I don't mind a reasonable amount of trouble.
I didn't realize this was possible... but Causeofdeath15 posted a new Halo 2 Campaign trick at High Impact Halo - by skipping an important trigger, you can keep the Malta from being blown up. That's a lot of Marines saved! Thanks, Ducain. (Louis Wu 21:23:38 UTC)
