The Halo Project
It's been a long time since we heard from ICDedPpl - but he sent us a link of his buddy's Photobucket album showing off some great armor pics. thorn696 is a 405th regular who doesn't even play Halo - but he makes armor good enough to win contests (three First Place awards this weekend alone!). Check 'em out! (Louis Wu 22:38:30 UTC)

A call for help from an old friend
This isn't Halo-related, but HBO's always been a family, and sometimes family needs help. We got word from ICDedPpl (search our news if you don't remember him) that his fiancée, Aimee, has been diagnosed with a tumor inside her skull - you can read about it on his blog. There's a PayPal link up if you can spare anything, but prayers and emotional support are also gratefully accepted. Dan, and Aimee - we're pulling for you! (Louis Wu 12:54:01 UTC)

Comcast puts Halo OnDemand
ICDedPpl uses Comcast cable, and he recently noticed that the OnDemand menu has an entire Halo category, with clips of things like skull locations and other tidbits. If you have Comcast, check it out! (Louis Wu 13:38:44 UTC)

What a wonderful world
ICDedPpl found a fun article in a Papua New Guinea newspaper - 'Halo, one of the best video games created'. Amazing what passes for news these days... (Louis Wu 13:04:00 UTC)

Linkslinkslinks
Narcogen, at Rampancy.net, gathered up a bunch of links to stories about today's Halo news. You can also check out ICDedPpl's mention of this CNN Money article. I'm sure there'll be plenty more - but it's time to leave the keyboard for a bit... (Louis Wu 20:08:56 UTC)

7 on the 7th Results
Our most recent 7 on the 7th contest had the fewest number of valid entries to of any contest to date; I blame the short timeframe and the relatively unorthodox ruleset. That said, we got some great entries! The hands-down favorite of all the judges was Omega's 'Grunt Crossing' - but this is a 7 on the 7th contest, so we don't HAVE just one winner - we have 7. You can see them all from this hastily-put-up page (winners have stars). Congrats to RAWPOWER95 (One One Se7en, painted), Doctor Zoidberg (Mister Chief), ICDedPpl (Legendary Skull, painted), Simen (Marathon logo), ManKitten (One One Se7en - nice lawn!), and przybysz86 (rocket launcher) for making the cut - and thanks to EVERYONE who contributed images to this contest! Frankie and Sketch are down in San Diego for Comic-Con, so I can't even tell you what the winners have won yet - yes, this is unusual. Sorry. Soon! In the meantime, check out the entries. Update: doh! I forgot to pull the .htaccess file - you couldn't get in without a username/pass. Sorry! Fixed now. (Louis Wu 20:33:17 UTC)

Halo at E3 - rumor acknowledged.
Gah. I wanted to avoid this altogether, because it seems like it's better just to see what happens... but when rumors start showing up on CNN, you gotta pay 'em SOME attention. Lots of places have been hinting that E3 could be the first place where new Halo footage is seen this year - and now Chris Morris' Game Over column joins the list of hinters.

Expect to see the first footage from the next installment of "Halo," which might shift some focus away from the competition. (The game won't hit stores until 2007, however.)

'Expect' might be too strong an imperative... but it's certainly possible. Anyway, I've now acknowledged the rumor, so any more emails concerning it (from any site) will be blissfully ignored. (Thanks, ICDedPpl.) (Louis Wu 20:10:26 UTC)

Taste-making power
CNN has an article about video game music - it uses Video Games Live (the live concert tour) as a jumping-off place, but touches on the advances video game music has made over the years. Halo gets a mention, of course, since the Halo 2 soundtrack has sold 100,000 copies. Thanks, ICDedPpl. (Louis Wu 20:51:45 UTC)

Pick a pretty picture
ICDedPpl reminds the community that today is the last day to vote for the Halo in my Hometown contestants. Apparently, lots of people visited, but not very many voted. So go vote! (Louis Wu 11:42:31 UTC)

Bafta dominated by HL2
The Bafta Interactive Entertainment Awards were held yesterday and today in London - and Halo 2 went home with the Best Xbox Game award. In every other category for which it had been nominated, however (Action/Adventure, Online & Multiplayer, and Animation), it was beaten out by Half-Life 2. Ouch! Thanks to ICDedPpl, who saw it at Mirror.co.uk. (Louis Wu 21:51:10 UTC)

Shades in Manila
MLG makes the news in the Philippines, it looks like... INQ7.net has an article summarizing the league and how it started. Sundance Giovanni is rosy about the future:

"I see pro gamers pulling down six-figure endorsement deals and being treated like celebrities. I also think you'll be seeing more and more of MLG on television as those players develop into stars. Eventually MLG will grow into a media powerhouse with a huge silver office tower in the middle of Manhattan. My office will be the one with the hot tub," he quipped.

