Halo Custom Edition - Available
At 9:50 pm Central last night, Cysco announced that Halo Custom Edition and the Halo Editing Kit were being released sooner than expected. There is a thread containing a list of mirrors for both items (they're BIG), also on the Gearbox forums. First word here, both on our forum and via email, seems to be Munkeegutz - thanks! Go grab 'em! (Louis Wu 14:10:03 UTC)

HEK Tutorial - in readable HTML
Gearbox will be releasing Halo Custom Edition and the Halo Editing Kit very soon. In preparation for that event, Gearbox and Bungie released the HEK tutorial to a couple of websites so that fans could get a look at what they were up against, and maybe get started on external stuff. Unfortunately, the HTML of the original release was... well, shakey. Depending on which browser you decided to use to view it, you got somewhat random views of some sections. I've put in a solid chunk of work to make this package clean - I haven't removed the frameset (which is, I suppose, the next step), but these docs will look pretty similar on any browser now, and (maybe more importantly) will look mostly like what their authors intended them to look like. It's coded to be a standalone document; that is, I could zip up the directory and make it available for download, and folks would be able to use it nicely offline. I'm not sure we have the bandwidth for this right now (It's a 40 mb package), but we'll think about it. In the meantime, peruse what's there, and get ready for the release of HCE! First Strike - Switching Rails to avoid light (or something)
Crispy Spartan points out another Weekly Update for First Strike. The majority of it discusses the new uncertainties introduced by the existence of Halo Custom Edition - more from the team when they know what they're up against. There's also a bit of infrmation about progress itself. Give it a read! (Louis Wu 18:33:58 UTC)

Marc Tardif talks to Gamespy
Gamespy has posted an interview with Marc Tardif, Director of Marketing and 3rd Party Relations at Gearbox. There's some good info on what Halo CE (Custom Edition, not Combat Evolved) really is, and how it will be supported.

GameSpy: What's the reason behind having a separate .exe for this update?

Marc Tardif: The new software was the method chosen by Bungie / MGS (Microsoft Game Studios) to deploy the things that Gearbox has done to Halo since the game launched. Given the amount of time we've been working on this stuff and given the value of the material that's being released, we are really happy to finally get the software into the hands of Halo PC customers.

This, finally, explains the delay in the release of the HEK; it wasn't as simple as 'make sure the HEK works, and put it out there', it was 'make sure all the new features being added (fast shaders, better networking, other multiplayer tweaks) will continue to work properly with HEK-created material'. Halo Custom Edition is, in effect, a whole new ballgame. (Halo CE and HaloPC are NOT compatible; you will not see listings for HaloPC games in a Halo CE browser, and vice versa.) It'll be interesting to watch how this all shakes out! (Louis Wu 11:36:43 UTC)

You've got Questions? Gearbox has Answers.
A couple of fans have compiled all the questions and answers from the Gearbox Q&A thread into a single post, for easier reading. There's an awful lot of info in there, so read carefully. This covers questions both about Halo Custom Edition and the Halo Editing Kit; they're separated for ease of understanding. (Louis Wu 11:21:28 UTC)

Halo Custom Edition
In tandem with the HEK announcement, Cysco, over at the Gearbox forums, has changed the HaloPC forums to Halo Custom Edition forums. What is Halo Custom Edition? Glad you asked - Cysco answers some basic questions in this thread. It's a completely unsupported version of Halo, available free to all HaloPC owners, that introduces lots of new features - including the ability to play user-created (think HEK) content. THIS is what we've been waiting for; THIS is why it wasn't as simple as 'dump that HEK out there'. There will be lots more info in the next few days about this stuff... but for now, you can discuss on our forum, on Gearbox's forum, or at Bungie.net - it's the topic of the moment. (Thanks to Reppyboyo and L337Mondo for the first notices.) (Louis Wu 21:13:57 UTC)

Halo 3 mention clarified
Nice catch. A month ago, we posted a note about a mention of 'Halo 3' in a Steve Ballmer speech last fall; we warned that it had never been confirmed, but nevertheless, it was an interesting tidbit. Narcogen, over at Rampancy.net, did a much more thorough reading of the 'History of Bungie' article put up at B.net (I'd actually set it aside for a slightly quieter time), and found a mention of the speech (and a refutation, more or less, of the Halo 3 comment) buried in the Halo 2 section. Nice to have this to point to down the road! (Louis Wu 10:41:14 UTC)

Call me.
Rapture has added some pretty cool wallpaper to his cellphone... Update: Narcogen, unwilling to be outdone, added a Halo 2 screenshot as the background image of his Handspring Treo. w00t! Further Update: Narcogen has added a download link for his image, and BOLL has pointed out his own (much older) phone customization. (Louis Wu 09:33:01 UTC)

Random Halo Homage
Da Loaph discovered an interesting little page; it's a part of the Oddlots Irregulars website, and it pays tribute to Halo. There are a couple of comics on the page, as well as a couple of custom gametypes (downloadable, even). Take a look! Update: It's now 2005, and Oddlots has changed its site layout dramatically; that page no longer exists. The two images do, though: Cortana | MC. If the day comes when they're no longer hosted there, you can find them here: Cortana | MC. (Louis Wu 17:01:52 UTC)

Stikfas Master Chief
Again - we're behind. Lots of cool stuff has come in over the past few weeks. It's all still here - and I hope I can get to it soon. DeWayne Muse sent in a few shots of a customized Stikfas Master Chief - he's pretty slick! Check out the pics. (Louis Wu 11:21:34 UTC)

