Once More Unto The Breach
As many of our forumgoers have already discovered, the Halo: Reach ViDoc promised earlier this week is now online - swing by Bungie.net for download links. It's a nearly eight-minute look at what Bungie hopes to accomplish with the release of this game - and it shows off the really polished documentary style Bungie is becoming known for. All the taglines we've heard so far have been tucked in ("from the beginning, we knew the end") - but just as the content is full of new tidbits, so is the discussion. Download this in the highest-res you can manage, because it's worth it. And make sure your movie viewer allows you to step through frames, because they've put in quite a number of goodies that will be chewed over by fans for weeks to come. Update: for those with trouble with direct downloads, or the web in general, it's on YouTube and Xbox LIVE Marketplace. (Louis Wu 15:55:52 UTC)

Inside District 9
Tommy92L released Inside District 9, a Halo machinima that looks at what might happen after the end of the District 9 movie. (If you haven't seen the film yet, this video will contain spoilers, obviously.) He did a great job pulling off the documentary look - check it out! (Louis Wu 16:12:38 UTC)

I feel bad for the Donkey Kong guy.
IGN put together a documentary on Moto-Neural Demyelination. Never heard of it? There's a reason for that. Go watch, and learn. Yes, it's Halo-related. (For what it's worth - I think they could have picked a better name for the disease - it cuts awfully close to REAL motor neuron disorders. I don't think they were shooting for 'mean', though.) Halo Wars - Universe Expanded: Act 2 - Evolution
IGN has posted part two of its "Halo Wars - Universe Expanded" series; swing by and watch a very nicely put-together documentary on the making of the game and its story. Thanks, Exanubisleader. (If you'd rather watch these in HD, you can download it on Xbox LIVE Marketplace for free - Part 1 is up now, Parts 2 and 3 will be out next week.) (Louis Wu 23:40:20 UTC)

Looking for HW questions
Chris Paladino, from Gamerscoreblog, just twittered a request for questions:

CPaladino wants your Halo Wars questions for an upcoming mini-documentary piece. Questions from Halo Fans, and PC RTS players preferred!

If you've got something for him, you can mail it to gsblog@microsoft.com. (Louis Wu 19:23:09 UTC)

Halo 'Elites' Documentary
AcidicReignUK and some friends created a mockumentary for a media studies class - it's a look at the natural life of the blue elite. Nice work! (They all got A's.) (Louis Wu 23:24:34 UTC)

Portrait of Steve Downes
JAY132 found a pair of videos from UnMaskChief - Austin Pruett and Jack Francis McTigue put together an interview (and some nice documentary footage) of Steve Downes, the voice of the Master Chief. (It's in two parts - start with Part 1, then watch Part 2). It's a pretty interesting look at the man behind the voice - and how the Halo phenomenon has affected him! (Louis Wu 15:45:33 UTC)

The Return of the Sniper
Ultimate Dragon let us know that Sniper vs Noob Documentary #3 has been released - it's more a vehicle for showing off fun Forge ideas than a serious machinima, but it's nicely presented. Take a look! (Louis Wu 10:59:02 UTC)

Journey's End
On Essentials, Disc One (the disc that comes with both the Limited and Legendary Editions of Halo 3) is a six-part documentary called 'Anatomy of a Game: Making Halo 3'. (We reviewed it just before Halo 3 was released.) One of those parts focuses on Halo's story - and that piece, reshuffled a bit, is now available as a free HD download from Xbox Live Marketplace. (It's fifteen minutes long, and more than 750 MB.) It's a fantastic piece of work, and if you haven't seen it, certainly go grab it. If you don't have Xbox Live, it will be available shortly for download on Bungie.net (and here). Thanks to AlStrong for the first heads-up. (Louis Wu 19:41:45 UTC)

Official Halo 3 Soundtrack Website Opens
Greg, at Music4Games, was the first to let us know about the Official Halo 3 Soundtrack website - it's full of goodies. You can listen to snippets of songs, watch a short (but well-done) remix of the audio portion of the Making Of documentary found on the Essentials Disc One of the Limited and Legendary Editions, read about the discs and the people involved, and (eventually) play in a mini-sandbox of Marty's devising. Good stuff! (There's also a thread on our forum, if you want to discuss this.) (Louis Wu 14:01:17 UTC)

Game Invasion to broadcast Essentials Disc One
Looks like a significant chunk of the Essentials Disc One (the extra disc that comes with both the Limited and Legendary editions of Halo 3) will be available online, via Comcast's Game Invasion, starting Thursday (the one-month anniversary of the relase of the game). The entire 'Anatomy of a Game' documentary, plus the 24-hours-in-the-life-of-Bungie piece 'Git Ta Werk', will be available to watch. Thanks, MasterChief2829. (Louis Wu 20:45:30 UTC)

Halo 3: Sci vs Fi
Last week, The SciFi channel showed a special they called 'Halo 3: Sci vs Fi'. It doesn't seem to be anywhere on their schedule any more - but someone's uploaded a streaming version to the MLG Gameroom. It's an interesting 20 documentary of Halo 3, with interviews with lots of Bungie employees and celebrities. (Louis Wu 18:40:09 UTC)

Halo 3 Launch Documentary
Mat Galvin sent us links to a five-part video documenting the Halo 3 launch in Universal City, Hollywood. It includes interviews with Bungie's Vic DeLeon, Allen Murray, and Jonty Barnes, comments from tons of fans, some truly bizarre moments. Each piece is about 4 minutes long - go watch 'em in order.

