Halfway through...
Yeah, we had all sorts of plans; webcams from multiple places through the house, rotating Halo PC entrants, and on and on... everything fell by the wayside when the playing started. Offensive Tetraboxing kicked off last night; the first of almost 40 guests showed up a bit after midnight, and the first round of Halo gaming continued until 3 am. 4 hours later, folks rolled out of bed, munched through breakfast, and set up gear... and by 10:30, we had more than 30 people playing. Film Oasis, the house that made the DIscovery Channel Halo documentary last year (and that is making a Halo 2 documentary right now) is here, and filming the fans, the action, the food... it's a blast. We don't have a lot of content to pass along right now, because frankly, we're just playing too much... but we'll at least shoot along a group shot of a subset of the visitors. (They couldn't all fit in the frame.) There aren't any names yet - but we'll add 'em in the writeups. (You SHOULD notice KP standing up in the back - pretty neat, since he has only one knee.) ISO: Great Stories
A post was put up on our forum this afternoon - it calls for fan feedback. There's a documentary in production about Bungie and the making of Halo 2. It's going to contain, among other things, profiles of Halo fans with something interesting to share. Folks who win Halo tournaments, folks who create cool artwork inspired by Halo, folks whose lives are changed by some aspect of the game. If this is you (or someone you know), check out the forum post, read the details, follow the instructions. Who knows - a few million people might end up watching your story! A new protocol for movie distribution
Thanks to David Tinkler, President of Two Degrees, for providing links for a new peer-based protocol for serving large Halo-related files. You'll find information (and mirror links) in this protocol on both the Inside Halo 2 documentary mirror page posted recently, and the large Halo E3 Demo trailer mirror page. Client is currently Windows-only... but you should check it out! (Louis Wu 22:59:58 UTC)

Inside Halo 2 - in Hi-res splendor
Back in September, an interesting documentary was shown at the X03 event in France. It was a behind-the-scenes look at the making of Halo 2, created by Film Oasis, the company behind 'Inside the Xbox', a documentary shown on the Discovery Channel last summer. Unfortunately, the only version available has been a shakey-cam piece filmed at the show by a French journalist - better than nothing, but still unsatisfying. If you had access to a Best Buy in the United States, and were willing to spend $19.99 for a new controller, you could get a bundled DVD that contained the hi-res version of this film... but it wasn't available on the net. Until now. Thanks to Jim McQuillan at Film Oasis and the legal eagles at Bungie, we're able to bring you this video, in all its hi-res beauty. There are two versions; for the big bandwidth folks, there's a 100 mb, 640x480 copy, and for folks on smaller pipes, you can grab a 38 mb, 320x240 version. We've put up a pair of copies of each (on files.bungie.org and mythica.org) - but we're always happy to spread the bandwidth pain; if you've got the space, grab a copy, and send us the link, we'll add it to our Mirror page. This one's worth seeing. Update: Two new mirrors for each size - Coerce.net and Subnova have both tossed their hats into the Bandwidth ring. Thanks, guys! Update 2: Brian Towne has put up BitTorrent seeds for both large and small versions - grab these if you have the client; not only will they be faster, but they'll be less strain on our mirrors. Thanks! (Louis Wu 17:27:56 UTC)

New Halo 2 material - on store shelves?
Whoa. So back on August 31, Rampant Cowboy pointed out a thread over at TeamXbox which was discussing a product someone found in their store's database called 'XBX-Halo 2 BUNDLE' - price was $19.99, release date was November 15. RC's thread went nowhere - there were a couple of posts, but I think MY feeling at the time was that this was a packaged version of the E3 demo, or something. On November 2, RC brought it up again, because there was new info over at TeamXbox. Again, the thread went nowhere - this time, because Mat Noguchi (a Bungie programmer) shot it down. Yesterday, however, Opie301 mentioned SEEING something like this on the shelf at his local Best Buy... and SketchFactor actually confirmed that there IS something to it. He was under the impression that it wasn't supposed to be released before Thanksgiving... but it really is new Halo 2 material, and it's not just the E3 demo vid. A cookie to the first reader who tells us what's actually THERE. (And thanks, belatedly, to Rampant Cowboy, for not getting discouraged. :) ) Update: Gah, I should read the whole thread before posting. Opie went back to Best Buy, and picked up the package (a DVD/Controller bundle) - and it's all material he's seen before. (The 'Behind the Scenes Halo 2 Documentary' sounds like it might be the Discovery Channel piece that we weren't able to put online for legal reasons... so maybe there IS a valid reason for buying this if you don't need the controller.) A full list of what's on the DVD is in that last post. (Louis Wu 12:04:15 UTC)

