Miscellaneous Art updated Thanks to Joel Loukus, who submitted another sketch of the Halo Marine. "Just a little doodad I doodled..." We think he's adorable. Check him out in our Miscellaneous Art section! (Louis Wu 01:09:53 UTC) (permalink)

Station Halo goes (semi) live Peter Askam of HCC sends along the URL of a new Halo site: Station Halo. It's badly broken on Macs, though (NS, IE, and iCab), and Linux boxes (NS, Opera) - I didn't even bother looking on a Windows box. Check it out, though... who knows, it might get fixed. (Louis Wu 20:22:52 UTC) (permalink)
Halo SETI Marines 7 day stats posted Blam!... Dink! The Halo SETI Marines finally pass Team #Amiga!, only to be hammered down by the Israaliens. Position 43 in the Battle of the Teams remains firmly in their grasp. (Probably didn't help that the SETI servers lost over 1000 of the Marines' units this week, and 500 last week...) A great big welcome to kevin murray, and his 2180 units... as well as Daedalus and Elf, and all the other non-top-400 joiners. Full weekly details can be found on the 7 day stats page. (Apologies for the delay in putting these up.) (Louis Wu 19:45:52 UTC) (permalink)

Halo Orbit (German) comes online Xerxes writes to say that a new German site has hit the Halo scene: Halo Orbit. (This is no relation to the defunct Orbit site which closed up 7 months ago.) Germany is becoming the biggest home for Halo out there! (Louis Wu 17:40:07 UTC) (permalink)

Matt's October 27th Halo Update Good Lord. 4 weeks in a row, Matt Soell's managed to write up weekly progress reports for the Halo team (and the Oni team, we should note, posted over at Oni Central). This one is chock-full of home-cooked goodness - lots and lots and lots of weapons, oodles of net game types, D&D research... the boys have been busy. Hey - the Producer position, open since Nathan left, has been filled! Welcome, Rick Ryan. And we'd be remiss if we didn't wish Alex S. a belated birthday. But enough rambling... go read Matt's words! (Louis Wu 01:58:57 UTC) (permalink)

Microsoft Hacked - is Bungie safe? Heh... thanks to Alan Stott, who passed along this article from The Register, discussing a major security breach at Microsoft. Although the Register's spin on this story is more dramatic than, say, CNN's, the potential damage is great. The story focused on WinMe code, but we're wondering about the Gaming Division... personally, we'd keep an eye on Blizzard. (The related story listed at the Register is even funnier.) (Louis Wu 15:06:20 UTC) (permalink)

MSN highlights Halo Jeff Campen noticed that the Halo trailer (The E3 2000 movie) holds a place of honor on the MSN WindowsMedia.com Broadband page... It's right up in the top section. (Not new material, but interesting placement.) (Louis Wu 20:51:37 UTC) (permalink)
Details about Shirinian Marathon's Story page The Marathon's Story page has an update about Konrad Sherinian, former Halo team member, from an anonymous source, describing a bit more of what he had been responsible for. From the tone of the note, there is an implication that Konrad's leaving wasn't entirely voluntary. Details can be found in today's What's New entry. (Louis Wu 12:12:19 UTC) (permalink)
PS2 launched last night - Xbox beware! When the Xbox debuts next fall, its biggest competitor will probably be the Playstation2, which was released in the US and Europe last night at midnight. The hype was tremendous... though in some cases, it was hard to tell what was actually being sold. Wait... who's that in the background? (Louis Wu 09:27:36 UTC) (permalink)

Halo Command (US) is still alive noddy99 wrote to inform us that the US Halo Command is no longer dead. Well, it seems it hasn't been dead since last month, if the news page is any indication. We've moved it off the dead links. (The quizlet, though, is dead... it wants to know what platform you are looking forward to playing Halo on... PS2 and Dolphin are choices, but the Xbox is not.) Flippable wallpaper Okay, here's an odd one. Halo Command UK has started a section called ''Flippapers'... it's wallpaper you can turn upside down. (The obvious question will remain unasked.) If you're intrigued (and who wouldn't be?), head on over and take a look! (Follow Media to Stuff, then to Flippapers.) (Louis Wu 18:20:06 UTC) (permalink)

