Making Halo Wars look like Halo
GrimBrother One noticed a new Developer Blog at HaloWars.com - this one discusses how the Halo Wars team matched the art style of the Halo universe... with minimal help from Bungie. Interesting read! (Louis Wu 22:37:29 UTC) (permalink)
Halo Fun for your Tuesday Afternoon
Stuff that showed up on the BungLog™ since I headed out this afternoon: - The latest 'Know Your Ninja' feature looks at Butane123, who will ban you as soon as look at you. Wait, that's not right. ...who's a really nice guy, and will buy you hot chocolate. No, that's not right, either. Oh, go read the piece, and see what he's like.
- CMNeir and friends have released 'Can't Help But Stare' - I guess there are things more important than playing Halo. Or something.
- My Halo Life has released 'They Call Me Chief' - which makes absolutely no sense. I think that's the point.
Thanks, urk. (Louis Wu 22:35:04 UTC) (permalink)
Bungie.net Stats Maintenance Bungie.net stats are offline today, for a short time, starting soon. (If that sounds vague, blame urk.) Just maintenance, though - don't get all excited about new features or anything. Update: urk wanted to point out that it was actually Achronos who posted that vague note, not him. Way to man up, urk. Seattle Times Followup - Harold Ryan Interview
General Vagueness let us know about a followup article to the Seattle Times piece we mentioned yesterday; it contains edited excerpts from an interview with Bungie's Harold Ryan. It's really a fascinating read; Ryan doesn't cross the line about what can and can't be spoken of, but he certainly does a good job of fleshing out the intermediate spaces. If you're interested in how Bungie works, and where their president thinks they're going, you should read this. (There are small tidbits about Reach in here, too - nothing earth-shattering, but certainly more than we knew before.) (Louis Wu 15:24:22 UTC) (permalink)
Feed me, Seymour!
Hawty McBloggy pointed out a pretty funny clip of some gameplay on Sandtrap; Swing by and give her the 28 seconds it takes to watch this, because it'll make you laugh. (Louis Wu 14:33:03 UTC) (permalink)
Red vs Blue Recreation Ch. 3: Visiting Hours
Red vs Blue Recreation Chapter 3: Visiting Hours is up for Sponsors now, and will be up for the general public later this evening. Donut seems to have confused Caboose (not that that's really difficult)... and I'm not sure about the whole ransom thing. Sounds like the mystery's getting deeper, though... 2v2 tourney starting in July at iGames Servando Pena let us know about a multiweek Halo 3 2v2 slayer tournament being hosted by iGames (an organization of LAN gaming centers) being held on Thursdays around the US. The regular season starts on July 2, and the playoffs start 6 weeks later (August 13). More details can be found at the iGames website. Servando's center, Evolution Games, is participating - if you're in the San Antonio, TX area, stop by!

ubald's final permutations
Tony 'ubald' Marcotte sent word of another Halo render he'd completed - this one shows off the last of the armor permutations he hasn't done. Rogue, Scout, and Mark V are all shown. We've added the image to his gallery here at HBO. Check it out! (Louis Wu 19:00:36 UTC) (permalink)
These don't just grow on vehicle trees!
It's been a while since he sent along any new snippets, but Captain Spark was apparently driving pretty badly recently. Check out the results in our Dialogue Databank! (Louis Wu 17:43:01 UTC) (permalink)
A Sangheili's War Is Never Over - the Conclusion
Leviathan seems to have gotten tired of the 'one page every few days' release schedule of his graphic novel-ish story called 'A Sangeili's War Is Never Over' - he released the last four episodes all at once today. (Episodes 8 and 9, with a recap from episode 7, are in this forum post... and episodes 10 and 11 are in this forum post.) This really was a fantastic story - great plot, amazing artwork. If you've missed it, start at the beginning (links are in the first post)... if you've been keeping up, read the end! (Louis Wu 17:20:32 UTC) (permalink)
Tag and Release - HSSBOB
The Tag and Release feature released today uses 'HSSBOB' as the flagged term - it's screenshots submitted for HaloScreenshots.com's Best of the Best competition. Check out the images urk came up with - and then search the tag yourself, for even more goodies! (Louis Wu 17:17:22 UTC) (permalink)
Comic Monday
Looks like the only updated comic we know about is Bloogyo's mention of Rat's Nest 19 7 - guess it was a slow weekend! (Louis Wu 17:14:09 UTC) (permalink)