They'll be giving away 5 lifetime gold accounts, 2 lifetime Platinum accounts, and one 1-year Platinum Plus Gamer account. HBO-GameDaemons - wounded but not dead
Quick status update on the HBO-GameDaemons server, for those confused by recent events... GD is moving us from the initial (pretty haphazard due to its early implementation) server setup we had with them to a more standard install. There were a few glitches in the process (some of which are still to be resolved). All custom gametypes are offline until someone sorts things out in the morning. Hang tight; they're not gone, just in limbo for a bit. In the meantime, most of those gametypes are available on the HBO-Subnova server. (The GameDaemons server is running, it's just that it only has the few standard gametypes we'd configured in the rotation.) We'll post a small update when things are straightened out. CPL talks to Randy Pitchford
CPL has posted an interview with Randy Pitchford - it's pretty focused on league gaming (suprise, surprise), but has some really intriguing info in it. Like this question:

Will HaloPC support demo-recording/playback functions?

Randy : A multiplayer demo recording function is in development at Gearbox. We hope to be rolling this out in time for the winter CPL event as it will happen automatically with some of the changes to allow modification of the game that are happening soon. We must allow the possibility that it won't be available then, though. Our priorities have shifted a lot since launch because our number one priority is responding to the needs of our customers.

Woohoo! Go read the rest. Found this at Blue's News, thanks, Ash. (Louis Wu 09:37:16 UTC)

HaloQuery - see what your server is doing
Brian Hurley's HaloQuery app has been updated for BSD Unix. We've got a copy running here, showing the status of the HBO dedicated server. He's given us permission to release the package (488K) containing the source code, plus executables for Win32, Linux, and OpenBSD. (Any other unix flavor simply requires a quick compile.) Eventually, this will be updated to use html templates, so that folks can customize the look to match their sites... but for the time being, it's quite functional as is! (Louis Wu 18:23:45 UTC)

Okay, I want one.
Funky - there's a yellow warthog showing on the Bungie webcam at the moment. (If it's gone by the time you read it, you can see a saved picture here.) Whether this is a customized hog (a standard Joyride hog, repainted by a Bungie employee), or a future offering from Joyride, is unknown at this time. It nicely matches the Hog billboard from the Halo 2 E3 trailer... Nice spotting by Poocho. (Louis Wu 17:01:14 UTC)

New Halo PC movies - for paying customers
Gamespot has put up 5 new Halo PC clips - but all are behind the Gamespot Complete wall. If you don't pay, you don't play. (I no longer have a Gamespot Complete membership, so I can't even describe them to you.) Thanks to strato99l for the heads-up. (Louis Wu 00:00:03 UTC)

Action Figures - in July?
Matt Ogonowski asked JoyRide directly about the availability of the Halo Action Figures... and the response he got from thier customer service department read, in part:

They will begin release in mid-July.

A bit sooner than Bungie's forecasting... but Bungie's always been a bit conservative. Nice to know! (Louis Wu 18:13:27 UTC)

Halo PC Update - from Bungie
For those frustrated by the quietness of the Halo PC teams (multiple Randy Pitchford interviews notwithstanding), swing on by Bungie's Tru7h and Reconciliation site for a major update. (It can also be found here, in a more permanent location, in case you're reading this down the road.) Michel Bastien talks about where their time has been spent, and what's coming... and offers a custom screenshot (you'll have to post your request on Bungie's Underground forum). Go read it - now! Randy Pitchford talks to Shack
Shacknews has interviewed Randy Pitchford, of Gearbox - there's a boatload of tasty information there. Of great interest to many HBO regulars is the support Gearbox plans to provide to the mod community...

The degree to which Halo is huge on the PC is the degree to which we‰ll support the modification community. We believe it‰s going to be huge. We‰ll be talking about our initial steps to help a modification community grow around the title soon and will be talking about what kind of tools and other SDK material we‰ll release and how it can be used sometime around the launch. Dave (Mertz) and Matt (Armstrong) have been really looking forward to doing it...
Sounds like the tools won't be released with the game itself, but soon afterwards, instead. He also touched on where the differences between the Xbox version and the PC version lie:

Randy Pitchford: From a content point of view, single player is pure. The new content and features we‰ve added have all been in the area of multiplayer.

We have, however, corrected a few much less than significant issues that have been discovered by some of the millions of Xbox customers and we‰ve been able to pick and choose between feature differences in the PAL and NTSC versions of the Xbox game (as we have both code bases). This manifests itself in a few different ways that are mostly really subtle - I‰m interested to see what kind of changes/differences the most hard-core fans actually discover. I hope you understand that we wouldn‰t be doing our jobs if we actually advertised such subtle adjustments...

Read the rest of the interview; there's info on input devices, film capabilities (or lack thereof), coop possibilities, new multiplayer game play features, new vehicles (note the emphasis on the plural), new weapons (yes, the flamethrower is in), and more. Three pages of juicy Halo PC Goodness! (Louis Wu 12:45:59 UTC)

Halo Half-Life mod - up for grabs
Some time ago, BOLL started work on a Halo-related mod for Sven Co-op, itself a Half-Life mod. He's decided to give it away, because he no longer has time to work on it. You can read the details in the Sven Co-op forums... or simply download the existing package. Update: BOLL clarified that Sven Co-op actually allows custom models to be built right into maps; BOLL's project, although including custom models for monsters and weapons, is still just a map. (I think we're simply describing the same thing with different words... but he's right, we should be more accurate in the description. :) ) (Louis Wu 15:22:28 UTC)
