Timeline discrepancies to be cleaned up
Hmm... another quarter heard from. Over on the Marathon's Story page forum, there's been quite a bit of discussion about the leaked Halo backstory information (more, disappointingly, than in our own forum, actually), and a new name has surfaced - Eric Trautmann. Eric seems to be responsible for - at the very least - cleaning up and tying together the details behind the Halo storyline. He also passes on some info about the Halo novel we mentioned last month. It's a little surprising that the name has never surfaced before... but more importantly, Eric makes it clear that the XML file discovered last week had some date discrepancies which were scheduled to be fixed - so the reconciliation between the Halo and Marathon timelines shouldn't be considered to be a closed subject. Hmm... Go read his post for the details. (Louis Wu 08:55:35 UTC)

Top 10 Xbox games?
The official Xbox Magazine website relaunched recently... and one of their features is a Top 10 Game Ranker. Currently Halo is second, behind DOA3. Hmm... (Louis Wu 12:33:25 UTC)

Zartman and Bungie - working together
Hmm... curiouser and curiouser. Last week, Matt Soell mentioned the name of Doug Zartman in his Halo Update... and Hamish Sinclair wondered out loud about it on the Marathon's Story Page. Well, today Matt clarified the comment - seems Doug, in his capacity as part of Microsoft's Intellectual Property group, is doing quite a bit of Halo-related work these days... nice to see old names come together. (Check the What's New section for August 28th for full details.) (Louis Wu 20:58:33 UTC)

T3 looks at Xbox (and Halo)
Fernando notes on our forum that this month's T3 magazine (UK edition) contains a piece on the Xbox, and a small mention of Halo:

"Halo (bungie)

First-person shooter meets armoured vehicular combat. With its deformable terrain, awesome squad AI, and incredibly expansive visitas, Halo is sure to offer a single and multiplayer experience that will be out of this world."

Hmm... that deformable terrain bit seems unlikely, since it's never been mentioned before... (Louis Wu 07:28:02 UTC)

MSNBC looks at RS2 (and Halo)
Thanks to Lurker, who noticed (over on R.net's forum) a Halo mention in the mainstream press: MSNBC has an article that looks at Rogue Squadron 2 for the GameCube - and it looks at Halo, in comparison:

In fact, many of Microsoft's games are shaping up nicely as the company prepares for its fall launch. Halo, a game that I once wrote off as a mistake in Microsoft's marketing, may just be good enough to break the curse that has vexed first-person shooters on video game consoles. (With the notable exception of Goldeneye 007 on Nintendo 64, no first-person shooter has ever made it into the top 10 games for annual sales.)
With horizons that look more like Roger Dean posters than video game art, Halo looks spectacular. It has oceans with rolling ripples, amazing lighting effects that include real light physics when you use flashlights, and all kinds of intelligent monsters to battle.
Halo may not look quite as realistic as RS2, but organic environments with plants, rocks, and humans are harder to recreate than synthetic scenes like Death Stars. And people are much harder to make than fighter craft. In other words, Halo is an ambitious project that was more suited for computers than video game consoles - and Microsoft may yet pull it off.

Hmm... a game showing people, and outdoor scenes, doesn't look as realistic as one showing fighter spacecraft? I'm not sure that's exactly what he meant to say... (Louis Wu 22:29:08 UTC)

Halo interview
Halo interview. IGN Xbox interviews Bungie's John Howard and Joseph Staten. Thanks to Massa for the heads up. Here's a piece:

IGN Xbox: Because the guys at IGN PC threatened us with death if we didn't ask, what's up with the PC version? Will they see it before the Covenant invades earth?

JS: Given that it will be hundreds of years before the first Covenant recon picket stumbles across our most distant colony world--yes, absolutely! Oh man, we're all pushing so hard to get the XBOX version out on time, we really have zero time to think actively about the PC and Mac versions. But they're always in the back of our minds. You know: "hmm...how should I do 'x' so itŐll be relatively easy to implement on the PC/Mac?" Tell the IGN PC guys to keep the faith, and we'll get back to you, OK?

New look at an old symbol
Mike Sholl wants to know why there isn't more talk about the symbol that appears on the back of the Red Covenant in last year's E3 movie. While it's true that Hamish Sinclair has put together a collection of observations of those symbols, nobody's abstracted them like Mike did (67K). Hmm... that DOES look sort of familiar... More PC musings
And the questioning begins... Tom Van Sinden writes

A couple of observations:

That glowing red light is a Microsoft Optical mouse.

PC build?
Things that make you go 'hmm...' Readers of the Marathon's Story page might remember that in the series of webcam movies Hamish has been posting for a couple of weeks, there was a missing day... and David Candland (part of the Online team) wrote to tell Hamish that that particular day,

"That timeframe is more eventful than one would guess. My oldest son had a soccer game at 4:00 that afternoon. I brought my 2 boys in to the office to kill some time since we were already in town. They played games and got to play the gamestock build of Halo while they were here."

