Rampancy.net - Rounding out your Halo Experience
Last couple of updates for a bit - both from Rampancy.net. First up is a speculation piece in Narcogen's blog - he knows that Frankie has discredited the rumor that Brutes are playable in Halo 3... but he's written an article explaining why they COULD be, anyway. Second is a note about a new subsite of wideloadgames.org - Voices of the Damned, a site devoted to collecting dialogue from Stubbs the Zombie. Hurrah! (Louis Wu 17:29:28 UTC)

New footage next week?
Xboxic uncovered a blog post from YLA G, a Microsoft employee who's part of the Xbox Elite Team Belgium, that reports about a 7 minute Halo 3 trailer to be available on Xbox Live Marketplace next week.

The clip will show the emergence of the Brutes as "playable characters" in the game and it will contain 2.5 minutes of gameplay footage.

As Xboxic says, this hasn't been confirmed anywhere else, but there have been hints that stuff is coming this month, so who knows? If we get something out of Bungie about this, we'll be sure to let you know. Update: The More Deluded reminded us that Bungie actually mentioned that SOMETHING was coming, back in mid-November:

Shortly after the commercial airs, we'll be treating our fans to the next installment in our "making of" documentary series on Xbox Live Marketplace. This next "VIDOC" is going to give some new insights into elements of the campaign and will peel back the curtain on a certain prominent character in Halo 3. We'll talk more about this in the coming weeks.

Doesn't mention Brutes specifically, but it certainly fits nicely with the rumor. Update 2: Frankie has confirmed (on the Gaming Age forums) that the 'playable brutes' part of this story, at least, is NOT true. Thanks to Ding On, on the Bungie.net forums, for the heads-up. Update 3: And he's now smacked it down on our own forum, as well, for folks who might not believe 'Stinkles' might actually be Frankie. (Louis Wu 14:54:42 UTC)

Whole Lotta Halo Love
The REALLY big news today is embodied in an article called 'Happy Halo Day' over at Bungie.net. In fact, there are 4 separate stories, all bundled into one jaw-dropping article. There's a CG Halo 3 ad (with new music) that will air on Monday Night Football on December 4 (and be available on Marketplace, and presumably online, after that), and the next installment in the 'making of' documentary series will be released soon after; there are new Halo 2 maps coming out next spring - you'll likely need to have an Xbox360 if you want to download them; there will be a Halo 3 public beta next spring, as well; and there's a new Halo 3 screenshot, taken in a campaign level. You'll want to pore over the actual article for the low-down nitty-gritty on all of these bombshells. It's shaping up to be a fun year for the Halo Nation! (That's our new 'official' name, apparently. Details of THAT are in the article, as well.) This, too, has a sizeable thread already in our forum, for discussion. (Louis Wu 13:41:36 UTC)

Xbox Live Summary, Halo-style
Only peripherally Halo-related... but interesting nonetheless; Gamasutra has an artcle discussing Xbox Live - and a pretty amazing 60% attach rate for Xbox 360 owners. (That means 60% of all 360s are linked to an Xbox Live account - compare this to the Xbox attach rate of only 10%.) Halo plays a large role in what XBL offers; Halo 2 continues to be the most-played game on Live, Halo trailers account for absurd numbers of download bytes (speaking of which, the Halo 3: Behind the Scenes documentary is now available for download on Xbox Live Marketplace - 400 mb worth of 720p, Dolby 5.1-soaked goodness; go see it as it was meant to be seen), and Halo 2 Vista will be one of the first games (along with Shadowrun) to take advantage of Live Anywhere, a feature that let's you access Live features simultaneously from your Xbox or your PC. (Again, just so we don't start any rumors: Halo 2 Vista will NOT be able to interact directly with Halo 2 Xbox; the Live Anywhere functionality will involve your Friends List in this case.) A Brunt?
In the past couple of weeks, there've been a few debates about some oddly-dressed characters visible for a few seconds in the Behind The Scenes documentary. Stuntmutt lays their identity to rest in today's One One Se7en. (Louis Wu 14:44:00 UTC)

