Fishes are good for eating.
Work on Last Stand continues - Phoenix_9286 announced Page Seven on our forum yesterday. This is turning into an F-Troop sort of thing... (Louis Wu 14:42:14 UTC)

7he Bridge
Team Scoog, previously known for a fantastic Halo movie, Out for Blood, has created '7he Bridge' - a 2v2 Spartan vs Covenant battle to control a bridge. It's a bit dark at the beginning - but quality improves later on, and the camera work is just great. The announcement (with a comcast link to the original WMP9 film) can be found here; we've mirrored both that version (17.9 mb, mythica.org | bungie.org) and a new QuickTime version (16.5 mb, bungie.org | mythica.org)... grab the one that works best for you. Bafta dominated by HL2
The Bafta Interactive Entertainment Awards were held yesterday and today in London - and Halo 2 went home with the Best Xbox Game award. In every other category for which it had been nominated, however (Action/Adventure, Online & Multiplayer, and Animation), it was beaten out by Half-Life 2. Ouch! Thanks to ICDedPpl, who saw it at Mirror.co.uk. (Louis Wu 21:51:10 UTC)

BOTD2: Biohazard
Not long ago, ipushmycar announced the release of BOTD2: Biohazard, a followup video to Beach of the Dead. (The trailer was released in mid-January, to rave reviews and heavy anticipation.) Beach of the Dead 2 does a fantastic job of telling a classic zombie tale with no dialogue at all (beyond the narrator's voiceover at the start). This is really well-made machinima; great camerawork, great 'acting' - it hooks you early and holds you right through the end. The initial release was WMP9-only, and came in two flavors; a high-res 640x288 version that weighed in at a whopping 84.7 mb, and a low-res 320x144 version that was still a hefty 40.3 mb. In addition, both of these suffered from pretty heavy interlacing issues. ipushmycar went to the extra effort of reencoding to fix the interlace problem, and sent us a version we could turn into nice QuickTime releases; again, there's a high-res (640x288, 45.5 mb) version (mythica.org | bungie.org) and a lowres (320x144, 24.3 mb) version (mythica.org | bungie.org). If you still need the original WMP9 versions, the links for both flavors are in ipushmycar's forum thread. Watch this one! Update: (30 July 2006) A recent forum thread reminded me that TrickingIt.com no longer exists - which means the WMP9 versions of this film are no longer linked anywhere. Here are some local copies (hires, 640x290, 42.4 mb | lowres, 320x144, 26.4 mb). (Louis Wu 16:41:07 UTC)

Wow, cool. OxYgEn, over at the Gearbox forums, has announced a new Halo CE map based on (of all things) a piece of Tina Leyk artwork. Check out the starting phases of Installation 07. Thanks, MasterGrief. (Louis Wu 11:16:39 UTC)

Halo 2 as a serious player
HALOChat has also posted an interview with a high-ranking Halo 2 player - it's described as part 1 of 3 of 'Speaking with a Pro'... but from reading the interview, it looks like cAPPy204 is just someone who plays a lot. (I can't see anything that suggests that he does this for money anywhere.) Comments can go in the forum thread HALOChat started to announce this. (Louis Wu 16:39:56 UTC)

Depressing administrivia
I HATE making posts like this one - but I think it's become necessary. Recently, we've received a mountain of video announcements and submissions; some bits are quite good, and we're happy to host them, or point them out if others are hosting them. Others are not great, but okay... and as long as they come with their own bandwidth (that is, nobody's asking us to help with the hosting), I don't mind putting up a news post. Unfortunately, many of them (more every day) are, simply put, crap - and lots of these come with their own hosting. If I want to pass on an announcement, I have no choice but to tell the maker that we're not posting because the movie is crap - and that's just mean. Please - save me the trouble, by LOOKING SERIOUSLY AT THE PIECES YOU SUBMIT. If nobody outside your immediate family would leave the thing running for more than the first 30 seconds... scrap it and try another tack. I don't want to discourage budding movie makers; there are certainly MANY examples over the years here at HBO where someone who was given just a little bit of encouragement when they were raw and inexperienced blossomed into a spectacular moviemaker. I do want to make you think about why you're doing this, though; if it's just for the exposure, take the time and make a GOOD film instead of shooting us everything you've ever recorded. I know I've said it before - but clearly, it was far enough in the past that many folks never saw it: if a movie doesn't show at least SOME level of entertainment value or originality, even if it comes with its own bandwidth, I'm going to pass on mentioning it. You're welcome to circumvent me and post it in our forum, if this happens to you; if the announcement is met with enthusiasm and excitement, I'll realize I made a mistake and take another look. Outpost: Coagulation
Outpost: Coagulation was announced last night - there's a trailer and Episode 1. (The trailer was sent in a few days ago - I apologize, it got lost in the shuffle.) Heavily inspired by Red vs Blue, it's the story of a team of Spartans on Coagulation, living and working under the threat of Covenant encroachment. Audio can be a little hard to hear at times. HALOChat has provided a mirror for episode 1, in case bandwidth runs out. Both vids are WMP9 format - the trailer is 14 mb, ep 1 is 22.5. (Louis Wu 13:19:38 UTC)