UK ODST Discount Evaporating tb2571989 pointed out that UK retailer Argos has upped their price for Halo 3: ODST from £26.99 to £36.49 - much more in line with the US price of $60. (Nearly exactly in line, in fact.) If you're a UK buyer, and didn't preorder when we mentioned the price war a couple of weeks ago, it looks like you might ALMOST have missed your window - GAME and Gamestation have also bumped their prices up to the £35 range. Gameplay (as of the time of this writing) is still offering the game at £30 - this might be your best bet, and will almost certainly rise soon. (Louis Wu 17:05:29 UTC) (permalink)
Halo 3: ODST - mixing it up
The Seattle Times has posted an interesting summary of Halo 3: ODST, with some nice background info on Bungie themselves. If you're interested in where they are, and where they're going, this is worth a read. (Louis Wu 13:36:29 UTC) (permalink)
Master Chief and Cortana Tribute
j m sent us a link to a tribute video he made, paying homage to the love between Cortana and the Chief. Starts slow, but the overall feeling is quite good. (Louis Wu 13:35:29 UTC) (permalink)
Wait... they - what? This post, on a chinese forum, found its way into my Google Alerts folder. I have to say, it's one of the hardest-to-read posts I've seen in a while (from a color/background standpoint)... and it's one of the most out-there theories I've ever seen (from a crazy fan standpoint). Sort of fun to see all of the 'evidence' in one place, though...Update: this is almost surreal - Narcogen pointed out that this is a repost of a Bungie.net forum post originally put online in late 2007 (just after the release of Halo 3). Whoa.

Halo 3 Fails: Episode 22
The latest Halo 3 Fails (Episode 22) is now life - the Throwing Fail on Blackout was pretty funny. (Lots of 'em are funny, actually - that one just made me laugh harder.) Thanks, Chris10023. (Louis Wu 15:24:48 UTC) (permalink)
Another Preview of Halo: Helljumper
CaptainTony pointed out a bunch of new content he's added to Halopedia, collected from an IGN Preview of the first issue of Halo: Helljumper, the next Halo comic coming from Marvel. Five pages (no dialogue) plus the cover - when coupled with Marvel's own preview, that's got to be a significant chunk of the issue! (Louis Wu 15:24:12 UTC) (permalink)
Bungie Pro Render to Video Review at 360Junkies
ikillbambis let us know that he's written a review of the Bungie Pro Render to Video service over at 360Junkies - if you're not really sure how easy it is to use this service, give this a read. (Louis Wu 15:23:50 UTC) (permalink)

Hawty McBloggy - the gift that keeps on giving
There's plenty of OTHER Halo content on Hawty's blog in the last day or so, too - check out this really huggable stuffed Master Chief, and a short video showing one of those 'hey, what just happened?' moments we've all run across in Matchmaking. Typical - on a day she's supposed to be getting presents from others, she continues to give. Thanks, angel! (Louis Wu 15:20:49 UTC) (permalink)
Birthdays are for celebrating.
Yesterday was Hawty McBloggy's birthday - and a bunch of regulars on her blog put together a tribute song to celebrate. Boom-Dee-Ya-da gets another Halo rendition - but this time, the lyrics are all new. Happy birthday, angel! (Thanks to Captain Spark for pointing it out.) (Louis Wu 15:19:43 UTC) (permalink)