Make No Mistake
Narcogen warns against overenthusiasm in his latest rant at Rampancy.net; there are some great arguments to help you keep a level head about what was (and wasn't) revealed in the Halo 3 Behind the Scenes documentary released recently. Go read. (Louis Wu 10:41:39 UTC)

Halo 3 Documentary - QT HD available
Okay, so here's the deal. A few days ago, a really cool movie was released by Bungie - 'Halo 3: Behind The Scenes'. It came out in lots of flavors, lots of sizes... but the highest-resolution QuickTime, a gorgeous HD 720p version weighing in at 400 mb, had a problem; the last 20 seconds of the video got corrupted every time they tried to upload the file to the servers. The word in the latest Weekly Update is that the problem still isn't solved. Now, 400 MB is WAY too big for us to handle as a direct download - especially if we're the only host, and the file is as popular as this one is. But this is EXACTLY the sort of thing that BitTorrent is good at. And we can certainly spare 20Mbit/sec of seed bandwidth, to help folks get started... so with Bungie's blessing, we're offering the HD QuickTime version of this film as a torrent. If you've been waiting for this version, wait no longer - grab a BitTorrent client and start sharing! (For those who've been waiting for this but cannot or will not use BitTorrent - I really do apologize, but a 400MB file might kill us. Really.) (Louis Wu 01:40:36 UTC)

Halo 3 Documentary - now Mobile
Mintz writes to point out that the Behind the Scenes vid is now available at Halo: Portable, in pocket-sized versions; 33 mb for PSP, 18 mb for iPod, 13 mb for Pocket PC. Go grab a copy! (Louis Wu 21:44:38 UTC)

Halo 3: Behind The Scenes
Occasionally, they release me from the chains that hold me to this desk, and take me outside to see the sun. (Or the stars, depending on the hour.) And as welcome as these breaks are, sometimes they come at... inconvenient times. Tonight, Bungie released Halo 3: Behind The Scenes, a new piece from Jim McQuillan. (Jim's the guy behind Film Oasis, the company that made the Halo 2 Making Of documentary that shipped with the Limited Edition Halo 2 discs. Bungie liked him so much they hired him fulltime.) Our forum is awash with discussion, but in case you haven't already seen it, you should go grab a copy - it's seven minutes long (!!), available in WMP9 or QuickTime, in sizes ranging from 320x180 (about 25 mb) up to 1280x720 HD (about 400 mb), and it's fascinating. Go grab the biggest copy you can handle, and see what Bungie themselves think about Halo 3! (I'll toss out a potential warning; it's possible that the QuickTime HD version has its last 20 seconds corrupted; it was that way for me, and for several others. Bungie is aware of the issue, and checking to see whether the file on the server got corrupted during upload; if it did, it'll be replaced soon.) (Louis Wu 03:53:08 UTC)

Tasty Weekly Update
The Weekly Update is up over at Bungie.net, even though they had a major power outage today (probably that enormous bank of cooling fans in the back going rampant) - info about Video Games Live (and PLAY!, a different series altogether, though you wouldn't know it from the way Frankie wrote it up tonight), plus much more about playlist changes, and some really tantalizing stuff about an upcoming documentary short. And a really cool ASCII Mister Chief. Go read! (Or read it in our Weekly Update Archive, where it's actually formatted better. OMG it's update 77!) (Louis Wu 00:16:31 UTC)

The Glide Dragon
Se7en One put together a documentary on the Glide Dragon (otherwise known as QuadWings, seen primarily on the Delta Halo level of Halo 2) - it's built entirely in 3ds max. It was submitted to the MPRRS - and didn't pass... but KP agreed to offer hosting space on Boomerica, so you can visit SO's forum post for a download link. 41 mb, WMP9 format. Before we get a bunch of email about this... almost all the info in this documentary was made up by Se7en One; it's an excercise in rendering more than a canonical look at a Bungieverse creature. Don't let that stop you, though! (Louis Wu 15:30:23 UTC)

