Halo 4 Media Blowout
Getting a really late start today - blame the Department of Motor Vehicles. (You can get there 45 minutes BEFORE THEY OPEN and still wait more than 3 hours to be served. Insane.) The press embargo on information collected a couple of weeks ago at 343's offices ended last night at midnight... and the floodgates have opened. If you're looking to avoid spoilers... now's the time to go dark. There is a TON of information out there - campaign, multiplayer, you name it. Hypertrooper has done a pretty amazing job of collating and indexing into a readable, organized collection of links over at NeoGAF - if you AREN'T going dark, this should be your first stop. I don't think I've seen ANYTHING that isn't already on this page. (Louis Wu 16:47:48 UTC) (permalink)

HBO Members and Halo fans alike should be more than familiar with the name Leviathan. Wait... it's on the internet!
Sometimes, you might come across content on the internet that isn't fully accurate. (Hope you were sitting down when you read that.) A few hours ago, the French site Halo Destiny posted this comment on their Facebook page - if you don't read French, it translates to this:
In normal mode, the 4 first Halo 4 campaign missions can be completed within an hour. Bravo life of the game.
This, understandably, might cause some distress if you've been anticipating a long campaign in Halo 4. Luckily, we've got Frank to bust myths - he posted this at NeoGAF:
That's interesting, since nobody from the press or the public has played the first four missions. Oh and Rally point C in mission 3 takes 15 minutes with invincibility turned on.

Check his post, and grab the size that works for you! Update: Beorn has added a dark variant - beautiful for folks who don't want bright desktops! (Louis Wu 15:10:18 UTC) (permalink)
We don't get a whole lot of montages submitted any more - but today, we've got three. And amazingly, they all have something interesting going for them.
- Chappified stopped in with word of Episode One - The Adventure Continues. It's a Halo 3 montage showing off trick jumping... but what makes it unique is that it's all in standard matchmaking. It's pretty amazing to see someone climb the outside of the Pit's Snipe Tower while being shot! Check this out.
- CyReN posted word of a new Halo 3 Dualtage from Lethul and Formal on GAF. Fantastic gameplay (as you'd expect from these two), heavy but interesting editing... and it's all Halo 3!
- RVideo dropped us a line about Fragtage, with gameplay by AfterFraG and editing by ATB and Barker - It's Reach footage, and what it has going for it is some REALLY tightly-synched gameplay. If you're not a fan of heavy editing, this one might be too much for you.
All in all, good stuff. Go watch! (Louis Wu 15:03:05 UTC) (permalink)
Grunts are People Too - Returns!
If you've been reading HBO for a long time, you might just remember Grunts Are People Too - it was a machinima project from MOTHERSTOOTH involving your favorite mini-Covenant. Most, or all, are offline at this point... but we just heard from MOTHERSTOOTH that they're coming back! Check out Episode 1.
(Louis Wu 14:51:39 UTC) (permalink)
Daedalos42 pointed out Murder Miners (it's making quite a splash at HaloGAF, as well) - it's a new indie game from JForceGames that takes a lot of inspiration from Halo. In fact, it's been described as "Halo meets Minecraft" - you can see a video of it in action on The Halo Council. It's in beta right now, and costs only 240 MSPoints ($3!) - it's cheaper than a latte! Go try it out. (Louis Wu 14:47:27 UTC) (permalink)
GI Replay: Stubbs the Zombie
Stubbs the Zombie came out in 2005 - it was the first product of Wideload Games, the spinoff studio founded by Alex Seropian when he left Bungie... and the only game to be released that uses the Halo engine but is not Halo. GameInformer has gone back and played it again for their Replay series - it's not the best look at the game, because they don't take the playthrough particularly seriously... but if you missed it (or just miss it now!), this is a chance to see it in action. Thanks, nillapuddin.

Jaw-dropping concept art for Venerance
TDSpiral stopped in with some concept art he created for the Venerance project (a Crysis 2 total mod). It shows Côte d'Azur... on fire. It's amazing! If you sign up for the Venerance forums (free, of course), you can see a couple of other versions (day and night, not on fire) - all came from a sketch originally done by Leviathan, but made into something beautiful by TDSpiral. (Links are in his forum post.) It's amazing what this group can do! (Louis Wu 20:23:43 UTC) (permalink)

