednesday, or MS PR folks are working REALLY odd hours.) If this number is accurate, it means that in the two weeks since the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas (where Bill Gates touted the 6.3 million units sold at THAT point), only 100,000 units have been sold worldwide... a significant drop in sales rate. Bah. All these numbers are silly. Let's look again in March, or something. (Louis Wu 14:15:25 UTC)
