Backstory... revealed obliquely?
Interesting find by Anton P. Nym: If you visit the Library, one of Bungie.net's new forums, the splash bar at the top has a pretty interesting secondary definition for the word itself:

2. A collection of cloned DNA sequences whose location and identity can be established by mapping the genome of a particular organism.

So is THAT what level 7 is all about? Hmm... (Louis Wu 20:18:10 UTC)

More new content coming from Bungie
Bungie.net will be offline for a couple of hours today, starting around 10 am PDT (5 pm UTC), with some visible changes to be noticed when they come back. Hmm... Thanks, Wolfy. (Louis Wu 10:12:14 UTC)

Old Red Eyes Is Back.
Today's One One Se7en was actually written a month ago, when Bungie.net unveiled its new design. The queue was so full of hilarious jokes, though, that it had to be put off until now. Hmm... wait, nobody's gonna believe that... okay, we lost it. It got covered up by the deviled ham when we put it back in the fridge. Sorry. (I have a special fondness for this strip because the Beautiful South rocks.) Update: This was supposed to be an archived strip; it's completely and utterly my fault that you're reading it in the main series. That said, I blame Stuntmutt. (Louis Wu 12:22:23 UTC)

Legend
So I'm lookin' through the uploads folder, and there's this huge movie, and the name rings a bell. Someone named Mike just sent an email about it. Half the guys I know are named Mike... could be anyone. So I grab it and I start watching it, right? And it's a little slow... another black-and-white legendary thing... I'm thinkin' I've seen too many of these... oh, good, there's some color. Okay, so he's playing through pieces of the game, big deal, why am I was—hey, he's pretty good with that plasma pistol! So my son wanders into the room, and we watch him take down a few elites with nice snipershots. And then there's this balls-to-the-wall jump-out-of-the-banshee attack on a Wraith. Cool. Something's tingling, though - I've seen this style before. About the time we watch The Best Gold Elite Kill Ever, I'm scrabbling back through my email, trying to place this guy. Hmm... random AOL address, nothing's jumping to mind. The Steel Trap is definitely rusted. A quick search... Mike Miller sent in two of the best vids we've seen (In Too Deep and Winning Isn't Everything), and now he's taken the hat trick with Legend. 30 mb, QuickTime format, 8:32 long. There's a copy at Mythica, too, just because I haven't stressed Brian enough recently. You gotta watch this, just for the outtakes at the end. And that elite kill. (And the pair following it.) And Mike - I'm really sorry I didn't recognize the address. Though I must say, having the movie unfold like that was worth not knowing. Update: We've got 4 mirrors to tell you about for this film - Coerce.net has mirrored it, as has clarksbrother, in three places (here, here, and here). If our main sites begin to lag, grab a mirror! (Thanks, guys!) (Louis Wu 00:19:50 UTC)

I wanna see the paisley MC
This week's Bungie Weekly Update showed up on the Halo Babies forum - there's a great bit on the Nightmare Armor team's visit to Bungie this week, along with magazine visits, cinematics polishing, stress testing, and a dogfight. ('A bigger Covenant ship'? Banshees on Phantoms? Hmm...) Light on the progress stuff this time around, but a great read nonetheless. Go get it! (Louis Wu 00:18:16 UTC)

New Halo-based .comic over at Subnova, this time from Boxer... you know, come to think of it, I wouldn't mind a cow or two in my next game of Halo. Hmm... (Louis Wu 18:54:19 UTC)

Halo 2 coming... some time.
Reuters interviewed Robbie Bach, Chief Xbox Officer, according to TeamXbox. There was a brief mention of Halo 2:

"We're going to ship it when it's ready. That might be the first half of 2004, it might not. You have to be careful with franchises like this."

Hmm... Thanks, op_ivy. (Louis Wu 01:17:29 UTC)

CobaltNova - reopening for business?
Hehe - yesterday, we posted a news article about a new poll being run by CobaltNova (the 7th Column chapter), looking for predictions about 2004. I wondered, at the time, if this was an interesting way to re-enter the Halo community after the sudden shutdown of operations last month - and an entry by CobaltNova himself suggests it might be. "CobaltNova.com will become a repository for Halo based art with the announcement of monthly prizes for the best work." Hmm... and if you VISIT CobaltNova.com, you'll find a new design, plenty of brand-new news, and (non-functioning, but visible) a section of the navbar devoted to 'Halo Artisans'. Way to slip it in under the radar, Emil. :) (Louis Wu 09:57:23 UTC)

It's great! It's terrible!
Feedback on Mac Halo's gameplay: from the Maccommunity forum, there's a report (thanks, Gary Smith) of good gameplay on a 900 MHz G3 iBook with a 32 mb Radeon 7500 (below the recommended minimum standards set by MacPlay), and from our own forum, a report of lousy play on a dual 2GHz G5 with a 128 mb Radeon 9800. Gearbox loses one.
Wow. Dave Mertz, lead designer on Halo PC for Gearbox, resigned as of yesterday. Details can be found in this forum thread on Gearbox's forum. Hmm... I wonder what this means for the 1.03 patch, or the Editing Tools package? Thanks to progamerz for the heads-up. (Louis Wu 22:17:19 UTC)