Dumb title, worthwhile concept
Normally, I don't like posting links to articles with titles like "Top 5 Reasons Why HALO 4 Could Be Awesome Or Could Disappoint" - they're usually written for pageviews alone, and are a waste of your time and mine. But I sort of enjoyed this one - it looked at five aspects of the Halo series that either have a lot to live up to, or a lot to answer for. Can 343 pick the right road? Link Dumps Hurt My Head
Okay, buckle in, this is gonna be a monster. I'm gonna try to summarize all the new Halo 4/PAX links we've got at this point... and there are a LOT. Before I get into individual links/posts, let's start with a summary Homeboyd put up on NeoGAF last night - it has links to a couple of dozen sources of information, nicely broken down by category. I'd recommend reading this first. THEN go through the list below.
- AvatarAwards has a listing of the Halo 4 avatar awards you can unlock in-game. (MixMaker1 actually put together a video with this information, if you're better at hearing/seeing than reading.)
- IGN pulled out the Exile gameplay from the Halo 4 panel video, so if you're in a hurry and don't want to watch the whole panel, they've got you covered.
- Looks like Prima Games is not only working with 343 to put together the Halo 4 Strategy Guide... they're also working with MLG. Interesting twist! (Thanks, CyReN.)
- Part 1 of Ghaleon's PAX Halo 4 impressions (which covered core gameplay) was in Homeboyd's link... but Part 2 (covering new features) isn't. Part 3 is still coming.
- There's a YouTube link for the 343 BTS 'A Hero Awakes' in that original link... but nillapuddin pointed out that the nearly 700mb hi-res file is now available on Xbox.com's press site.
- Der Flatulator went through a boatload of off-screen vids, and itemized all of the Armor Abilities, Tactical Packages, and Support Upgrades that were visible in this build of the game.
- Duji added a Light Rifle-heavy gameplay vid to the corpus.
- Plywood was kind enough to upload the full 1GB file I used to make the YouTube link posted last night to Mediafire - if you can handle RAR files, download all 6 parts and you'll have a version of the Exile CTF game that has none of YouTube's compression artifacts. I wish I had the bandwidth to supply a single-segment version of this... but I don't. Plywood... you rock.
- Dust Storm has been pretty busy - he uploaded a couple of new vids to PodtacTV. The Halo 4 Reborn panel from Saturday night was in Homeboyd's post - but a short interview with Kevin Grace and Kynan Pearson, about the changes to CTF, was not.
- Halo Base uploaded a montage video containing all campaign clips uploaded to date - interesting combination!
- samurai let us know that Halo Orbit has put together a picture showing all the Halo 4 helmets shown to date - useful!
- Firestream sent us a pair of wallpaper links (First | Second) - gorgeous!
There are other newsbits in the queue, and it's really possible I'll actually get to them today... but for now, that should help. (Louis Wu 18:00:27 UTC) (permalink)
Exile CTF Direct Feed - finally in HD
Took much longer than I'd hoped (no way to take care of the upload while I was at PAX this afternoon), but the Exile CTF game we posted earlier today is now (again) up on YouTube, in HD format. (Well, YouTube's HD format. I cringed watching what they did to the original source.) Hope this is useful! (Louis Wu 03:20:21 UTC) (permalink)
News September 2 2012
If you read the last newspost, you probably saw that there's a 35-second video showing direct-feed footage of gameplay on Exile available from Xbox Press. You probably also know that there are a plethora of off-screen videos (in various qualities, ranging from bad to watchable) recorded at the show. What you DON'T have yet is a solid chunk of actual gameplay, recorded via direct feed (so that sounds are included, colors are right, text is readable)... until now. Thanks to the herculean efforts of 343 (I need to call out Alison Stroll, Jay Frechette, Kynan Pearson, and David Ellis in particular, though there were others involved), we've got 15 minutes of an actual CTF match between 5 343 developers (well, four plus Bravo) and 5 HaloGAF representatives, recorded at an after-hours party on Friday night. Technical difficulties precluded us showing you the first match of the contest, which is unfortunate, because David Ellis (whose POV was recorded) was ON FIRE that game. He did a little less well in this one (to be honest, HaloGAF rolled over the devs like a Hummer over baby rabbits), but the important thing is, it's high-quality footage showing off nearly a full game on a brand-new map! What I WANTED to do was release a 720p version of this footage for download - but unfortunately, we don't have the bandwidth to handle a file of this size, and I wasn't able to set up a BitTorrent seed (which would allow us to share the load). So for now, we're making this video available on YouTube - and we will look into other options once I'm back home. Go watch, and enjoy! (And for those who care: HaloGAF took the best-of-three competition in a two-game sweep.) Update: apparently, the YouTube version has screwed-up sound... I need to figure out why. (The original file is fine.) Link is down until I can work this out. Sorry. :( Update 2: This is why I don't use YouTube. :( Looks like it's going to be a couple of hours before a new high-quality version can be posted, so in the meantime, I'm posting a smaller, locally-hosted version. It's not perfect - but it's watchable. (I hope the server doesn't melt.) As soon as the HD version is uploaded (and WORKING) on YouTube, I'll link to that again. This is why we need a home team when we're at conventions... (Louis Wu 18:10:01 UTC) (permalink)
An incomplete PAX roundup
Wow. It's Sunday, I've slept a total of 8 hours in the past 72, and we're so far behind on news I'm not sure we can catch up - especially since there's been so much juicy stuff here at PAX. There is definitely non-Halo 4 news in the queue - but given our limited resources (mostly time, I guess), I'm going to have to hold off on that stuff for now.