Fundfax Fairraiser - ENDING TONIGHT
Due to some unforeseen (and VERY unfair to Hawty) circumstances, the Fundfax Fairraiser (the fundraiser Hawty McBloggy set up for Marissa's Bunny) is ending quite early - tonight, at midnight, in fact. You've got just under 9 hours to buy some virtual raffle tickets, and make a difference in a little girl's life, and maybe win yourself some super-cool schwag. If you were planning on participating, but hadn't gotten to it yet (it was, after all, supposed to run through July 7)... now's the time. Sorry for the short notice! (Louis Wu 22:26:48 UTC) (permalink)
HBO's Music Page - Reborn Occasionally, we get flak in our forum from people who complain that many areas of our site are out of date. They're right - many sections ARE out of date. This is because right now, we have a pretty limited staff (it's mostly me, except in an emergency), and maintaining the front page is pretty much all we can manage on a day-to-day basis. When these complaints come up, I usually take the opportunity to solicit volunteers - anyone who feels like helping out, we're happy to find work for you! We don't often get any takers on this - and I understand completely; the work to be done is mountainous, and often tedious. Not long ago, though, ElusiveEagle519 stepped up to the plate, and said he'd be happy to do some organizing. Have at it, I told him... and promptly forgot about it. (He'd either give up, in which case I'd be better off not getting my hopes up... or he'd come through, which would make me really happy, but didn't require further consideration until it happened.) He came through. He attacked our Music section, and not only brought a page that hadn't been touched since 2000 up to date, he did it with s7yle. It's a great summary of the history of Halo's music, the magic behind the team that creates it, the contributions of fans to the corpus, plus a roundup of all the interviews that the Bungie audio team members have given in the last 10 years (that are still accessible). Whoa! Go read it - and revel in the warmth of true fan love. Thanks, Daniel! (Louis Wu 02:37:09 UTC) (permalink)
Halo 3: ODST/Halo 2 The beginning
jakebryant1330 has put together a video showing the start of Halo 3: ODST, using footage from Halo 2, Halo 3: ODST, and released trailers. Very nicely done! Check it out. 4 minutes long. Thanks, CaLL Me ZeNy.

urk in high heels? Hrm...
The Bungie Weekly Update is live, seeing as it's Friday night (well, Saturday morning in HBO-time, but Bungie's 7 hours behind) - this one's a fun read. Apparently, Nathan Fillion stopped by the studio - not to record dialogue, but to play some ODST and satisfy some fanboi fawning. (Nice pics) Also, details of upcoming changes next month to playlists, and the Render-to-Video service, and more! Go read. As always, we offer you the choice of doing so in our own Weekly Update Archive.

Trinity Requiem
It's been a while since we've heard from PraetoriaGuard... but they were a pretty loud community voice, back in the day. And at one point, they were building Trinity, a pretty ambitious machinima project. Well, Trinity never saw the light of day... but Eisen Feuer has released Trinity Requiem - a look back at what it was, and maybe what it could have been. 87 hours of footage will fly by in 6 minutes - don't blink. This works surprisingly well, actually; as I watched, I found myself being washed with waves of nostalgia. Go grab a copy - it weighs in at 113 mb, and it's being co-hosted by PG and us. (Links are on the PG page, but if it goes down for whatever reason, we'll put up local links.) (Louis Wu 02:09:31 UTC) (permalink)

I feel bad for the Donkey Kong guy.
IGN put together a documentary on Moto-Neural Demyelination. Never heard of it? There's a reason for that. Go watch, and learn. Yes, it's Halo-related. (For what it's worth - I think they could have picked a better name for the disease - it cuts awfully close to REAL motor neuron disorders. I don't think they were shooting for 'mean', though.) New crop of videos for your perusal pleasure at Bungie.net today: - Top 10 Halo 3 Fails has a collection of substandard gameplay - some of which is very funny. (The Flag Stop Fail at #3 is just amazing to watch.)
- Splattered by a Spartan shows that you don't have to bump the speed up to 300% to make Spartans deadly weapons even without guns or grenades.
- Flying High is a montage from Bagel with pretty nice editing - 8 minutes.

