Halo Themed iGoogle Skin
NovusVir let us know that he's created a Halo-themed iGoogle skin; if you want your customized iGoogle page to reflect your favorite video game, check it out! (He says the gadget is safe; I have no way of confirming that, so use at your own risk. Google says that malicious gadgets can steal cookies and such.) (Louis Wu 12:15:58 UTC)

Balancing Views
There's a small interview with Frank O'Connor over at CVG - discussion of what was learned from the beta, and what might be changed by the time we see the final product. Nothing horribly new, but if you're looking for confirmation that Snowbound was indeed a well-liked map or wondering what Bungie thought of the stuff like the Custom Game leaks, give it a read. More info (and pics) about Master Replicas guns
A week ago, we mentioned the new stuff coming from Master Replicas - a pair of weapon replicas - but at the time, the only info about these could be found on store sites. Last night, ODSTAdrianFii noticed that some info - and a pair of photos - are now up on the Master Replicas site itself... and man, do those look good. I'm still waiting to find out how big they are - but I must say, they're gorgeous. (Louis Wu 11:33:50 UTC)

Custom-painted Elite
Interesting. So back in May, Xbox Australia and Bungie auctioned off an airbbrushed 360, signed by Bungie, to raise money for Make-A-Wish. They pulled in almost AU$25,000. Now, there's a box for sale on eBay in the US that seems to claim to be the same kind of product - except 1) it has no signatures, and 2) it's an Elite, not a 360. (I suppose it never actually says who did the airbrushing - so it's not REALLY claiming to be anything other than a standard painted Elite.) Current bid is $810; auction ends in 10 hours. It DOES look like a nice paint job; if you're in the market for a new Elite, and want one with a custom Halo 3 paintjob on it, and you're willing to pay several hundred bucks for the painting... take a look at this. Thanks to Xbox 360 Fanboy, who found it yesterday. (Louis Wu 13:15:49 UTC)

A pretty cool custom faceplate
bs angel (you may recognize the name - she's a Cavegirl that hangs with the Bungie guys sometimes, she's played some Humpday challenges) recently had a custom Halo faceplate created by Pavel Dolgov. (Search our news for him for other artwork he's done.) She blogged the entire process - Check it out (Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3). Final faceplate is here. Dolgov's faceplate gallery is here. It's not goodybe... okay, yes it is.
And... it's over. Last night, around midnight PDT, the Halo 3 Beta was turned off. If you were in the middle of a game, you were allowed to finish, and for a little while, custom games worked after Matchmaking was turned off - but eventually, EVERYONE was locked out; a very enjoyable 3 weeks has come to an end, and we'll have to wait until September to get back into this. Halo 2 still waits - both on Xboxes and on Vista PCs - but you might find you have a little trouble adjusting to the changes. Oh, how I'll miss my Spiker Grenades! Wayward Spleen™ put together a tiny Flash animation showing off high-res versions of all the ranks (minus the two highest, which he hasn't finished yet) - 'tiny' means under 7k, a tribute to Flash's vector format. And oh, while we're mentioning high-res stuff, High Resolution Halo is working on Medals and Ranks, as well. I guess pretty pictures are gonna have to hold us for the next three months... Serious Business
The Bungie Weekly Update is a marvel to behold; there's a really nice breakdown of what you'll find in each version of Halo 3 (subject to change, of course, but getting pretty darned close to final), you'll find great info about the customization options you'll face when you fire up Halo 3, and you'll see some really nice pictures from Forza 2. (If you customize Forza 2 cars for fun, make sure you check the end of the update carefully; you could win a pretty cool car for your troubles.) There was a fight over firstiness on our forum - looks like Plasmoe beat Frankie. As always, if there's any trouble with B.net for you (or you just want to do some searching), this update is available in our Weekly Update Archive. (Louis Wu 01:47:34 UTC)

Halo 3 Beta Customs
There's a lot of buzz on Halo forums about Custom Games in the Halo 3 Beta. I've written up some thoughts about them (including some of the reasoning why this kind of thing makes, or doesn't make, the news here) in a forum post. You'll also find a link to one of the more complete guides to the existing Custom Games screens. Please - take the caveats to heart. Poke around, enjoy yourself - but always remember that Bungie did not enable these games in the Beta for a reason. Yes, their oversight allowed you access - but do NOT mistake that for planning; there is no implicit agreement that any of the options you can mess with now will be available in the shipping game. Enjoy them as concepts, not promises. (Louis Wu 12:55:19 UTC)

