Those poor, poor maps...
The new maps have been out for a day... and already, they're being ripped apart. Certain Affinity decided to get around the Superbouncing problem by building insta-killzones into the roof of both maps - but as Ducain points out, folks have already found exceptions. (Dry Ice also found a bizarre little glitch that might come in handy occasionally.) The first egg appeared on Tombstone yesterday morning - descriptions of the item were followed quickly by pictures of it in use; we should be clear that modding is required to hold this item, and it's not actually usable (in the form it appears). More limitations are described nicely by RVideo. And while we're at it, Jordan117 noticed another small egg, as well. You guys are BRUTAL! Update: Narcogen, over at Rampancy.net, clearly did more homework than i did; he found a video demonstrating the glitch Dry Ice mentions, as well as ANOTHER invisible wall near red base. These actually look like bigger problems than I'd originally thought. Hmm... (There are even more weirdnesses to be found in this thread at High Impact Halo.) (Louis Wu 14:28:32 UTC)

RvB Season 1 - now for sale on Marketplace
Hmm... I'm not sure I like where this is going, but according to Major Nelson's blog, the first five episodes of Red vs Blue (yes, Season 1) are now available for download on Xbox Live Marketplace - for a buck a pop. (Before you get totally bent out of shape about this: in theory, these are DVD quality (they're definitely higher bitrate than the online versions), and the full season DVDs cost $20 for about 20 episodes - roughly a buck a pop. Also, though this is just temporary, the movies are NOT available on the RvB website, even to sponsors; I'm assuming that's due to the recent maintenance/server upgrades, and not some nefarious plan to make people buy the content on XBL.) The current crop of comments on Major Nelson's blog suggest that people think the price is too high for something that's available for free (usually) on the web, and in fact is several years old. Microsoft might be pushing too hard for paid downloadable content? Maybe. Thanks, darthbob. (Louis Wu 15:39:28 UTC)

Top 20 Weapons? Hmm...
TeamXbox put up a list of their Top 20 Weapons of All-Time - amazingly enough, the Grenade Shield (or Bubbleshield, as Bungie calls it) made the list. (Seems rather absurd to me, actually; not only don't we know how well it works, it's not really even a weapon.) Halo 2's plasma grenade and energy sword also made the list. Looks like RevDotNed was first. (Louis Wu 11:47:20 UTC)

Halo 3 prepped for a September release?
boesman pointed out an article at IGN that suggests that Microsoft is pushing for a September release for Halo 3. They claim "two independent sources" for this information - which puts a new spin on the comments by Shane Kim last week at GDC. At that point, I opined that Kim's comments suggested that Microsoft was really leaving things up to Bungie, in terms of when they were going to be ready to launch the game. If IGN is correct, however, then Microsoft is, indeed, pressuring Bungie for a specific date (and one that's being dictated not by the needs of Halo 3, but by what other games Microsoft is releasing over the course of the fall). Hmm... Update: Frankie says "chill" on the NeoGAF board - "this other stuff is pure speculation. Halo 3 will ship when it's ready." (Thanks, GhaleonEB.) (Louis Wu 22:37:49 UTC)

Halo Wars - now working on cutscenes
Interesting. Mike Smith pointed out a new update on the Halo Wars forum - the crew has been working on motion capture for cutscenes. (Personally, I'd rather be seeing where the GAME ITSELF was going right now, rather than the interstitial movies - but some update is better than no update.) Hmm... upon rereading, it's possible that the mocap will be used for more than just cutscenes... I guess we need to wait and see. (Louis Wu 17:50:01 UTC)

