Smokin'Aces
We got a note from Micah Brooke, at machinima.com, about a new contest they're running; submit your best kills from your favorite video games, win cold, hard cash. You've got a couple of weeks - and Halo is only one of a myriad of options... top prize is $1000. Check out all the details on their contest page. (Louis Wu 02:44:14 UTC)

This Spartan Life, Ep 4 (most modules)
This Spartan Life, a machinima talk show, has released previous episodes as 'modules' - a half-hour show might be broken up into 5 or 6 pieces, and released over the course of a few weeks. Episode 4 is a little different - 3 of the 5 modules are online right now, with a fourth due to show up later today. This episode will contain interviews with McKenzie Wark (author of A Hacker Manifesto, among other works) and Burnie Burns (of Rooster Teeth Productions), as well as humor and music snippets. The opening monologue, the travelogue we mentioned in early November, and the interview with Burnie are all up now, with the McKenzie Wark interview coming soon. Go watch - good stuff! Prophecy Episode 1 Graphic Novel
Interesting. Lordstemplar1 stopped by to point out a PDF-ed Prophecy Episode 1 Graphic Novel - it's Halo machinima, filtered and comic-booked. Pretty fun! (Louis Wu 22:36:51 UTC)

Jungle Trigonometry: Food
The big news today is going to be the Brutes documentary released on Xbox Live Marketplace earlier this morning, and we'll certainly get to that - but there's a bunch of other Halo goodness that yearns to be free, as well. First up - trigger119 is hosting, over at GamingTV.org, a new vid from SodaGod, called 'Jungle Trigonometry: Food'. It's bright, it's funny, it's well filmed. Have I said SodaGod is one of my favorite machinimators? He is. Grab this - it's worth the download. (We've got mirrors, but as of now they don't seem to be needed.) (Louis Wu 14:59:53 UTC)

3 new This Spartan Life eps at SpikeTV
First off - I noticed a frew folks saw the headline of last night's Weekly Update post ('Pistol De-Nerfed') and wondered if I were being sarcastic, or if there really was going to be something done with the pistol to return it to Halo 1 status - for the record, it was a joke. Sorry. Okay, on to Halo news. The rest of the episodes that This Spartan Life did for Spike TV are now online - we mentioned the Frag Dolls piece back in November, and the Augustana piece earlier this week - if you swing by now, you'll find three new episodes. Damian talked to Tristan Pope and Terran Gregory, of Blizzard, about World of Warcraft (and Machinima), as well as Geoff Keighley, of Spike TV's Game Head, and Julian Gerighty, producer of Splinter Cell. Again, there's no way to get to the videos directly via Spike's Flash interface, so follow the URL to the VGA 2006 page, and then click on the 'This Spartan Life' link in the left navbar to get an interface to all 5 'webisodes'. Thanks to Nicholas Brown for the heads-up. (Louis Wu 13:45:13 UTC)

Space Dementia, and Movies in General
Okay, first off - we've got a new movie for you. It's from Jamie98s, and it's called Space Dementia, and it's really quite good. Jack Walters thinks he's ready for active duty again - but all may not be as it seems. Great effects, astoundingly high compression (so that a 15 minute 640x480 movie weighs in at only 70 mb, and STILL looks pretty good), great story. Download it in WMP9 format (70.6 mb) or QuickTime format (71.5 mb) - I have to say, I'm pretty happy with the overall quality of new machinima these days. Which brings me to my second point - the MPRRS is NOT dead, it's still under reconstruction. Cybrfrk got called up for jury duty, so he's got less time for coding than we'd originally thought - but we'll get there, and the final product will be better (and more useful) than the original was. Thanks to all who've offered to help (we don't need coding help, but we WILL need reviewing help, once we reopen), and if you've written to us, worried that it's gone - don't worry, it really is coming back. Meanwhile, go watch Space Dementia. It's really well-done. (Louis Wu 00:51:29 UTC)

