Girl Battle
Leviathan came across a DeviantART piece entitled 'Girl Battle' - it's an attempt by artrobot9000 to 'make badass armored/covered girls look feminine without being sexual'. I'd say it was a success! Spartan Assault News (Again)
There was some confusion a couple of weeks ago about the release date of Spartan Assault for the Xbox 360 - we'd pointed out that a fan had noticed a page on the Xbox.com site listing a release date of January 31, but the following day that page disappeared. Well, according to Halo Waypoint's front page right now, It IS coming out tomorrow! Good news. ($15 gets you everything that's been released so far - the game, the new co-op mode, and the first expansion pack. You may have seen some reports of leaked pictures from the next Halo recently; the 'leak' has been debunked across the board (by 343 and by the creators of the images, who are actually building a CryEngine 3-based mod we mentioned back in July). Making TV more entertaining
Elan Lee has some experience with setting up out-of-the-ordinary experiences with stuff like videogames; he was part of the team that created I Love Bees, for Halo 2, and he was part of the team that created Sadie's Story, for Halo 3: ODST (at a completely different company). Now he's the Creative Director at Microsoft Entertainment Studios (they'll be the people bringing you the Spielberg-produced Halo series) - go read an interview at VentureBeat to get a sense where he thinks interactive TV is going! With the announcement of Microsoft's acquisition of the Gears of War franchise from Epic, Polygon thought it fit to provide an opinion on how they feel that Halo 4 laid the blueprint for the next generation of Gears of War. Finding Unused Skulls in ODST
Looks like there were a couple of extra skulls in Halo 3: ODST that were cut before the final game was released; YouTuber TehBanStick posted a film showing off gameplay with the 'Third Person' skull activated. (As you might guess, it moves you into a 3rd person position off the right shoulder of the player model.) The second unused skull (the Director's Skull) was actually discussed by dev team members at PAX '09 - it would have provided hours of commentary that could run over gameplay. Machinima Roundup
In the last couple of days, we've gotten a number of emails pointing out Halo machinima projects - both new and updated. Here's a roundup:
- ZoxinTV turned us on to Rookshot, a new Halo machinima series from Red Rook. There are two episodes live at this point (Ep 1 | Ep 2) - the second one even has a musical in it! Pretty entertaining.
- The Halo Mole team has released their eighth contestant introduction - this one looks at Master Sundown a strong (and sneaky) player. Go see what he brings to the table!
- Death McGunz sent word that Suicide Episode 9 is now live - Jerrod can't seem to figure out his priorities.

Waitin' on the Blunder
Over the past weekend, a number of HBO regulars got together for the second annual HBO Mountain Bash, a ski-and-fun weekend organized by Schooly D in Heber, UT. Tex wrote up a pretty exhaustive recap of the event, chock-full of pics, and others in the thread added their own reminiscences. There's nothing really like a real-world get-together of like-minded people... only a little Halo was played, but if it hadn't been for Halo, these people wouldn't even know each other. Go read! Catching up while we're behind
Apologies for the lack of Halo news yesterday; blame a broken washing machine and a slightly obsessive family member for my inability to find updating time. Halo Waypoint had no such trouble; their weekly Halo Bulletin was posted as expected, on time. DrBizz Breaks In
Whoa. High Impact Halo went into cryosleep back in April 2011 - it had one update in June of that year, when a long-standing trick challenge finally fell, but otherwise has been read-only for almost 3 years. Until today. There's a new post, courtesy of Ducain, because a ridiculously difficult trick, worked on by the community for almost 10 years, has finally been completely successfully. Hmm. Scified noticed a short-lived (deleted now) Twitter conversation in which Production Weekly mentioned a Halo project written by Paul Scheuring and produced by Ridley Scott. The GH057 of 343
Eric Hewitt, better known to the Halo community as Gh057ayame, has taken a position with 343 industries (Team Beyond has the story, based on a tweet of his plane ticket out, and his Twitter bio). He joins a number of other Halo pros there - first Bravo, then Dersky, and Neighbor, were all hired by the company. Statengate
A few months back Joseph Staten, writer and designer director on Destiny, surprised us with his unexpected departure from Bungie in order "to tackle new creative challenges." Today, Xbox Studio Manager Mike Ybarra tweeted that Staten is now back at Microsoft serving as Senior Creative Director. Many speculated that this was his return to the Halo franchise, but Polygon reports that Staten isn't directly involved with the next Halo game. Instead, "he will help create the world's best entertainment on Xbox, as well as help shape our franchise strategy for some Microsoft Studios titles." It will be interesting to see where this leads! Inspired by Reach's Invasion gametype, Gabotron ES spent months modding and messing around with Megalo to create a gametype that would scratch that Invasion itch. AGDQ 2014 Halo 2 Speedrun
NOKYARD found an archived version of Monopoli's Halo 2 speed run from Awesome Games Done Quick 2014 - if you weren't able to watch it in the wee hours of the morning now is your chance. Why I Game
This isn't really Halo-related, but it's video-game related, and the submitter shows up around here quite a bit. Gina 'Dogiojoe' Johnson has just kicked off a Kickstarter campaign for a book she's written called 'Why I Game' - it's a response to the 'video games are responsible for violence' reaction after many gun-related tragedies in this country. An article focusing on the aborted Halo film helmed by Neil Blomkamp was written last April at One Room with a View... but it popped up in my Google feed last night. Weird. Xbox Ondering
This morning a blog post by Xbox Corporate Vice President of Marketing, Strategy and Business, Yusuf Mehdi thanked fans for "an epic 2013" and touted some of the cool happenings and titles on their way in 2014. Missing conspicuously from the list was Halo, which inevitably led to some fraught musings regarding the next installment making it in time to meet its 2014 goal on the Xbox One. As Game Informer points out though, there is no current reason for concern, highlighting some post-blog tweets o' clarification from Rob Semsey, PR manager for the Halo and Forza franchises. Spartan Assault - Killing you with Tiny Cuts
Arithmomaniac pointed out a review of Spartan Assault from Ars Technica - their biggest complaint is the microtransaction situation. (The weapons/abilities you need at higher levels require either experience or real cash, and experience is hard to come by sometimes.) World's Most Dedicated Halo Dad
Justin Barr posted his nearly 60 year old (Wu still not dethroned) farther Guy's entire Halo service record, which adds up to 17,000 online games played across various Halo titles. After garnering quite of bit of attention, Bravo from 343 reached out to Justin to thank his Dad for his dedication, and to surprise Guy with a one-of-a-kind gift. As a fan of Ragnarok, Guy received a poster that includes concept art and screenshots of early map builds straight from map creator Vic Deleon himself, all presented in a frame signed by the team. As pointed out by Bravo, one of the sceenshots shows off an early build of Ragnarok that still has the Halo 3 bases - neat!
