Movies, movies, movies
trigger119 stopped by with lots and lots of movie links to be found at GamingTV.org - drama, gameplay, music vids... go see what's what. (Because we've hosted mirrors of all the other episodes, we're putting up mirrors of Episode 4 of Jamie98s' 'Halo 2: The Series' - this one is 'The Arbiter', and covers The Arbiter and Oracle. It's available in its original WMP9 format (77.3 mb), or a locally-produced QuickTime version (81.1 mb, a good 28 mb smaller than the version available on GTV.org). Grab the one that plays best for you.) (Louis Wu 19:42:45 UTC)

Help me get down!
Jamie98s let us know about his latest music video - this one's set to the Killers' "Why do I keep counting?" Great filming, as usual; awesome shots, cool effects, and (something a lot of Halo music vids seem to forget to do) action that's actually synched to both the music and the lyrics. Check it out! Available in WMP9 format (35.3 mb) or QuickTime format (33.3 mb). (Louis Wu 15:09:10 UTC)

Dock of the Bay
Jamie98s put together a short little music vid set to Otis Redding's 'Dock of the Bay' - a soldier tires of killing. Interesting interpretation - and, as usual with Jamie's work, cinematography rocks. Only a bit over 16 mb, in either WMP9 format or QuickTime format. Update: Mirrored now at GamingTV.org. Halo 2: The Series Episode 3: Metropolis
Jamie98s continues his feature-length movie of Halo - today he releases Halo 2: The Series Episode 3. This one is set in Metropolis - a Covenant Scarab is wreaking havoc on New Mombasa, and it's up to the Chief to destroy it. The episode is nearly 21 minutes long, and weighs in at 152 mb for the WMP9 version, or 141 mb for the QuickTime version; check it out! Update: The WMP9 and a QuickTime encoded with H.264 are available at GamingTV.org, as well - thanks, trigger119. (Louis Wu 13:21:41 UTC)

Into the Ocean
Jamie98s put together a new music video, setting Blue October's 'Into the Ocean' to Halo action - nicely done. 'Twas originally released at GamingTV.org, but we're hosting copies, as well (including the original WMP9 version, 29.9 mb, and a locally-encoded QuickTime version, 30.1 mb). What are you waiting for? (Louis Wu 20:57:43 UTC)

Halo 2: The Series - Episode 2
Jamie98s dropped us a note to let us know that Halo 2: The Series - Episode 2 is done and available at GamingTV. Some really excellent work here, showing the Halo 2 story from the Pelican crash through the tunnels of New Mombasa. Great execution, on all fronts. The Jackal sniper shot, the Cortana sequence, the Hunters... Awesome! Update: We have a local mirror, for anyone who still needs it (168 mb - it's a 23 minute long segment), as well as a QuickTime version (162 mb). (mnemesis 05:25:19 UTC)

Halo 2:The Series - Episode 1
Busy news night - last bit for a while. Jamie98s let us know that progress on Halo 2: The Series is moving at a much-faster-than-expected clip: Episode 1, Cairo Station has been finished. He uploaded a version to GamingTV.org - with his permission, we've mirrored the WMP9 version (124 mb), and added a QuickTime version (121 mb). Cinematography is fantastic - he's done an amazing job of turning the Halo 2 storyline into a watchable movie. This chapter is nearly 15 minutes long. (Louis Wu 03:05:13 UTC)

Halo 2: The Series Trailer (redone)
A couple of years ago, comradx started a pretty ambitious project - he was going to create a full-length feature film based on Halo 2. He released the first of seven episodes, covering Cairo Station... but then abandoned the project. Jamie98s has just picked it up; he's starting from scratch, and has plans to actually finish at some point. He's a significant way into the production - but what we have for you today is a trailer, to whet your appetite. 16.4 mb in WMP9 format, 16.3 mb in QuickTime format - and more on the way when we get it. Update: These have now been mirrored by GamingTV. (Louis Wu 17:18:26 UTC)

New vids up at Halo: Portable
Funkmon wrote to point out two new portable-formatted vids at Halo: Portable - Jamie98s' We Become Silhouettes, and the newly-posted Legend 3 (whose provenance is still being debated) are now up. Go grab 'em for your PSP/iPod/Zune! (Wait... people actually OWN Zunes?) (Louis Wu 14:42:13 UTC)