Today, that missing movie showed up... and it's interesting, to say the least. The relevant timeframe (as readable at the top of the image) is Sat Mar 10 14:45 to 15:53 (at which point, a divider is moved in front of the camera, obscuring the view)... and as Hamish points out, it certainly LOOKS as though the kids are playing on a PC, with a keyboard and mouse... Remember, we don't actually KNOW anything about this situation, this is all just speculation, from a series of highly compressed, low-resolution webcam pics, but still... Pax. Just watching the game...
Big thanks to Geoff Grosenbach, who scanned in the Seattle Times front page photo mentioned yesterday. You can see it here. Geoff asks

Do you think they're really playing the game? I think they're probably just posing since the picture on the tube looks a little static and they guys look way too enthusiastic.

Hmm... good question. There's no split-screen, as is common with console games played head-to-head... but on the other hand, maybe a game just ended (Mat's demeanor lends credence to this). In any case, it's nice to see Halo on the front page of a major city newspaper. Thanks, Geoff! (Louis Wu 10:01:36 UTC)

Jaime Griesemer on Halo editing
Hmm... info from Jaime Griesemer, Halo designer - you'll have to make your own sense of it.

Q: Which game does Halo most represent when it comes to modifications (ease of use, how much they change the game etc.)?

A: Well, since the tag system is similar, Myth II, with some restrictions since we don't create environments in the editor like we did in Myth II.

So... Halo editing will be tag-based... but not the environments? Something like that. Thanks, Jaime! (Louis Wu 21:04:22 UTC)

Marathon sounds in Halo?
Hmm... of borderline interest to most Halo fans, but what the heck, news is slow. The Marathon's Story Page has a tidbit about finding a Marathon sound in the Halo E3 movie (specifically the rocket explosion). Go check out the Story page, and decide for yourself! (Louis Wu 20:38:02 UTC)

UT modder to use Halo engine?
hmm... real, or imagined? Kosh drops us a note about an interesting Halo engine sighting. CheckOut.com interviewed Michael Hamlett, the lead designer of Strike Force, a Counter-Strike-like mod for UT. It's still freeware (and not officially supported by Epic), but apparently, potential deals are in the works. At one point, Michael mentions future possibilities:

We even have some things in the works using the Tribes 2 engine and possibly the Halo engine. Errr, too much info there...

So... is he just talking about what his team is looking to do in the future? Or is there more going on behind the scenes than we know? In either case, it's fun to speculate. ;) (Louis Wu 13:54:25 UTC)

Halo-Australia's short story contest gets celeb judges
Hey, cool! A couple of days ago, we mentioned Halo-Australia's short story contest... seems they've gotten a couple of celebrity judges for this thing! MS says "you're independent... not"
Interesting. Bungie has always made a point of the independence they're keeping in the Microsoft buyout deal... how Microsoft saw the Bungie name, its cachet, even, worth as much as the games it would produce. Yesterday, however, Microsoft published a press release about the talent pool currently developing for the Xbox. In it, they list all the "independent developers" currently on board with Xbox titles... Bungie isn't on the list. Below it, though was this:

"In addition to allying with independent development studios, Microsoft also intends to continue to expand its internal pool of development talent across all game genres. The recent acquisition of Bungie Software Corp. increased Microsoft's internal games group to more than 700 designers, programmers, testers and producers."

Sure looks like (at least in Microsoft's eyes) Bungie is just another 50 game engineers, not an independent entity. Hmm... (Louis Wu 00:29:19 UTC)

Halo-related image at the Story page
Over at the Marathon's Story page, another interesting picture has surfaced. An alternate cover of a book called "Armor" (one of the original codenames for Halo) has an image of soldiers dropping from a dropship with no parachutes... quite a lot like we understand Halo works. Hmm... Pax. (Crux Fidelis 16:09:38 UTC)

Story page says Kortana no bomb
Seen on the Story page... seems the report a few days ago of a bomb with a nickname of "Kortana" might not be true after all. The makers of the bomb in question have said that no nickname has been given to it either by them or by the USAF customer. Hmm... oh, well, it seemed too good to be true, anyway. Hmm... it can be ugly out there. A anonymous email points out that the text and images on the General Info page of Halo HQ (the first one, according to Wednesday's news) was lifted word for word from Halo Command. (Note that if you want to see Halo HQ's page, you'll need to turn Javascript (and possibly style sheets) off in your browser, due to page errors that will prevent it from displaying at all with these features enabled.) Puts the fight over the Halo HQ name into a completely different light, doesn't it? (We've archived bits of the relevant parts of both sites, in case one is taken down, here.)