TonyDanzaphobia
There's a new Public Service Announcement posted over at Red vs Blue - it's called 'Cold and Flu Season', and it uses the RvB team to pin down what causes the illnesses we come down with around this time of year, and some of the best ways of combating them. Well, okay, not the BEST ways... Hi-res for sponsors, standard res for the rest of the world. Thanks to altodarknight for the heads-up. Update: Bah. Sorry - it's NOT yet available for the rest of the world yet. Soon. (Next time, I log out before posting. My bad.) (Louis Wu 11:18:16 UTC)

Halo 2 nominated for IGDA Audio Award
The 5th Annual Game Developers Choice Awards nominees were announced yesterday - and Halo 2 was nominated in the Audio category. Good luck, guys! Winners will be announced March 9 at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco. They won this award in 2002, for Halo... let's see if they can do it again! (Thanks, Rampancy.net.) Swahili Update
Okay, folks have been looking at the translated Swahili quotes we posted this morning, and overall, it looks like rehema did a great job... but he made one small mistake. Everyone has accepted the Swahili proverbs which make up the bulk of the quotes - nobody's really sure if they actually refer to anything in-game or not, but they're having fun debating it - but one quote stands out, because it's clearly NOT a proverb. It refers to Old Man Water (Mzee Maji)... or does it? What if the announcer had trouble with some common English consonant combinations, and that 'ji' was really an 'rty'? I'd love to be able to take credit for noticing this... but a little Bungie bird did some whispering. (Louis Wu 22:14:44 UTC)

Swahili announcements - translated
Yesterday, we pointed out that Frankie had hinted that some of the Swahili announcements, audible on the Outskirts level, might contain material of interest to fans. Last night, rehema popped onto our forum, and with some file help from m32, was able to listen to the clips - and translate them. We've added all 7 unique clips that ZexGX found a few weeks ago, plus one new one posted by Armum Infirni last night, to our Dialogue Databank, along with the original Swahili transcriptions and rehema's translations. Go take a look! Update: It looks like replay went the next step, and googled the translations... many are Swahili proverbs. It's the Old Man Maji quote that intrigues me... it's not a proverb, and there's no clear tie to a Halo 2 plot point; what's this about? (Louis Wu 14:24:29 UTC)

An Abandoned Plea, Revisited
Whoa. A month ago ZexGX posted a bunch of sounds collected on Outskirts; public service announcements, playing on loudspeakers in Swahili. He was asking for translation help. (He wasn't the first to find these - but as far as I know, this was the first time they were made available as recordings.) Nobody was able to help, and the thread died. Today, Frankie dropped into that thread with a suggestion that translating might be worth our while... so does anyone know any Swahili? (Louis Wu 19:15:44 UTC)