So Far Behind He's Ahead
Today's One One Se7en continue's the thread started on Monday - how many shots do we need to take at Halo PC's framerate, anyway? (I mean... it's not like it's a fast-moving target...) We've also added a Guest Queue approximate wait time, to let strip creators know what they're in for when they submit a strip. It's not an exact science, because it depends on special strip submissions by Stuntmutt (Sundays, holidays) - but it should give you a rough idea. (Hmm... looks like they're coming about as fast as Halo PC MC... I'm here all week.) (Louis Wu 11:21:39 UTC)

And now for something completely different
You'd have thought that we'd have planned something clever for news post 7777, wouldn't you? Something suitably Bungie-oriented, maybe mysterious... definitely cool. Yeah, well, it crept up on us. Meleed us in the back of the head, even. Sorry; there's nothing here. Not even a clue (even an obscure one) for the Great Halo Scavenger Hunt. Hmm... (Louis Wu 04:24:51 UTC)

A new Assault, eh? Hmm...
Weirdness - CPL is planning on an Assault mode that's not in the shipping version of Halo PC for their Winter Tournament; apparently, there'll be a new variation released in November. Hmm... More details can be found over at CobaltNova, the site that uncovered this oddity. (Louis Wu 02:42:21 UTC)

Passion, Revisited
Interesting. Deathwhore wrote to point out that a couple of tracks on Peter Gabriel's album 'Passion' (released in 1989) are musically similar to some of the material on the Official Halo Soundtrack. The two tracks he pointed to specifically were 'Of These, Hope (Reprise)' and 'A Different Drum'. These tracks can be purchased individually (for 99 cents each) at the Apple Music Store if you don't have the album (and don't want to buy it). Unfortunately, you must have a Mac running OSX for this. Intriguingly, an interview that appeared on Bungie.net back in June 2002 contained this exchange:

Matt: Let me ask one last question: do you think the Halo soundtrack is ideal background music for a night of passion?

Marty: I can't imagine anything better.

Coincidence... or a veiled tip o' the cap to Mr. Gabriel? You decide. Update: The Plot Thickens. Åstro points out that 'A Different Drum' has been pretty popular in the Myth community, since the map group Creation used it as background music for one of the opening narration for one of their large scenarios. Hmm... (Louis Wu 18:04:59 UTC)

One step forward, two steps back
In a first since the countdown was instituted, the Remaining Items list has CLIMBED on Gearbox's Projects page (from 1 to 2). This also happened at an unusual time of day; normally, the count is updated at midnight, Central time... but this happened before 7 pm. No word from Gearbox on what's going on... Update: Now the countdown is gone entirely. Hmm... (Louis Wu 01:32:29 UTC)

A Dogfight by any other map would fly as sweet
Gearbox has swapped out its dogfight-on-Death-Island screen that was posted this morning with a much wilder (and never seen before) shot of Banshees dogfighting on Gephyrophobia. WAY cool. (Hmm... wonder if the comment I made earlier had anything to do with this...?) Kudos to Fein for noticing. Update: Hehe - rule number one: never let your ego get too big. cartesian over at the Gearbox forums noted that the two Banshees in the first shot were on the same team... a far better reason to swap the pic out. You want movies? We got movies.
We didn't release any movies yesterday because I was out of town... but here are a few more from the queue. These have all been released on their own already - but bandwidth might have been tight, or you might have chosen not to download them because we weren't hosting them. (That may sound silly to some of you... but one side effect of our Movie Posting Guidelines is that if we choose not to host a movie, some visitors choose to conserve their bandwidth and pass on the movie altogether.) Anyway, here you go:

  • 300 Meter Flag Throw - SleekShadow has taken the trick shown in Maverick's recent CTF 2 movie and applied it on the Blue side of Blood Gulch - for a total distance of 300 meters (half again as far as the throw Maverick showed with the red flag). Original details are here. 6.6 mb, QT5.
  • Sidewinder Saga - series trailer. Original description is here. 5.8 mb, QT5.
  • FTC Episodes 1,2,and 3 - Fire Team Charlie has put out three very different (but all very funny) vids; we're mirroring them. (The originals are here. Video 1 was first described here, Video 2 here, and Video 3 here. Mac users will need to run these through DivX Doctor II to be able to hear them properly.

Hmm... let's see, that's 36.6 mb of videos - but luckily, some of you already have these. Grab the ones you don't! (Please, for the sake of our bandwidth, actually CHECK to see if you have these; don't waste Mythica's freely-given bandwidth if you don't need the files... it would be terrible if the resource were yanked because folks were too lazy to conserve.) Coming tomorrow - new content (that is, not seen before on other sites). (Louis Wu 19:00:00 UTC)