Pestilence
Not long ago, we released Pie Chapters 1 and 2, from Machine Enema - both were fantastic examples of Halo machinima. Recently sodaGoD completed Pestilence, set in the same universe as the Pie stories, but on a different tack. As before, cinematography is excellent, storyline is strong, voice acting is top-notch. I loved this film. We've got it available in both WMP9 (125 mb) and QuickTime (129 mb) formats - grab a copy and follow Jurnigan's swath of destruction! Over at GamingTV.org, you can also grab a much higher-bitrate version (320 mb, WMP9 format), and small QT version (mp4, 320x240, 52mb) - thanks, trigger119. (Louis Wu 21:48:57 UTC)

Tra5h Ta1k's Machinima Festival Opening
Very nice - over at the website for the Ill Clan's Trash Talk, there's a new episode that was made specifically for the Machinima Film Festival last weekend - it has Trash Talk's Ill Will interacting with characters from various nominees at the convention, including Church and Tucker from Red vs Blue, and Damien Lacedamian from This Spartan Life. Fun! Thanks, The First Spartan. (Louis Wu 19:45:26 UTC)

GamingTV Kicks Off
A few days ago, GamingTV.org came online - it's a new site devoted to hosting machinima, and though it's not Halo-exclusive, it certainly focuses on Halo. It's being run by trigger119, who's been around the Halo machinima community for a few years now - if you haven't checked it out yet, you should! (Louis Wu 16:03:59 UTC)

The MPRRS - Offline, for now
I didn't think folks would notice so quickly, but I'm getting mail, so I might as well make this public. Several events this weekend have made it clear to me that the Movie Peer Review Rating System is no longer functional; a significant number of reviewers are members of machinima clans, and (contrary to the rules they agreed to when they signed up) do not always skip videos made by clan members. Similarly, machinima makers who have friends that happen to be reviewers are getting inflated scores from these friends whenever movies are submitted. Because of this, a number of movies which probably would not have been released had the system truly been impartial have made it through to the public. This weakens the entire foundation on which this system is built; if you can't trust that the films coming out are the cream of the crop, what's the point of the MPRRS in the first place? To be totally honest, I simply do not have a solution for this problem at the moment. I have no way of knowing who knows who behind the scenes - we worked on trust, and that's been broken now. Because of this, I've shut the system down. If we can come up with a reasonable way of ensuring this problem doesn't continue, we'll reopen the doors. In the meantime - I apologize, you'll need to find other hosting for your videos. (Louis Wu 03:10:41 UTC)

It's time for the Mackies
A quick reminder - the Mackies, the annual Machinima Awards, take place this weekend, and the Machinima Festival that goes with them starts tomorrow; you can read articles at both Newsday.com and Wired.com. Halo projects feature prominently in both articles. (Louis Wu 17:53:27 UTC)

Terminal Dogs - Redux
A couple of weeks ago, we mentioned the machinima project 'Terminal Dogs' - it was being hosted on machinima.com and YouTube. I guess Krad Productions wanted to widen the viewership, because they submitted the film to the MPRRS - and the reviewers liked it. We're hosting a WMP9 version (24.7 mb) and a QuickTime version (23.3 mb). Once again - this is a couple of scenes from the fantastic movie 'Reservoir Dogs', recreated in Halo. RvB Exclusive on Xbox World 360
Mike 'Feenix' Oldman writes to let us know that Issue 45 of the UK's Xbox World 360 Magazine will contain "an exclusive, one-off episode of the hilarious Halo machinima series, Red Vs. Blue" on its cover DVD. (This issue goes on sale October 18.) You won't find this episode on the RvB website - it was made for the Edinburgh Interactive Entertainment Festival in August, and "shows what happens when Grif, Church and Co. plan their trip to Scotland to attend the festival". Look for a copy at your favorite newsstand! (Louis Wu 14:10:36 UTC)

The Mackies - 2006 Nominations
The Mackies (annual machinima awards) nominations have been posted - and a few Halo projects are up for stuff. CROSSFIRE's 'Desolate' has been nominated for Best Picture, Best Cinematography, Best Sound Design, and Best Independent Machinima, Red vs Blue are up for Best Voice-Acting Performance, Best Writing, and Best Series, and This Spartan Life is up for Best Series. Good luck to all of 'em! (Louis Wu 19:40:39 UTC)