Part 3 of the Bungie Fanfest Documentary released
There's a report up on Bungie.net about part 3 of the Bungie Fanfest Documentary; this episode looks at the Halo 2 trailer, and the fun surrounding it. As has been the case, you can find 320x240 versions on Bungie.net (linked in that article), or higher-res versions here:

Older episodes are linked in this post. (Louis Wu 10:50:30 UTC)

The Bungie Fanfest Documentary
Last May, Bungie held a massive Fanfest during E3, in Los Angeles... and Mr Smiley was there with a video camera to capture all the fun. Back in late June, we mentioned part 0 - the intro. Well, there were a few snags in production - but things are back on track, and now parts 0, 1, and 2 are all online. You can find small versions of all three episodes available over at Bungie.net - and we're hosting larger versions here. (Please - only grab the version you want; conserve our bandwidth. Thanks!)

Whew! (The versions at B.net are all much friendlier to those on slower connections; they're all in the 4-12 mb range.) Episodes 3 and 4 will be coming soon! (Louis Wu 07:46:36 UTC)

And the Rocket goes to...
Emil of the CobaltNova Halo League would like to announce the first annual Rockets On Prisoner awards:

"With approximately 240 to 300 Halo movies having been developed since the game's release it was time that the community begin to recognize the very best among them. This year the "Rockets on Prisoner" award will be accorded to the winner in each of the following categories: Best Movie, Best Cinematography, Best Screenplay, Best Editing Sound and Visual Effects, Best Musical Score, and Best Documentary."
They've already got quite a few well-known (and not so well-known) films up on the lists of potential nominees. Head over and check out the talent. If you don't see a film you think should be entered, let them know. The deadline for nominations is Sunday, July 27th, so get going! (mnemesis 06:49:08 UTC)

Jen autographed your WHAT?
Mr. Smiley has been working on a full-blown Bungie documentary (it was mentioned in the recent Fanfest Flashback story at Bungie.net). Now, you can download Episode 0 from Bungie.net. 10.9 mb QuickTime, or 12.3 mb WMP9 - it's not the documentary, but it's a Red vs Blue-style intro to the documentary! Take a look. Discovery Channel Documentary next week
Catching up... SketchFactor reminded everyone on Bungie.net that next week marks the debut of the Discovery Channel special on the Xbox, which highlights Bungie. Check it out (and see Sketch's writeup for a link to a teaser trailer)! (Louis Wu 20:31:22 UTC)

Whew - I'm not sure he took a breath during that...
SketchFactor, a whirling dervish of updating action, has put up FanFest Flashback - Part 2, covering the day of the fest itself (with the chaos of the day nicely captured by the writing style). Check it out. (There are also links to a trailer (in both WMV and QT formats) of an upcoming Fanfest documentary put together by Mr. Smiley... Sketch's links are a bit funky, but they'll probably get fixed at some point, and figuring out the real links shouldn't be too hard.) Update: Links for the documentary trailer movies are fixed. It waren't Sketch's fault; looks like the site scripting has gone a bit wonky... (Louis Wu 02:31:40 UTC)

Discovery Channel Details
It's been mentioned that one of the videos shown at the fanfest involved a documentary being done for the Discovery Channel. Forum visitor none posted a summary of the actual piece, as well as showtimes. (Be aware that the documentary will not contain all the footage shown at the fanfest.) (Louis Wu 08:15:06 UTC)

Now THAT'S intriguing.
Somehow this got missed by the majority of Fanfest attendees... thanks to Warbow for pointing it out. A few days ago, a letter went out to all attendees, with information about logistics, a schedule, and a description of what will be going on. One of the subsections of the general overview was titled 'Videos Galore' - it described some of the video footage that will be visible throughout the night. Most of it was expected, and I guess I must have skimmed it... because I missed this line:

"...a Halo 2 documentary being produced for an upcoming special on the Discovery Channel...

Whoa. A WHAT? Okay, certainly MY appetite is whetted... if we discover more about this before the show, we'll be sure to post it. (Louis Wu 02:21:18 UTC)
