Ghost Town - coming soon
wolfman was first to post on our forum with news of Bungie's upcoming Ghost Town map - Bungie's posted screenshots and an interview with the guys who built it. I'm having trouble getting a feel for the layout from the existing shots... but MAN it's beautiful. Check it out! (Louis Wu 23:16:52 UTC) (permalink)

Halo 3 cleans up at 1UP Reader's Choice PR Newswire has a press release from 1UP.com - their Reader's Choice Awards for 2007 were announced at a special ceremony this week in San Francisco... and Halo 3 did really well. They took home Best Shooting Game, Best Multiplayer Game, and Game of the Year. Congrats, guys! Full details can be found in the 1UP writeup. (Louis Wu 13:09:49 UTC) (permalink)
Why should players care about your stupid story?
Not Halo-focused (although Halo is mentioned in the article, briefly), but very relevant to a large chunk of our readership - Ken Levine, Creative Director of 2K Boston (the folks who made Bioshock) talked at the GDC about stories in video games, and how developers have to walk a fine line between casual and hardcore fans. Your story has to be understandable in a one-paragraph synopsis... but it also has to be deep and interesting to those who delve into it. A non-trivial conundrum! (Louis Wu 13:07:32 UTC) (permalink)
Chris Butcher talks to everybody Tons of stuff coming out of the Game Developer Conference this week - couple of good Chris Butcher bits. Next Generation has a nice article on how Matchmaking has evolved (info from Chris), and Develop Magazine has an interview with him (on a wide range of interesting topics). Go read! What they Play - in brief
USA Today has a news story about What They Play, a website that aims to provide parents with useful and concise information about videogames in the context of how appropriate they might be for their kids. The Halo review on the site mentions the level of violence (predominately human-on-alien in singleplayer, human-on-armored human in multiplayer), the presence of blood ("reasonably restrained"), and the frequency of cursing (way more from other players on LIVE than from NPCs in-game). This could be a useful tool for parents who don't have time to play all games their kids are interested in! (Louis Wu 13:05:31 UTC) (permalink)
CoD4 - still on top
For the third week in a row, Call of Duty 4 is on top of Major Nelson's LIVE usage charts - will that remain true now that the Auto Update has been released? Tune in next week to find out! (Before anyone gets upset that I'm even listing this - we had no trouble at all mentioning that Halo 2 remained on top of the charts for months and months and months, and as has been mentioned by many many people, both CoD4 and Halo 3 are great games, and deserve the praises heaped upon them; which one the public chooses to play more is actually a relevant fact for a Halo news site, whether you, personally, find it important or not.) nefarius armati stopped by with a new Forge project he's working on; we don't generally cover those (there are just too many), but his presentation was unique; he created a QuickTime VR movie to show it off. Nice! (Louis Wu 13:02:37 UTC) (permalink)