F.E.A.R. - learning from Halo 2
Not really Halo-related, but it seems to be inspired by more than one Halo success story, so... According to geek.com, it's been confirmed that there will be a Director's Edition DVD available to US buyers of the game F.E.A.R - and that along with items like a 'Making Of' documentary, there will be a F.E.A.R. machinima episode from Rooster Teeth Productions - interesting to see how this goes! Thanks, tLove. (Louis Wu 15:17:10 UTC)

RtG - save 150 mb
Nirvana has put up a low-res version of Halo 2: Road to Glory, the fan-made documentary released last week. It's 280 mb in WMP9 format (QuickTime coming tomorrow), and available for direct download. If 421 mb was too much for you - grab this one! (Louis Wu 15:58:35 UTC)

Road to Glory - the Release
Last week, we released a trailer for a full-length (80 minute) documentary, created by a pretty obsessed Halo fan. I posed a question on our forum - would folks be interested in downloading the entire thing (400+ mb)? The response was pretty positive - so here you go. We're providing two BitTorrent links - one for a WMP9 version, one for a QuickTime version - both are 421 mb. We're providing a pretty serious amount of seed bandwidth for these, as well (12000 KBit/sec each), so even early downloaders should be fine. In the next couple of days, we should have a dedicated page up for this movie, with information about how to order a DVD version direct from Noah, the creator. (He's not looking to make money on this - the cost will cover the blank DVD media and the shipping, nothing more.) Again - this is the story of a group of Halo fanatics (and their families) as the excitement builds towards the release of Halo 2. It's quite well-made, ultra-geeky (but how could it not be?), and pretty fun to watch - but there's nothing blowing up, and no sex, so if you were weaned on MTV, you might find it slow. This is why you have high-speed bandwidth. Grab a copy! (Louis Wu 23:14:30 UTC)

New Maps - here now
As many have noticed, the 5 new maps are now available for download on Xbox Live (just head to the Content Download section of Xbox Live). If you're a Live Subscriber, you'll have to decide whether paying the $12 today is worth getting the maps ahead of the DVD (which will cost $20, but will be usable on multiple Xboxes, and will contain a new documentary and a rendered mini-movie). Oh, the choices! (Louis Wu 14:00:27 UTC)

Halo 2: The Road to Glory (Trailer)
Noah Gallop and his friends are Halo fans. So much so, in fact, that Noah created a film documenting their wait for Halo 2 last year. It's a full-length film - 80 minutes long. (The Hi-res WMP9 version is over 400 MB.) As such, it probably has a limited audience... but I think he did a wonderful job capturing the devotion some of us felt towards Halo (and where that devotion came from), and what this did to us in the ramp-up to Halo 2. It's part documentary, part tribute film, part parody of the silliest parts of fandom. We're not quite prepared to handle the full release yet - but Noah's put together a short teaser (2 minutes, about 25 mb) to whet your appetite. (WMP9 format, 24.8 mb | QuickTime format, 25.3 mb). There's a forum post here - feel free to let us (and Noah) know what you think of the film, and whether you'd be interested in DVD copies. (Noah's considering this.) (Louis Wu 11:56:06 UTC)

Dual SM Jeez.
There's a line in the upcoming Killtacular documentary that goes something like "If you need to reload when you're dual-wielding, you're basically screwed." Today's One One Se7en is a perfect illustration of this concept. (Louis Wu 16:19:35 UTC)