Thanks, ICDedPpl. (Louis Wu 16:33:22 UTC)

More Prizes for Halo in your Hometown
I meant to post this yesterday - things got away from me. We mentioned a new contest being hosted by ICDedPpl on Friday - by Saturday, the prize list had grown sizeably. Go visit the contest page to see what's up for grabs at this point; there are now 7 prizewinning slots, with a pretty hefty collection of schwag for the top ones. If you have any skill whatsoever with an image editing program, you should enter this! (Louis Wu 18:13:37 UTC)

Halo in your Hometown
ICDedPpl is hosting a new contest - Photoshop Halo into a real-life picture, win cool schwag. (Okay, you don't need to use Photoshop - any image editor will do, including MS Paint. But the Halo part has to be there.) Go read all the details - including the $250+ in prizes - over at his website. Get cracking - submissions are due by March 4! (Louis Wu 10:28:21 UTC)

Halo 2 still taking over college campuses
ICDedPpl sent in a link to The DePauw Online, the student newspaper of DePauw University, with an article written by a non-gamer about the popularity of Halo. You gotta wonder when the folks interviewed say stuff like 'you can play 64-player games in Halo 2'... (Louis Wu 13:49:27 UTC)

7 foot MC on eBay
ICDedPpl found an auction on eBay for another one of those MASSIVE 7-foot-tall Master Chief statues used in European promotions. Shipping is from Switzerland, so if you're in the US, count on it costing a fortune. Current bid is $610, and the reserve has not yet been met. 9+ hours left as of the time of this writing; if you're interested, bid now!

News Roundup
There's a bunch of Halo 2 news that popped up last night, too... again, I doubt this is a comprehensive list, but it should lighten the mailbox just a little.

  • MLG posted a writeup of the DC event that took place last weekend; thanks to Dyslexia for the text, and Dolbex for the heads-up. This contains a very nice counter-argument to the folks who yell that Halo 2 is for noobs... and lots and lots of great pics. Full bracket standings are also there.
  • G4TechTV has posted a 'Halo 2 Tips, Tricks, and Strategies' article, a somewhat random collection of stuff. Fun read.
  • TalkXbox has posted Week Twelve of their Strategy series - Burial Grounds Team Slayer. (Thanks, TricKy.)
  • Another bit over at MLGPro.com - Grudge Matches Begin. This is sort of like Bungie's Halo Humpday Challenges... except it's 1v1, and the COMMUNITY decides who fights, not the players. Go read about it.
  • Arizona State University's school paper has a story about how it's not a contradiction for a church group to organize a gathering around Halo 2. (This one turned up on Google, but ICDedPpl found the same thing at a different link.)

Again, there's probably plenty more out there today... but this makes a dent. (Louis Wu 14:27:33 UTC)

Halo 2 - best ad of the year
Gamespot readers were asked to pick the best commercials of 2004 - results came out today. According to this Business Wire article, the Halo 2 ad from last fall was the overall Commercial of the Year. Kudos to ICDedPpl, who found it at Yahoo Finance before Google found the Business Wire article. (Louis Wu 15:26:48 UTC)

Rise of the Machines
The Red vs Blue crew is at the Sundance Film Festival this week... and the Salt Lake Tribune has found them interesting enough to warrant a feature. A nice general overview... go read! (They see a million downloads a week? That's... um, like 25 or 30 terabytes or so. Gah.) Thanks, ICDedPpl. (Louis Wu 16:33:03 UTC)

Pete Parsons - Game Designer of the Year?
Wired Magazine has announced their nominees for the Sixth Annual Wired Rave Awards - Pete Parsons has picked up a nomination for 'Game Designer' for his work on Halo 2 (hehe). The Wired site itself hasn't been updated yet; it's still showing last year's awards. Thanks, ICDedPpl. (Louis Wu 16:50:34 UTC)

ILB puts ARG in the Spotlight
Hehe - cool. Even though Joe Staten recently stated that the 'I Love Bees' game was NOT canon, with respect to the Halo storyline, it was still an awful lot of fun for an awful lot of people. Looks like someone is using it as the capstone to a new book on Alternate Reality Gaming, due out really soon in electronic form, and next month in a dead tree version. ICDedPpl found this over at Slashdot. (Louis Wu 20:24:06 UTC)

Detroit Free Press weighs in
The Detroit Free Press's Game Master choise Halo 2 as the Free Press Game of the Year 2004 - mostly for multiplayer. (There is a second article with input from other editors, on other games, as well.) Thanks, ICDedPpl. (Louis Wu 21:56:50 UTC)

Wanting More
The Disembodied Brain reviewed Halo 2 - Halo 2 good, Halo 2 ending bad. (A bit more emphatic about that than many others.) Interesting comparison - Halo 2 is like Kill Bill, but before you find out that it's only the first half of a movie Tarantino needed to split. Thanks, ICDedPpl. (Louis Wu 19:22:14 UTC)