In ur pockets, stealin ur lunch money
Bungie.net has a new Humpday Challenge writeup online - there aren't any custom games in the Beta, so Bungie just went into BTB Training and kicked a whole bunch of patootie. Painful destruction - almost unfair. Fun writeup, though. Thanks, mercury. (Louis Wu 23:15:12 UTC)

Serious H2V Delay
Wow. According to Microsoft's Life Cycle Support page, Halo 2 for Windows Vista won't be available until July 4, 2007. That's a heck of a recall! Thanks, Aj Collins. Update: TheGhost writes to say that that page has been up for at least a month, and so probably has no relation at all to the current recall. He also says that folks at h2vista.net are already well along in their efforts to unlock the editing kit, and new maps are already being created. Good to hear! Update 2: We now have an official response from a Microsoft spokesperson:

"Halo 2" for Windows Vista did not release to retailers on May 22, as previously announced and will now ship from manufacturers on May 31. "Shadowrun" will be the first game to debut the highly anticipated Games for Windows - LIVE system on May 29. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused our customers.

That's much better than July 4! (Louis Wu 21:46:03 UTC)

The things people do for charity
Last week, we mentioned a charity auction in Australia, to raise money for the Make-A-Wish foundation... Spec_Ops_Assault pointed out that the auction is now over, with the custom-painted 360 going for a whopping AU $24,300.00. Now that's some real cash! (Louis Wu 05:15:12 UTC)

Spectacular 360 for Auction
Wow, cool. Xbox Australia and Bungie have gotten together to make some money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation - there's a charity auction for a custom-painted, signed-by-Bungie Xbox 360 on eBay.au right now. Auction runs for another week and a half, bid is already up over AU$2000. (My first reaction was 'whoa, awesome, that's about $3 US, right?' - but I'd forgotten how far the US dollar had fallen; AU$2120 is more than US$1750.) If you've got deep pockets, the cause rocks, and the item itself is a one-of-a-kind... you can't go wrong! Thanks to JeBr0nie for the heads-up (he saw it at PlanetXbox360, among other places). Play and Tray Hands-On
IGN has another Play and Tray review - and since Halo 2 is the first Vista game to USE this feature, they're looking at Halo 2 Vista while they test. I have to say, I've never really understood the lure of this feature; after all, it's only one time you have to worry about the install, right? But IGN makes a point here that I'm not sure I ever considered:

A serious challenge in elevating the PC to platform status, however, is the fact that no matter how nice a gaming computer one has, the process of installing new games is an incredible hassle compared to the convenience of just throwing a new disc in the Xbox 360. Though veterans have become so accustomed to the chore that it takes on ritualistic overtones, console gamers and the broad consumer base are not excited by the prospect of clicking "Next" buttons for half an hour while a new game installs, and in some cases so intimidated as to give up.

'Give up'? Really? Wow. Okay, then - I'm glad it's there, and I'm glad they thought it worked pretty well! (Louis Wu 13:48:55 UTC)

Squeezing the Customers
Over at The Age Blogs (commentary from an Australian newspaper) there's a rant about the two new maps coming next week, and how they're an example of Microsoft's money-grubbing policies. The argument is that since the maps will show up in most matchmaking playlists, and if you don't have them, you won't be allowed INTO those playlists, they constitute an unfair twisting of the purse strings; you MUST pay an additional $4 to continue to play Halo 2 matchmaking. Heh - when the maps were announced, and it was suggested that they might be for the 360 only, I remember complaining that it was unfair that I would be required to pay an additional $400 to buy a 360, just to continue playing Halo 2 Matchmaking. I'm not sure I could line up against an identical argument, even though the money required has dropped by two orders of magnitude (to $4), without sounding like a hypocrite... but the truth is, $4 just doesn't seem like a huge price to pay, to me. Make up your own mind - read the article. (Louis Wu 12:57:44 UTC)