Happy Birthday, Stefan Sinclair! Thanks to 3of9 (undead), who caught this before Matt had a chance to berate us for missing it (he posted it to the R.net forum): Happy Birthday to Stefan Sinclair, another Halo Dev Team member! October is the month for Halo guys, I guess. (Louis Wu 15:24:52 UTC) (permalink)
Halo SETI Team 7 day stats posted The Halo SETI Marines hold on to their tenuous position at number 43 in the Battle of the Teams, bumping the buffer to 23 units ahead of The IsraAliens, thanks in large part to our new recruits (hotpoo and greener) and to Banzif II's increased crunching. Let's keep it up! In local action, DarthFlounder increases his streak to 8 weeks for La Crunch Honneur, and Trux takes the Frogblast award. Details can be found on the 7 day stats page. (Louis Wu 15:12:47 UTC) (permalink)
The Monkey and the Hippopotamus The secret of the wall-hugging hippos, revealed! Well, okay, not really... just the monkey-impaling ones. Matt Soell tries on his Rudyard Kipling coat for an afternoon. Personally, I think he looks better in purple, but it's a hell of a funny read anyway. (Louis Wu 03:24:18 UTC) (permalink)
Logos page updated Back on July 26, 1999 (a week after MacWorld NY 99), we snagged a logo off the bungie.org Hotline server. It had no identifying marks, so we put it up, and asked the author to mail us. Yesterday, he did. And he told us that it was a rough version of the final product. Therefore, we now bring you the final product, on our Logos page. Thanks, TypeleveN! (Louis Wu 01:21:22 UTC) (permalink)

UT modder to use Halo engine? hmm... real, or imagined? Kosh drops us a note about an interesting Halo engine sighting. CheckOut.com interviewed Michael Hamlett, the lead designer of Strike Force, a Counter-Strike-like mod for UT. It's still freeware (and not officially supported by Epic), but apparently, potential deals are in the works. At one point, Michael mentions future possibilities: We even have some things in the works using the Tribes 2 engine and possibly the Halo engine. Errr, too much info there...
So... is he just talking about what his team is looking to do in the future? Or is there more going on behind the scenes than we know? In either case, it's fun to speculate. ;) (Louis Wu 13:54:25 UTC) (permalink)

Bungie and the Brain Heh... Simon Marek dropped us a line: Just writing after seeing your re-post of Matt's listing of the newBungie staff members. Couldn't help but notice the presence of JohnHoward. Now I don't know how many others have noticed, but the PrimeMinister of Australia is also called John Howard. Another step inBungie's plot to take over the world? As Hamish would say: "Coincidenceor...?"
Doesn't seem like THAT uncommon a name, but you never know... (Louis Wu 13:42:28 UTC) (permalink)

R.net's forum gets overhauled Rampancy.net has switched over to the new forum Ferrex has been working on for a couple of weeks. Halo-Australia's short story contest gets celeb judges Hey, cool! A couple of days ago, we mentioned Halo-Australia's short story contest... seems they've gotten a couple of celebrity judges for this thing! Matt Soell of Bungie and Steve Brown of PCGamer UK will be rating your work. Nice going, guys! (And that's THREE news items today that mention Matt. Hmm...) (Louis Wu 04:05:17 UTC) (permalink)
Matt's Halo update, at R.net this time This week's Halo update is over at Rampancy.net... not even on their forum. (Has Matt been reading the oni.bungie.org forum recently?) The news is, there isn't much news... although they're putting bullets back into the game. (We're happy, how about you?) Thanks, Matt, for keeping to your weekly schedule! Matt's Halo update, at R.net this time (Louis Wu 03:43:57 UTC) (permalink)
Matt clarifies the makeup of the Halo team A week ago, Matt Soell posted an update on the state of Halo, and in it, he said (among other things) - Jason is splitting his time between AI work and story work with Jaime and John.
John? Who's John? Well, we followed up, and Matt was kind enough to fill us in on the newest members of the Halo dev team. John Howard is a new guy. He was part of FASA when they came over, and we kinda stole him away.
The rest of the new people are as follows: - Ed Smith (art)
- Bernie Freidin (code)
- Stephen Okasaki (job unspecified)
Konrad Shirinian is no longer part of the team, and Stefan Sinclair is now a part of the online team (although he's currently on loan to the Oni team... which is interesting, since Oni doesn't have an online component any more...). There are lots of other new people at Bungie right now who AREN'T working on Halo; the whole organization is growing. Thanks for the update, Matt! (The rest of the Halo team were delineated by Matt at MacWorld SF almost a year ago.) (Louis Wu 00:01:00 UTC) (permalink)

Halo SETI team 7 day stats posted A little late, the morning's been busy... The SETI server seems to be having some serious problems keeping up with submitted results, so it's hard to tell where the Halo SETI Marines stand, but one thing's for sure... they're doing their part to find the Covenant! DarthFlounder continues to crunch those units, taking La Crunch Honneur for the seventh (!) week in a row. camw takes the Frogblast award for the second straight week, leaping up 75 positions to 255. Chucky must have turned off some of his computers for his birthday, because his output has dropped by half this week... or could the computations for Halo be using up those computers? Big Myth tourney could go Halo Mock writes to let us know that airbornerangers.org are putting together a Myth tournament called 'WWII: Risk Global Domination Tournament'. In Mock's words, it is 'by far the most ambitious Myth tournament to date'. Why are you reading this on a Halo page? If all goes well, we will run a Halo Risk tournament, with a map of the Ringworld, if possible. We, of course, would have to wait until some orders get solidified... in fact this style of tournament is easily transferable to any multiplayer online game.
Sounds intriguing! If you're interested, take a look at the Risk site. The Radio section has broadcasts worth listening to, for more info. (Louis Wu 14:06:17 UTC) (permalink)