Editing Contest Results Announced
On Wednesday, the Halopeño So Hot Editing Contest (announced in November, submission window closing in December) had its winners announced; Kanbo, who won second place, let us know a few days earlier, but the actual results page went up this week. Congrats to Jamie98s, Kanbo, and Devlin, for pulling in First, Second, and Third Place, respectively! Swing by the Halopen page to view the winning entries. (Louis Wu 13:01:33 UTC)

Space Dementia - Redone
Back in early December, Jamie98s released Space Dementia, a movie about a guy on a space station who wasn't in full control of his faculties. It was actually a very well-done vid, but Jamie wasn't happy with it; he didn't like the 'Chapters' that broke up the action. So he remade and re-released it. You can find WMP9 and QuickTime (H.264 encoded) versions at GamingTV.org. (They should be fine, but we'll put up mirrors if it looks like they're needed.) (Louis Wu 21:23:48 UTC)

We Become Silhouettes
Jamie98s posted a note on our forum about a new music video he'd created, 'We Become Silhouettes', about a survivor of a nuclear blast coming to grips with the death around him. Fantastic effects and filming; this is the sort of thing music videos should aspire to. He posted a mythica link to a WMP9 version in his forum post, but we're offering both a mirror for that (30.4 mb) and a QuickTime version (29.6 mb); this rocks. (Louis Wu 14:58:52 UTC)

Halo 3 ad - remade
Cool. Jamie98s whipped up a version of the Halo 3 ad using the Halo 2 engine (well, with a little help). Good stuff! 6.6 mb in WMP9 format, 7.2 mb in QuickTime format. Grab a copy! (Louis Wu 22:31:17 UTC)

Space Dementia, and Movies in General
Okay, first off - we've got a new movie for you. It's from Jamie98s, and it's called Space Dementia, and it's really quite good. Jack Walters thinks he's ready for active duty again - but all may not be as it seems. Great effects, astoundingly high compression (so that a 15 minute 640x480 movie weighs in at only 70 mb, and STILL looks pretty good), great story. Download it in WMP9 format (70.6 mb) or QuickTime format (71.5 mb) - I have to say, I'm pretty happy with the overall quality of new machinima these days. Which brings me to my second point - the MPRRS is NOT dead, it's still under reconstruction. Cybrfrk got called up for jury duty, so he's got less time for coding than we'd originally thought - but we'll get there, and the final product will be better (and more useful) than the original was. Thanks to all who've offered to help (we don't need coding help, but we WILL need reviewing help, once we reopen), and if you've written to us, worried that it's gone - don't worry, it really is coming back. Meanwhile, go watch Space Dementia. It's really well-done. (Louis Wu 00:51:29 UTC)

The Melody
Jamie98s let us know about a new movie he'd completed, 'The Melody'. The MPRRS is still closed for reconstruction, but I found The Melody to be an interesting departure from the normal Halo fare, so I told him I'd host it. You can grab it in WMP9 format (56.7 mb) or QuickTime format (50 mb) - Jamie's movies usually have great cinematics and composition, but this one adds some funky post-production editing for a really unusual story. Check it out! Update: This has now been mirrored at GamingTV - thanks, trigger119! (Louis Wu 20:50:47 UTC)

New Mombasa - A Different View
Double News Postage - RVideo also submitted a new piece of work to the MPRRS recently. The first time through, it seems that most of the reviewers didn't get what he was doing. He overhauled the entire piece, incorporating some of the advice they'd given - and though some STILL didn't get it the second time through, enough liked it that it passed. This vid is in the genre - sort of - of Jamie98s's 'Oh So Beautiful' vids; it's a look at Halo from a perspective you don't normally get. (He uses a modded Xbox for the most spectacular stuff.) There are sweeping vistas above the city of New Mombasa, seat-level views from speeding warthogs, stop-motion action sequences. I love it. In a relatively unprecedented move, I'm going to host the first version he submitted, too, because there were a couple of sequences he cut for the passing version which I found exceedingly cool. (The view from the Scorpion's gunner seat at the end of the bridge is one that stands out.) This might not be for everybody - some reviewers totally missed the concept, and marked it down for being boring, or having no real action, or no plot. (Both versions have a similar goal - to give you a view of the city of New Mombasa that you don't get in-game - but the second version did a much better job of tightening in on the concept. However, if you really don't WANT to see another view of the city, you won't find much for you in either version.)

