Hmm... Ultimate Halo Companion?
Johnny points out an interesting product at EB Games - preorder Brute Force, and you'll receive a free Ultimate Halo Companion DVD Set. There's a picture of the product (mirrored locally in case it disappears)... but no description. If we find out what this is, we'll let you know! (Louis Wu 12:37:40 UTC)

Star Wars Halo
Joshua Griffon, of TheForce.net, has written an interesting editorial for his site. A Halo-engined Star Wars title? Hmm... there's an intriguing idea... (Louis Wu 14:38:29 UTC)

Halo in Arkansas
Hmm... got mail from The Elite Spartan, he's interested in setting up a Halo tournament in or around Fayetteville, AR. He needs to know how much interest there'd be for a summer tournament, though... if you're interested, drop him a line. (Louis Wu 02:36:23 UTC)

Hmm... interesting. BOLL noticed that the Halo 2 trailer countdown at xbox.com is gone. Glitch in their database system, or something more nefarious? (Louis Wu 08:46:10 UTC)

Halo 2 rumblings
GamerWeb Xbox claims to have 'inside information' that Halo 2 will be announced later this week, in New York. (Why New York? It's not the home of Microsoft, or Bungie, or much of anything else related to Halo - well, okay, it's the home of Freewill, Bungie's number 1 fan - hmm...) Thanks to PCDestroyer for the heads-up - but please, take it with a grain of salt. It ain't so till Bungie SAYS it's so. (Louis Wu 16:30:17 UTC)

Disturbing lack of news
Hmm... here it is, 10:30 in the morning (Pacific Time) on the second day of E3... and not a peep from ANY Bungie fan or employee about what's coming from Bungie! What's up with that? (We even have some b.org personnel at the expo... but not the smallest report from them!) Could it be that Bungie has nothing to announce this week? If that were true, why is a huge chunk of the Bungie staff in LA at all? (Well, yes, there's a Fanfest coming up on Friday... but that doesn't explain the folks that deanero saw yesterday...) I'll be in LA tomorrow, and may find out for myself what's going on, but in the meantime, I'm a little confused. (Louis Wu 17:39:00 UTC)

Mousing around in Halo?
Hmm... many people have said that Halo would be oh-so-much-better with a mouse and keyboard, instead of the standard Xbox controller... well, it looks like they might get a chance to test that assertion soon. Xbox 2k has a story on the Claw, a device that works in conjunction with a standard Microsoft USB mouse to control all the actions available via the controller.

"Many PC gamers have expressed a desire to play Halo with a mouse plus keyboard style set-up", said Jason Ferraro, Director Ferraro Design. "Our Claw and mouse solution provides an intuitive controller set-up for those less familiar with the standard dual analogue console game pad."

Disclaimer - this could simply be a very late April Fool's joke on the part of Xbox 2K... or it could be something we see next week at E3. Time will tell... (Louis Wu 00:45:24 UTC)

Literary sources revealed
Hmm... Marty knows how to spill those beans... From the Question and Answer database of the Marty's Army fanclub at the Seventh Column:

Q What are the meanings/histories behind all the names in Halo? 343 Guilty Spark? Pillar of Autumn? Truth & Reconciliation?

A Marty the Elder says: 343 Guilty Spark is from Ender's Game, Pillar of Autumn is from Titus Andronicus and Truth & Reconciliation is from the Bible. We here at Bungie borrow from as many sources as possible. (Master Chief was borrowed from Julia Child but we misspelled it).

Looks like I'm gonna have to go back and read Ender's Game again... and where's my Shakespeare collection? Thanks to mnemesis for the heads-up on this one. (Louis Wu 21:03:11 UTC)

Beating the scripts
Hmm... this is interesting. If you've ever headed back to the start of Silent Cartographer after activating the Cartographer (that is, rather than getting into the dropship that would end the level), you'll find that all the Marines you'd left near the start were dead. (Presumably, they were slaughtered by random Covs you managed to miss along the way.) Apparently, though, this is a scripted outcome, one you have no control over; Chez Wiz reports that

I've loaded six into the three warthogs and driven them out deep in the ocean, but I still find them dead after coming out of the map room and bypass getting in the dropship.

