Waking Alex Schwartz sent us word of 'Waking', a 4-part machinima he and some friends created for a machinima class at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. It uses several different game engines (Halo 2, Half-Life 2, Second Life, and Unreal 2004), as well as outside effects added with Maya - the end result is pretty impressive. Running time is about 30 minutes, split between the four acts. Storyline has some Ender's Game, some Matrix, some Terminator... fun stuff. Go check it out! (He started a forum thread here, if you'd like to discuss it.) (Louis Wu 20:03:40 UTC) (permalink)
Red Bull Flugtag - Halo Style Porsche6864 stopped by to point out that his team created a Halo-related soaring vehicle for a Red Bull contest - and now they need people to vote for them, to secure the final slot in the 31-contestant field. Swing by the Red Bull Flugtag site - and give 'em some love! (Louis Wu 14:08:18 UTC) (permalink)
Audio Line Contest Johnrap let us know that Games in Action has extended their One Liner Contest - contestants must record one of the finalists of that contest for the new Audio Line Contest, prize is a copy of the Halo 2 Original Soundtrack Volume 2. Go read the details at the GiA site. (Louis Wu 14:04:01 UTC) (permalink)
Follow the Fleet Edgeworks has posted Episode 6 of the Heretic - some amazing CG work on the space scenes, and a powerful storyline twist. Top-notch machinima - go watch! Thanks to clippit for the heads-up. (Louis Wu 13:59:15 UTC) (permalink)
Mister Cupcake, revealed Jared Rea points out that his girlfriend photo-blogged the making of the Mister Chief cupcakes shown in last night's Weekly Update - yum! (Louis Wu 13:58:47 UTC) (permalink)
Always gotta be careful with fanatics. Heh - look what darthbob found on bungie.net. ;) (We've grabbed local copies, in case they mysteriously vanish again...) (Louis Wu 13:44:11 UTC) (permalink)
Go to the Airport Over at Red vs Blue, Burnie released Director's Commentary for Episode 96 - it's almost more of a podcast than actual commentary on the piece, but there IS some cool stuff about how various shots were put together. (They're definitely getting fancier in their machinima techniques as the series winds down to a close...) Enjoyable, even though the RvB stuff is minimal. (Louis Wu 13:22:52 UTC) (permalink)
H2V and Dedicated Servers The Hired Gun crew has put up a new blog entry, this time discussing dedicated servers for Halo 2 Vista. (The DS doesn't need Vista - only Windows Server 2003. This should help tremendously in finding a host that can handle one.) There's lots of other good info in there - so give it a read! (Louis Wu 12:41:40 UTC) (permalink)
Crazy Secrets Week As usual, Friday night brought a Bungie Weekly Update last night - but I went to see Spiderman 3 instead. (Decent movie, but a bit too sappy in places. I guess that's what you get when you're trying to wrap up a storyline. Amazing effects, no matter WHAT else was going on.) The weekly update ALSO talks about effects - the first third waxes poetic about the quality of the ingame cinematics, and let me tell you, I'm dying to see one now. There's also good info about the status of the Blastacular Map Pack (it should be available to almost everyone, finally, and they're going to be fixing the geometry errors posthaste), a bunch of cool dev tidbits, some positive news about the Friends and Family program (which now has an official start date), and a welcome to Luke Smith. And some funky Mister Chief stuff. Go see what's there! (Or read it here, in our Weekly Update Archive... (Louis Wu 12:30:17 UTC) (permalink)