Ultimate Gamer posts some E3 trailer grabs We just got mail from Geert Roete, saying that there are some Halo shots posted at the Dutch site Ultimate Gamer. They're just screen grabs from the E3 movie, though, and the text is very sparse (one sentence), so I'm not really sure what the deal is. Simultaneous release news a bit off Okay, we goofed. Turns out the bit about Halo being released simultaneously on the Mac and the Xbox is somewhat old (and since superceded)... apparently, it was posted to a Mac gaming site in August, and 8/10/2000 was interpreted (understandably) by a European as October 8, not August 10. The eNewsletter in question had this to say, back in August: During the keynote address [at MWNY], Steve Jobs welcomed Ed Fries onto the Macworld stage. Vice President of Games for Microsoft, Fries reassured the audience. Yes, Microsoft certainly will release Halo for the Mac. In fact, it will be released for the Mac at the same time it is released for the X-Box, Microsoft's new videogame console.
This has since been, um... corrected by Matt Soell as overenthusiastic reporting by Apple. Sorry to get everyone's dander up. (Louis Wu 23:18:52 UTC) (permalink)
Mac and Xbox versions simultaneous? Wow! Kudos to Harry Al-Shakarchi, who noticed that the latest Apple monthly newsletter reminds readers that the Mac version of Halo will be out at the same time as the XBox version. ('Reminds us'? Seems to me we never KNEW that in the first place!) This came from Microsoft's Vice President of Games. Corroboration as soon as we get it... (Louis Wu 13:47:47 UTC) (permalink)

Island Four, behind the firehouse Good to know that even when real life gets in the way of updates, fans keep on top of the good stuff. Island Four (otherwise known as Nathan Bitner, former Producer of Halo) is back on the forums, spouting Neruda, Blake, and his own feverish rantings. A line from an R.E.M. song comes to mind: This boy and girl that gather pearls Of wisdom falling from his mouth Wash off the blood, wash off the rum

Halo SETI Team 7 day stats posted The Halo SETI Marines gain another 6 recruits this week, and remain firmly in 43rd position in the Battle of the Teams. DarthFlounder again outcrunches the competition, and Trux (a new recruit last week) leapfrogs over 48 team members to garner the Frogblast award. The most interesting movement, though, is the second-place cruncher this week... Chucky. Does the 35-50% increase in crunching (compared to the previous couple of months) mean the Halo dev team's computers have been beefed up... or that they haven't been used as much this week? All the gory details can be found on the 7 day stats page. Pax. (Crux Fidelis 14:20:53 UTC) (permalink)
Games that redefine their genre... sort of Seen at Battleground: Halo - Speedy3D has an article comparing Black and White, Team Fortress 2, and Halo, discussing how they redifine their respective genres, and dreaming about how sweet it would be to see these in time for Christmas. Aside from the wholly unrealistic estimate of release dates, it was a fine article, at first... but my eyes glazed over when I read this line: The story that is running behind Halo is reminiscent of Quake 2.
To each his own, I suppose. Excuse me, I have some more Banks reading to do. (Louis Wu 13:46:11 UTC) (permalink)
Halo video Music Clip from Down Under David, an Australian fan, sent us this note: This is David from the Australian Music Group Seventh, one of our fans made up a video Music Clip using Halo footage. The song in the clip is "I'm Gonna Fly" we recorded the track ealier in the year with Halo in mind. The song won the Australian Triple J Unearthed Contest, which groups such as Silver Chair, Savage Garden have won and so on... The track I'm Gonna Fly is free for download from our site as well. If you get time check it out, its pretty cool...
The clip is in RealMedia format, and weighs in at a bit over 20 megs, zipped. The video is an edited version of the E3 movie, and fits surprisingly well with the music. We're hesitant to point out 20 meg download links any more, after what happened to Cannibal Harry, so be careful. If you want to check out the band, their website is here. (All the pictures in the article use the old-style, outdated screenshots, Larry Niven is named in connection with the storyline, and IntelGamer suggests that there are rumors "that Microsoft is withholding release of HALO until the X-Box of released", among other tidbits.) The fact is, though, that not many games could generate a new preview like this in the current drought that is Halo PR. (Louis Wu 02:27:26 UTC) (permalink)