Corrupt, Remastered
xbryboyremix remastered his highly-regarded video 'Corrupt' - enhanced video, remastered digital audio, realistic visual effects... the MPRRS liked the changes, so we're swapping the old links for new ones. It's roughly the same size as it used to be - 78 mb for the WMP9 version, 83.5 mb for the QuickTime version; you can grab it again to see the changes, or grab it for the first time, if you missed it the last time around. Really well-done machinima. (Louis Wu 13:34:58 UTC)

Terminal Dogs, Part I
Evan Ryan, of Krad Productions, let us know that Terminal Dogs, Part: 1 is now up at both Machinima.com (hi-res) and YouTube (low-res); as you might guess from the title, it's a Halo take on Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs (RD's dialogue, Krad's video). I love that film... time to go rent it again, I think. In the meantime, check this out - nice filming job! (Louis Wu 13:47:57 UTC)

He's hit bottom, and just started digging
Foo Mo Jive points out new content at Podtacular.com. Episode 82 has been posted, with guest host Stuntmutt, who is so self-effacing that the Podtacular boys have started a 'save Stuntmutt' fund. (It also covers stuff like the Bungie Podcast, Halo news, a glitch roundup, and more. This was all recorded on Sunday, which means the X06 revelations from yesterday aren't mentioned.) And Halo News 6 is up, the latest episode of a new parody machinima news show, in both YouTube (Flash) and iPod (mp4) versions. Get to downloading! (Louis Wu 13:39:52 UTC)

Machinima: Over The Years
TheMaker420 put together a tribute film entitled 'Machinima: Over The Years', looking at some of the better vids out there. The MPRRS reviewers liked it, for the most part... so we're hosting it. It's 50 mb, and comes in WMP9 or QuickTime formats. Grab one! (Louis Wu 01:52:52 UTC)

New Machinima on the way from Treeskunk
Break Point Halo has interviewed Dan Preuss, the co-creator of Treeskunk Productions (a machinima group that created Outpost: Coagulation' and 'Outpost: Backwash', among other projects. Nice to hear they're gearing up again! Thanks, haphazardly. (Louis Wu 18:45:00 UTC)

Pie: Chapter 1
Mike Rouse, of Machine-Enema, submitted 'Pie, Chapter 1' to the MPRRS yesterday. It passed, handily; it's different from a lot of machinima out there. It has a powerful storyline, and a clever use of mods. The video has a distinctive (and intentional) look to it; it adds nicely to the atmosphere of the film. It's rather large - almost 11 minutes, weighing in at a bit over 120 mb in either WMP9 or QuickTime formats - but absolutely worth the download. Grab a copy. (Louis Wu 14:30:14 UTC)

Private 724
Evan Ryan, of Krad Productions, sent us a link to a movie he'd made - It's called 'Private 724', and you can find it at FileFront. (There's a version at Machinima.com, as well - but it's just a draft render; the FileFront version is the final. If the Machinima page says "36 mb", it hasn't been swapped yet.) An uneasy truce explodes from a single misunderstanding... there is no dialogue in this video, but it doesn't suffer a bit from the absence. Powerful cinematography... give it a look! 43 mb, in WMP9 format. (Louis Wu 02:14:27 UTC)

Halo Unyielding
Laird, of Sponsors vs Freeloaders, has spent a significant amount of time recently putting together Halo Unyielding, Part 1 - it does what very little other Halo machinima has done to date; it focuses on a space battle. Using HaloCE, and some great external effects, this one is full of exploding ships and starfield-filled carnage. Very cool stuff! Swing by the Halo: Unyielding website to pick up a copy in WMP9 format (53.8 mb) or QuickTime format (48.3 mb). To make life a bit easier for them, we're mirroring both files (WMP9 | QT) - grab them from whereever's faster for you. Thanks to Yaksha for the heads-up. (Louis Wu 15:35:24 UTC)

Podtacular Ep 80
Foo Mo Jive points out that Podtacular Episode 80 is out (yeah, we were late on 79, but hey, it's nice to catch up) - it's a tip show, focusing on Lockout, and there's an interview with the creators of the Codex machinima series. A bit over an hour, 57 mb. Get to downloading! (Louis Wu 13:59:32 UTC)