Sex, Drugs, and Halo Pros (Part 1)
Team GAG created a documentary-type vid called 'Sex, Drugs, and Halo Pros, Part 1', an 8-minute condensed view of the team's road trip from Chicago to Houston to participate in the MLG tournament that took place there in March. Three guys, a car, a video camera, and a pro Halo tourney... it's a lot of fun to watch. Heads-up for those just looking for gameplay footage; part one covers getting to the tourney itself; there's very little gameplay at all.) If you visit their website, you'll find download links for hi-res (640x480, 73.3 mb) and low-res (320x240, 30.6 mb) WMP9 versions of this video. ConorOberst has mirrored the hi-res version - and to that we add our own mirrors (hi-res WMP9, mythica.org | bungie.org, low-res WMP9, bungie.org | mythica.org) and a QuickTime version, as well (hi-res, 59 mb, bungie.org | mythica.org, and low-res, 29 mb, mythica.org | bungie.org). This puppy's pretty big; if you have bandwidth to spare, put up a copy, and send us a link; we'll add it to this post! Update: Thanks to Feenix, who's added all four versions to the collection at That Weasel Television. Update 2: trigger119 writes to say that the two hi-res versions can be found on HaloMachinima.com. Halo 2 Expansion Pack - now for sale
EB Games is now offering the Halo 2 Expansion Pack - $19.99, containing 9 new multiplayer maps, a new cinematic video (!!), and a new mini-documentary video from Bungie. Ship date is listed as May 24th. Did EB Games post this a little too early...? No word from Bungie yet about the availability of certain parts of this directly over Live - more when we know it. Update: Looks like there's a pretty sizeable thread about this already on our forum - nova posted it last night. I haven't read the whole thing yet - but lots of people are complaining that they have to pay for this. I cannot understand why nobody willing to wait for an official announcement from Bungie - we have no IDEA whether the material will be available via another route, and what (if anything) it will cost. Update: looks like the listing has been pulled from the EBGames website. No real surprise there... (Louis Wu 11:13:48 UTC)

MTV's Making The Video
Back in early November, MTV put up a special called 'Making The Video Game: Halo 2', which took a sort of documentary look at the making of the game. (It wasn't very much like the DVD that comes with the Limited Edition... but it was interesting. Bungie.net mentioned it here - we put up some info here.) As far as I can tell, today was the last day of its rotation in the MTV on-air schedule... so we can put up a copy for download. Or... more accurately, we can publicize a download that's been available for quite some time. Icetiger, over at HaloPlanet, recorded this and posted it at FilePlanet a couple of months ago - it's 21 minutes long, WMP9 format, 77.5 mb (commercials yanked). For folks who don't want the WMP9 version, I've created a QuickTime version - 77.8 mb. Grab the one that works best for you! Update: this movie, in both QuickTime AND WMP9 flavors, along with several other recent movies, are now available also at That Weasel Television - if you'd like the WMP9 version, but don't like (or can't use) FilePlanet, this is for you! Bangin' Choons
Looks like the Weekly Update is over at Halo Babies tonight... he's down in LA, helping out with the Documentary DVD, and a good chunk of the update is about that. And giant women. And spastic colons. And... the first instance of the whole game, put together in one piece. Go read. (I'm glad he warned people about the spoilers in the DVD - if you care about the plot, play the game first.) Thanks, Schedonnardus. (Louis Wu 00:08:35 UTC)

Art Call
SketchFactor has posted a note over on Bungie.net that artists and content creators might want to look at. The filmmaker behind the upcoming 'Making of Halo 2' documentary is calling for images and movies of fan-created artwork that MIGHT be included on the DVD in a Fan Art showcase. (Be aware that anything already on our site - in the Miscellaneous Art, Wallpaper, Movies, or Miscellaneous sections - has already been combed through; he's looking for unreleased or underexposed material.) Read the news post carefully for details about what's needed, and how to get it to him. And don't dawdle... time's a'wasting! (Louis Wu 20:10:01 UTC)

Best Buy Bundle - now cheaper
Back in November, we reported about a bundle being marketed by Best Buy - a controller and a DVD with Halo material on it. At the time, it was $19.99. (The DVD contained no 'new' material - but it did contain a hi-res version of the 'Inside the Xbox' documentary that showed at X03 last year, and that we put online in December.) By Christmas, we had reports that this bundle had jumped up to $39.99; it wasn't such a great deal at $20, it seemed like a silly purchase at $40. Well, Bentllama, your friendly neighborhood Halo 2 animator, happened to notice that TechBargains is reporting that Best Buy has dropped the price to $8.99, shipped free. Now it's not such a bad deal! (Louis Wu 10:28:40 UTC)