That's sort of disappointing... don't you wish you could save the poor buggers? I wonder what would happen if you forced them down into the interior of SC, then got them out of the jeep and blocked their return with the jeep itself? Would they STILL die? Will anyone find out? Going where no tank has gone before...
A few days ago, Cal sent in a number of pretty nifty shots taken on Sidewinder. Some of 'em just make you go 'hmm...' Well, they got lost in the shuffle... but we unburied them. Check 'em out! They've been added to the rapidly growing Tricks page... which is going to need a better navigation system, and soon. (The backlog of tricks submissions is currently running in double digits... apologies. For those in the queue - be happy you're not in the Gameplay Tips queue, which is even longer! I gotta find some serious updating time...) (Louis Wu 03:30:58 UTC)

Phoenix Tidbit
Torsten Kuhnke points out an interesting little passage on this page; a writer named John Tynes is apparently working in a writing capacity on a Bungie Xbox game that's due out in about a year. [Best guess: Phoenix.] Scroll down about 6 paragraphs:

Happily, my writing work for Bungie Studios at Microsoft has resumed just in time to help finance this little indulgence. I'm working on an X-Box videogame for them that is coming out in about a year.

Hmm... fodder for a new website, it seems. :) (Louis Wu 02:27:46 UTC)

New Bungie job opening
The sharp eyes of mnemesis are STILL working - he caught a new job listing on Bungie's corporate site.

3D Animator

Bungie is seeking a skilled character animator to join our quest for world domination.

Responsibilities:

  • Create realistic animations for a variety of characters that meet Bungie?s quality, originality and creative standards, all within tight technical requirements.
  • Maintain a consistency of animation with regards to appearance, style, timing and other related aspects from one character to another.
  • Assist with other aspects of art production, such as modeling and texturing.

Requirements and application procedure are listed, as well. Hmm... is the Phoenix team looking for new blood, or is this for a NEW project? (Louis Wu 20:49:05 UTC)

Halo reviewed at TechTV
Nice catch - Hyperium found a TechTV Halo review. Except for implying that Halo will not come out on a PC, it's a decent review. They had some troubles with the controls... but nothing they couldn't handle. One odd thing - the video clip enclosed (generic splitscreen coop play - no spoilers) at one point shows the two teammates in a jeep... and BOTH screens are in 3rd person mode. (There is no way to see what the gunner in the back is actually shooting at; the camera remains on him.) Several months ago, the gunner was first-person - either this has changed, or something was pretty screwy over at TechTV. Hmm... (Louis Wu 05:43:17 UTC)

Seventh Column?
Jason Yates has picked up an interesting bit of trivia, over on the Marathon's Story page forum: in the small print of the manual that came with his CD was this snippet:

Brothers and Sisters: the time is nigh. There is strength in numbers. Unite and the planet is ours: www.seventhcolumn.org

(The URL doesn't resolve yet.) Jason did some sniffing... and found that the site is registered to Max Hoberman, aka Yeroen, the Bungie webmaster (not to be confused with the Webmaster). (What Jason DIDN'T notice is that seventhcolumn.com and seventhcolumn.net were ALSO registered by Max.) Things that make you go hmm... (Louis Wu 21:42:05 UTC)

DVD scans
Final Solution writes to say that he picked up his Halo disc today - you can find scans on his site. Hmm... 'Do not make illegal copies of this disc'... that's still non-trivial, right? (Duping 8.4 GB discs still takes big hardware, right?) (Louis Wu 21:35:14 UTC)

Arny Staten lays it down
Joseph Staten stopped in to rag on Marty's anility, and to second Marty's suggestion that you ignore (if you can) the Gamespot movies, to keep from becoming jaded. He also, almost as an aside, passed along the tidbit that the Certification that Microsoft is putting Halo through at the moment is a two-week process... so that Gold Master isn't as close as we thought. Hmm... two weeks... started on the 16th, or so... that means assuming no problems, they've got just over two weeks for manufacturing and distribution of at least 350,000 DVDs. Wow. (That number, btw, came from Ed Fries' estimation that 70% of Xbox preorders include Halo, coupled with a WAG of 500,000 units available at launch.) (Louis Wu 02:06:05 UTC)

No day-to-night shifts
Bounty, of Battleground: Halo, learned a bit about diurnal transitions in Halo from Matt Soell today - apparently, there won't be any situations where you can see the change. Hmm... guess that means that sunset scene mentioned in Xboxweb's preview is gonna be pretty short... Swing by BGH to read the full quote. (Louis Wu 02:12:14 UTC)

So who's Damuis?
Hmm... our fearless leader seems to be napping - guess it's time to put the prayer blocks down.

A voice responded. As it spoke it became clear that it was not one voice but hundreds of voices, each one echoing into infinity.

"Damuis?"

Mr. Bill. Jr. V© drops us another story, introducing... well, read it. You'll find 'The Spirit' in our Fan Fiction section. Be sure to comment on it! Pax. (Crux Fidelis 12:38:38 UTC)