- 2501 has released two new episodes - Episode 70 came out on Wednesday (thanks, urk), and Episode 71 came out yesterday (thanks again, urk).
- There are two new Reclaimers, too - TTL Demag0gue let us know yesterday that he'd posted a special Thursday edition (Episode 198 is called 'Puzzling Things Out', and Reclaimer is working with his AI to figure out what's going on with those odd communications), and today is a standard release day - Episode 199 (Mimic) brings up some heretofore unknown skills of Tran's.
- Dennis Powers told us about Shipwrecked Episode 74 - End Game; the battle between Gaia and Dominion comes to a head.
- Bloogyo stopped in with the good news that his Xbox is fixed - he's got Rat's Nest 19 5 and a new lawltage to celebrate.
That should keep you occupied while the coffee is brewing!

Honoring Bungie Day, Fan-Style FyreWulff is going to try and hit 7,777 games played on Xbox LIVE on Bungie Day, July 7 - he's starting tomorrow morning. (As of right now, he's got 7,343 games played - I don't think he could have asked for a better (more Bungie-ish) starting place.) He's got 12 days to play 434 games... that's a non-trivial task, given that he's planning on playing every single one of those as legit games. (If you figure 10 minutes a game, average, you're looking at 72 hours of playing time, spread over 12 days - that's 6 hours per day, every day.) If you play with him during this time (and aren't disqualified by a few simple rules), you're in the running for some cool prizes. Check out his post for all the details! ODST Achievements... 'leaked' (not really)
darthbob pointed out a new YouTube video, purporting to show off the Halo 3: ODST Achievements. If this were real, I'd hesitate to post it; Bungie has not released this information yet, and many Bungie fans don't take kindly to being spoiled early. However, I'm pretty confident this is a fake - albeit a really nicely done fake. The inconsistencies in the text give it away - but I'll say that the artwork is spectacular! Zee update - she eez up! What happens on Fridays? Oh, yeah, Bungie releases its Weekly Update - and this Friday is no different. This one focuses heavily on Crater[night], one of the maps you'll be getting well acquainted with once you get your hands on ODST's Firefight mode. It's not all that's in there, though - there's also some important Render-To-Video beta news (they're deleting ALL rendered videos on Monday, so download the ones you want NOW - and also on Monday, ALL Bungie Pro subscribers - not just those who paid for it - will be able to use the service), and some Haloscreenshots.com contest info, and a few other tidbits. Including some awesome sound clips from Johnson. Go read! (Either at Bungie.net, or here, in our Weekly Update Archive.) (Louis Wu 01:16:59 UTC) (permalink)

A Gamer's Alphabet - a charity project
I received an email from mick, a friend of Marissa's dad, Mike. (Marissa, if you haven't been reading long, is a little girl with infantile spasms; her dad started a program whereby Fairfax, a stuffed bunny, has been visiting people and places around the world (and getting photographed doing it) to raise awareness about Marissa's illness.) mick came up with the idea of creating a Gamer's Alphabet - a small book which would (in theory) contain a set of illustrated gamer words. (There is a conversation over at fazyluckers that might help explain what's involved.) If you'd like to help, swing by and sign up - you'll need to tell Chris, who approves all members, that mick sent you. There are so many amazing artists in the Halo community - by adding your skills to this project, you can help create a really cool little book that can be sold to help out Marissa! The Community Marches On Some goodies from the BungLog™ today: - The Hope Unto Dawn charity event undertaken by Facility B5D was a success - over $2000 was raised for the Child's Play charity, and fun was had by a lot of people. A 'Supertage' (screenshots, clips, and pics commemorating the event) is linked, along with the thank-you message from the receiving charity. (Actually, the thank-you message redirects to msn.com; I'd guess B5D deep-linking is frowned upon. You can read it by visiting this forum post.)

Halo - a decent selling point
Heh - looks like Halo's being used to sell PC motherboards these days! Linken91 noticed an ad on the Asus website advertising the Rampage II GENE motherboard. As Psychophan7 points out, it's common for PC manufacturers to use images from games to help sell their products - what makes this different is a pair of factors: 1) the images are clearly composited from more than one game (most images are simply taken from a game's assets - on the same website, Asus uses shots from Crysis: Warhead to sell similar products), and 2) there's an amusing statement at the bottom of all of the ROG pages: "All images strictly copyright asustek 2009 all rights reserved. Any from [sic] of unauthorized use of the contents of this site is prohibited." It's one thing to borrow someone else's design to help sell your product - it's another thing entirely to say it's yours.

