3D printing is changing film doober187 pointed out a video on YouTube from Legacy Effects, born out of Stan Winston Studio - it discusses how 3D printing is revolutionizing special effects in mass media (mostly movies). The Halo diorama, created as part of the runup to Halo 3, plays a significant role (almost a minute and a half of this 8-minute piece). The Halo content starts around 1:10 or so - but the whole thing is a fascinating watch. (Louis Wu 22:13:49 UTC) (permalink)

This traffic is not a natural formation. Back in September, we mentioned an upcoming personal digital assistant, available at some point to owners of Windows phones, based on Halo's Cortana - The Verge has more info about that project, which may actually be usable sometime this spring. Beorn (and others) are less than thrilled. How do you feel? (Louis Wu 20:50:01 UTC) (permalink)
Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. VideoGamer.com noticed a Halo Waypoint tweet posted earlier this week - a suggestion that the return of Master Chief might be coming sooner than we thought. Is this a coy denial of the rumor that Halo 5 (or whatever it's called) has been pushed back to 2015? Or is it a hint that we might see a new title (maybe Halo 2 Anniversary) sooner than the 2014 holiday season? Or is it just a piece of fan art that someone at Waypoint liked enough to retweet? Only time will tell. (Louis Wu 20:32:30 UTC) (permalink)
Halo 4 WTF Moments: Jump The Shark The Tyrant has released the penultimate episode of his Halo 4 WTF Moments videos - all that remains is the finale. This moment is frustrating - but not, unfortunately, uncommon. It comes with some commentary he originally meant to use in his LASO Challenge series (he went a different direction with that, ultimately) and ends with a fun montage of epic LASO bites. Go watch!

'I need a new edition' And the stories about Halo 2 Anniversary (and the often-connected rumors of a delay in the first Xbox One title from 343) continue to swirl - GameZone says that in a recent interview they did with Steve Downs (the voice of Master Chief), Downes confirmed both that Halo 2 Anniversary will be coming this year... and Halo 5 (or whatever it's going to be called) will not. Still no word from 343, either way. Update: looks like the wording in the GameZone transcript might have been a little overstated. A Facebook conversation was posted on NeoGAF yesterday, in which Downes stepped back from any real confirmation. Thanks, DEEP NNN. (Louis Wu 23:57:01 UTC) (permalink)

Social Buzz for Xbox One Halo Soaring Apparently, Gametrailers has created something they call the 'GDEX' - it's a social media index of games and gaming platforms. Because of the rumors swirling around the idea of a Halo 2 Anniversary edition, the Xbox One Halo title has jumped from #29 to #9 on the GDEX - biggest jump of any game this week. Interesting! (Louis Wu 22:40:41 UTC) (permalink)
Halo 4 WTF Moments: Well Enough Alone A common technique employed by folks who are running Halo with All Skulls On is to take advantage of 'skips' - areas where you can use routes not anticipated by the developers to keep enemies from spawning, and thereby decrease the number of things shooting at you. Sometimes, though, skips aren't worth the trouble. The Tyrant's latest Halo 4 WTF video is a great example of this. Not only does performing the skip take him forever and a day... when he DOES succeed, he succeeds too well! He gets rid of so many enemies, he can't advance! So he goes back to trigger the final bad guys... and ends up triggering EVERYTHING. Ouch. (Louis Wu 22:08:43 UTC) (permalink)

Wait, what? So we sort of skipped the whole 'potential insider shows up on NeoGAF and leaks Microsoft's next year's worth of announcements' thing a few days ago, mostly because it was more trouble than it was worth to figure out if anything was actually confirmable... but it's pretty funny that a Spanish video game seller actually put up a page for one of the leaked items. Halo 2 Anniversary, which has not been announced by anyone officially, can now be preordered from XtraLife. (The artwork they chose for the cover is fan-created, and includes a gun which didn't even appear in Halo 2.) Thanks, GameRevolution (who snagged a screenshot, in case XtraLife's page disappears). Wow - talk about proactive! (Louis Wu 20:04:33 UTC) (permalink)

A Spectacular Spirit of Fire Whoa. Mark Kelso built a LEGO replica of the Spirit of Fire, with reference help from one of its designers, that comes out to 7 feet long (by almost two and a half feet tall by more than a foot and a half wide). It took him FOUR YEARS to build (mostly because life kept getting in the way). It's pretty amazing. Black Six pointed out the Brothers Brick page he found it at. (Louis Wu 19:47:16 UTC) (permalink)