Happy Birthday, Mister Chief!
Thanks to Cody Brigan, who notified us that the Mister Chief contest being run by misterchief.com is now over - with the winners announced! Some pretty cool stuff came out of this one. (Mr. Brigan, not totally coincidentally, was the grand-prize winner, with a funny Flash tidbit.) Go watch. (Warning: Stuntmutt's entry might be considered unsafe for work. Or at least scary.) You Slay Me - and more
Yesterday (well, 2 days ago by this system clock, but trust me, it was yesterday), (GT)Juggler posted a note on our forum about a new movie he'd made. GT 14 - You Slay Me is 4 minutes long, and 26-31 mb large, depending on the version you get. It's a departure from his last few vids - no modding, just gameplay and nice effects. The initial rush should be over; it was announced on High Impact Halo yesterday... but for folks who haven't grabbed it yet, there are a few options: Halo GT has a bunch of links to the original MPEG-4-encoded version; that one weighs in at 31.3 mb, and is best viewed with a current version of QuickTime. We've re-encoded it as a more-compatible QuickTime, as well as in WMP9 format (both about 26 mb) - if the MPEG-4 doesn't work for you, go ahead and grab one of these. While you're checking out gameplay vids, our forum was hit with a few other links today: WaLKa posted his Halo 2 Montage, and quertykd posted TheSkills. Must have been the weekend for polishing the movies! Update: trigger119 just pointed out 'Bullets', a new vid from his clan, Vypers. 22 mb, WMP9 format. (Louis Wu 05:02:06 UTC)

Pete Parsons - Game Designer of the Year?
Wired Magazine has announced their nominees for the Sixth Annual Wired Rave Awards - Pete Parsons has picked up a nomination for 'Game Designer' for his work on Halo 2 (hehe). Gamespy's GotY Awards Posted
Not willing to be left behind (SpikeTV, IGN, and Gamespot all announced stuff earlier this week), Gamespy has put up THIER 2004 Game of the Year sections. Halo 2 won several awards: Xbox Game of the Year, Xbox Shooter of the Year, Best Use of Xbox Live, and Best and Worst Ending in an Xbox game. It's also up for Overall Game of the Year (which will be announced next week). Thanks, Black Six. (Louis Wu 13:41:51 UTC)

Awards for all
Wow, I guess it's Awards time. As many people might remember, last night was the broadcast of SpikeTV's Video Game Awards 2004 - Halo 2 was up for a bunch of stuff, but GTA: San Andreas took most of it home. Jason Jones won Designer of the Year for the game, and Halo 2 won Best First Person Action. (An easier place to view the entire list of winners is Australia's The Age - thanks, Brett C.) Interestingly, Ron Perlman accepted the Shooter award on behalf of Bungie - thanks, Spike. The Gaming Big Boys did awards stuff too, last night:

  • IGN's Best of 2004: Halo 2 takes home Best First-Person Shooter, Best Xbox Live Game, Best Soundtrack, Best Use of Sound, Most Innovative Design (for Bungie.net's XBL stats), and Xbox Game of the Year, with a Runner-Up prize in Best Graphics. (There's also some wallpaper to download.) Thanks, Jonathan Rivas.
  • Gamespot has announced their Best and Worst of 2004 (the actual countdown starts on Friday), and Halo 2 is nominated for Best Original Music, Best Sound Effects, Best Multiplayer Game, Best Original Game Mechanic, Biggest Disappointment, Best Shooter, and Best Xbox Game. Thanks, KP.

And if all that awards stuff isn't enough for you, Voodoo Extreme is holding another Halo 2 vs Half-Life 2 poll - I guess Gamespy's ridiculous months-long one recently wasn't enough. (Half-Life 2 is currently kicking booty.) (Louis Wu 14:17:09 UTC)

HaloCE Video Contest - More Prizes
A week ago, we mentioned a contest cosponsored by Gearbox Software, EPG Servers, and Halo Maps; create a video promoting Halo CE, win cool stuff. The list of stuff just grew; Forerunners.org tossed in a couple of signed German copies of Halo PC. You can find the announcement of new prizes on the Gearbox forum, and the full contest rules (including prizes) on the Halo Maps website. (Louis Wu 14:35:01 UTC)

Patience is a virtue.
Almost 2 years ago, Racing Champions Ertl (the parent company of Joyride Studios) announced that they'd be creating Halo action figures - and the first thought from Stuntmutt was 'we need Halo-based Twisted Toyfare Theatre!' (There's a link in that post if you've never heard of this.) Sometimes these things take a little while. Toyfare released their first-ever Halo photo price guide recently... and included in it 3 'Big Shots' - exactly what Stunt was asking for. One... two... three. Wheee! (Louis Wu 16:49:57 UTC)