Microsoft Weighs in on ODST Price Decisions
This information (and the rationale behind it) has been pretty well hashed-out in the past week, but Joystiq got an official response from Microsoft, so... to explain the release of Halo 3: ODST at the standard new-game pricepoint of $59.99 (US), Microsoft had this to say: "We believe this standalone experience is much more than just an expansion. Halo 3: ODST provides a new campaign from the point of view of an entirely new character. Combine that with three new multiplayer maps, the entirely new cooperative mode called Firefight, and the complete Halo 3 multiplayer collection on a standalone disc, we feel this is a good value and tremendous addition to the Halo franchise." As an aside, the original "3-5 hour" playtime estimated for the campaign portion of ODST (over a year ago) is no longer accurate, according to several Bungie employees; I couldn't get an exact value, but it seems that the standard player will find it not QUITE as long as Halo 3 - but not far off. So, while Bungie is not in charge of pricing the final product, most employees that I spoke to last week felt that fans wouldn't feel ripped-off once they'd gotten their hands on all that ODST has to offer. And that's a good thing. (Louis Wu 15:49:53 UTC) (permalink)

Bloogyo has hit Episode 100 for Rat's Nest, though, and has created a montage to celebrate - find links in his forum post! (Louis Wu 15:04:48 UTC) (permalink)
Friday Caption Fun, Round 50 Speaking of Hawty McBloggy - it's Friday, so she's got her recurring Friday Caption Fun feature online... last week's picture not only elicited some funny captions from the peanut gallery, it got Pete Cooper to turn an internet meme into an entertaining response. There's also (of course) the new pic for you to play with. (Erm... caption. I meant 'caption'.) Go look! Amazing... there've been 50 of these already! (Louis Wu 14:49:12 UTC) (permalink)

Halo 3: ODST Interview with the Game's Producer
Gamereactor (a scandinavian gamer site) has a video interview with Curtis Creamer, filmed at E3, discussing Firefight and why it's cool. (I was almost distracted from what Curtis was saying by the player behind him who was trying to kill a Hunter with normal shots from a plasma pistol...) Tons of info in here - much you've read in other interviews, some you might have missed. Worth a watch! (Louis Wu 16:54:56 UTC) (permalink)
ODST Preorder Update, thanks to a fan
mrbilly93 checked a bunch of different retailers for you - Best Buy, Amazon, Walmart, Target, and Toys R Us (all in the US), and found that so far, only Amazon and Gamestop are offering the "Sgt Johnson in Firefight" bonus for preorders. (Gamestop is still the only place you can preorder the ODST Collector Pack with the ODST controller.) Things to keep in mind if you want goodies! (Louis Wu 16:45:45 UTC) (permalink)

Pretty interesting timing - a couple of days ago, scarab mentioned a bizarre occurrance on the level Covenant - he'd been rushed by a boatload of suicide grunts. ODST Offerings
With a smaller staff than most groups at E3, it's difficult keeping up with the flood of ODST data, but we'll try to do a roundup now. There are hands-on/previews from: In addition, there are three more clips at Gamespot, including the entire first cutscene (Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3) - thanks, urk - and Gamespy has something they call Spy Libs, with fill-in-the-blanks answers about ODST from Bungie and Gamespy employees. I'm sure there'll be more as the day goes on - it remains to be seen if we'll be able to find a place to update from. (Louis Wu 17:11:35 UTC) (permalink)

ODST Video Overload More awesome ODST stuff, courtesy of urk's Bungie Blog Babblings (they're much better than that sounds, but I needed a 'B' word): There's gonna be more all day - but I have no clue how much access we'll have. Keep an eye on Bungie.net for the best bits! (Louis Wu 16:41:53 UTC) (permalink)
New ODST Gameplay at GameTrailers
The More Deluded noticed three new gameplay vids at GameTrailers - two campaign walkthroughs, and a walkthrough of ODST's new Firefight Co-op mode. You can get a great sense for how it works (and what the folks playing it at E3 this week are seeing). Swing by and watch! (Don't feel too bad about missing the Campaign stuff - that is NOT being shown on the floor, you have to be a bigwig to get that.) (Louis Wu 16:31:59 UTC) (permalink)