No spoilers - it was all recorded before the game was played by these folks. (Louis Wu 12:53:33 UTC)

The Halo 3 Albania Project
This one's pretty odd - The Halo 3 Albania Project is a video documentary of an effort to bring Halo 3 to Albania... or more specifically to a Peace Corps volunteer working in Albania. There's no actual footage up yet, but there are clips from both the volunteer and the filmmaker linked off the documentary page. (PG-rated dialogue warning.) (Louis Wu 18:41:54 UTC)

May 16 - B-Day.
Over at Bungie.net, a new top story has gone up - and it's a doozy. The Halo 3 Beta finally has fixed dates: May 16 through June 6. (If you don't have a calendar handy, that's three weeks, Wednesday through Wednesday.) To give you a tiny taste of what's in store (tiny as a percentage of what's coming, not tiny at all in real terms), there's a new Video documentary - this Vidoc focuses on multiplay, and is CHOCK-FULL of tasty tidbits (including that elusive X Button functionality). You can grab it from Bungie's site in smallish form (320x180 or 640x360), or you can download it for free from Marketplace in glorious 720p hi-res goodness. Go read, go download, and get ready for May 16! Update: GhaleonEB noticed that Frankie put up a post in the NeoGAF forums - it's worth reading, if you're worried that the graphics in the Vidoc look weaker than you'd expected, or that there aren't any water effects, or that the frame rate seems shaky... Keep your shirts on, folks. While what you can see in the Vidoc is pretty darned cool in its potential, it does NOT show the state of Halo 3 as it exists today (and by May 16, it will be even MORE polished). VGL - Behind The Scenes (the beginning)
Over at GameTrailers, you'll find a trailer, along with the first of three full episodes, of a Behind the Scenes documentary about Video Games Live. This is only peripherally Halo-related, in that Halo is one of the pieces played during the concert, but it's pretty interesting if you were ever curious about how these guys got started, and why they're doing what they're doing. Thanks, DHalo. (Louis Wu 22:40:18 UTC)

QuickTime Brute Goodies
I do this with some trepidation... but what's bandwidth for, if not to spend it profligately? Yesterday, we pointed out a couple of sites that had 720p versions of the Brute video documentary for download - but only one of those (GameVideos.com) offered a QuickTime version. And that QuickTime version had a few drawbacks: it was encoded using the h.264 codec (which is really cool, but beyond the power of many processors to handle properly), and it weighed in at 577 mb, leading a number of folks with full hard drives to despair. It also came in at a rather odd size: 1248x702 pixels. We're putting up a copy of that vid (with GameVideo's blessing) that has had all of these shortcomings rectified; our version is encoded with the Sorenson 3 Pro codec (viewable by anybody with a relatively current version of QuickTime), it displays at a full 1280x720 pixels, and it weighs in at 269 mb - big, but still 300 mb shy of the original. (Visually, it's identical.) For good measure, we're tossing in a half-size version (640x360, 88 mb) which has the added bonus of being watermark-free. (Our large version, having originated from the GameVideos file, contains the GV watermark.) Be gentle... (Louis Wu 18:19:22 UTC)

Brute Vid online, lots of places
For folks who don't have a 360, or Xbox Live... the Halo 3 ViDoc 'Et Tu, Brute?' is available at millions of places across the web. (Well, okay, not millions. But a lot.) There are 640x360 versions at GameVideos.com (thanks, z77) and Xboxyde (thanks, Urk), and Wraith-ops.com (thanks, Wraith7n). There's a 428x240 version at JeuxFrance (thanks, Xavier De Coster). There are lots and lots of YouTube links (here's one, here's another, there are plenty more). I'm sure there are others - but this is a reasonable collection of links. YouNewb has 89 screenshots. (There are a bunch at that Xboxyde link above, too.) If/when higher-res versions become available on the web, we'll be sure to let you know. (Louis Wu 16:25:22 UTC)

Jungle Trigonometry: Food
The big news today is going to be the Brutes documentary released on Xbox Live Marketplace earlier this morning, and we'll certainly get to that - but there's a bunch of other Halo goodness that yearns to be free, as well. First up - trigger119 is hosting, over at GamingTV.org, a new vid from SodaGod, called 'Jungle Trigonometry: Food'. It's bright, it's funny, it's well filmed. Have I said SodaGod is one of my favorite machinimators? He is. Grab this - it's worth the download. (We've got mirrors, but as of now they don't seem to be needed.) (Louis Wu 14:59:53 UTC)

Something Vidoc This Way Comes
Bungie has posted information (TASTY information) about the new video documentary to be released soon - where 'soon' means 'tonight at 2 am PST'. If you don't have an Xbox 360 and access to Xbox Live Marketplace, don't fret - there will be options, in the not-too-distant future, we promise. What will you see here? Well, it'll be your first glimpse of Halo 3 campaign play (though Bungie warns that none of it is set in stone - things can easily change before the final product ships). And lts and lots of other stuff. Get ready. (Louis Wu 23:34:18 UTC)

Confirmed: Pistol De-Nerfed
Whoa. The Bungie Weekly Update is up WAY early this week - and it's WAY short. (The Bungie building lost power, so Frankie wrote it from a nearby coffee house.) There's some clarification of yesterday's Brute fiasco (nice to hear that you won't need a 360 to watch the documentary), and some fun stuff about Penny Arcade's Child's Play charity dinner last week. Go read, either at Bungie.net or in our Weekly Update Archive! (Thanks to zugy for noticing this before I headed out this evening.) (Louis Wu 21:13:09 UTC)