Out of the gate at a flat run
Hmm... this is pretty bizarre... Team Xbox has Halo Wars on the list of games arriving in time for the holidays this year; I have a little trouble believing that, since that means they pretty much need to have sent it to the duplicators by now... but hey, stranger things have happened. I say, until Ensemble confirms, count this as a typo. Update: Thanks to Black Six, who noticed an all-but-invisible line (see screenshot) which separates some of the games on this list from the actual Holiday releases - Halo Wars is NOT coming out this year. X06 Humpday Challenge (sort of)
Sneaking in under the radar, SketchFactor posted a Humpday Challenge writeup yesterday, missed (by our readers, anyway) until this morning, when hnc wondered about it. It's not Halo, this time around - they played Shadowrun and Gears of War - but the end result (Bungie gets battered) was pretty much the same. Well, that's not TOTALLY true. Sketch and Frankie played against bots in Shadowrun... and got demolished. Then Frankie played Sketch in Gears of War - and Frankie won. (Hmm...) Anyway, fun read, take a look! XBLA+Bungie: There's certainly demand...
Hmm... The most recent comment from Bungie about any work they're doing (or not doing) on an Xbox Live arcade title came back in March, in a Bungie Weekly Update. (Well, there was a question about Marathon on XBLA in this update, but Frankie said it's not happening.) In May, during an interview with IGN, Microsoft's Shane Kim was asked about a Bungie XBL title - and while he said it was possible, he didn't think it was happening any time soon. Today, over at Xbox 360 Fanboy, Greg Canessa (Group Manager for Xbox Live Arcade) was asked "is there a title from Bungie in the works?"

"A title from Bungie? Yeah, I can't comment on that, actually... but you know... just stay tuned."

Interpret it as you will - though I'd suggest that there's no real evidence that there's anything that's currently being worked on; it sounds to me like a lot of people would LIKE Bungie to create an XBLA title, but whether it's happening is as yet unknown. Thanks, Doc P. (Louis Wu 16:37:00 UTC)

Should be in your hands... by September.
Oddness; has the Halo Graphic Novel been delayed, or is Amazon just a bit messed up? Random Year Old noticed that the HGN's listing at Amazon has a release date of August 2 (not the original date of July 12, nor the recently-posted date of July 19) - and if you want yet ANOTHER date, Marvel's own website suggests it'll be in stores on July 26th. Hmm... anybody got a few bucks for a pool? (Louis Wu 11:36:53 UTC)

117 Spin.
Stuntmutt feels that c0ld vengeance is getting too much front-page space with his rotating screenshots... so today's One One Se7en is his own take on the genre. I think he should stick to humor. Hmm... I mean... oh, never mind. (Louis Wu 02:36:14 UTC)

And in this corner... Halo Planet
Halo Planet played Bungie last night in a Humpday Challenge - and won. There's a writeup at HP, with game links and plenty of comments from players and other community members, but nothing at Bungie yet. Hmm... is it just a coincidence that Bungie has lost every Humpday Challenge they've held since KP joined the crew? You decide. (Louis Wu 12:16:03 UTC)

Indulge him for a minute.
Hmm... I usually stay away from the Story-related stuff until the Story Page crew picks it up... but this seemed pretty cool to me. Check out bikeman704's speculations on the Ark in the Halo 3 trailer, and where else you might have seen one... (Louis Wu 20:19:07 UTC)

Content for EVERYONE
Swing by Bungie.net - now back up, and with a pretty amazing top story. The announcement trailer is available for all - in QT and WMP9 formats (with more options coming soon, looks like) - plus Screenshots, Storyboards, Wallpapers, a new FAQ, an About page, and a new forum. WONGA. Go take it all in. Update: hmm... looks like the non-trailer content isn't actually accessible yet (I just get redirected back to the main page). Patience. :) (The movie links work fine, though.) (Louis Wu 19:57:36 UTC)

Liberace... without his jewels. Hmm...
It's a short Weekly Update this week over at Bungie.net - even Frankie's FIRST post is short. Pretty cool image of Mister Chief, though. Go read. (You can, of course, choose to read it here, in our Weekly Update Archive.) (Louis Wu 00:45:21 UTC)

In The Pink.
Stuntmutt plays with the title of the upcoming Halo novel in today's One One Se7en. Hmm... 'plays with' might not be a fair assessment. 'Attacks with a hand-axe' might be closer... Update: if you're a REAL masochist, there are several followups in this thread. I blame trigger119 for starting it. (Louis Wu 19:24:27 UTC)

