January 28, 2008 Link to this post Halo 3 vs Call of Duty 4: someone can't count. I'm a little confused; news all over the web has Activision claiming that Call of Duty 4 was the biggest-selling title in 2007, with "more than seven million units since its launch in November" (the official press release is here, at GamesIndustry.biz, for example). But didn't Major Nelson tell us 3 days into January that Halo 3 had sold 8.1 million copies? NPD's reports are not accessible to non-subscribers, so I can't access the lists these people are using to build their numbers... but something seems fishy. Update: Smurfa points out that Gamespot, too, noticed this discrepancy, and speculated that the CoD numbers are copies actually sold to consumers, vs Halo numbers which are simply numbers shipped to retailers. (This is just speculation - but it seems feasible. Hopefully, clarification will be forthcoming.) (Louis Wu 18:51:33 UTC)