Final Version (Niven Edit): WMP9 (21.8 mb) | QT (24.8 mb)
Original Version (Lonely Scarab Edit): WMP9 (41.7 mb) | QT (46.8 mb)

In any case - I was pretty impressed with it, both as a final product and as an evolution; give it a look, with an open mind... you might be too! (Louis Wu 16:20:19 UTC)

Clone Tutorial for Halo Machinima Makers
Jamie98s used a pretty cool technique in his recent 'Mombasa Massacre' film; he had battle scenes with many more than 16 fighters onscreen. He's not the first to do this (ipushmycar did it in Biohazard, about a year ago, and I'm sure someone will remind me of other examples), but he's the first to write up a tutorial to help others use the technique in their own films. Swing by our Miscellaneous section to read about it in detail! (Louis Wu 19:14:55 UTC)

To Heaven
Jamie98s has created another gorgeous piece; I'm starting to wonder if there shouldn't be a fast lane for certain moviemakers, with respect to the MPRRS. This one is called 'To Heaven', and tells the story of one Spartan's journey to heaven. Superb camera work, wonderful composition, and a perfect music choice. Absolutely worth watching. WMP9 version is 22 mb, QuickTime version is 20 mb. Go grab. (Louis Wu 01:39:58 UTC)

The Mombasa Massacre
Jamie98s is turning out to be one of the top moviemakers in the Halo universe; I can't remember a film he's made that I didn't like. His latest work, The Mombasa Massacre, blew through the MPRRS without a scratch. It's a slightly different take on his last piece, Chaos on the Creek; this one also tells the story of two factions that lived in peace until violence broke out... but this time, it's a third faction causing the trouble. Cinematography rocks, and the huge battlescenes are REALLY well-done. This one's a watcher. It's big - 12:30 long, almost 100 mb to download... but worth it. Grab 'The Mombasa Massacre' in WMP9 format or QuickTime format. If you make machinima, study it. (Louis Wu 23:11:06 UTC)

Chaos on the Creek
Wow. We fixed the MPRRS upload problem, and in short order 6 movies entered the system. The first one in was the first one out - successfully. jamie98s (previously known primarily for his 'Oh So Beautiful' series) created 'Chaos on the Creek', a story of two factions that decide they can't live together. Cinematography is awesome - watch this one for the camerawork alone, even if you don't like the story. (Which is pretty good in its own right.) Grab it in WMP9 format (29.1 mb) or QuickTime format (28.3 mb). Awesomeness. (Louis Wu 01:52:39 UTC)

Oh So Beautiful 4
Jamie98s has made a series of videos detailing the beauty of Halo's scenery. (Check our news archives if you missed the first three.) Yesterday, he submitted a new one - Oh So Beautiful 4 sticks with multiplayer maps... gives you a new perspective on the killing fields we spend so much time in. The MPRRS reviewers loved this one. Grab it in WMP9 format (62 mb) or QuickTime format (56 mb). (Louis Wu 16:33:24 UTC)

Metal Gear Solid (Halo Style)
Wow. Jamie98s has put up a bunch of movies over the last four months - but this one might be my favorite. It's called Metal Gear Solid, and it's (as might be expected) a story starring Solid Snake, from the MGS series. Jamie's plot description: "Solid Snake is deployed to a secret miltary base to disarm a nuclear warhead and destroy a top secret project known as Metal Gear." Audio is from MGS, video is all Halo (with a few special effects thrown in). Fantastic job - simply fantastic. It's rather large (107 mb in WMP9 format, 100 mb in QuickTime format), because it's rather long (32 and a half minutes), so we're starting it off as a BitTorrent download. You can grab the WMP9 torrent or the QT one - your choice. We're also providing quite a bit of seed bandwidth (2000 kB/sec per torrent), so downloads should be speedy, and should STAY speedy if early downloaders leave BitTorrent open after they've gotten a copy. In a day or two, we'll provide direct download links, as well, for folks who can't handle BT. Enjoy it - I sure did. (Louis Wu 22:17:16 UTC)

Oh So Beautiful III
My goodness - I'm not sure what happened, but it looks like I've taken the last 18 hours off, with respect to this website. Sorry! First up today - a movie that passed the MPRRS a couple of days ago; a third installment of Jamie98s' Oh So Beautiful series. This one (Oh So Beautiful III) takes a 7:22 stroll through the single-player maps, looking for gorgeous scenery - and we all know, there's plenty to find! You can grab this in WMP9 format (25.2 mb) or QuickTime format (26.3 mb). Enjoy! (Louis Wu 13:51:08 UTC)