HCEC Season 3, Ep 1
Season 3 of the Halo CE Chronicles kicked off yesterday, with 'The Valley of the Forerunners, Part 1' - swing by the HCEC website to grab your copy. This one picks up where season 2 left off, and is the first in 11 parts. Nice scenery, and a great kickoff into the new season's plotline. Hmm... no download links in that news post, so after reading about the release, be sure to stop by the Videos page. Thanks to Dennis Powers and PsycoJoe for letting us know. Alphabet Soup
Frankie wants your Qs. And your Ps. And your carrots. Hmm... maybe just your Qs. If there's something you want to know from Bungie, and it's NOT about stuff they haven't announced yet, visit the thread, toss your question into the hat. You might just get it answered in tomorrow's Weekly Update. Update: You're certainly welcome to keep posting questions, but realize that Frankie's only gonna answer about 5 of 'em, and he almost certainly stopped reading several hours ago. That's not to say that other READERS might not have some answers for you... but you're not gonna make it into the Weekly Update any more. (Louis Wu 20:52:59 UTC)

Sarge's ankles, Donut.
Red vs Blue Episode 69, 'Talk of the Town', went up for sponsors last night (which means the public versions should be up late tomorrow night or Wednesday) - go grab a copy if you're a sponsor. Hilarious stuff... and I'm looking forward to some butt-whupping by Tex in the near future. Hmm... looks like it was mentioned on our forum by Phan7om this morning. (Louis Wu 15:18:35 UTC)

Stubbs and Grubbs, and everyone in between
There's a great interview over at Gamasutra with Alex Seropian, of Wideload Games. He discusses how the business model works (outsourcing assets rather than creating everything in-house), and how they expanded the Halo engine to fit the needs of a zombie-based comedy action-thriller. It won't be long now - the game will be out next month! Give it a read. Thanks, Roger Wilco. Update: there's also a preview of the game over at GameSpy - they call Stubbs (the character) 'rotting, putrid [but] lovable'. Hmm... thanks, Rampancy.net. (Louis Wu 17:41:48 UTC)

When the old act young
Over at 2old2play, there's another writeup of last weekend's LAN activities - complete with pics and... scary descriptions. I dunno if I'm sad I missed it... or grateful. (Oh, yeah... and some questionable behavior - a site mod takes advantage of a site admin; WMP9 or QuickTime format (only about 350kb each). Hmm...) Thanks, doodi. (Louis Wu 20:23:08 UTC)

Video Interview with Marty O'Donnell at GT
A couple of weeks ago, GameTrailers posted video coverage of the Video Games Live kickoff concert in LA - Geary just noticed that there's an interview with Marty O'Donnell from there up now at Gametrailers, as well. (There are a few other interviews, as well, for folks interested in the tour.) Marty mentions a super-secret guitarist who performed on the Soundtrack, with no credit (by choice) - hmm... HBO Lekgolos vs Bungie - HHC
The HBO Lekgolos played Bungie last night in the Halo Humpday Challenge - and prometheus got the jump on Frankie with a writeup on our forum. There's no Mister Chief artwork, but otherwise, it's a great post. (Hmm... come to think of it, the lack of Mister Chief artwork does it GOOD.) The Lekgolos lost - but by a pretty slim margin; looks like it was a good matchup! Go read. (Louis Wu 12:24:51 UTC)

New maps already in Matchmaking?
Hmm... there's a thread over on the Xbox Addict forums suggesting that the new maps have already begun showing up in the matchmaking playlists. I'm a bit skeptical, given that 1) Turf (the map mentioned) isn't even free, meaning that many XBL users won't have it, 2) Bungie said it wasn't happening yet (though that was some time ago), and 3) there's no mention I can find on OTHER forums, at this point. You never know, though. Check it out! (If we get more info - confirming or denying - we'll be sure to pass it on.) Thanks, SKooT. Update: Poboonru points out a game played yesterday that seems to suggest that Turf is, indeed, part of the Team Slayer playlist. Update 2: my bad - that game is full of the folks who said they've found a way to hack matchmaking. This almost certainly isn't something your average player can participate in. Sorry. (Thanks to the many, many people who pointed this out.) Update 3: Official word from Bungie on this issue: the maps have NOT been released into current playlists yet (still slated for May 5), and the only people playing them this way are hacking - they're currently sifting the database for violators; anyone found participating in these games will be permanently banned from XBL Halo 2 Matchmaking and use of Bungie.net web services. Don't do it, folks - it's not worth it. (Louis Wu 12:45:15 UTC)