Bungie.net - Opening the Content Floodgates
There's a MONSTER FLOOD of content at Bungie.net - let's see if I can delineate it all before the HBO day ends: If you missed any of this over the course of the day (sorry, I was walking the floor of E3, and the number of unlocked wireless networks available inside South Hall is... less than one) - go check it out now! Monetizing the Rookie Exanubisleader pointed out a couple of articles at Kotaku. The first covers new avatars that will be available on Xbox LIVE Marketplace in the future - one of them is a Halo 3: ODST character. The second shows off the first look at the Xbox 360 controller that will be bundled with Halo 3: ODST in its Limited Edition packaging this fall. Willy pointed out yet another article, also at Kotaku, which explains the $59.99 pricetag of ODST - and the $99.99 pricetag of the LE.

Great work from the time of Halo 3's release
Gonna get some news on the page for Tuesday, because I'll be travelling for most of Tuesday morning, and taking in the E3 sights during the afternoon. First up: nearly buried in the wild discussing this afternoon, Mrguy pointed out a pretty slick digital image created by Mike Thompson. Old... but gaw-juss!

Halo 3: ODST/Halo: Reach - a summary of the day
As almost everyone reading this by now already knows, Bungie had two rather hefty reveals at the Microsoft Press Briefing today - the first was a gameplay demonstration of Halo 3: ODST (followed by a boatload of information released on Bungie.net), the second was a heretofore-unknown game, Halo: Reach (this weekend's title leak doesn't really count). Things worth knowing about Halo 3: ODST: - Release date is September 22
- lots of versions of the new trailer can be found at Bungie.net
- Lots of new screenshots can be found at Bungie.net (poring over them will reveal all sorts of tidbits about the game - our forum is having fun)
- a handful of QuickTime VR 3D vids (and a hint of more to come) are available at Bungie.net
- Lots of new info about the game (including a new mode, Firefight, an invite to the Halo: Reach Beta for purchasers, an unlockable for pre-orderers, and more) can be picked over
(There's a new forum on Bungie.net devoted to the game, too.) If you missed the Joe Staten-supplied gameplay during the briefing itself, you can watch it at IGN (thanks, BlueNinja). And oh, yeah, there's a new Dashboard theme on Xbox LIVE. Moving along to Halo: Reach: - You can watch the trailer on Bungie.net (or download it in a lot of flavors)
- It'll be out in 2010
- It's Bungie-driven
- It's got Elites
- I'm SURE there are more tidbits to be gleaned - dive into our forums and see what people have come up with!
News might be light tomorrow - I'm traveling out to E3, and am NOT equipped to report from the show floor - but anything more we discover will be posted in due time. Go enjoy what's out already! (Louis Wu 23:00:03 UTC) (permalink)

Into The Pixel 2009 - coming to E3
According to this press release, Into The Pixel (a juried digital art exhibition involving experts from traditional fine arts as well as the entertainment industry, now in its 6th year) will be showing off its 2009 collection at E3 this week. The specific website isn't live yet, but the general Into The Pixel site has much more information (though nothing yet on the 2009 entries). Why this is appearing on a Halo website: one of the 16 works in this year's collection is 'Landing', a piece of Halo Wars artwork by Ensemble's Corey Butler. Looking forward to seeing it! Monday Comic Roundup Just a couple of comic updates for you today: Bloogyo pointed out that Rat's Nest Episode 16 4 is up (but that you should start at the beginning of Episode 16 or it won't make any sense)... and TTL Demag0gue let us know that Reclaimer 191 (Introspection) is live, and the Reclaimer is beginning to sound emo. Erm... sorry, I mean you get a deeper look into his troubled mind. (Reclaimer's, not Demag0gue's.) (Louis Wu 13:28:01 UTC) (permalink)
